A fine collection, well recorded, & a bargain, to boot!.......2005-10-08

This collection of pieces is a real treat for RVW fans. The recordings of Flos campi (surely one of RVW's most unusual and mystical works, somehow managing to capture the elusive emotional/spiritual environment of the Song of Solomon) and the Suite for Viola and Orchestra (rarely recorded, but a delectable mixing of folk-song, Bach, Bartok-like passages, and rich, resonant melodies redolent of autumn) would be enough in themselves. Couple them with the Six Studies in English Folksong for clarinet & piano (a rare piece of Vaughn Williams chamber music) and the ravishing instrumental version of Serenade to Music, and you have a truly admirable set. This is an assemblage of a number of earlier recordings: in this case, I think, the cream has been skimmed and put into one convenient two-disc collection. The recorded sound is good throughout, and the notes well-written and interesting - an excellent Chandos release.

Perfect and otherworldly.......2003-10-06

I am a rock musician but I must say that there is little other music on this green earth that is as gorgeous as that of Vaughan Williams. Some folk and country airs can touch the melancholy that VW can, some of Bach's or Ravel's pieces maybe. But when I hear music like Flos Campi 2nd and 6th movements, or the beautiful short pieces that comprise Six Studies in English Folk Song ... well, they leave me breathless. Parts of Flos Campi sounds like VW has distilled all the tinsel and magic, childlike wonder and true peace of something as hard to define as Christmas and made it into music. Serenade to Music in it's pure orchestral form still remains a glorius composition, even without the vocalists. My, when it hits that early theme in the latter part with full force and orchestra ... And the lovely Linden Lea and that wonderful Suite ... Almost too much. I sometimes program this and some of his major works, such as Tallis, Dives and Lazarus and The Lark Ascending (when I have some time to spare!): it's a big 'wow' factor. VW's music is unashamedly beautiful, capturing the sweetest folk elements and conjuring up the spirit of the wildest and most remote parts of Britain (in my head at least). This music is something else and I can't recommend it highly enough.

A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

I wish I was Swedish.......2006-06-10

This is simply my favorite disc of song out there. As a recreational singer, it's wonderful to come across a disc like this and be given an entire new world of song that you can't even find music for. The songs by Sigurd von Koch, who spent some time in Asia, are beautiful enough to dissolve your brain! In The Month Of Tjaitra and Of Lotus Scent And Moonlight are so full of beautiful imagery and wonderful music I can't see why people sing anything else. And the folk-inspired Pertersen-Berger songs are loads of fun too, although of course not as moving.

A feeling of discovery.......2000-09-23

The songs on this wonderful Swedish anthology may not be familiar to most listeners but they occupy an idiom not so dissimilar to the world of Grieg. (Otter and Forsberg's Grieg recital from a few years earlier is also indispensible.). The nostalgia-tinged melancholy (or is it wistful joy?) of Wilhelm Peterson-Berger's folk-inspired songs, for example, convey a hint of Grieg's art yet are distinctively Swedish. There are nine selections by Peterson-Berger, out of 31 total, and they all exemplify this composer in full melodic flower. The other composers offer something closer to what we think of as art songs: somewhat rarefied, reserved, melodically rich and often evocative. The piano accompaniments are always first rate. This treasury provides a rich and varied 74-minute overview of Swedish song.

If the quality of the Swedish literature as a whole is half as good as what's presented here, let's hope that this is only an introduction from Otter and Forsberg, who would seem to have this repertoire to themselves although one could not hope for more understanding interpreters. After all, they are Swedish! All of imagination of their earlier Grieg interpretations is present here as well. There is all the necessary depth of characterization without affected artsiness.

If that's not enough, this disc also won the coveted Gramophone Award.

A good addition to "Beethoven For Relaxation".......2004-01-17

Whenever I listen to this CD, I always find it enjoyable. Good for background music as well as easy listening. There's another CD like it called "Beethoven For Relaxation" (BMG 09026-63328-2) I compared the performances of a few pieces on both CDs. I prefer hearing the "Moonlight," and "Fur Elise" on "Adagio Beethoven," but as for the Romance#2 for Violin and Orchestra, I prefer "Beethoven For Relaxation." I think you might as well get BOTH CDs.

Jackie Linge and Ian Stynes started The Glaciers three years ago while they were playing with several bands at the time, including The Mendoza Line. Ian ran a studio out of the basement of their home in Queens, and soon enough the couple, who will be married in June 2006, started working on their own material in the damp mess of instruments and mangled stuffed animals. What started as a simple experiment later turned into a multi-layered and textured sound, as friends came and went and added their instruments and melodies to multiple tracks. The songs began to capture a time and a place of candlelit porches and late night sing-alongs, culminating onto magnetized tape. Built on the morals of melodies and retracing of regrets, the collection of songs merge together in an intimate collection of music and compatriots. The music centers around Jackie's vocals (which have been compared to Cat Power and Beth Orton) and includes the usual suspects of drums, electric guitars and keyboards. For the recording of “The Moonlight Never Misses an Appointment”, Ian and Jackie enlisted a number of guest musicians, incorporating a rotating collage of new instruments and musical styles. Joining them on the pedal steel guitar is Bob Hoffnar (Hem, Mojave 3, Rainer Maria, The Mendoza Line) and Gerald Menke (Mercury Rev, Babe The Blue Ox). Playing the cello is Linnea Weiss, and on the trumpet is Nate Wooley (Trevor Dunn/Mr.Bungle). Julia Rhydholm (Essex Green, Ladybug Transistor) handles the low end, rounding out the all-star lineup. For fans of the The Mendoza Line, Cat Power, Beth Orton and Ida.

Lush folk rock with chamber music flourishes.......2006-09-14

An interesting album with some first class arrangements. It's evidently their first, but the members of The Glaciers sound too good for this to be their only recording experience. Horns, strings, pedal steel, with lush arrangements and no producer? This is a sound most bands can't achieve without a major label and a few albums under their belt. What's going on here?

On their best songs, The Glaciers have come up with something pretty unique. I don't know what to call it other than perhaps "chamber folk": folk-styled songs combined with a string quartet and horns. It's a very interesting sound, accessible but also elegant; like Lucinda Williams filtered through Penguin Café Orchestra.

For example, "Habit to Break" leads with strings pulsing over an acoustic guitar rhythm. I like the formality and elegance of the quartet contrasted against the guitar, the simple melody, and Jackie Linge's singing. She has a sweet voice--genuine and untainted by anything resembling a fake southern accent. Pedal steel at the chorus gives the song a solid Gram Parsons country rock vibe. The songs "To Be One," "Mobile Homes," and "Railroads" each use this approach or some variation to good effect.

I hesitate to pinpoint the album strictly as folk because Moonlight Never Misses an Appointment has an eclectic side to it. The Glaciers mix a variety of styles including pop, rock, jazz, and ambient sounds. One example: "Kidney Stone" adopts an unusual approach similar to the experimental group INSTITUT FUER FEINMOTORIK, using the crackling pop of an old LP runoff groove to provide the rhythm track for the song. It's such a naturally interesting rhythm it's a wonder that other bands haven't tried this cool little trick. This song runs a smooth hypnotic groove, with pedal steel, masculine harmonies, shimmering guitar, and an intimate trumpet solo. I really like the personal feel of this song. You can hear Jackie Linge talking off-mic during the solo. It's a great song that reminds me a bit of the old American Music Club sound. Definitely a standout. Download it, find it, listen to it.

"Hat's Off" is another standout song. It starts with a string overture then moves into a Tori Amos-like lament. At first it fooled me into thinking it was just another girl singer confessional. But what "Hat's Off" really wants to be is a languorous rock ballad with a vintage refrain reminiscent of The Left Banke or Faces. The song reveals its true nature during its long conclusion with a fadeout just spilling over with cascading instruments. It's so sweetly retro that one expects to hear a turntable stylus lift at the end of the song and the tonearm returning to its cradle before shutting off. (Come to think of it, I don't think INSTITUT FUER FEINMOTORIK has used that particular trick yet, so there's an idea). Anyway, I love this song.

If there's a weak spot, the album is padded with a few safe sounding pop songs that seem like they've been sitting on the shelf a little too long. "World on Fire" "Mono Highway" and "Lucky Me" have a 80s quality--akin to The Bangles. To my thinking, "Mono Highway" would be better as a slower noir song like Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" instead of the happy-chorus/sing-along/hand-claps number it is. Still, it's hard to complain about these few songs all too much because the Grade-A production of the album makes even Grade-Z material palatable.

Overall, The Moonlight Never Misses an Appointment has a great sound and four or so standout songs. It's a shame Amazon doesn't have an album cover or song clips for the album. Quite a nuisance actually. I happened to hear a few of their songs on college radio before getting the record. Anyway among the releases of 2006 that I've listened to, this is among the better ones. (If you're curious, it ranks better on my list than the latest album by the Fiery Furnaces, Golden Smog, Islands, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, or Spoon, but not quite up there with the latest by The Dresden Dolls, Ani Difranco, Regina Spektor, or Kimya Dawson).
