Though he was only 22 when he died in 1959, and had a recording career that lasted but three years, Buddy Holly remains one of the most influential figures in rock & roll history. A great stylist as well as ingenious synthesist, Holly forged a sound that combined elements of R&B, country, and pop, but was distinctly his own. To wit: such eternal classics as "That'll Be the Day," "Not Fade Away," "Peggy Sue," "Words of Love," "It's So Easy," "Heartbeat," and "Well...All Right"--all included in this 20-song package. At the time of his tragic death, he was moving in still new directions, hinted here by "Reminiscing" (with King Curtis on sax) and the string-aided "True Love Ways." --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars THE ULTIMATE ROCK N' ROLL GOSPEL AND FINAL TESTAMENT OF THE LATE GREAT BUDDY HOLLY........2007-04-23

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece compilation album entitled "BUDDY HOLLY - FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES" by one of Rock's most all-time greatest artists ever. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Lubbock, Texas' pride and joy's, M-R.--B-U-D-D-Y--H-O-L-L-Y! "BUDDY HOLLY - FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES" was originally released in 1985 on Vinyl/LP, Cassette and Compact Disc on the MCA Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the legendary artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

BUDDY HOLLY and his original band THE CRICKETS, will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems. BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS will forever always be known the world over as being one of the mid-fifties few and early known Rock n' Roll foundation bands and early pioneers in giving Rock music its early stages and identity in all of Rock n' Roll history. When lead singer and guitarist CHARLES HARDIN HOLLEY A.K.A BUDDY HOLLY met and hooked up with his childhood friends Jerry Allison on drums, Joe B. Mauldin on bass and Niki Sullivan on rhythm guitar, Lubbock, Texas would give birth to BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS in 1956 resulting in forming a music dynasty that would forever change music and the future for Rock n' Roll. Many of HOLLY'S classic song anthems are still felt up to this very day and has never been forgotten. An example of this fact is that fellow contemporary artists such as Linda Ronstadt, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, John Lennon and Santana to name a few, have never forgotten HOLLY and have all paid tribute to HOLLY by recording some of the most incredible cover song versions of HOLLY'S most sacred song anthems ever thus resulting in adding more new life into the legend and legacy of BUDDY HOLLY. Beside the many classic Rock anthems that HOLLY wrote, HOLLY contributed, accomplished and achieved many goals in the recording studio as well. HOLLY, according to Rock n' Roll history and legend, is the first real truly completed accomplished artist in Rock n' Roll history. As his career was moving on strong, other than writing and composing, HOLLY would be the first artist to ever start producing, arranging and engineering his own music in the recording studio. Another fact is that BUDDY HOLLY and his band, THE CRICKETS, were the first white act to ever perform at Harlem, New York's famed Apollo Theater. In reality, BUDDY HOLLY was an extremely talented guitarist that was always curious how he could improve and better himself. In the short three years of BUDDY HOLLY'S career, his guitar playing only improved and got better with time. During those three years of HOLLY'S career, he would record and release some great albums that would contain some legendary hit single songs. Which brings me to the legendary album I'm about to review for you now. Despite having released several greatest hits compilation albums with the same satisfactory sound recordings after BUDDY HOLLY'S untimely death in 1959, this would result in inspiring MCA Records in being the first Record label to release a more improved polished compilation album of HOLLY'S greatest hits with a more truer and richer sound quality. "FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES" album would be the result. In my opinion, "FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES" is a great marked documented account as to what BUDDY HOLLY'S recording's would have sounded like had he lived up to 1985. "FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES" is without a doubt, a true testament of one of the greatest musical genius' in the twentieth century. This legendary masterpiece compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great accomplished artist, performer and leader of a great legendary band known as THE CRICKETS. With all of this in mind, BUDDY HOLLY was really truly indeed, very far ahead of his time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary masterpiece "FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES" album by BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS begins the early HOLLY Rocker "That'll Be The Day," the fast paced early Rocker "Oh, Boy!," the soulful HOLLY composition Rocker that was recorded by The Rolling Stones, "Not Fade Away," the fast and beautifully arranged early Rocker composed by HOLLY, "Tell Me How," the incredible sounding mild Rocker "Maybe Baby," the beautifully soft sounding song "Everyday," the blistering early Rocker "Rock Around With Ollie Vee," the unbelievable HOLLY composition Rocker recorded by Linda Ronstadt, "It's So Easy," HOLLY'S Rockin' song anthem "I'm Lookin' For Someone To Love," the forever HOLLY composition trademark Rocker "Peggy Sue," the ELVIS sounding Rocker "I'm Gonna Love You Too," one of the most beautiful love songs ever written that was also recorded by THE BEATLES, the HOLLY composition "Words of Love," the sizzlin' 50's Rocker "Rave On," the groundbreaking mellow acoustic Rocker co-written by HOLLY and recorded by SANTANA, "Well...All Right," the uplifting soft 50's song "Listen To Me," the slow energetic Rocker "Think It Over," the fantastic spanish latin styled acoustic song "Heartbeat," the smooth Rocker with King Curtis, "Reminiscing," the beautifully orchestrated and well arranged song which was composed by Paul Anka, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" and another one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, the HOLLY co-written song "True Love Ways." May I also add that HOLLY'S forever revolutionary and blistering guitar playing is sizzlin' red hot and is the real true stuff that is purely made of Rock legend. HOLLY'S band, THE CRICKETS also contributed extremely well in helping HOLLY'S musical visions come to life realistically resulting in taking the music to another level. HOLLY'S lead vocals were extremely rare and had a certain touch of adding feeling into all of his songs.

Overall, this is one great legendary BUDDY HOLLY compilation album worth seeking further research and information into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard BUDDY HOLLY fan, a devout music collector or a music historian. As to all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familar with the sound and music of BUDDY HOLLY or the music of the 1950's, this legendary album would be a great way to start your BUDDY HOLLY collection. However, there are many other BUDDY HOLLY greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into and check out before you make your decision as to which BUDDY HOLLY album(s) is right for you to purchase. Either way, you will have made the right choice in beginning your BUDDY HOLLY collection and listening to the early foundations by one of the very first pioneers in Rock n' Roll history. You can do all of your researches and buy as many of the BUDDY HOLLY albums that you want either through Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. When you purchase a BUDDY HOLLY album, you are listening to part of music history in the making.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. Without a doubt, this legendary masterpiece album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan, devout music collector or a music historian would want to be without.

In closing, 3 February 1959 will forever always be remembered as "THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED." When BUDDY HOLLY, RITCHIE VALENS and J.P. "THE BIG BOPPER" RICHARDSON died in that plane crash on that fateful cold and snowy winter day, alot of Rock n' Roll died with them. However, their music lives on and has never been forgotten to this very day resulting in keeping their legend's and legacies alive and fully intact. Contemporary artist DON McLEAN would pay the ultimate tribute to his fallen idols by recording the legendary song entitled "American Pie" in 1972. The 1978 movie "THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY" starring Gary Busey would only add more fuel to the HOLLY legend. BUDDY HOLLY would also receive the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as a member of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Lubbock, Texas has never forgotten about their once famous resident, the city donated a park and statute honoring in the name of CHARLES HARDIN HOLLEY A.K.A. BUDDY HOLLY. It is just too bad that HOLLY'S life and career was cut so short, no telling what he was capable of and what could have been done had he lived. With this in mind, BUDDY HOLLY has forever left his mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you late great Buddy, the late great Ritchie, the late great J.P., Jerry, Joe and Niki. Thanks for the great memories. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? BUDDY HOLLY LIVES! RITCHIE VALENS LIVES! J.P. "THE BIG BOPPER" RICHARDSON LIVES! Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. R.I.P. CHARLES HARDIN HOLLEY A.K.A. 5 out of 5 stars All in one.......2007-02-05

This is a cheap Buddy Holly CD but has all of the hits on it sounding as good as ever. If you are a die-hard Buddy Holly fan then you may want more than just this, but this has all that you need from Buddy Holly including most if not all of his hits and songs.

5 out of 5 stars This will do until the eagerly expected box set.......2005-11-28

Buddy is one of the first musicians I ever heard and I was lucky there as it could have been someone who didn't write his own timeless songs , have an extremely distinctive guitar style and create pictures in the listener's mind .

Buddy is a great communicator and he was very fortunate to have people with him who grasped where he as coming from with his ideas . Some of the songs are co-written .

Paul McCartney owns the publishing rights for Buddy's music , so you are helping Paul with a bit of extra cash too , if that matters .

Buy this for the kids as they will still be singing the songs 30 years later - it's like that all over this world .

We'll always be listening , Buddy .

3 out of 5 stars Drab presentation of his remastered classics.......2004-06-23

Let me state right off the bat that the sound quality of these remastered tunes is fabulous. The music of Buddy Holly has never sounded better to me. That being said I would defintely not recommend this one to collectors. To me the packaging is downright ugly and there are absolutely no liner notes included here. Most of his biggest and best are here but this compilation does not include "Early In The Morning" and one of my favorite Buddy Holly songs "Raining In My Heart". I'm only guessing but it looks like this might have been the first collection of Buddy Holly that featured remastered tracks. There are much better and more complete options out there now. I would skip this one altogether.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Boy!.......2004-06-11

Beside Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Elvis and Johnny Burnette Trio his was on of the most influential artists in rock 'n' roll. Here you can hear why. This is more than just a greatest hits and sound quality is great!

Pierce's ostentation (epitomized by his guitar-shaped swimming pool and silver dollar-encrusted Pontiac) has tended to obscure his achievement as the best-selling country artist of the '50s. His glorious, soaring off-key vocals, his courage in tackling taboos, and his emphasis on a driving honky-tonk beat make his recordings unfailingly listenable today. Songs like "Back Street Affair," "There Stands the Glass," "In the Jailhouse Now," "Honky-Tonk Song," and "I Ain't Never" are glorious. Pierce, though, shot himself in the foot by living long enough to make some very bad records, but here are 18 unalloyed beer hall classics in their never-bettered original versions. --Colin Escott

4 out of 5 stars This is country, down to the wire.......2004-09-25

Webb Pierce, like Lefty Frizzell, was one of the stars of the post-Hank Williams era. Though Frizzell is more famous, and arguably the better artist, Pierce's music stands high and mighty as well. A lot of the styles here echoe back to older genres like bluegrass and appalachian, but that's what makes it all the more enjoyable (you see what influenced a 1950s honky tonk singer).

Most of Pierce's hits, like "More & more", "There stands the glass" and "Wondering" are here. Also, he covered Jimmie Rodgers ("In the jailhouse now"), Moon Mullican ("Sparkling blue eyes" renamed "Sparkling brown eyes") and George Jones ("Why baby why"). A solid collection, but (unlike Hank Williams, Moon Mullican or Jimmie Rodgers collections, which also have appeal to non-country fans) one that requires a love of country music to enjoy. I myself love country music, and this is as pure as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars a must-have collection.......2004-01-16

Webb Pierce...WOW! i love his singing. no, i don't want to hear him sing at high volume...but his voice is distinct that's for sure. some have made or heard the comments that Webb is either under-rated or is forgotten. i have an answer for that. Webb lived a life that was opposite what one might think. He was NEVER a hell-raiser, despite his reputation for honky-tonk songs. The only time he raised cane was inside a studio or backstage at a concert if something didn't go as planned. He had his share of temper-flare up's but that like i said was a result of business and nothing personal. Also, he remained married to one woman for decades which is another rarity in country music. To top it all off, he remained honky-tonk and he remained decked out in rhinestones long after people stopped wearing them. He wasn't Porter Waggoner. Porter's the ONLY artist i've seen who the public insists seeing in Nudie suits (Nudie was the name of a designer). Another reason for his lack of durability lay within his commercial out-put. After 1965, he only had one single to make the Top-10 out of dozens of singles released to radio. This, coupled with his flashy lifestyle, didn't win him any friends in the post '60s Nashville caught up in Billy Sherrill's countrypolitan songs and Owen Bradley's nashville sound. This CD contains a boatload of Webb's important songs. All of them are here. The fact that 11 of his 13 #1 hits are here and a few lesser-known Top-10 hits and album tracks thrown in make this the best available single CD collection on Webb Pierce. "Love, Love, Love" and "That Heart Belongs to Me" are the #1 hits not on this CD. I would've added "Love, Love, Love" since it was a 13 week #1 hit and taken off "Broken Engagement", which is track 4, since it wasn't a hit. Well, the infectious "Sparkling Brown Eyes" is track #10. The Wilburn Brothers provide the harmony like they do on "In The Jailhouse Now". I also like the last three songs: "Honky Tonk Song", "Tupelo County Jail", and "I Ain't Never". Even though his honky-tonk fans dismiss them as rock-a-billy fluff, i enjoy them.

5 out of 5 stars How Welcome was this one???.......2003-09-13

Remember when this one hit the shelves? There was absolutely NO Webb Pierce available domestically. Of course Bear Family had their mammoth box set out at the time, which I do recommend, but there was nothing.

Then one day I found this at the record store and nearly caused a scene.

This includes a lot of his most well known songs. Not all of them, but most of them.

The booklet is fantastic looking and the sound is spectacular.

Another cornerstone of my record collection

4 out of 5 stars Close but no Cigar.......2002-06-17

This CD contains all the Webb Pierce classics when he was a true country star which is why I purchased it. It's too bad they didn't cut off about 5 songs in which he feebly attempted a crossover to country rock so to speak. If you want Webb at his country music best, pass this one by.

5 out of 5 stars There stands the glass- fill her up to the brim.......2002-04-04

Which country singer was the #1 country "singles" ie,(45's and 78's) seller of the 1950's. You got it-Webb Pierce. Webb and Ray Price and ET cut the best honky tonk country in the 1950's. Webb was pure honky tonk from his nasal twang to his custom made nudie's of hollywood suits. This cd is fantastic and includes some of his biggest hits-my favorite being "There stands the glass". If you wanna cry in your beer or feel like you're two steppin on a sawdust floor in a honky tonk circa 1958-then this cd will do it for ya. One of the all time great Country singers.

5 out of 5 stars Music for a party , among the first music I ever heard.......2005-11-22

It was through listening to Bill that I got the idea and understanding of what a rock and roll groove should be .
It was only later that I realised that Bill had his start in country or western swing bands . Both of these sorts of music show an honest simplicity that some people think shows a lack of ability .

They could not be more wrong .

The underlying constant clicking of the double bass strings driving the songs is still the sort of feeling any band that plays these songs cannot forget . It is a heartbeat and is connected to the feet .

These are songs for dancing and the fine remastering brings them to life again . The records sound exciting to begin with ,
due to the 'live' sound of the room in which they were recorded .

I feel unashamedly happy when listening to this compilation .
I hope others discover this man - he is as influential in his own way as Elvis .

4 out of 5 stars Bill Haley came along with a rockin' song........2005-07-07

Bill Haley deserves some credit for being the first white man to play rock and roll. But a lot of the guys who followed him, like Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, did it better. A lot of Haley's recording don't hold up that well today. Still, he was a pioneer, and some of his recordings do have charm. This is a collection of his tracks recorded between 1954 and 1956. There are some important tracks recorded before and after those dates that are missing, but this is a decent sampling of his work. Here is the track listing:

1. Rock Around the Clock (#1 hit)
2. Thirteen Women
3. Shake, Rattle and Roll (#7 hit)
4. A.B.C. Boogie
5. Happy Baby
6. Dim, Dim the Lights (#11 hit)

4 out of 5 stars Their Greatest Hits, Some Great Non-Hits, and a Few Misses.......2000-10-12

If you value the unique, harmonious, "Folk-Rock" sound that made the Association one of the best groups of their era, this album should be part of your collection. Their greatest hits are all here, along with many of the others that, while not hits in their own right, made listening to their albums a pleasure. The #1 pop song of 1966, "Cherish", is here, along with their debut hit, "Along Comes Mary". 1967 hits "Windy" and "Never My Love" are here too, along with "Goodbye Columbus", an upbeat movie title song from a largely-forgotten "The Graduate" clone, starring the dynamic Richard Benjamin. There are several beautiful tunes that never made it to the charts, including "Birthday Morning", "Rose Petals, Incense and a Kitten", and "No Fair At All". Other great songs of note include "One Too Many Mornings" (although the version on their "Live" album is better), the hit "Everything That Touches You", and the great selection from one of their later albums, "P.F. Sloan". The only negative aspects to this album are (1) A failure to present the music in chronological order, which I feel would have better showcased the growth and change the group made over time, and (2) Inclusion of a couple of songs that not only weren't hits, but don't seem to be particularly distinctive in any other sense, either. It's too bad that this great album had to end on a song ("Dreamer") that I don't recall seeing on any of their albums, and without anything special to recommend it. There were many other great songs performed by the group that would have been a better choice. The Association's music is timeless, and this is a great collection - I highly recommend it to those who share my enthusiasm for quality, melodic music!

      5 out of 5 stars 70s guitar giant.......2004-02-12

frank marino picked up where jimi hendrix left off, i say this very losely. there has been alot of comparison to hendrix but frank does have his own style and should not be labled a hendrix clone. this album if you want to buy one frank marino and mahogany rush album this is it. you get 3 lps 2 cds.from start to finish classic rock at its best. these came out in the early 70s and frank was only 16 or 17 on maxoom his first album. you listen to these cds and the sound is amazing, today much music is polished up and over produced. this is over 30 years old and it sounds so raw but yet so good. what all great music should sound like. after hearing these albums im sure you will be like me and by all the rest. frank marino is a musicains musician and he plays for the people. he is an overlooked and forgoten guitar legend. hear the music feel the music and judge for yourself. frank marino is a true living legend.

5 out of 5 stars Another Gem from Canada........2004-01-11

A compilation of the first 3 albums. Frank Marino is a superb guitar player and the music is good. This is what its all about.

5 out of 5 stars a fan since the mid-1970s.......2003-08-01

Maxoom never impressed me BUT "Child of the Novelty" and "Strange Universe" impress me (and still do). Frank is a phenominal guitar player. I have also seen him in person in concert on only three occasions (drat!). If you love an absolutely searing screaming rock-and-roll, Jimi Hendrix-type, lead guitar then buy this now. However, Frank plays Jimi better than Jimi played Jimi. Purists will hate me for saying that. Of course, all of the tunes on these recordings are Frank's compositions. IMHO, his best albums are:
      - "Child of the Novelty",
      - "Strange Universe",
      - "Mahogany Rush IV",
      - "Mahogany Rush Live".
I have them all on vinyl and finding them on CD has been difficult.

4 out of 5 stars ...and the guitar gods made love..........2001-07-14

Just noticed the availability of this 3-album 2-CD set and, having been a fan of Mahogany Rush from their humble beginnings, I would first and foremost recommend this mainly for the acquisition of CHILD OF THE NOVELTY. This was the first MH album I ever heard and, along with MH IV ( <--their masterpiece), knocked me out with Frank's unbelievable guitar-playing and unabashed cloning of Hendrix's style of singing and playing. It would have been cool, if Jimi would have lived, to know what he thought of this great, underrated band. Tracks like "Look Outside" and "Changing" sound like they could have come right off the ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? album. I kept hoping for a chance to see this band perform live in concert, but never got that chance. Hopefully, the boys remain together today, in some incarnation, and will tour the clubs or casinos as other 70's bands have done. I agree with the assessments of other reviewers: if you have heard great things about MH, this would be the good primer for you. I was not overly impressed with MAXOOM...but then, it was their first album and the guys were just getting their chops down. CHILD, on the other hand, kicks booty from start to finish. Not a bad song on the whole album. STRANGE UNIVERSE showed their inevitable growth, but overall didn't turn my crank as strongly as CHILD (with the exception of the sheer majesty of its title track).

If this 2-CD collection impresses you, then fasten your seat belt and latch on to a copy of MH IV, their 4th album and, IMO, their equivalent of a Sgt. Pepper album.
