Accuse Rod Stewart of what you like--through the years he's been called a philanderer, a has-been, a pageant-ish progenitor of puff rock--but as he has consistently proved with his Great American Songbook series, the concept of dignity is not lost on him. There is a time, after all, for leaping across stages in leopard-print spandex while shamelessly parading an unparalleled gift for scratchy-voiced seduction, and he is past it. Past his prime is another thing. On this fourth installation of the Clive Davis-produced series, Stewart again makes excellent use of his rolodex: Diana Ross, whose affection for this material comes through as convincingly as her spike-haired partner's, cuddles up for opener "I've Got a Crush On You," Chaka Khan packs her bags but not her mighty vocals for "You Send Me," and Sir Elton shelves the recent balladeer's instincts for a rip-roaring run through "Makin' Whoopee." A handful of marquee instrumentalists also returned Rod's calls-- Dave Koz blows sax on "Nevertheless," and trumpeters Chris Botti and Roy Hargrove turn up the heat on "I Wish You Love" and "My One and Only Love" respectively. As on earlier discs, though, it's when Rod rules the spotlight alone that he can be most compelling: Cue up "My Funny Valentine" in the right frame of mind and you may never need to hear it sung by another. Retiring the satin shirts in favor of this material was the smartest move Stewart ever made. --Tammy La GorceMore from the Great American Songbook

Stunning renditions of Leo Robins' fogotten gems..........2005-03-01
A great Standards singer's excellent album.......2004-12-29
No female singer in recent memory-even counting the great and still-working Keely Smith as "recent"-was able to get the full value of a song as Susannah was, especially with songs where there was a lot of value. Why I especially love this album is that it puts the marvelous Leo Robin center stage, a man that wrote songs that women singers could showcase, relate to-he even made poor confused Marilyn Monroe convincing. I'm not going to claim the status of greatest songwriter of all for him-that's arguably Berlin, Porter, Kern, or Arlen-but he was a fine writer that in the scheme of things is often overlooked.
Brava, Susannah!
Susannah McCorkle working too hard.......2004-12-21
Susannah, therefore, had to do a Leo Robin album, and while these songs are great, Susannah's versions will for the most part never be the canonical version. She just works too hard at singing these songs, and consequently, they come off as a Berklee degree recital-exactly the reason so many people have never really been fans of several other "cabaret revival" vocalists, such as Karen Akers.
It doesn't help her case that the canonical versions of two of the most famous of these songs were defined by a non-singer and a singer better than she was credited for in her day but hardly in McCorkle's class, namely Bob Hope (Thanks For the Memory) and Marilyn Monroe (Diamonds). Those who follow my reviews know by now that I'm an irredeemable Monroe-worshipper, so if you think that colors my judgment that Marilyn's 'Diamonds' is a whole lot more fun to listen to than Susannah's, maybe you're right.
Monroe also did the other songs here from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", with Jane Russell, and briefly 'Thanks' as well in her last musical engagement-the JFK birthday show in Madison Square Garden-so her shadow is cast over this album more than perhaps even McCorkle realized. Marilyn was a reasonable vocalist-better than her modern emulator, Madonna-and it's a great regret she never recorded except for vocal parts to her films, although one could make a pretty good case she probably intended to and had in any case never intended to leave us so early!
Susannah's work succeeds-or, rarely, fails-on its own terms, and while this album is no failure, I reluctantly can only give it three stars, because it shouldn't be your first or second or probably even third McCorkle album. It's for McCorkle fans and hardcore students of Leo Robin only.
A lovely tribute to Leo's music.......2002-09-15
The songs were composed for various shows and musicals, these being (according to the liner notes) Bubbling over, Dance for life, Monte Carlo, ofParis, The big broadcast of 1938, Tropic holiday, Centennial summer, The time the place and the girl, Casbah (two songs) and Gentlemen prefer blondes (three songs).
The title track was adopted as the theme tune to Bob Hope's television show. It was an obvious choice for him as he performed it (with Shirley Ross) in the original show. In that show, it was about an ex-couple who meet up again by accident, although the song could be interpreted in other ways.
Another well-known track here is Diamonds are a girl's best friend, first written for Carol Channing but later recorded by Marilyn Monroe with censored lyrics. My ideal was a song which Leo composed with Richard Whiting, who's daughter Margaret later recorded the song (several times, in fact).
Susannah is noted for her interpetations of the old classics - not always following the standard arrangement and occasionally doing them completely differently. As there are so few of these songs of which I have other versions to compare with, all I can say is that each and every song here is done in a way that suits Susannah ideally, and that there is plenty of variation.
I don't have a favorite Susannah CD - she recorded so many high-quality albums - but this is as good as any of the others.
Thank You Susannah.......2001-11-10
One thing we can always thank Susannah McCorkle for is the fact that she exposed us to the work of many great composers. Many of us have heard one or two songs by that composer but Susannah gives us a CD full. We can then fully appreciate the body of work from that composer. We can also find out that a composer like Robin collaborated with other fine composers such as Jule Styne, Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen.
Of course, "Memory" is the centerpiece of this CD but we also get "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend", which everyone has heard. Most of Robin's songs were written in the 30's and 40's for either stage shows or movies. Susannah's interpetations makes them feel as fresh and enjoyable as the day they were written.
I have always loved the fact that Susannah had a voice that alwyas made her seem to care about the songs she was singing. She makes them deep and personal and you get the feeling she is toched by each of her songs in some meaningful way. Perhaps that is what makes them unique. The only artist that reaches that deep today is Jacqui Naylor.
"Thanks for the Memory" is another CD from the McCorkle catalog that her fans will enjoy.
