About the Artist
As an integral member of the Isley Brothers and Isley/Jasper/Isley, and as a successful solo artist, Chris Jasper has been at the forefront of progressive R&B music since the early 1970’s. His professional career began in 1973, when the original Isley Brothers vocal trio expanded to include younger brothers, Ernie and Marvin, and brother-in-law, Chris, to create the musical component of the newly-created, self-contained group, the "Isley Brothers".

The Isley Brothers made their vinyl debut that same year with the groundbreaking "3&3" album, followed by a series of modern R&B classics such as "Who’s That Lady," "Fight the Power," "Live it Up," and "For the Love of You." Chris Jasper was the key instrumentalist, arranger and songwriter on all of the Isley Brothers material, including the gold and platinum albums "Showdown"," "Go all the Way," and "The Heat is On." In January 1992, Chris Jasper was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for his accomplishments over the 13 years he was with the group, with 11 gold and 4 platinum albums to his credit.

In 1984, the Isley Brothers split up and Chris, Marvin and Ernie formed Isley/Jasper/Isley. Chris, the lead vocalist on most of IJI’s recordings, was responsible for the majority of the writing and production for the new group. The trio released three high-quality albums on the CBS Associated label, including "Caravan of Love", which featured the #1 out-of-the-box title hit, written and sung by Chris and subsequently covered by English recording group, the Housemartins, who made "Caravan" an international #1 pop hit. "Caravan Of Love" has also been used in the Dodge Caravan commercials. Caravan of love ‘ was also recorded by Marvin Sap (appears on the WoW 2000 gospel album).

In January 1988, IJI disbanded and Chris Jasper went solo, forming his own independent record label, Gold City Records. In the short time following, Chris released two-high quality albums on the Gold City/CBS label, entirely written, produced arranged and performed by Chris. His first solo project, entitled "SuperBad", featured the #1 out-of-the-box hit.

Chris has also produced, performed and written music for other artists, including Liz Hogue’s debut album entitled "Vicious & Fresh" for the Gold City/CBS label; and "Make It Last" for Chaka Khan’s "CK" album. Albums produced by Chris Jasper and released and distributed independently by Gold City Records include Praise The Eternal (Chris Jasper); Out Front (Out Front); Deep Inside (Chris Jasper) and Brotha 2 Brotha (Brothaz By Choice)

In recent years, major recording artists have covered many of the songs primarily co-written by Chris Jasper, including Aaliyah ("At Your Best You’re Love"); Whitney Houston ("For The Love Of You"); and The Doobie Brothers ("Need A Little Taste Of Love"). In addition, his songs have been used as the primary foundation for releases by both new and established Rap and R&B artists, including Slick Rick ("For The Love Of You"); Da Brat ("Between The Sheets"); Black Sheep ("Highways Of My Life"); Rob Base ("Between The Sheets"); Big E. Small ("Between The Sheets"); Remy Salaam ("Between The Sheets"); Boss ("Ain’t I Been Good To You"); Keith Murray ("Between The Sheets"); Bone Thugs ‘N’ Harmony (Make Me Say It Again Girl); Will Smith (Here We Go Again); Queen Latifah (Make Me Say It Again Girl); Ice Tea (Footsteps in the Dark); Usher (Footsteps In The Dark); 702 ("For The Love Of You") and many more.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Greatest Hits Record.......2007-07-24

I have been a huge Social Distortion fan since 1988. I remember hearing "Prison Bound" when I was skateboarding a lot. My first Social Distortion show was in 1990 on the self-titled tour. I remember hearing "Ball and Chain" and "Sick Boy" live and it was the most awesome thing ever. The energy at the show was amazing. I have seen them many times since then and through many line-up changes. One thing stays the same and that is that Social Distortion is the greatest band of modern times. Mike Ness always impresses me with his lyrics and signature sound. This greatest hits record is really cool and I appreciate the re-recorded sound. It is very tastefully done and anyone who loves Social Distortion will gladly welcome this as an addition to their collection. I can't wait to hear the new record when it comes out and to catch another fantastic Social Distortion show.

5 out of 5 stars Give Mike a Break!.......2007-07-09

Of course if you are a longtime fan you might now want this, as it is largely a reprise. (Thus the title: Greatest Hits.) I, as a fanatic, am looking forward to checking out some of the re-recorded songs and love "Far Behind." Obviously if you are looking for new material, this isn't the place to go! Come on, guys. It looks like a pretty competent greatest hits collection to me. If you want B-tracks, etc., buy the damn original albums like the rest of us! Mike--you are one of the greatest songwriters of our era, and I can't wait for the new album!

4 out of 5 stars Only one disc?.......2007-07-02

Considering that I have been enamored with Social Distortion since I was eight years old, my review may be on the biased side, but the major quips I have with this collection are that A. It's only one disc: Granted not every Social Distortion song can be called a hit, they have more than 11 tracks to consider great. B. Not all the old songs are remastered: The two tracks I'm really talking about are 'Another State of Mind' and 'Prison Bound'. If you've been lucky enough to see or hear one of their latest shows, they start off 'Prison Bound' with a beautiful piano melody, which would have been fantastic to hear in a studio form, and 'Another State of Mind' with the new dynamic duo of Ness and Wickersham would have been something for the ages. I am pleased to hear the White Light, White Heat, White Trash songs redone, but they didn't require too much reworking because of the album's sheer perfection on its release eleven years ago.

So for those just getting into Social Distortion, or the people like me who will buy just about anything they do regardless of how it's reviewed, give this a try, but don't spend too much on it or expect monumental difference in songs. Hopefully it won't be another eight years before another album hits the shelves.

4 out of 5 stars Worth a purchase even for the hardcore fans..........2007-07-01

When I first learned that Social Distortion would be releasing a "greatest hits" album, I wasn't too excited about it. Of course, I have all the albums already and I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of paying $14 to get the one new song in an album of repackaged hits. I was also a bit put off by the fact that this album would only contain 11 songs. That is pretty thin for a "greatest hits" album. Still, since I can't get enough of Social Distortion and I'm a shameless completist, I knew I'd end up forking over the cash.

Let's just say that I was surprised when I first listened to this CD. As has been speculated on by Social Distortion fans for some time now, all of the songs from the major label era albums (tracks 4-9) have been given a major facelift.

This is where things get interesting. As of now, the band has not officially commented on this situation and the liner notes are no help either. Some fans are convinced that these tracks are merely remastered. Others think that the original songs have been re-mixed. Still, more think that what's on this CD is demo versions of the Sony era classics. Others think that the songs have been completely re-recorded.

I can't say that I'm an expert on mastering, mixing, or recording, but all I needed to hear was the first 5 seconds of "I Was Wrong" to realize that these songs are basically totally different. To me, the vocals and guitars sound totally different on all of the songs.

Personally, I don't buy the notion that these songs have only been "remastered". I own many remastered albums. I re-bought some of Bad Religions re-mastered releases in 2004. All of those songs sounded nearly identical to their original releases. The only difference in those releases is that they ended up much louder and crisper on the remastered discs. This is not the case with this CD. These songs have been altered and altered alot.

I'm sure some purists will be put off by the fact that the band has done this under the name of a greatest hits cd. Myself, I don't mind it one bit. It was a welcome surprise and actually made it worth me buying this cd. If I want to listen to the originals, I can pop those cd's in any time. This is a nice change of pace.

The new versions of the classic songs are interesting. I really can't call them better or worse than the originals. They are just different. I like both the originals and what's on this cd. Like I said, this is just a nice change of pace. Also, Far Behind is a great song. Classic Social Distortion.

So, I will say that this "greatest hits" album was worth the money in the end. In a perfect world, I would have preferred them to have released a b-sides/unreleased tracks cd. Social Distortion has a huge catalog of rarities that they've never released. That would have been better for the hardcore fans like myself, but I'll take what I can get. Maybe someday I'll get what I'm looking for (Mike Ness if you happen to read this: hint, hint). In the end, this will tide me over until they get around to releasing another new album. I'll just keep crossing my fingers and hoping that doesn't take nearly a decade like the last one.

If you're a hardcore SxDx fan or a newbie just looking to get aquainted with some of Social Distortion's music, you won't be disappointed with this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Re-recorded hits.......2007-06-28

Let me start off by saying Mike Ness (and whoever is in Social Distortion at any given moment) are an awesome band. Period. But, this 'greatest hits' cd is a disappointment. First off, all the Sony-era tracks are not included, instead we get re-recorded ones. Secondly, 11 songs? That's it? Plenty of room to add more hits (re-recorded or not). And thirdly, the liner notes are basically a cut and paste bio. No band credits, no production credits, nothing. Then to make matters worse, iTunes has a download of the old Chuck Berry song MAYBELLENE (which you have to buy the whole album on iTunes to get ) that would ahve easily fit on here. Kind of a shame.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

If you liked this bunch's self-titled debut, you will certainly dig the dozen raunchy tunes that populate Time Bomb. Wiry, wild Joshua Todd--a classic blues-belting, tattoo-bearing frontman--possesses a gift for irony that, while not easily gleaned, does exist. Behind him, guitars grind away, while big production by John Travis (Monster Magnet, Sugar Ray) helps create a believable street-grit feel that recalls early Guns N' Roses. The Sex Pistols-like "Place in the Sun" is a winner, as is the full-tilt "Frontside" and the suitably nasty "Porno Star." There are even a couple decent ballads! At its hard core, Time Bomb is that rare breed--an in-your-face, aggressive rock album that shows off a wonderful (and too rare) punk rock sensibility. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Time Bomb.......2007-03-28

Time Bomb-Buckcherry *****

If you heard the debut album then you know what to expect. With their hard rocking California style and their punk leanings Buckcherry have once again released an album that will please even the hardest of rock credicts. This was the bands second album before their nearly eight years hiatious causing phenomonal frontman Joshua Todd to persue a solo project which while promising was nothing compared to the power of Buckcherry. Keith Neilson laid low over the next couple of years until Buckcherry reformed in 2005 with all new members except Neilson and Todd for the album 15 (also recomended).

Partys, durgs, alcohol, getting laid, and living the rock n' roll lifestyle are the main subjects of this album. From the start of the album with 'Frontside' you can tell the band means buisness. It's a killer song with high energy, and great way to start the album. Next is the semi-hit single 'Ridin' which is one of the bands best songs and a concert favorite. A great party song! 'Time Bomb' the title track is exactly that...a bomb waiting to blow. In your face from start to finish and some great guitar work from Keith and Yogi. It's easy to see why this is the title track. 'Porno Star' is about what else..."big 'blank, mother blank porno stars." Great bluesy guitar playing here and some great vocals from Todd. 'Place In The Sun' is very Sex Pistols esq. It is done well but the song could have been better. 'Helpless' is a great song, very emotion and personal. Once again Todds vocals are at the top of his game. 'Underneath' is alright I do think the album would be alright with out it but it does make for a nice addition. 'Slit My Wrists' is killer, without a doubt one of the best songs the band has ever composed. Very high energy and yet laid back at the same time. 'Whiskey In The Morning' is one of the better songs on the album. It has a great bridge in the middle where everything slows down and Todds vocals get real high. The guitar playing is probably the best on the album. 'You' is so good it hurts. A bitter sweet love song with out of this world good lyrics. This really shows that the boys are more then just dirty gritty rock and roll songs. 'Slamin' is just everything Buckcherry is. Thats the best thing to say about it and really the only thing you can say about it. It maybe the best song one the album, at least the second best. 'Fall' is a great song that was released as a single but did not chart very well and it is hard to explain why because it is a great song. 'Open My Eyes' is a bonus track on the album and it goes without saying that it is the best song here. Just Joshua Todd, a piano, his voice, and the best lyrics he has ever written in his life and really some of the greatest lyrics ever written. This man is a genius. On a personal note this song helped me to purpose to my wife. This song is amazing and a brilliant way to end the album.

Surprsingly this album flopped. The record company Dreamworks folded right after the release of the which left no money for videos or any promotion of any kind making the album vertually unknown with the exception of the 'Ridin' video. So they decided to go their sepperate ways and only Todd and Neilson have done anything since then.

Time Bomb is an album that I would recomend to anyone who loves rock n' roll. If you heard the debut, 15, or even Joshua Todds solo work "You Made Me" then you will surly love this album as well. I am just glad that the band is back togther making great music once again because Buckcherry is truly the best band to come along in the last fifteen years.

5 out of 5 stars Vastly underrated band and album.......2007-03-21

The label needs to hurry up and get this album back into print, hopefully these guys are on the rise again. Timebomb is a solid sophomore effort for Buckcherry, I even prefer it to their first album. The highlights in my mind? Time Bomb and Porno Star both have great choruses, granted you don't buy the "clean" version I imagine. Slit My Wrists is great, and Whiskey in the Morning is just a good old fashioned rocker that I love about these guys. On the other hand, you can play Open My Eyes to get your girlfriend to shed a tear..lol.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have. Absolutely must!.......2007-01-28

There's just something about this band, and especially this album... it's powerful. Amazon really needs a sound sample of "Slit My Wrists" - THE best song on here, with strangely beautiful and melodic parts placed inside a fast, upbeat tune (despite the dark title). The band is generally raunchy but some lyrics are surprisingly deep and unbelievably intense. I wish I had gotten into this band sooner - they're amazing, and just get better as they go!

3 out of 5 stars Slamin' Rock 'N' Roll.......2006-02-13

If you love a band that has that great classic rock sound Buckcherry is the band for you. I got this cd the day it came out and I still listen to it to this day. If you ever get a chance to see them live you will understand what all the buzz is about.

4 out of 5 stars They Tried.......2005-09-20

You gotta hand it to 'em, they tried to bring the talent and the attitude back to Rock n Roll, but sadly thanks to deaf ears and corporate radio, it didn't add up to sales. Time Bomb was a killer follow-up to their debut, but much to my dismay, the wayward, "impress me today because you're so yesterday" fans they made w/ their first cd abandoned them. This cd did not disappoint in any way, it was just a dropped ball by the record co. , radio, and "fans". The good reviews it received on this site say it all. The "GnR Lite" reviewers are the people who only liked Buckcherry for the 'caine reference in Lit Up. How sad. Their new stuff will probably be just as killer as the S/T and T.B cd's , but unfortunatly, the whole vibe of the rock scene is still the same.

5 out of 5 stars Social Distortion is back ! .......2007-04-11

Social Distortion brings to the table a feel of rock, rebellion and good times, but have a way of bringing it about in a deep and meaningful way in this record. Clearly the ability and depth of the band is revealed in "Sex, Love and Rock `n' Roll"; this is not just a record to "make a buck" and this is evidenced through their remaining faithful to their roots (the hard edged quality to the lyrics and songs), yet their ability to evolve in the songs.

"Reach for the Sky" seems to be the catchiest of the tunes. It has "radio play" written all over it, but the song is addictive, kind of one of those songs that just comes at you with its guitar riffs at the beginning and its memorable lyrics: "Reach for the sky `cause tomorrow may never come." The song is all about carpe diem: living for today and taking advantage of things while you still have a chance. Who cares if it is a little mainstream? This is a signature Social D song with a moral: the kind of song you want to turn up.

Other notable songs on the disc are "Nickel and Dimes", another upbeat song with the signature sound of Social Distortion and "I Wasn't Born to Follow", the lyrics seem to embody the Social D persona: "When I grow up, gonna be a star. Gonna sing my songs and play my guitar, I'm ready." One of the my favorites is the last track, "Angel's Wings", which is a bit in between hard and soft rock, but seems to evoke feelings of not being stuck in one mode in life, but living life trusting in fate: "Angel's wing won't you carry me home." Another great song is "Winners and Losers", a song that seems to be about the good and bad in life and people, and how everything has its place but keeps pushing on.

Over all, this is just a great rock CD, one that you won't get sick of like so much other stuff out there. This is one of those CDs that gets better with age and begins to grow on you. It becomes somewhat of a habit after awhile. So, when you take a road trip, or are just hanging out with friends, be sure to pop in this one and crank it up!

4 out of 5 stars The Triumphant Return Of Social Distortion..........2007-03-30

"Sex Love & Rock n Roll" is the first studio album from Social Distortion in 8 years. Mike Ness had alot of material to work with when putting together this album. During the bands hiatus, Social Distortion lost guitar player Dennis Danell to a brain anuerism in 2000. Danell had been with the band from the beginning and, along with Ness, was the foundation that the band was built on.

Clearly, this album is a tribute to Dennis. Mike Ness has often said that he felt as though a piece of his youth died with Dennis. The resounding themes of this album is being a man, coping with loss, and dealing with love. These are subjects that are very easy to relate to.

For the most part, this album is classic social distortion. Anyone who saw them during their scattered shows during hiatus is probably very familiar with most of the songs on this album anyway as many of them had already become mainstays of their live set over the 5 years preceding this albums release. There are a few tracks, however, that are there basically just to fill up the album. Still, most of the songs are incredible. The highlights are...

-Reach For The Sky
-Highway 101
-Don't Take Me For Granted
-Footprints On My Ceiling
-Angel's Wings

5 out of 5 stars Dont take this CD for GRANTED.......2007-01-10

I was Somewhere Between Heaven & Hell(Kuwait)when I bought the latest Social D cd. I must have played this CD over 100x during my deployment.
After 100 times, I still listen to Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll
at least once a week. Mike Ness proves that Social D only gets better with time.

3 out of 5 stars Mike Ness needs to give it up!!!.......2006-10-03

I really liked Social D. at one time in my life until I recently seen them live a few weeks ago. I thought Mike Ness was nothing more than boring and down right ignorant. The rest of the band was good, but when the bands frontman can't do much, but say "this next song is about or is.". Give me a break. Mike Ness kept bashing people in Hollywood and politics. He seemed really immature and pointless. I think he really tried to be a tough guy that night. I seen Agnostic Front about a year ago and the frontman Roger Miret is straight up a tough guy just looking at him, but he didn't have to make a seen of himself. Actually he was really kewl with the crowd and appreiciated everyone unlike Mike Ness's fake a.. . Plain and simple Mike Ness is a fake, but maybe back in the day he wasn't until he became stuck on himself. Oh yeah, Roger Miret has more and even cooler tatts.

5 out of 5 stars Oh no... can I like it? Is it too mainstream? Will I still be all undergroundy and cool?.......2006-09-09

I DON'T CARE, if this is them "selling out" or "going pop" or even "becoming the wallflowers" (who I have personally never heard). I DON'T CARE about any of that, because I like the music. That's right, I HEAR the songs and I LIKE them and I don't really THINK about whether or not I'll still be a bonafide Hardcore (pronounced Hard [pause] CORE) kid.

Oh, and they used organs on mommy's little monster, so get over it.

In the opening seconds of this solo outing, former Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness peels off the line like a Chevy hotrod. Combining gritty punk attitude, honky-tonk toughness, and rockabilly swagger, Ness spins tales of depravity ("Crime Don't Pay," "Ballad of a Lonely Man") that would be downright depressing if they weren't so foot-tappingly catchy. A world-weary tough guy--equal parts Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Johnny Rotten--Ness is a true homegrown talent, combining his trademark growl and wire-taut guitar playing with dramatic, captivating storytelling. Appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Brian Setzer, and members of the Royal Crown Revue add to this record's already formidable mix, but Ness is really the star, proving at every turn that there can be life after punk without coming anywhere close to selling out. --Donovan Finn

5 out of 5 stars A great solo cd for Mike.......2007-01-25

I LOVE Social Distortion! I didnt think Mike Ness could have done it solo but I was wrong. This is a GREAT cd! If you love Social D, you will love this cd!

3 out of 5 stars MIKEY CONFESSIONS.......2007-01-03

Another musical face of Social Distortion leader, composer and front man. Sad, sometimes depressive and naturally filled with the rebel lyrics for which Ness feels so much passion and spiritual afecction. Only for Social Distortion fans...

3 out of 5 stars its not my thing..........2006-06-14

being a social distortion fanatic at one time, i picked this up at a used record store...now i knew it was going to be more country, jazzy, and classic rock-ish, but i was expecting something like "somewhere between heaven and hell" i suppose. i mean i respect mike ness' influences and his music, but this solo effort isnt my cup of tea...don't think twice is awesome though!...i would like to see him use this johnny cash/rockabilly inspired country to make some killer social distortion albums such as their early 90's albums...to me, this sounds very choppy much like the clash's sandinista.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Crap.......2005-10-03

I've never really heard too much of Social Distortion's music, but stumbled upon this album by way of Hank Williams III's message board so I'm quite partial to the cover of Hank Sr.'s You Win Again. This is quite possibly the perfect album. It seems to be the soundtrack to damn near everyone's life. It holds so many different emotions and moods in just 15 songs. You can't not love this album. It's just not possible.

My son (age 15) heard that Mr. Ness was an extremely decent singer/songwriter and this cowpunkbilly release was worth having a listen. He bought it on vacation this summer at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (! ) in Cleveland. It hasn't come out of his player since than. And I, as a second hand listener, have come under the spell. Highly recommended.

Sue Foley Deborah Coleman Roxanne Potvin `time bomb' Ruf Records

Sue Foley and Deborah Coleman come to this recording with deep credentials in the blues rock world, but Roxanne Potvin is not a name that I am very familiar with, but more about her later.

Often this recording is pleasing and at times very hot, especially on the NRBQ'ish rocking opening instrumental title track- Foley's `Time Bomb' which definitely races in true pedal to the metal fashion and just roars and soars! Foley's `So Far' is a rip roaring affair with a rockabilly tinge that is one of the finer compositions I heard from Foley in a while, and offers top notch blazing guitar rev-ups as Foley really wails on this track! But I could have done without her corny `Show Me' which really does not fit well with the rest of this CD. Coleman covers James Brown's `Talking Loud' in a Grateful Dead'ish `Shakedown Street' funky mode, complete with wah-wah effects, sassy background vocals, and is one of several fun tunes on this hip recording. The Coleman authored `Motor City' also utilizes soulful background vocals, and allows Deborah to do what she does best on her driving guitar, and the band also kicks in mightily especially the thumping bass of Jim Anton, and the strong B3 work of Mark Lickteig.
Potvin's `Get Up' is probably her best contribution here, but all due respect to Potvin, this CD could have easily been a Sue Foley meets Deborah Coleman recording, and does not need the third-wheel singer/songwriter/guitarist, as it would have been neat to have a couple of Coleman/Foley collaborations, especially instrumentally.
The albums closing track- Billy Davis' `In the Basement' made famous by Etta James is a riotous hoot, and allows all three ladies to sing a verse or two, and this tune is outstanding selection to round out this very neat recording.
`time Bomb' works very well at least half of the time, which by today's standards makes this CD a very nice recording to own. I would be remiss to leave out the fine production work of Kevin Bowe (best known for his work with Robben Ford, John Mayall, Etta James, Tommy Castro, Jonny Lang, and others,) and to the executive producers Thomas Ruf & Sue Foley, bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Respect.......2007-05-07

A must have for any real Social D and Mike Ness fan. It is a little different after being accustomed to Social Distortion albums, but listen to the music and don't focus on the genre. I'm a fan of many types of music, a huge fan of Johnny Cash, and I am always glad to see someone follow their heart instead of what is popular. "Under the Influences" is a testimony to those who came before us, so don't buy it expecting that Social D edge. Buy it because you want to hear some good classic songs sung by a legend.

5 out of 5 stars REAL STUFF.......2005-12-20

It's pretty bad when it takes a punk rocker to make a great country album. But that's exactly what happened and thank god it did.
"Let the jukebox keep on playing" is one of th ebest country cover songs of all time.
Keep up the good work Mike.

4 out of 5 stars this isn't regular social d.......2005-12-12

mike on his own rocks, but this has a huge "country" type feel to it, if you're not into johnny cash.. or willing to go beyond a punker boy sound.. this isn't for you. mike's voice still rocks, but the country feel might turn some fans off. for those that liked cheating at solitair this is a good bet. this would be a great addition/gift for anyone that likes country rock

5 out of 5 stars Old school country with an edge.......2005-11-29

Mike Ness' Under the influences is just that, true influences for every style of music. When I bought this cd the second thing I did was buy all of the origional material and it all blew my mind. Every song made to honor the origional artist. Remaking the likes of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and the Clash is a hard task for anyone, a task that should not be taken litely. This cd brings more than just good music it brings an added repect for the songs of the past, the songs that helped make the music of today. Overall a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars kickin country covered.......2005-11-24

Mike's done a great job of introducing some old school classics to a new generation of punks. Teaching them that not all country is bad. Forget the Garths & Shanias & give a listen to some true tales of hard luck & heartbreak. He's covered the man in black on a S.D. album so to hear this was a great boot in the ass. I also picked up another great CD of cover songs by Luke the drifter himself called Timeless, a tribute to Hank Williams that would fit in the player right along side this one.

Even if Social Distortion have lost some their edge on more recent studio releases, this new live set is solid proof that the band's musical urgency is still intact. Seventeen years of classic Orange County, California, punk is represented over 17 tracks, as the band moves through speaker-rattling alternative-radio hits like "Bad Luck," "Let It Be Me," and "Ball & Chain." Singer Mike Ness's rockabilly roar is in fine form, as is the grinding rock energy his bandmates put out. Recorded over three nights at Los Angeles's historic Roxy nightclub, the disc serves as a great testament to one of America's finest punk bands. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing To Being There..........2007-03-30

Social Distortion has always been known for its live show. This CD really is the next best thing to being there. Live albums usually are a very mixed bag; however, this one lives up to all of the expectations. The sound quality is amazing and the setlist is a nearly perfect selection of their live performances during that era (it should have included sick boy though). It is also notable because this is the last Social Distortion recording featuring Dennis Danell before his death.

The only thing that could have been done better on this album is that the tracks should have started at the beginning of the songs rather than beginning with Mike Ness's long speeches before each tune. Sometimes, it would be preferrable to just hear the songs without having to listen to or fast forward through Mike's views on the punk rock scene, the establishment, the "old days", or the government. Still, that really is the only complaint about this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great even for the casual Social D fan.......2007-01-05

I consider myself a casual fan of Social Distortion, and this disk is pretty good. The sound is good, and the energy is excellent. Even Mike Ness's cheesy commentaries between songs are worth listening to. I also bought this disk for musicians I know, because Social D, especially LIVE Social D, should be required listening for anyone performing music onstage.

Highlights, IMO, are Ball and Chain, Prison Bound, Ring of Fire, I Was Wrong. It's worth checking out whether you LOVE SD, are a casual fan, or never even heard their music before.

5 out of 5 stars live.......2005-10-29

1 hour ago just saw Social Distortion Live in Atlanta. People yelled all the way through the concert. Whoops and yells spilling out on the street after the concert. "Live" is the best word for this band when you see them in concert. "Live" for both girls and guys. All seemed to linger after the concert. Total adrenalin. Why see the Rolling Stones live when you can see the real deal?

Some things are totally fresh after 20 years. How is that possible? 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Transition album for Mike Ness.......2005-09-28

It's during Ball and Chain, more than Ring of Fire, where you can FEEL the Johnny Cash influence on Mike.
This a pretty important album to have and I spin this way more than any other SD's.
I always thought SD took awhile to find their identity, I wasn't a big fan of Mommy's Little Monster and prior (so I tend to skip some over some of those songs -I know that puts me in the minority) but once they did they didn't turn back (kinda like AFI).
Ball and Chain on this album will always rank as one of the greatest country/rock songs ever written and I know that's the direction Ness wants to continue in. I just hope he keeps uptempo guitar work because it's that constant balladry, well, and a few other things, that turns me off of most country. Check it out live - preferably with a bottle of JD. Really! You'll be feeling bittersweet once the crowd starts taken the 4th verse.

5 out of 5 stars Best Band in the USA.......2005-05-25

You can forget about the debate over who the best band in America is. It begins and ends with these guys. Although not the same Social D of the 80's and 90's, in part due to aging, retirments (Johnny, we need you back on bass man!) and largely to the tragic loss of Dennis Danell, these guys simply put on the greatest show, every time. I just saw them live in Poughkeepise NY (for like the 30th time since 1992), and that show was as powerful and rocking as that first time I saw them at the Sting in New Britain, CT (and like a young dum-ass, offered Mike and Dennis a beer in the parking lot before the show).

Thank you Mr. Ness, for taking time from you family and touring. And for those of you who have never seen the band play, this album is as good as being there. "The kittens are out tonight!"

5 out of 5 stars Fight Song - Craziest 1:30 minute song out there.......2006-09-09

This album is really well done. Everyone out there should listen to the instrumental Fight Song! It has some really good drum work on the fast parts of the song, and will get you pumped for anything, especially a fight!

5 out of 5 stars Fun ska at its best.......2006-07-20

I love this CD. The Aquabats have a great fun way of playing music and telling silly stories. The CD has a lot of funny songs like The Cat With Two Heads. The entire CD will have you smiling and feeling like dancing.

5 out of 5 stars Easily Their Best.......2006-05-18

Although none of their albums are bad, this is by far the best one. The Fury of the Aquabats is 13 amazing songs that are hilarious and great to sing along to as well as 2 cool instrumental songs and one song im not crazy about (Attacked By Snakes). If you have the slightest liking for ska, funny music or just upbeat, fun music that makes you happy then this would easily be my number one reccommendation for you. All you need to do is pop it in and no matter how you were feeling before... you are guaranteed a smile after the first couple of seconds of Super Rad. It is just impossible to be sad when listening to these guys. My favorite songs are Super Rad, Red Sweater, Captain Hampton..., Story of Nothing, Idiot Box, My Skateboard, Lobster Bucket & Theme Song. This not only their best album but one of the best ska albums as well.

5 out of 5 stars the aquabats will always be top notch.......2006-04-17

It seems like no matter what these guys come up against, they still manage to put on a great live show and release awesome albums.

The Fury Of The Aquabats is probably one of my favorite albums that the band has ever released. Even if these guys aren't on a major record label with tons of funding behind them, they put their heart and soul into the music... which fans can really respect!

If you're ready for some funky up-beat ska music, I'd encourage you to purchase The Fury Of The Aquabats today. You won't be wasting any money by investing in these guys, i promise!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite and most listened to CD to date.......2006-03-15

I haven't listened to many other ska CDs, so I can't judge this compared to others; however it's a really great CD and I listen to it on a daily basis...really infectious. Especially good songs are Red Sweater and Cat With 2 Heads, though basically every song on this CD is worth a listen or 126.

The swing revival of the late 1990s has been a boon for many acts that have been jumpin' and jivin' for years, San Francisco's Indigo Swing among them. But where many of those acts are hybrids of traditional swing mixed with punk, ska, or rockabilly, Indigo Swing stick much closer to a traditional, jazz-boogie version of the form. With a couple of hoppin' exceptions ("Blue Suit Boogie," "Drinkin' It Up"), this record is filled mostly with a hardy selection of down-tempo, horn- and piano-based ballads that are finely suited to Johnny Boyd's smooth, soulful croon. Even when they cut loose, Indigo Swing invoke a sophisticated, bluesy style far removed from much of the kitschy, rock-&-roll-based swing of their contemporaries. --Donovan Finn

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for people new to swing.......2006-04-13

As the title of this review suggests, this is a fantastic first buy for somebody who is new to swing music. Of course, if you're a veteran of the genre, and you don't have this cd, you should probably go ahead and get it. The songs are well written and exceptionally catchy. Overall the songs are fairly mellow, by which I mean they lack the overly-brash horns which are so common in the neo-swing genre. I highly recommend this cd to anybody who is interested in jazz, swing, or simply wants something really fun to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars Top swing CD.......2005-07-19

For listening or dancing, you'd be hard pressed to find a better swing CD. Boyd's smooth vocals are incredible and there are some great original numbers here. I could listen to this CD all day and dance to it all night without getting tired of it!

5 out of 5 stars Primaro Magnifico Neo-Swing.............2005-03-06

What a delicious collection of music this treat is! Dynamic & danceable throughout. This is Neo-Swing @ its finest. Looking for that special something that is `all meat & potatoes'? Tired of the ` kibbles & bits' so prevalent in the releases of recorded music? (Usually one purchases a CD, & gets 2 or 3 nice pieces, & the rest is filler). This collection is easy to dance to, vibrant & happy, or steamy & sensual. Exciting music, so alive w/ lots of fun breaks, runs, & accents- emphasizing horns & a stride/jazz woogie/boogie woogie piano. Harmonies delicately blending in and out to unquestionably quantify their musicality understanding. Then, there is Johnny Boyd.... Johnny Boyd IS the vocals that are very smooth, about as smooth as you can get them. He repeatedly exercises that special & velvety sound- melting in that extra smoothness, almost as if they were built for swing music. Watch out for those saxophone accents, you can almost see them building!!! I have memorized all the breaks & accents & a better collection of music is far & few between. In regards to dancing- This IS Lindy Hop & East Coast Swing, with a tempo (I'd say is 100-160ish BPM). In closing, there are very few pieces of music I would classify as a `gotta have', but this is a true gotta have. Okay, don't/can't dance? Fine. It's all GOOD!! The lyrics of this album SWING of Beauty, Hope, Life & its flavor and passion that sums up what both life and love are about...good times, regrets, fun, and more fun! "Regular Joe" & "How Lucky...," just the titles alone, sums up what this whole disc is about and the good things that happen to regular people (Oh, what a dance number!!!!). `How Lucky Can One Guy Be', often brings me sunny days when the clouds of life overcast my views of things. Graciously Yours, Steven R. Mashin- Oregon City, Oregon.

Jump blues and boogie woogie. Very nice! The first album of Indigo Swing. Only one song ("Regular Joe")with big band sound. It was arranged by Bill Elliott of Bill Elliott Sing Orchestra. William Beatty and Johnny Boyd wrote most of the songs except "Violent Love" (very nice cover of Willie Dixon's song) and instrumental "Hot in Harlem".

5 out of 5 stars Aquabats at their finest.......2007-05-15

This album is hot and cold, though more the former than the latter. I remember having the same impressions when it first came out, and I still feel it is their finest recording. You can almost taste the influence on southern californian sister band No Doubt's electronic Rock Steady (seriously) that came out 9 or 12 months later...

Much less "ska", the Aquabats have taken a new and entirely unforseen electronic / analog synth direction, while still retaining their strangely potent combination of occasionally pertinent lyrics, over the top Devo influences, catchy songs, and a full horn section. Awesome stuff.

When it's bad, however, it's pretty bad. I submit as exhibit A Lovers of Loving Life and one or two other disposables.

Once past that, there are some really cool songs, some of which are musically and / or lyrically quite dense, all of which are entertaining.

The whole album is extremely creative and also a testament to the talent of the Aquabats.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant?.......2006-03-13

A vaguely uneven but enjoyable album perked with two of the greatest bizarre pop tunes I've ever encountered in a very long career of encountering bizarre pop tunes--Tiny Pants and Canis Lupus. If the whole album had been at the level set by that pair this could've been in the Top 100 Hall of Fame.

5 out of 5 stars truth is a harsh mistress........2006-02-13

if someone tells you this albums is anything less of amazing, punch them in the face and call them a liar. i can honestly say this is the best album of all time. people that dislike this album or think its mediocre are bad people. they are people who dislike amazing things and love bad things. so basically if you buy this album and enjoy you are a good human being and have a soul. but if you dont buy this album or do buy it and think it is horrible you are in with the group of bad people that don't deserve to hear great things or possibly even live.

5 out of 5 stars Hey kids, what do we got?!.......2005-09-13

Don't listen to any kids who say "Fashion Zombies!" is The Aquabats' best song. Just tune them out immediately.

I adore The Aquabats. Christian (The MC Bat Commander) said that this album was different. He wasn't lying, though I sort of discredited him at first considering he threw up rotten half-and-half all over some kid named Todd thirty seconds after he revealed in the brilliance of this album.

This album is an exploration into a whole new world for The Aquabats. If you've been a fan from the start, or just plunged into their world recently, be true to them and get this album! It's fanatastic! They have their insane, crazy songs, and some serious, meaningful songs that absolutely take my breath away. Case in point, "Hello, Good Night" is a gorgeous song about death, life, and finding meaning in what you have. It's so different for them, but they do emotional lyrics in a way that's totally their own, but also so easy to relate to.

Another amazing song on this CD is "Chemical Bomb", which holds deep insight to the fate of this world.

Looking past that, my favourite song is on this CD, "Lovers Of Loving Love". The Aquabats do love songs right! Fun, sweet, adorable, and absoultely lucious, I am in love with this song about being in love. And tasting cherry chapstick, ahh, ahh, ahh.

And wow, the cover art and inside booklet are so amazing and fun. I love to look at the art and the super rad photos. All of the lyrics are included with this CD, unlike some of their other CD's where in I had to look online to decode what Christian was screaming.

I don't know if ska fans will enjoy this, considering I like The Aquabats, not ska. But if you like good music, or you love The Aquabats, then this is for you!

3 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2005-09-06

This is the Aquabats worst outing and its pretty bad. Fury and myths are much better. But there new alblum Charge! is my favorite Fashion Zombies is the best song they have made. But if you liked them for being ska then you wont like Charge they almost have no ska on it and the horns are completely gone.
