Never one to shy away from revealing himself and doing so unconventionally, Kirk Franklin returns to the charts with his strong statement of faith in the conceptual Rebirth of Kirk Franklin. From the deeply personal opening, "Intro," to the ending, "Outro (the Blood)," Franklin takes us on a journey of faith littered with doubt, struggles, and a sincerity that's hard to resist. This mostly live release includes a handful of cameo appearances by the likes of Bishop T.D. Jakes, Yolanda Adams, and Jaci Velasquez. Such a diverse group of guests mirrors the accessibility of Franklin's music on this release. Ably backed by a tight band and the powerhouse Vocals of Life choir, Franklin takes no prisoners on the blistering "Hosana," "Caught Up," and the Rasta-flavored "He Reigns," featuring Papa San. Franklin's songwriting prowess also surfaces in quieter numbers like "Don't Cry" and "Always." Throughout his meteoric career, Franklin has skillfully combined soul, gospel, hip-hop, and pop into a multicolored tapestry. On Rebirth, Franklin's colors have never shown brighter. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-09-12

I'm always late to the party, and I just got this CD, but I have always loved "Brighter Day," and bought the album because of that, but have been so pleased with all the other songs on it too. "Hossanah" and "He Reigns" are gorgeous as well. Kirk is the bomb, plain and simple.

5 out of 5 stars Say what you want about Kirk, but this album is anointed........2006-08-09

I have had hot and cold, on and off feelings about Kirk Franklin since his music became popular in the earlier nineties. Kirk Franklin admits that he has had some struggles, but this album doesn't struggle at all. This album is an album of exhortation and praise!

This video is on my top 3 list of dynamic videos. It's moving from the very first song to the last. The video allows you to see what's really going on, the stuff that doesn't air on the cd. Kirk is spectacular! I'd really like to give it 10 stars but you guys won't allow me so I'll just say "Kirk, here's two times (5) stars!

Product Description

On this compelling new 11-track album recorded in the band's hometown, The Rebirth matches its musical vitality with a gift for lucid poetry and songwriting, creating a rich sound built on an organic blend of new and traditional soul, hip-hop, jazz, and funk. These elements make the group's music both highly progressive and a throwback to the classic soul bands like: Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramp, Pleasure, Rotary Connection, Side Effect and Roy Ayers. Over the last few years, The Rebirth has celebrated the successes of several smashing singles: "This Journey In," "Every Body Say Yeah," "Got Your Madness," and their critically acclaimed cover of The Might Ryders' "Evil Vibrations." The release of "This Journey In" quickly garnered airplay on radio stations from Los Angeles to the U.K. and Japan, and appeared on numerous CD's including: King Britt's Black to the Future, Gilles Peterson's Trust the DJ 9 and the Norman Jay MBE compilation entitled Giant 45. In addition, Gilles Peterson included the song on his list of "20 Best in 2003" and Norman Jay called it, "The anthem of the summer 2003." Poignant tracks that appear on This Journey In include "Shake It," a catchy mid-tempo jam that encourages one to feel uninhibited about getting out to the dance floor to simply let loose and enjoy the moment; the smooth dance song, with a funky base line, "Stray Away"; "Common Ends," an uplifting track that talks about the experiences in life that unifies people; and the funky, disco-Brazilianinspired song, "Talking Me Down," plus many other stellar compositions. The most recent release, "Evil Vibrations," was recorded exclusively for Ubiquity Records to appear on its innovative compilation, Rewind! 4. The result was a high-energy, textured sound in the original retro style that included some new lyrics, mixed with De La Soul's version of the classic track. Nominated for "Song of the Year" at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards and concluding in 2004 at #6 on his playlist, "Evil Vibrations," continues to gain accolades for the group as one of the US' most promising neo-soul collectives. "A fabulous CD and a contender for album of the year!!" - Blues & Soul (London) "Evil Vibrations" & "This Journey In" named Gilles Peterson's Top 5 All Winners List 2003 & 2004 "The Rebirth explores the space between soul, ambient and jazz with refined musicianship to spare. Tight music. Period." - The Urban Network "...a storm of jazzy live action out of LA....solid R&B tinged tracks that remind us of the good old days of The Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai's first albums and the original Giant Step parties...lots of thick, layered vocals mixed with inner city heat." - URB Magazine

Im a "Cog" head (Incognito fan) and The Rebirth give that same vibe. I had the same experience as another reviewer had where I played this durring a small gathering and everyone was like "WHO IS THIS? I GOT TO HAVE IT". I love when I score with some new music that my friends havent heard yet and it knocks them out!!! I'm such a big kid. Thanks Rebirth, my friends and I are waiting for your next one.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-05-14

The Journey was pleasurable however longwinded. Don't get me wrong the
songs are good but I think the CD was too long. Most times CD's are short with only 12 tracks which is typical but when it is good you don't want it to stop. THis Journey was good songs but somewhat redundant towards the end. When you relay a message you have to let it stand and move on. I think some of the messages were repeated, it may be that they really wanted the people to understand their position (stance0 in the music world. But definately a nice collection of music especially for the neo-jazz inspired listeners.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-30

This is a beautiful project and should hold a place in anyones collection. I placed this on during a dinner party, and in a short time everyone was "Wow! Who's this?" and groovin' to it. It's Great! GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars SOUL GROUP FOR THE FUTURE.......2007-01-26

THE KAJMERE COMPILATION WHICH FEATURED THIS GROUP, WON ME OVER, HAD TO OWN THEIR CD , IT IS EXCELLENT RETRO SOUL, THROWBACK TO THE DAYS OF EWF,DONALD BYRD, HERBIE HANCOCK, THEY ALSO INCORPORATE MODERN GROOVES FOR THE NU-SOUL CROWD. OVERALL GOOD CD.

5 out of 5 stars My kind of music!.......2006-12-23

My best friend, who's a singer and has a very sound knowledge of what kind of music I like, introduced me to this band. I only had to listen to the first few bars of the opener, "This Journey In" to know that I needed to have this CD. I immediately ordered two copies - one for me and one for him.

This seven-piece band with Noelle Scaggs and Carlos "Loslito" Guaico doing most of the lead vocals give us funky, jazzy modern soul at it's very best with a distinct retro vibe. If you're a fan of early Incognito or early Brand New Heavies, you'll like these guys. I really don't know what else to say. This album reflects everything I love about music - Jazz-inspired, and led by beautifully played electric piano; pleasant vocals and positive lyrics - and it's shot right to the top of my best buys for this year, (excluding jazz) even above albums from the likes of the Brand New Heavies and Frank McComb. I haven't stopped playing it since it arrived earlier today. I also haven't felt like dancing in a long while, due to this, that and the other but I tell you, with this on the player, I've been finding it very hard to stay still. I put this CD on and it just takes me away. It's almost as if the CD has lifted my spirits. From beginning to end, this is my kind of music!

Why we don't see more bands like this on so-called music television channels, I'll never know but this is one band I'll be looking out for with a keen eye from now on. This is also another band I cannot wait to see perform live. One (wo)man's meat can often be another's poison but I'll be shocked if anyone reviews this album with anything less than the five stars they deserve.

Heck, just like an earlier reviewer, I'd give them ten stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars "I Feel Like Bustin Loose"...Go-go fans, meet your cousins.......2007-03-12

This CD is near and dear to my heart as a DC native who has a grandfather who hails from New Orleans. He took me to see Rebirth in New Orleans, and I've been a brass band junkie ever since. I'm a big fan of old school Dirty Dozen and Rebirth Brass Band. This compilation is a good way for those looking for an introduction to Rebirth to find out whether they prefer the jazz influenced, hip-hop, or trad sound of Rebirth.

I feel that Rebirth has three phases. First, they were kids from Treme trying to be like their heroes in bands like the Dirty Dozen. Early Rebirth is not really represented on this compilation and you're better off checking out the album "Here to Stay" if you want to hear that stuff. That's before they were with Rounder Records so I'm not suprised that it's not on the compilation. Second, they were the kings of New Orleans with Phil Frazier rocking the bottom on the tuba and Kermit Ruffins on the frontlines with a fat trumpet sound. "Do Whatcha Wanna" was a regional hit and it's on this compilation. Finally, Rebirth is kind of the old school hip-hop equivalent of the brass band movement. Tracks like "New Orleans Music" and the final track with "My Thing" represent Rebirth originals that have some hip-hop style chants in them.

Fans will like some of the cover tunes represented here. "Let's Do It Again" by the Staple Singers show their old school soul leanings and "Ate Up the Apple Tree" show New Orleans traditional sound. There's also excerpts from their monster 24 minute medley on their Live At the Maple Leaf LP. That's an album you need to hear in its entirety, though. For folks in the DC area, that's frequently available at the local library if you want to check out what they've been up to.

I'm really pleased to hear that Kermit Ruffins and the Rebirth linked up again on a new CD. Kermit left Rebirth a few years back to pursue more of a Louis Armstrong traditional sound. Hopefully, this new project means that the parting was amicable and Rebirth and Kermit can link up from time to time for positive projects.

Rebirth has done so much for New Orleans music, black music, jazz music, funk music, and just about any other kind of good music you can think of. It's a shame these brothers are underground.

For those who are Rebirth heads and already have a lot of their stuff, the cover of Bustin' Loose that opens the compilation is slammin'! I've always said that "Feel Like Funkin' It Up" is basically "Bustin' Loose" and they probably ought to give Chuck Brown from DC composer credit. Well, here they give the Godfather of Go-go his props and cover his tune straight up.

New Orleans brass bands and DC go-go need to get together now more than ever before with the way that DC gives New Orleans a raw shake on the Katrina stuff.

Please support this music and check this out....

Love her or loathe her, uber-diva Jennifer Lopez knows how to deliver on record. She understands how to make the most of her limited vocal range, choosing to surround herself with able producers Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland, Big Boi and Cory Rooney, who oversaw Lopez's first album, On the 6. The mix makes Rebirth far more enjoyable than it should be, coasting on midnight-groove ballads and polished dance tracks. Lopez's fourth studio album offers little insight into her much-gossiped-about persona, but it's an undeniably fun ride anyway. A blaring James Brown horn riff drills first single "Get Right" into your head almost immediately, and soon enough, you'll find yourself bopping to the beat. The Middle-Eastern flavor of "Step Into My World" is undeniably seductive, and it's actually enhanced by Lopez's wisp of a voice. "Whatever You Wanna Do" and "Cherry Pie" are solid dance tracks, the kind of grooves Janet Jackson made before she became a Superbowl afterthought. Elsewhere, the album is peppered with R&B ballads, much like Lopez's 2002 opus, This Is Me ... Then. Rebirth is hardly a groundbreaking affair, but it continues to showcase Lopez's skillful trend of producing solid, catchy, R&B-laced records. Nothing here ever sounds forced or canned, and in the world of MTV and radio edits, maybe that does make Lopez a bit of a revolutionary after all. --Joey Guerra

3 out of 5 stars Not J Lo's best album.......2007-07-13

I bought this album on iTunes and was dissapointed with J Lo. "This Is Me...Then" was probably her best album hands-down. "J Lo" comes in 2nd. I am a fan of miss Lopez and I think she can sing but she unfortunately wastes her voice on disposable tracks that aren't memorable. I loved "Get Right" and those horns that play in the background. "Cherry Pie" is also pretty catchy. I also like "Step Into My World" and "Hold You Down" featuring Fat Joe. Some of the songs on the album are just unlistenable. This was not much of a rebirth for J Lo. It pretty much kept to the same style of music as "J Lo" and "On The 6." Hopefully the next time she goes into the studio something better will come out. There are only a few listenable songs on the album and I hope J Lo releases a better album next time. Sorry but I give this a mixed review.

1 out of 5 stars Horridly Narcisstic.......2007-03-29

Jennifer Lopez is the grand diva of fantasy and media enterprise. Only because she is wealthy and shrewd can she get away with such drivel. She is a media machine and has a great following. Too bad nobody has the audacity in the music studio to simply state the obvious...the woman can't sing! Her hinchman, Marc Anthony, whom I once referred to as the grand Maestro of Salsa, has lost an excruciating amount of credibility amongst many of his fans by leaving his beautiful wife Dayanara and their toddler and new born son in order to runaway with and worship J-LO. He simply looks like a buffoon following the scent of this depraved and ingenious businesswoman. Jennifer has no talent but she has the PR pull to make this album platinum. How the public can see that she can't sing but still buys her album is simply a mystery to me. J-LO's voice is annoying, irritating, and lacks heart, but I guess it doesn't matter because she's like another Sanjaya of the current American Idol series. She simply sits pretty as others with true singing ability simply fall off the charts.

3 out of 5 stars Good Songs, Bad Voice.......2007-02-03

I'm writing this review late because I've had the album for about a year and started playing the cd again. When I'm in the mood I will listen to this album all day everyday. I'm not a fan of J.Lo's voice, but the production of the songs and the lyrics make them stand out from her lack of vocal skills. My favorite songs on the album are Ryde for you, I Love, Get Right. Overall, the album is average.

1 out of 5 stars Jennifer Lopez you cannot Sing! .......2007-01-20

Give it up already, Jenny from the Block. You can't sing. And you don't even have passion for music. I do not hear the passion. What is your style? You are all over the place. You whatever hoping something catches on and then you'll make it yours.

And am I the only one that thinks that pictures on the Rebirth cover look like a distorted fetus?

JLo proves that men rule the world. If you are "doable" and desired in that way, then you are a millionaire many times over.

1 out of 5 stars just like another paula abdul.......2007-01-08

her career is so similar to paula abdul it's not even funny! Both started out dancing. Paula worked with janet jackson in the mid 80's and appeared in her videos, J LO worked with janet in the mid 90's and appeared in a video of hers. Paula Abdul tried her hand at music in the late 80's as a dance-diva and J LO did the same thing in the late 90's. Both of their debut albums Forever Your Girl and On the 6 sold well, and better than their follow up albums. Early 1991, Paula Abdul released Spellbound and early 2001 J LO released J LO. Both of them had strong first singles and their albums fell off the charts pretty fast although both managed to reach 3 million(instead of 8 million and 5 million like their debuts) and have a lot of hits from their albums. Let's not forget to mention that paula briefly did acting as well and J LO is also an actress. This Is Me Again didn't make a dent in the charts and Rebirth was the final nail in the coffin in 2005, just like paula's Head Over Heels. The first single from their final albums both had good videos(My Love Is For Real & Get Right) but by then it was too late and the public already had enough of them. I expect to see J LO release a compilation album by 2010 and appearing as a host or something 10 years from now.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended album!!.......2007-06-23

I was a huge fan of Spineshank and I was sad when I heard they had disbanded. Silent Civilian came to be a really good surprise to me. Although I bought their album solely because it was Santo's new band it has nothing in common with Spineshank aside from being sung by the same vocalist. This is metal in its purest form!! It may sound like other popular metalcore bands but I think these guys are making what I'm calling one of the most inspired materials created in the last few years in the metal scene. Rebirth Of The Temple is a collection of fast, aggressive, and politically driven songs that will make everybody's veins filled with a rush of adrenalin. My favorite bands are Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Soilwork, and Silent Civilian has surely made its way into my best of best list. I'm really happy for Johnny for him having returned in such great inspiration and I'm already looking forward for their new album.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Metal is back, Silent Civilian proves it.......2007-04-02

If you think this is some kind of new wave of metal bullcrap, then go elsewhere. If you're looking for that nu-metal sound, then pop in an In Flames CD or something. Silent Civilian is the screaming, bruising, shredding proof that metal still exists, complete with guitar solos and lyrics that blow your mind.

Right from the eerie intro, to the epic guitars in "The Song Remains Un-Named," right through "Bitter Pill" to the closing called "Live Again," this CD will blow you away as you re-assure youself that this was released at a time where OzzFest began to sell out.

In addition to the songs previously mentioned, this debut album from Johnny Santos' new project has other highlights, like "Lies in the House of Shame," which in addition to heavy guitar and drum power, also has cryptic yet meaningful lyrics about our own foundations.

Then we're taken to "Wrath," my personal favorite. The song just flat-out rocks, and that's just a tip in this iceberg. "Falling Down" brings back the thrash sound of their inspirations, including their earliest, iron Maiden.

Actually, every song on this album is great on its own right. If you're still reading this, why haven't you bought it?

5 out of 5 stars Best Damn CD Ever.......2007-02-16

This by far is one of the greatest CD's I have ever spent money on

4 out of 5 stars Jonny Santos' New Project: Awesome.......2007-01-12

I was a big fan of Spineshank and when I heard that Jonny Santos was leaving for Silent Civilian I knew that they had to be great. The two bands are of very different styles, Spineshank's music being filled with more techno like beats and sounds while Silent Civilian is straight up metalcore with screamed vocals and most songs having a melodic chorus.

Although the songs get kinda repetitive (thus the 4 stars) everything else they have done is awesome. I see their next album being one of the greats in this genre. Although some people might not like their very political message in most of their songs. My favorites on this album are: Bitter Pill, Blood Red Sky, Force Fed, Live Again, and The Song Remains Unnamed.
If you like melodic metalcore with a real message instead of just words then Silent Civilian is for you.

5 out of 5 stars very impressed.......2006-12-15

As soon as I heard this I thought Spineshank meets The Autumn Offering. I was disappointed when Santos left Spineshank but I was very pleased with this SC album. Typical metalcore with some above average solos but his vocals bring it over the top for me. Enjoyable album if you like metalcore with melodic choruses.

5 out of 5 stars These guys should be huge..........2007-02-25

Big Cock should be the biggest rock band on the planet. I think a name change could help that as nobody in their right mind will ever say the name on the radio or TV. I love every song on this CD and Robert Mason is a great singer and front man. There is no lack of attitude on this CD and these guys walk it like they talk it.

5 out of 5 stars Cock rock has been reborn.......2006-01-29

This is an absolutley amazing album. Not one bad song. All melodic 80's inspired, inuendo packed, hard rockin' sing along songs. A must have. I heard about it on the net at Sleezerocks.com and then on the www.hairballjohn.com net radio show. These guys don't let you down...EVER.
I crank this one to 11 in my car and I can sing along with them all.
Big Cock rocks hard!

2 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2007-05-07

Public Enemy has always set a high standard for their music and message. They could always be counted on to break down reality, put it in a groove, and drive a message home so hard that it was inspiring and also a call to action on all levels. I know they still have the ability to do that. I see them live regulary in NYC just about everytime they are there. I was there when Chuck D did the guest shot with George Clinon and P-Funk at the Appollo last year. I'm a die hard fan. This album however is very dissapointing. Public Enemy never condescended to profanity laced tirades. They were always too smart, too intelligent for that. On this latest peice of work there are so many "F's" and "MF's" that, unlike "Bum Rush" "Fear of a Black Planet" "Nation" or "Apocalypse" I won't even share it with my kids or the other young people that I know. I'm a youth counselor and have worked with young people for years. I like to share music with them that has a solid , moral message. PE has always fit the bill in my book. That, being said, I was really looking forward to this CD based on the reviews I've read here on AMAZON.COM. I feel like I've been hoodwinked! When your vocabulary is deep, you don't need to resort too profanity to make a point. There are plenty of words available with which to communicate. With the addition of PARIS their deleivery has definitely changed. It's not that my ears are so "pure" that I'm offended. It's just that the CD is laced with the stuff. Also, assassinating the President and burning down the White House are not going to get us where we as BLACK people need to be. That's just dumb. We are at WAR and one of the first things the devil tries to control is your tongue. If he can control your tongue, he can control your body and control your world. Unfortunately, on this piece, PE's articulation of the issues has gone into the gutter. Yes, they are still talking about things that need to be said that no other rappers en mass are not doing. There are a few exceptions. My guess is that they are trying to reach the "Thugs" and convert them to polital and social action rather than "Pimpin', ho'in, dealin' and blingin'. I understand the sentiment, but the gutter language tactics turns me off. One of the things I have always liked about PE is that the delivery was smart, intelligent, and meaningful. This record is profane and mean sprited, not just angry. It makes it hard for me to identify with where they are coming from this time because there is no real HOPE displayed here. Not even a glimmer of PEACE and LOVE. Too negative. It just doesn't make one think about solutions to problems. It just expounds on the problems themseleves. I don't want our young people to grow up sounding like this. We need a revolution and that starts in the home with the parents or guradians. We need a sense of identity, meaning and morals. If we don't have that, we will end up living and sounding just like the rest of the lost people in this world. Living beneath our God given privledges and always looking for someone or something to blame rather than taking full responsibilty for our own lives. God bless all who read this and have a nice day.

4 out of 5 stars PE still pumpin' out the funk..........2006-08-30

I have to say that PE is one of my all-time favorite hip-hop groups of all time, having made three of the greatest hip-hop albums ever ("It takes a Nation...", "Fear of...", "Apocalypse..."). Still, I have been less than impressed with their output after the "holy trinty". Each album contained at least a few good songs, but what previously made PE so impressive was their ability to make cohesive, exciting and surprising albums as a whole, not just a few good singles. It's been quite some time since PE put out a CD that didn't feel some-what half-baked. Which it's why it's a pleasure to report that for the first time since PE's golden age, they have made an album that hangs together in it's entirety. Paris was a good choice to collaborate with; his sound is definitely old-school, yet it still sounds fresh overall, giving PE a much-needed shot of musical (and lyrical) adrenaline. Still, it does not even comes close to "It Takes A Nation...", "Fear of..." or even "Yo, Bum Rush..." (but what could?), and the overall production suffers at times from an identity crisis that often stems from such collaborations. Still, a fine effort, overall. Now I realize some hip-hop lovers (are you listening, reviewer "Venom"?) are eternally stuck at age 14, and can only enjoy hip-hop for it's oh-so-very tired thug posturing, braggadocio and celebration of materialism; I suppose it goes well with sitting in your bedroom fantasizing about empty empowerment, while self-medicating to some prime chronic. I, for one, am tired of the caricature hip-hop has become (it's sadly following the same path as rock music did in the late 80's, when rock music became a bloated, empty affair with crap "Hair Metal" bands that crooned about hot chicks, hot cars and lots of cash). Ever since PE's poularity declined, there's been a void that has yet to be filled in Hip Hop, and I do hope some young gun steps up to the plate. Until then, new PE is always a welcome addition to my MP3 player... even if they now are old farts. Now, if only Chuck D would smack some sense into Flava Flav regarding his horrifically embarrassing televsion career...

4 out of 5 stars `Rebirth' of Rap Pioneers.......2006-06-27

Artist: Public Enemy
Album: Rebirth of a Nation
Label: Guerrilla Funk

Rebirth of a Nation is Public Enemy's 11th studio album. It is also the first album where frontman Chuck D delegated most of the writing & all of the production duties. Bay Area-based rapper Paris serves as chief lyricist and producer for this project, and it's released on his own Guerrilla Funk label. With his own history as a politically minded rapper, Paris is a sympathetic facilitator for the hard-edged social commentary that Public Enemy is known for. Rebirth follows barely six months after the band's New Whirl Odor release late last year. But Rebirth is decidedly not a bunch of leftover session cuts. Paris manages to bring out the best in Chuck, Flavor Flav and Professor Griff on the LP's 16 tracks. Rebirth's rhythm tracks take cues from Public Enemy's early releases, updated with the decidedly funk-driven soundscapes that Paris is known for. Samples are mostly eschewed for live instruments, adding to the LP's organic feel.

The title track, a play on words from the D.W. Griffith movie, finds Chuck announcing Public Enemy's return to a hip-hop world that has gotten more grim since they first came on the scene: "We come rough with the rhythm and rhymes that pack 'em in/ Bust with the rhythm that shine back once again/ Still ride with releases reaching each/ Still strive to revive and keep the peace.." "Plastic Nation" indicts plastic surgery obsession: "Was all part of the plan to keep her lookin' right/ Figured she could be Janet if she took the knife/ It's not a sin to be thin, she tryin' hard to fit in/ Knowin' soon she'll be a citizen of the plastic nation." "Hell No We Ain't Alright" laments the Hurricane Katrina tragedy: "Shelter? Food? Wasssup, where's the water? No answers from disaster, them masses be hurtin'/ So who... they call, Halliburton? Son of a Bush, how you gonna trust that cat?"

Paris himself takes the spotlight on a handful of tracks, including "Hannibal Lecture": "Same racism profiling each of us all/ Same outsiders where we live enforcing the law/ Gats clappin' on the streets, gunplayin' with heat/ Same prisons full of brothers herded in like sheep." Other guests making their voices known on the LP include N.W.A. alumnus M.C. Ren and former Ice Cube protégé Kam. Flavor Flav's solo talents are highlighted on the whimsical "They Call Me Flavor": "Good morning heartaches and tell me what's new/ Got nothin' else to do but drink brew/ Tryin' to feel the flow, gettin' so low/ Standin' here drinkin' a quart of Old Gold." Flav keeps it professional here, managing to avoid plugging his many reality show stints.

Public Enemy's Bomb Squad produced California rapper Ice Cube's first LP back in 1990. Sixteen years later, Public Enemy finds reinvention in another west-coast colleague and a solid showcase for a veteran hip-hop band.

2 out of 5 stars Standard Keith Sweat.......2006-12-29

On his Rebirth CD released in 2002 Keith Sweat was a comeback, however because he's been putting out records consistently since the late '80s, and it's not really a creative reawakening since he hasn't changed anything about his game. In the end, Rebirth is really just another Keith Sweat album with promisng ballads. One would have thought that Mr. Sweat would linked up with some new young talent at the time to give him a fresh sound, espically on the up-tempo but the ballads are really the only thing that save this CD. The first single One on One is very good as is Wonderful Thang, but everything is kind of by the numbers.

4 out of 5 stars Listen Again.......2006-10-01

Cmon guys, we are talking about keith Sweat here. The guy is a legend and although i agree he is so much better suited singing ballads, there are some great ballads on this album. One on one for example. I could play this song over and over again. Makes my body melt. And Wonderful Thang. Quite possibly one of Keith Sweats best ever songs. Please listen to these two tracks again and reconsider your opinion of Keith Sweat and what he is today. Keith isnt about lyrics, he's about sound. This album was a big deal for keith. Hence the name Rebirth. Im sure he put a lot of work into this album and i hope you havent written him off just yet. I will forever be a keith sweat fan and regardless of who comes along in the future, I have no hesitation in saying that Keith Sweat will always be my number 1 favourite artist.

2 out of 5 stars hope sweat takes note of these reviews.......2005-06-27

I must agree with the negative reviews of this album, together with the assessment of Keith Sweat's recent music. Obviously Make It Last Forever is a classic album with a unique sound and it cannot be replicated. With his subsequent 4 albums inclusive of Twisted, Keith Sweat defined a style of music and this is what the fans have come to love and expect. Sweat consistently produced excellent albums with only a few tracks I would leave off a playlist. The reverse is true with the last 3 albums: there are only a few tracks I would include in a playlist. I agree with the assessment that he has tried to cross over to a more hip hop influenced style which does not make the most of his voice, and leaves a hole in the Urban market which he used to fill. I was just listening to Get Up On It from his 4th album and was remembering how I looked forward to his new releases, but not now. These days it's not cool to be soul artist and the record companies just want to make money off all the idiots who buy music for the lifestyle that it is shown to represent in the media. I'm not optimistic about any comeback, but you never know. Bottom line: forget last 3 albums, buy first 5.

2 out of 5 stars So Sad.......2005-05-26

I am or should I say was a Keith fanatic but plain and simple, Keith makes the mistakes as many artist do; he forgets about the audience that he came in with. Obviously he is focusing on the younger listeners with his latest three albums. I was very disappointed with this entire CD. The songs were not well thought out and the writting for these songs suck. Keith, two words, Come Back.

3 out of 5 stars Everyone is right - Keith stick to Ballards.......2003-10-04

Although I like fast tracks such as "ladies night" and "gots ta have it" these tracks do not bring out the best of Keith. The rebirth in my opinion, starts at no.7.

"one on one", "show me" (the best on the album), "in and out", "can it be" are all Hot ballards.
(Ain't got a clue why some people don't like "can it be". One of my favourite tracks on the album.)

Anyway, the album is worth the purchase, but only for the ballards .

Album Description

Vocalist Edu Falaschi, drummer Aquiles Priester, and bassist Felipe Andreoli have joined founding members, guitarists and main songwriters Kiko Loureiro and Rafael Bittencourt to complete the new line-up of Angra.

Listeners will immediately notice even more powerful guitars, with catchy riffs and memorable solos, vocals with huge feeling, and the thundering rhythm section, that gather the strength of heavy metal with classical influences and typical Brazilian sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Triumphant Return.......2007-04-14

And to think I was worried when I first heard that Angra "broke up" in 2000. Little did I know that the result of the split would result in not one but two great progressive power metal bands. Original vocalist Andre Matos, bassist Luis Mariutti, and drummer Ricardo Confessori left to start the excellent, yet short-lived Shaman, while the remaining members brought in some new blood, most notably vocalist Edu Falaschi, and re-launched Angra in 2001 with the album Rebirth.

As much as I love the early Angra albums, Rebirth is the album I'm most likely to wear out from repeated listens. Rebirth comes across as a more polished, more mature version of the band's debut album Angels Cry. All of the elements that made that album a classic are present here, from the high-speed guitars to the prominent keyboards to the fantastic melodies to Angra's signature Brazilian musical elements. On top of that, the band finally has a vocalist who doesn't have to rely exclusively on high notes. Edu Falaschi is a major talent, and his powerful soaring voice is no doubt a welcome change for those who were put off by Andre Matos's high-pitched style (which to be honest I never minded).

This album is so powerful and so melodic that it took all of 30 seconds of the first song (after the brief instrumental intro) to have me totally sold. Very few power metal albums leave me breathless like Rebirth did, and six years later it still has every bit as much an impact. Aside from that throwaway intro track, there isn't a weak moment on the whole album. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Every single song is strong.

Put Rebirth right up there with Holy Land as the crown jewels of the Angra discography. Fans of great melodic power metal, from Iron Maiden and Helloween to Dragonforce and Brainstorm need to add Rebirth to their collections.

4 out of 5 stars Ambitious, energetic Progressive Power Metal........2007-03-16

4.5 stars. Most of this album is truly inspired and enjoyable throughout. However, there are a few moments, small sections of songs, that feel strained; and the final track falls completely flat. After many great songs explode with refreshing energy and intricate arrangements, the last slow song simply cannot compete with the rest of the album. While I prefer "Temple of Shadows" over this release, Angra has shown with their last three releases that Kamelot has some serious competition as the most consistent Progressive Power Metal band around. Of course, Pagan's Mind and Lanfear might have something to say about that. But with "Rebirth", "Temple of Shadows", and their latest effort "Aurora Consurgens" Angra are holding firm in their resolve as one of the elite bands in the genre. For newcomers, the enhanced version of "Temple of Shadows" with the bonus DVD in 5.1 surround sound is the place to start; but "Rebirth" and "Aurora Consurgens" are both great additions to any Power Metal library.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-04-09

This is probably the best album by Angra, maybe only second to Holy Land, but really, this is amazing. Its heavier than the stuff Andre Matos came up with, with the exception of Fireworks, but its not as heavy as Temple of Shadows. The songs are perfect, and the singing is amazing. Then, the melodic solo's by the two guitarists...really great songwriting and performance full of energy and creativity.

The album starts out with In Excelsis, a prelude to Nova Era, which is powerful, orchestral, with great melody, sort of the signature song of the album. Nova Era-the new beginning as informed Angra fans know that several members left after the album Fireworks.

Millenium sun is a bit of a slower, melodic piece, and then comes Acid Rain, one of the best tracks on the album. This song has the best singing of any track on the album, very powerful, with some great instrumentation too. Next comes Heroes of Sand, a very traditional 'power metal' song with the vocal development as it gets more powerful throughout the song, really good.

Next comes unholy wars, which is some sort of tribal song...it starts out with a really good guitar intro, and then the 'tribal' vocals come in, and its a good song, but not one of the best. Rebirth, another 'signature' song of the album isn't as heavy as some of the others and really develops throughout the song.

Judgement day in my opinion was the only track that bored me, probably with Visions Prelude, but Running Alone was the real masterpiece. They even threw in a flute there, very perfectly arranged, with a great sound, and the best part is this amazingly powerful and melodic solo with a piano and a keyboard towards the last quarter or so of the song...very cool.

Overall, this release gets a 5/5 as one of the best Angra albums. Its good in a different way than Holy Land, it seems this new era of Angra is more towards the metal side than the progressive, but still, amazing album.

4 out of 5 stars A good effort, but not on par with Temple of Shadows.......2006-02-22

Angra has become one of my favorite progressive metal bands. Their most recent effort, Temple of Shadows has also become one of my top ten favorite albums of all time. A curious thing about prog metal bands is that they seem to get better with each successive album. In my opinion, Angra is no exception. Although Rebirth is a good album, particularly the opening tracks, In Excelisis/Nova Era, it doesn't quite live up their latest work. The CD starts off with a bang but, unlike Shadows, never really reaches the crescendo you hope for. If you're new to Angra, I'd recommend starting off with Temple of Shadows and working backward from there.

4 out of 5 stars really good.......2005-10-25
