After marrying him in 1968, June Carter was usually perceived as an adjunct to Johnny Cash. Nothing could have been farther from the truth. June was an all-stops-out entertainer: a goofy comedienne, a big-hearted actress who studied under Lee Strasberg, and a dynamic singer unequivocally rooted in tradition as the youngest member of the pioneering Carter family, but just as steadfastly living in the here and now. Finally, there's an album to prove it (two discs, actually, covering the years 1939-2003). To begin to perceive all she was capable of, check out the eternal sorrow of "Without a Love," the pop-folkish "He's Solid Gone," the hillbilly luncacy of "No Swallerin' Place," the rambunctious "Juke Box Blues," the bizarre exotica of "The Heel," the agility and effortless flow of "Tall Loverman," the anxious fessing-up of her own "Ring of Fire," her no-nonsense "Jackson" duet with Cash, and her strength of conviction in "Appalachian Pride"--as well as her way with traditional material from the Carters and others. June had pizzaz, mountain style. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars Tribute.......2007-03-05

I am taking the time today to review an album on which one of music's most important ladies finally emerges from the shadows to stand in the fore-front.Disc 11. Keep On The Sunny Side (3 stars) this is a good way to gain background on June's early life with her family. Being an intro however, it is short.2. O Susannah (5 stars) I honestly dont think I've ever heard someone this young sing this way. Excellent!3. Root, Hog, Or Die (3 stars) While good vocals are featured, the song today sounds somewhat dated and hillbilly. I do like it though.4. Baby It's Cold Outside (4 stars) This song is humorous. I like it. The brothers persuade June to stay because it is cold outside and also with a little "medicine".5. Country Girl (3 stars) In this song June tells people not to expect her to be all Hollywood because she is country through and through.6. Foggy Mountain Top (5 stars) This is a Carter family classic updated. June, Maybelle, Helen, and Anita define harmony in this track. Alternating the lead in the verses and the yodel at the end are perfect.7. Fair and Tender Ladies (5 stars) Once again the harmony is perfect. Also notable is the homespun instrumental achievements.8. He's Solid Gone (5 stars) At the risk of being repetitive, the harmonies once again soar.9. Jukebox Blues (5 stars) On this track, fans find out where Reese Witherspoon found the inspiration for her wonderful rendition for this song in the film "Walk The Line."10. No Swallerin' Place (5 stars) June tackles this track with breakneck speed. It is amazong how she manages to stay in tune.11. Love Old Crazy Love (3 stars) June duets with first husband Carl Smith on this track. June's country wit really shines on this one.12. He Went Slippin' Around (3 stars) This reminds me of a hillbilly version of The Andrews Sister's.13. I Guess I Told You Off (2 stars) Once again too cutesy hillbilly for me. Hoe Down bit is funny though.14. Strange Woman (5 stars) June really shows off her vocal abilities in this one. Sisters are backing. This sounds alot like a Loretta Lynn tune.15. The Heel (4 stars) This song shows the dark side of the mountains. It is almost like a mini-movie. I prefer the version on "The Ring of Fire : June Carter's Greatest Hits."16. How Did You Get Away From Me (3 stars) This song shows a possessive side of June pertaining to Johnny. It is comical though.17. Tall Lover Man (4 stars) This is a June penned tune. It is a wonderful murder ballad.18. A Love To Call My Own (2 stars) This reminds me of Sammi Smith. I'm just not used to hearing June sing this slow and quietly. I do like it though.19. The Ring Of Fire (4 stars) This is the Carter women. It is a mix between the first recorded version (Anita Carter) and Johnny's super hit version.20. Keep On The Sunnyside (5 stars) This version is The Carter Family featuring Johnny Cash. This sounds as if it was taken directly from The Johnny Cash Show.Disc 21. Jackson (5 stars) This song needs no introduction with it's laid back country sass and swagger. Perfection!2. If I Were A Carpenter (5 stars) One of the best duets from one of country's best duos. This song always reminds me of medieval times with knights and ladies and chivalry.3. The Loving Gift (3 stars) Another Johnny/June duet. This song seems to tell their story perfectly. Just a little too slow for me.4. A Good Man (5 stars) This song proved June can stand alone vocally. Very upbeat with a late 60's 70's style. Religious refrences abound in this tune.5. Ole Slewfoot (5 stars) Personal favorite. This down home country ditty brings june together with Johnny, daughters Carlene, Rosey, and Rosanne. This tells the story of a bear who continually makes a pest of himself. June gets fed up and goes on a rampage after it with a rifle.6. Losin' You (4 stars) Another June solo. This song tells of the price of cheating.7. Shadow of a Lady (5 stars) This song has a moral in telling the story of a born again prostitute.8. Gatsby's Restaraunt (5 stars) This song finds June in a wacky situation involving a horse, the It/

5 out of 5 stars Gift for my Dad.......2006-12-30

I bought this Cd and a couple of others for my Dad's Christmas gift. He loves this CD, said it's the best in his collection. Now he wants a set for the house and his truck ! I also got him the Best of Johnny and June and the Carter Sister's and Mother Mabel. He grew up listening to them sing on the radio, and he said this reminded him of when he was young. So for that I give it 5 big Stars !!!

5 out of 5 stars JUNE IS AMAZING IN EVERYTHING SHE DOES!.......2006-12-27

June Carter Cash: so many thoguhts come up at the name. They should. June Carter Cash was much more than just a singer, but an experienced comedienne, and such the instrumentalist. Walk the Line just showed you a bit of June's music, and there is truly much more! Keep on the Sunny Side introduces you to June's music and is abosolutely sensational. June has done an extroadinary job, just like she always does.

We start off way back in 1939 when she was just a little youngster singing the original Carter Family theme song 'Keep on the Sunny Side.' You can tell even in these old recordings, June was on the right foot for sucess.
"Oh! Susanna" is next. This familiar tune was June's first solo. She sings it loud and proud and even you can tell by how confident she is singing it, that she is a born to be star, just like her mama.
Next is "Root, Hog or Die," one of my very favorites! It has a good beat and Is fun to sing along to, and Jun even throughs in some comedy.
In 'Baby It's Cold Outside" June pairs up with Homer and Jethro to sing a classic favorite. This however, is sung mountain style!! With hats lookin' swell, and maybe just a half a jug more, you'll be laughing and singing along, just having a great time!
"Country Girl," is my favorite song on Disc One, it shows how a country girl can just be satified with life as a country girl! This comedy is a great sing and you'll love it and play it every day at least twice!
Now we head in to Mother Maybelle and The Carter Sisters. "Foggy Mountain Top" is a great song and has a good beat, and it really shows you the Carter Sisters. It's a great sing and I love it!
"He's Solid Gone," is a reamke by the Carter Sisters of the Carter family song "The Cannonball." There is just somethign about the song that makes you feel good. Is it how the girls harmonize so great, or maybe just the carfree tune? Whatever it is, "He's Solid Gone," will cheer you up any day!
"Juke Box Blues," is a June Caretr classic. This good tune will cheer you up any day of the week with it's bouncy beat and how June's voice flows with the song.
'No Swallerin' Place" is one of june's comedies. It was written with Frank Loesser and June does a great, comedic job of singing it! It will become your favorite faster than you can believe!
June sings 'Love Oh Crazy Love" with her first husband, Carl Smith. Carl adn Juen were both country singers, so they did a great job on this comedy. However, June and Carl didn't lvie happily ever after together.
The Carter sisters are back to sing 2 favorites "He went Slippin' Around," and "Well, I guess I told you off," starring one of June's characters "Little Junie Carter." These are both great songs and are very memorable.
June plays another unforgettable character in "The Heel," about a love obseessed women who is dating a cheatin' man and is a woould be killer. "I'd be the chewin' gum that clings to that dirty lowdown heel," June says in the song.
We all know "Ring of Fire," right? This time, instead of Johnny Cash singing it, the writer (June) and her family sing it. It's a good twist on a Johnny Cash classic and probably his most signature song!

Now on to disc two:

Everyone knows Johnny and June's siganture song "Jackson," and what great way to start off the second disc. Following Jackson is, "If I were a carpenter," a song turned into a duet by Johnny and June. Finally the two are married and perform "The Loving Gift," a sentimental song written by Kris Kristofferson.
"A good Man," was written during the Vietnam war and tells about how with the good Lord, we can do anything if we pray.
"Ole Slewfoot," is sung by June and her entire family! With a fiddle in the backaround and an easy to dance to beat, it's a great song that even has a solo spot for June's son, John Carter Cash!
"Losin' You", and "The Shadow of a Lady," are songs from the heart that June wrote. They are very similar but also very different with. With their unique style of music, they show June's many sides.
"Gatsby's Restaraunt" is about a restaurant that June often visited in New York City. This comedy is great and features ehr daughter Rosey singing backup.
"The L & N don't stop here anymore" sounds like something Loretta Lynn would sing, especially because in the song, June is a coal miner's daughter. it's a really good song ans is very different from most of June's work.
"Appalachian Pride," is my favorite song on disc two. It is a calming song, and is peaceful and has a good message in it about how you can be a poor appalachian family and still be rich in your heart if you loved God. It also makes a wonderful lullabye or realxing song.
"I love you Sweetheart" is a good song. It has a good beat, but also is soft and good for a lullabye or just pouring some coffee in a mug and sitting down on a warm couch.
"Far Side Banks of Jordan" is a duet with Johnny and June, and was also one of June's favorites. In the song, June says "But if it proves to be his will that I am first to cross, and somehow I've a feelin' it will be, when it comes your time to travel likewise don't feel lost, for I will be the first one that you'll see."
"Will the Circle be Unbroken," is a timeless Carter Family song that shows emotion the whole way through. In someof these songs, you can tell that June was a very sentimental person and said what she meant.
We end it with "Keep on the Sunny Side," June's first song and last song. June sings as she can in this last song, to prove she can press on till teh day she dies.

We hold June in our hearts forever. I know she loved me and I loved her very much. Sometimes, if I listen to these CD's, I can feel her spirit fill up the room, and everyone's hearts.

God Bless You June,
June

5 out of 5 stars June: A Country Tradition.......2006-05-31

You wouldn't think that a 7th grader like me would like old country music by June Carter Cash right? Think again! Who doesn't love the blue-eyed, high pitched, country legend sweetheart?! Oh, you're not a fan? You will be when you start listening to this!

"Keep on the Sunny Side" is the perfect way to get to know June's music! It has everything from the 1939 "Root, Hog, or Die" to the classic remake of the carter family's "Keep on the Sunny Side." You've got from Johnny to Carl Smith, to even all 3 Carter sisters! Some highlights are "He went Slippin' Around", "Jackson", "Love, Oh Crazy Love", and "No Swallerin' Place". And beleive me, there is much, much more! The entire package even includes a 7 page book that tells about June's life. I learned a lot of my knowledge of June from this book. For instance, did you know that she was married to a Nashville Police officer named "Rip Nix"? But the best part is the music! There are high spirited songs to cheer you up, or get you dancing! Listening to these CD's are part of my daily schedule actually!

So, now are you interested? Honestly, if you buy this one of a kind pack, you will surely not regret it! So what are you waiting for? Buy this CD right now and get listening!

5 out of 5 stars June: Still a Sensation!.......2006-05-18

When I first Listened to "Jukebox Blues" I loved it, and honestly bought the alubms just for that song, but I listened to the entire albums the whole way through. Now I love every song! If you like clasic 70's country than this CD is for you. Bring back memories of deer hunting with my Dad and Brothers.

4 out of 5 stars from the vaults.......2005-03-20

"Fightin' Side of Me," was recorded live in Philadelphia in the late '60s or early '70s, when protesting the Vietnam war was all the rage. This is the better of the two live Haggard albums I own, and I love his impressions, along with the novelty song "Harold's Super Service," available no place else. That one inspired a story by Jean Shepherd for "Playboy," about a pump jockey. Any song that can get Jean Shepherd interested is worth hearing--and singing. The truly weird part of this CD is just this--the first part, "Just Between the Two of Us," isn't Merle Haggard. That's a Buck Owens album. There's no mistake whatsoever. So, this is the oddest combo on one CD I ever heard. Luckily I enjoy Buck, so no problem, and I would have paid the full price just for the live Haggard album alone if I had to. a real treat.

5 out of 5 stars Merle Haggard "Live In Muskogee Oklahoma" from 1969.......2004-04-20

I own the vinyl version and couldn't wait for this album to come out in CD form. Another album where Merle is at his very best.

what a great album! my dad had this album on 8 track when i was a kid. i've been looking for it for 25 years and finally someone has re-released it! this is hag and the strangers at their best. the highlight of the album for me is merle doing his impersonations of marty robbins, hank snow, johnny cash, and a killer buck owens that you would swear is really him! if you're a haggard fan this is a must have. if i could own only one hag album, this would be it!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonder harmony and soul.......2005-08-05

This is a great introduction to III Tyme Out. Across the Miles is my favorite song on the album but they are all great as usual.

5 out of 5 stars "ol Golden Days of Vocal Bluegrass Jesus Harmony.......2004-07-14

This is the second identical CD I bought after the first became defective. Repeat buys of same CDs goes across my nature and is a testamony of variety, quality, and down-home comfort.

3TO has a distinctive sound of all male harmony with wide sweeping swings in pitch, pace, and instrumentations of country devices.

To me they have merged the wonderful sound of country music with unabashed Jesus praise. The wonderful bridge they built cleans up and crosses today's new-age Country Music of blatent pollution of adultry, booze, sex, and cars (I call idolitry).

But it's not your church hymn rewrites so get ready to tap a toe, drum your fingers on wood, and sing with teh group!!

Refreshing and spiritually rewarding is what I feel and probably is something Saul felt when he asked David to play for him...

5 out of 5 stars Lots of former experience now blended to perfection.......1999-08-21

Third tyme out's group has former experience and now they combine this experience to form one of the top notch bluegrass bands. Russell Moore and Ray Deaton are award winning singers. This is one of my favorite bluegrass gospel cds. If you get a chance to hear this group, DON'T PASS IT UP.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Intro to American Classical Music - Almost a Short Course!.......2005-07-12

Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.

There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.

I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.

      4 out of 5 stars Still a great singer.......2007-02-18

I have been a huge fan of Bonnie Koloc's since the '70's and seeing her so many times at the Earl of Old Town. ...we shared the blues...
My favorite old song is "Crazy Mary". I miss the old songs so much and would love to get them on CD's. My albums are worn out! Please get the old albums on CD.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe this album is almost 20 years old!!!.......2006-10-18

I am listening to it as I write this review. I haven't played the CD in years and I forgot how electrifying the album is. Anyone who has ever heard "If My Love Were a River" or "Mama Chicago" knows what I'm talking about. And the title song is a classic.

I saw Bonnie promote this album at the Bottom Line in New York City in 1987. I was unfamiliar with her at the time. I actually went to see Mimi Farina, who opened for her. Bonnie just blew me away with her voice and her sensuous musicality, and the material was excellent! I remember she encored with Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies." What an evening!! When the show was over I rushed to buy the vinyl album which was on sale in the club.

I eventually sought out all of Bonnie's solo LPs, on the Ovation and Epic labels. She is such an incredible natural resource and I'm grateful to have been reminded of that in listening to this album.

3 out of 5 stars Great Voice - Lacks Soul.......2004-12-06

' just saw Bonnie at the Old Town School of Folk Music yesterday where she reprised some of the songs in this album. Her voice and the backup artists were great and many of the pieces are entertaining. She should stay away from the R&B styled songs as she doesn't have the gritty power and range for it. Instead of being dynamic, pieces like "You Played Me Just Like a Piano" came out sounding like a suburbanite's idea of R&B.

If you like Bonnie Koloc and engaging music this is a fine album.

5 out of 5 stars ATTENTION ALL KOLOC FANS!!!.......2003-10-29

Just saw Bonnie Koloc in an intimate little concert in LaCrosse, Wisconsin (October 24th, 2003). She was absolutely amazing and I am happy to report that some of her fans have talked her into her own website which they are currently developing, and a brand new CD of many of her hits (a few of which she admits to have forgotten about). It should be out in the next few months!!! Keep looking as she is more than worth the wait!

4 out of 5 stars Where are her early recordings?.......2003-09-13

I'm a suburban Chicagoite who used to go to Bonnie's gigs. I bought her records and have wondered where I can buy CD versions of her albums. Where are these CD's? Who can get them made? I know there is a market out there for her wonderful voice and music.

4 out of 5 stars Good double CD at a good price.......2005-06-22

2 CD for only 6$ plus shipping and handling is a good price. The quality and the choices of tunes are good and the quality of recording is good too. The orchestras, the singers and the choirs are good too. So, if the titles of tunes please you, it is a good 2-CD boxset to buy. If you are an American, I am sure that you know all these tunes. If you are not an American, you will say to yourself : "I think that I have heard this song somewhere."
