If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. It's lovely. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
Captured in stelar HDCD sound, the Dead's previously unreleased historic New Year's Eve '76 show at the Cow Palace shines on 3CDs loaded with peak-form versions of many of the band's best-know masterpieces.Customer Reviews:

Beautiful ending for 1976.......2007-05-29
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.
The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.
1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.
The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.
Post scriptum:
I still can't find the reason for all that detraction against Donna Jean. Go on and loathe her while I enjoy her voice, I don't care.
Welcome new release from the Dead archive.......2007-05-20
"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.
I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.
Love it.......2007-05-19
We love it around here.I think its well worth the money spent.

If you're looking for something out of the ordinary for the season, The Lost Christmas Eve is for you. This final entry in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's rock opera trilogy is perhaps their most ambitious and complex in the series. Like its predecessors, The Lost Christmas Eve tells the story of heaven's youngest angel called back to earth to continue Jesus' unfinished work. This time he lands in New York City to help redeem not only Christmas, but the soul of humankind itself with a story line that rivals anything Frank Capra ever dreamt up for the big screen. Conceived and composed by Aerosmith and Savatage producer Paul O'Neill, most of the song were penned O'Neill, Robert Kinkle, and Savatage founder and keyboardist Jon Oliva, and features the rest of the seminal Florida metal band on the record. While not as bombastic as Savatage's fourteen rock epics which touch on topics as diverse as the Russian Revolution, the 15th century explorer Ferdinand Magellan's descendants, and Beethoven's last night, the record still has a grandiose, almost over-arching baroque feel, with its prog-rock organ swells and electronic alchemy. The best moments are during the soaring instrumentals, on tracks like the "Wisdom of Snow," "Wish Litz," "Christmas Bells, Carousels & Time," and the majestic rendering of "O Come All Ye Faithful." --Jaan UhelszkiAlbum Description

Is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve and Other Stories a holiday rock opera? Or perhaps just a holiday prog-rock disc? Or maybe it's New Age? Whatever the case may be, this isn't your typical Christmas album. Filled with electric guitar solos, plenty of synthesized keyboards, a children's choir, and lively drumming, Christmas Eve can only be compared to one other record, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other holiday disc, The Christmas Attic. On this CD, angelic vocal solos (on numbers such as "The Prince of Peace") are interspersed with driving instrumentals. Sentimental, occasionally bombastic, but as high-concept as holiday albums can be. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Remember the days when every band from Bon Jovi to the Fixx embraced keyboards like a long-lost lover? Whether you consider rock's tickling of the electronic ivories the good ol' days or the devil's spawn will determine how much you are going to like a good part of Eve 6's Horrorscope. Once again, the band enlists producer Don Gilmore, who expands the group's sound with dense, unsustained vocals; basic Van Halen riffs ("On the Roof Again," "Amphetamines"); and a rhythmic urgency that resurrects images of '80s group the Call ("Rescue," "Promise"). Eve 6 recorded their debut barely after the ink had dried on their high school diplomas. There's little doubt that the talented young trio holds tremendous promise (the band members can write head-bobbing hooks blindfolded), but in terms of fresh songwriting creativity, Horrorscope falls short of the efforts of similarly precocious contemporaries such as Ash and Supergrass. This is largely Gilmore's album, and when Eve 6 find the confidence to toss aside the studio-trickery crutch and the pop-metal security blanket, they should grow into a formidable rock band. --Beth MassaCustomer Reviews:

The album has some other notable songs, for the rock sounds but not the lyrics in which the band lacked depth or experience. Song's like 'Rescue', 'Enemy' and 'Nightmare' had some good guitar and keyboard riffs. The vocals were done well and overall the album was a winner, the only think lacking was good lyrics to go with the songs.

A California trio signed to a major label straight out of high school, Eve 6 plays the most potent brand of punk-pop this side of Green Day. The group's self-titled debut is an engaging mix of Jon Siebels's snarling guitars, Tony Fagenson's thundering drums, and bassist Max Collins's emphatic vocals and surprisingly erudite lyrics. These guys may have blown off their SATs to take a crack at rock stardom, but there's nothing lacking in their verbal skills on the hit singles "Inside Out" and "Leech." Hopefully, their math is good, too, so they can count the royalty checks from this short (it clocks in at under 40 minutes, rare in these days of overlong CDs), sharp rock gem. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

Grieg's 66 Lyric Pieces range from simple pretty tunes like the early "Arietta" that opens this disc to more extended pieces like the dashing "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" to impressionistic miniature tone poems like the late "Summer Evening." Here, Andsnes plays 24 of them, well-chosen to cover a representative selection from the complete sets. He plays them beautifully, with a lovely tone, virtuoso polish when such is called for, as in the express ride of "March of the Trolls," and poetic depth of feeling, as in "The Brook," where in his interpretation you can almost smell the grass and see the light ripples of the water. Gilels's selection on DG, with minimum overlap, is still unmatched, but Andsnes's well-recorded recital is a source of endless pleasures. Of added interest, the recording was made at Grieg's home, now a museum, on his 1892 Steinway. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Andsnes the piano man.......2007-01-08
Sensitive modern pianism.......2006-01-19
Yet, while a catalog with Horowitz' Scarlatti, Gould's Bach, Kempff Schubert, Bolet's Liszt, Pollini's Chopin, Michelangeli's Schumann, Gieseking's Debussy, Schnabel's Beethoven, Casadesus' Ravel, Seeman's Mozart and Backhaus' Brahms has set historic standards that are hard to equal or surpass, a cd of standard regularly performed repertoire like this one refutes any fear that we have reached the day that the music died.
For starters, piano technique has significantly improved over the last 25 years. Likely due to the standards that the aforementioned pianists set, the next generation is of superior dexterity. While I grew up in times that Horowitz' performances of Liszt, his own Carmen Fantasy and Stars and Stripes transcriptions, and Gould's highly articulate light speed Bach were considered supernatural phenomena, these times are long past. And although the former's sense of tone and the latter's feel for counterpoint may not yet have found their match, most participants in any of the endless number of competitions have basic skills that are just as high and in many cases repertoires that are much wider.
Before coming to the review of this disc, one more personal side note. Since the piano is an instrument that anyone with two functional hands can master to such a degree that quite a number of masterpieces in the repertoire are within reach, I expect recordings to reflect technical mastery. As such, I do not belong to the group of those pianophiles who consider Fischer's Bach "acceptable", Cortot's Chopin "monumental" and Horowitz "live in Moscow" version of his standard Scriabin etude "earth shattering".
Thus we come to the present disc, which I consider a prime example of contemporary pianism. Playing on Grieg's own euphonic, but decidedly mellow piano, in the composer's own "piano room" that imposes significant sonic limitations on the resulting recording quality, his fellow country man Leif Ove Andsnes revisits his juxtaposition of the modern and the authentic that we encountered earlier in his superior Haydn piano concerto disc. While the orchestral part in that recording had clear "authentic" traits, the piano and its performance were truly 21st century. Especially in the light of earlier performances of these Grieg pieces by the likes of Gilels and Gavrilov, Andsnes approach is more restrained and, based on credible historic documentation that comes to use by oral history, less authentically romantic.
Is there something like "the importance of being authentic"? Based on the movement that initially tried to ban all professional musicians from performing baroque music, there certainly is. Nobody will argue that it is of importance to have a good understanding of the performance practices of a particular era. Yet, the mere fact that Bach is still performed worldwide more than 2.5 centuries after his death clearly refutes the notion that his music could only be appreciated within a certain set of parameters. Leaving aside the great dichotomy between the fervor with which the "authentics" have defended "the rules" and the clarity and precision with which they were committed to paper centuries ago, there is no convincing argument that a contemporary should not be able to enjoy Gould's Bach on the piano over Leonhardt's "authentic" performances on the harpsichord.
Released of the shackles of authenticity, aware of the historical record, and fluent in Grieg's lingo from early childhood Andsnes has made a both highly sensitive and textually very accurate reading of the Norwegian's small scale character pieces. Helped by a technique, that is at least as good as all of the luminaries that I mentioned in the second paragraph, this recording shows the virtues of the "less is more" approach. Previous reviewers have harped on the Gilels comparison. While I admire the late Russian lion's performances, I greatly prefer Andsness. Although, Gilels could play fast and slow, soft and loud I considered his technique often of the lazy kind. Especially when it came to use of the sustain pedal he often chose to correct with his right foot, that what he preferred his hands/fingers to save energy on. While some consider this over-pedaling to be an essential part of the romantic mysticism, I am glad that the new generation of pianists does no longer need it to suggest fluency.
Limiting the use of the right pedal often leads to a much better characterization of a composer's sonic signature and this recording is no exception. While it is clear that Grieg was aware of contemporaries like Schumann, Brahms, Chopin and Liszt, Andsnes like no other "nails" the Norwegian's own distinctive voice. What results is a restrained, yet highly sensitive and intimate reading. While the room limits the clarity in the louder passages, it does provide a historically correct context for these lyric pieces.
Andsnes, without a doubt, is one of the stars of the next generation. While mediocre clowns like Lang Lang may entertain the circus crowds, it is comforting to know that musicians like the young Norwegian will keep the eternal flame alive and are likely to add chapters to an as of yet never ending history.
Suspicious Reviewer.......2005-10-19
By the way, I can't help questioning the intention of one of the reviewers named Dag Johansen. He is proactively reviewing most of Andsnes' CDs and giving them very poor rating. In fact, all he is reviewing are Andsnes', no other.
I don't mind that if it is truly his honest opinion but there's something fishy here... why does he keep buying Andsnes' CDs if he hates his playing so much? It's as if he is trying to damage the artist's reputation... Shady....
I have not actully heard this CD or any of Andsnes'. Just felt I needed to report on this.

The Fallen Angel, and yet the brightest star.......2005-12-27
Now that I have gotten the bad out of the way, I can focus on all of the good things I have to say about the first six tracks of the album. The opener, Lucifer, has a simply amazing introduction (with all the beeping and stuff), and the other four minutes of the song are excellent as well. Lucifer is, quite simply, not only the best instrumental by Parsons by far, but also the best instrumental I have ever heard (and a great juggling song, for that matter). You Lie Down with Dogs is one of the first Parsons songs I was familiar with, and helped me to start becoming interested in Alan Parsons over the biting satire of Tom Lehrer. I'd Rather be a Man is a very good song, and the last line takes me back to I Robot, my favorite Parsons album. You Won't Be There is another good song. Winding Me Up has a clever introduction, but doesn't live up to the introduction afterwords. Still, it's not called living UP for nothing, and Winding Me Up is a good song. Damned if I Do is an absolute masterpiece, and easily makes it into my top ten list for Parsons songs (instrumentals not included, or Lucifer would be there, too)
Unfortunately, after this point, the CD gets worse. Don't Hold Back is the only Alan Parsons song that I have ever given a one star (not including the time I listened to the first ten seconds of the 36 Parsons songs I had and gave half of them only one star). It is absolutely horrendous. If the music were changed, and the concept was changed to Don't Hold ME Back, it would fit on the album and would be a song that could get a rating as high as four stars. However, it does not fit on the album, the music is bad, the lyrics are bad, and it definitely is not worthy of more than one star.
Secret Garden looks really good coming after Don't Hold Back, but is still a very weak three star instrumental.
Before writing this review, I have been unable to rate If I Could Change Your Mind as I was unable to force myself to suffer throught the whole song. At least ten times, I got one minute into the song and then realized that I owned 153 songs that I would rate as four stars or higher (Lucifer, You Lie Down With Dogs, I'd Rather be a Man, You Won't Be There, and Damned If I Do all from this CD), and that my time would be much better spent listening to them. I finally forced myself to listen to the whole song while I edited this review, and I would have to give it weak two stars. It isn't as bad as Don't Hold Back, but it isn't very good either.
Now that I have bashed two of the songs on the CD and criticized a third without having a good thing to say, it seems necessary that I make it clear that this is a great album, and is worth the cost if just for Lucifer and Damned if I Do.

Puccini Withour Words.......2007-07-11
Wonderful! I don't care much for opera, but the music is great!.......2007-05-11
Here you go. Get the music without the vocals.
Puccini's musical prowess was amazing. Madama Butterfuly is some of the most intricately composed classical I have ever heard. The vocals don't let you hear the true genius of the composition. La Boheme is equally enjoyable; delicately intertwined harmonies that relax and arrest you at the same time. Tosca is strong; again, truly enjoyable.
But, for me, the best piece on the album is the opener; "O Mio Babbino" from Gianni Schicchi. I must admit that I have never heard of this opera or this composition, but when I played this CD, this song came alive for me.
The entire album is mixed well, with very little background noise and very good sound editing. Considering the price, you really can't go wrong with this album.
A definite positive addition to my classical library.

The arrival of Eve 6's third album was preceded by the curious news that frontman Max Collins had been cited for indecent exposure charges after he allegedly wandered into a hotel lobby in Pittsburgh naked except for some strategically placed shaving cream. It seemed like an ominous sign: After inking a major label deal straight out of high school, becoming Top 40 stars with its self-titled 1998 debut, and relentlessly touring its sophomore album, 2000's Horrorscope, was the Los Angeles rock trio on the verge of a meltdown? Luckily, It's All In Your Head reveals the band that is very much on top of things, from the thick and creamy guitars on songs such as the spiky "Still Here Waiting" to the potent relationship drama "Think Twice" and the scratchy last-night-on-earth melody that whips through "Not Gonna Be Alone Tonight.," all carried off in a vibrant Foo Fighters/Jimmy Eat World-style. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

Dissapointment after almost 7 years of fandom .......2006-03-02
Good lives
Bring the night on
Think twice
At least we're dreaming
Unfortunetly...the rest of the album sucks.

"Okay I'm boring you I'm warning you tonight
It's not the night for fights, lies, white or otherwise"
And believe me, the energy when they perform it live will blow you away. And they were just opening. I wish they were the headliner that night!
It's less poppy than Horrorscope, more refined than their self titled debut, and deeper than anything I've seen from them yet, not to say that their other CD's weren't as good in their own ways.
I haven't had anybody tell me they didn't like this CD yet; everybody I play it for loves it. You won't be sorry.
