This is New Folk at its best. The CD has songs with heart and conscience. It is a kaleidoscope of joy, pathos, and stirring calls to action. Lovely melodies, down home instrumentation and gorgeous voices alternately solo and beautifully blending.

The Heirloom CD was my first introduction to the musical talent of Norman Evans. If you love the sound of Jazz that stimulates you physically and mentally, this is the CD for you. From the first composition "In your Name" to the last "Clouds (reprise), you know you are listening to an original and multitalented artist. My favorite piece "Rainy afternoon" will have you searching your soul for the part of you that feels the emotions this short, but intense, composition inspires. So, If you seek new, original jazz music Norman Evans' Heirloom will leave you wanting more.

Great sax work, great songs a cd that you will love........1999-09-26

I found Mr. Evans to be quite the composer, his sax work was also noteworthy. I like the uptempo stuff a great deal but the slow songs also are very good. This a a very good cd from a artist I think is going to turn a lot of heads. I can't wait to see him perform live. A very strong musicial performer.

A brilliant bluegrass band.......2002-06-23

This high-energy bluegrass band, at the time of this recording, was made up of two beautiful sisters (Jan and Jill) who sing like angels, plus Jan's husband David Harvey (previously a member, first of Hot Rize, then of the Lonesome Ramblers) and banjo player John Smith. For this recording, they were joined by fiddler Randy Howard.

The choice of songs is excellent. They are nearly all covers (indeed, I'm not sure if there are any originals at all), but the best known by far is Pass me by, a popular country song of the seventies, which Janie Fricke did an oustanding cover of in 1980 or 1981. The Wild and Blue version cannot match Janie's version - nobody ever will - but it is an excellent cover in it's own right.

Other covers (none very well known) include Red roses won't work now (first heard on Reba's Have I got a deal for you), Love is a lonesome river (written by Glen Campbell for his album By the time I get to Phoenix), Can't get you off of my mind, one of two tracks on which David sings lead (an obscure Hank Williams song which Patty Loveless covered on If my heart had windows) and Different train of thought, first recorded by Gail Davies in the mid-eighties. It is likely that a Mac Wiseman record was their source for It's goodbye and so long to you. I'm not only impressed by the quality of their music, but by their taste !!!!

Another cover is Before I'm fool enough, written by Allen Reynolds, possibly for Crystal Gayle, Don Williams or Kathy Mattea. I remember the song, but not who first recorded it.

The first track, Misery train, was written by Vince Gill, but it's not one of his famous songs.

So, an album full of covers, but anybody who remembers more than three or four from first time around is doing well. Even then, the high-energy bluegrass versions to be found here freshen them up.

Wild and blue were a truly brilliant band. Their music is bluegrass of the hightest quality. Jan and Jill are every bit as good as Claire, Rhonda and Alison. I hope they make another record some day.

Meanwhile, we can enjoy this album and Come inside and make yourelf at home, a similar type of album with even more obscure covers, including When someone wants to leave (from Dolly's Jolene album).
