Spicy Fun!!! A Must Have.......2006-12-15

The Spice Girls were an amazing girl group, and though they disbanded and will never recapture that magic on thier own, we must look to the solo spice girls for our dose of spicy pop music. Sadly Geri, Emma, Victoria, Mel B, and Mel C, have all steered somewhat away from that fun pop music they used to make so they can make "serious music" but thank goodness for Geri. Schizophonic is the closest thing to a Spice Girls Record to come from a Solo SPice. Though all there albums are good, this one is fun and catchy and tongue in cheek without trying to be too serious. At Ten tracks the album is short and sweet. Though some tracks are completely forgetable (Someones Watching Over Me) but for the most part everything is campy and cute. Geris voice is harsh but not unpleasent. "Look at me" starts things off on the right tone with trumpets and 60s style swing. "Lift Me Up" is pretty soft rock and that keeps things from getting over obnoxious. And "Mi Chico Latino" adds some latin flavors and is a Standout track. "walkway" is the albums strongest ballads refrencing her departure from the Spice Girls.This album is fun, not incredibly cool, but its unique campyness is refreshing and lighthearted.

Old but good.......2006-07-31

I absolutely love this cd. I bought it back when it was first released in '99 and it's still one of my all time favorites. It's pop, sure, but it's fun and at times really heartfelt. I really wish more people would have given this cd a chance rather than laugh it off because she was once a Spice Girl. She was great in the Spice Girls and she's amazing on her own! I highly recommend this cd.

I bought this disc while in the midst of my Geri (Ginger) Halliwell crush back when. Though I don't think "Schizophonic" was anyone's "Album Of the Year" when it came out, it is actually better than I expected. Some of the tracks lack greatness, and her voice was never her strong-point, but between the better half of the album and her delivery, it works. It succeeds in the same way the Spice Girls did, in being just fun and catchy pop, nothing more. My favorite songs are "Look At Me", "Lift Me Up", "Mi Chico Latino", and "Sometime". Overall, I don't think the music is quite as hot as she is herself, but it is rather spicey, and well worth the used price here.

geri has really matured these days instead of how she used to
be right after she left the spice girls.and went to model for
playboy.this album tells about how she was felling about everything.when geri was in the spice girls it was the time
of her life until they started treating her like she was nonsense
so she did the right thing got tired of it and left! whats wrong
with that. and she really proved herself to everyone when she
became a solo singer. this album is fantastic the lyrics are
great the music is great.so i think it would be good if you
bought this cd! and maybe you could add it to your cd collection
if you have one.

I remember this album when I was 12. I love this album. This album reflects her own contradictions. Camp,quirky,fun,heartfelt and shamelessly,gloriously pop-tastic,the album features a big ballad with a full orchestra,a Hindu choir on another song,and a nine-piece brass section playing New Orleans-style jazz in the middle of the song "Look At Me". This album should have been promoted more. Remember,this was 1999.

This is a out of print item that should have been way more successful than it turned out. Nuno touches a lot of different musical styles here and does them all justice I would say, from electronic to folk to punk to straight ahead rock and back. Glad I bought this back in the day.

Nuno Bettencourt as a songwriter.......2007-03-11

After earning himself a much respected position in the guitar world with his former band Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt decided to go solo and release an album where he'd play most of the instruments himself. On his debut album Schizophonic, he is responsible for all the instrumentation and arrangements, but he has also collaborated with some other musicians, including his former band mate Gary Cherone on two tracks.

It would be daft to try and explain Nuno Bettencourt's technical abilities on the guitar, as he is one of the finest from his era. With silky smooth tone, varied techniques, and a far-reaching musical mind, his playing surpasses pretty much any player. However, the purpose of Schizophonic is vastly different. This isn't an album where Bettencourt set out to impress his fanbase with guitar acrobatics, as he, much like Vito Bratta, George Lynch, and Criss Oliva to name but a few, has never been about proving how adept he is at his instrument. This album documents his songwriting and sees him touching on a vast array of styles and genres, including the punky pop of "Gravity", which quickly morphs into a hard-rocking piece, still bordering on experimental thanks to its processed vocal and guitar arrangements; the bass-heavy "Swollen Princess" that blends hard rock and funk at its most exuberant, and even the slower yet ultimately catchy "Crave", marked by distinct pop vocal harmonies and a neat, beautifully arranged acoustic transition that precedes a terrific guitar solo.

Besides the screaming, over-the-top rockers like "2 Weeks in Dizkneelande" and "Fun by Me", Nuno also exhibits a deeper songwriting vision on tracks such as the exotic "Fallen Angels", an effect-laden number rich in central bass runs and swift transitions between heavy and slow passages. The vocal-based pop of "Karmalaa" belies its roots due to numerous sound textures woven into the music, shifting from nice percussion work to rocking leads, and whispered, warm vocal attributions and spoken parts. The album is further diversified on the largely acoustic-driven "Pursuit of Happiness". "Confrontation" slightly harkens back to his Extreme days with strong acoustic and fragile vocals blended and erupting into powerful drum and bass combinations. Interestingly, "You" has Gary Cherone guesting and putting in a great vocal performance, albeit greatly different than anything he did with Extreme, given its filmic soundtrack-like textures at the end.

Though simplistic at face value, there is a lot going on in Schizophonic. No doubt Nuno Bettencourt spent long hours on these meticulous arrangements and the successful blend of his past sounds and more modern elements. The album is worth looking into if you are curious how Nuno sounds post-Extreme.

Phenomenal.......2007-01-19

This album is just incredible. Period.

I was never a big Extreme fan--never really cared for Gary Cherone's voice. But still I liked Nuno's guitar playing. This album was a huge step forward from Extreme, featuring an updated sound (no cheesy gang chorus vocals) and Nuno on practically every instrument (even the drums if I'm not mistaken).

There are plenty of guitarists that can play, but how many can play, write AND sing like this??? Nuno stands in a class by himself after this record, and it's really a shame that there hasn't been a 2nd solo disc. Sure, there are the Mourning Widows and Population 1 albums (MW is similar in style to Schizophonic--Population 1 is TOTALLY different and a little too blah for me), but I would love to hear another Nuno solo record.

An eclectic start to Nunos solo career.......2006-03-23

Eclectis is the word. This is a release where Nuno really strides out and does some vastly more interesting stuff than he did with Extreme. It's hard to pinpoint specific tracks - other than to say that there is a lot more human connectivity here. Less the rawk party band polish of Extreme. The production is OK, nothing too shiny, but enough to tidy up what are at times some quite musically dense tracks.

The way weird cover art - and song titles like Swollen Princess - show this as an album by a guy looking for a new identity. The album does drone on a little as the release suffers from too many tracks. It's a very regular mistake - bands put out 15+ tracks onto a disc when they'd be better just choosing their best 11 or thereabouts.

Saw that guy tour Sydney, Australia in 2005 and he was full of warmth and genuine fun. But that doesn't mean I can give this more than three stars. Honestly - buy the best of that I've also reviewed and then if that floats your boat, come back to visit his individual albums.

Hooks to sink your teeth into.......2005-05-01

This is one amazing album. I am a nuno fan and was very dissapointed when Extreme broke up. He is a rare talent and can mix guitar chops with mind blowing melodies.But listening to this album you would never guess it. "Schizophonic" is "extremely" stripped down. The emphasis is on songs and not on guitar playing. Give it a couple of listens and you will not be able to take it out of the player for a long time. It is very stripped down with vocal harmonies that tingle your spine (crave), intense angst (dizkneeland), love songs (fine by me) and list goes on and on. Once you get it, there is no use trying to pry yourself loose you will be hooked for life. Awesome stuff.

This was Combustible Edison second or third album, depending on if you count the Four Rooms soundtrack or not. It is somewhat of a disappointment. Not to say that it's bad. It's good, but not to the standards of their wonderful first album. Still, fans of the lounge music revival of the 1990s will probably enjoy it.

Schizophonic travel through time.......2003-08-19

This was the first CE record I bought and I find it in many ways the best CE record. There are no weak tracks and the best ones are absolutely hilarious. Solid State and Short Double Latte are my favorites. If you want to travel back in time to the sunny days of your childhood or you want to get a glimpse of the carefree past or just happen to like the sweet nonsense of lounge music, I recommend this album.

One of my all time favorites.......2003-08-14

This cd never fails to pick me up when I've got da blues...The over-all feel is breezy and light yet the musicianship is excellent. Top notch sound quality. Most tracks are instrumental lounge which is fine, though I wouldn't mind hearing a few more vocal tracks sung by Miss Lily Banquette -chanteuse extrordinaire. The masterpiece, of course, is Morticia making fine use of the harpsicord and well placed 'la la la la's'. Alright already reminds me a little of the Odd Couple theme on tv, and Solid State sounds like a cocktail party on a satellite orbiting Mars. I think this is every bit as good as I Swinger and I can't understand why other reviewers think otherwise. I only wish it wasn't so short. Combustible Edison came out of the lounge resurgence of the mid-90's but there was something very original and creative about their music. Positive fun. Impossible world was released sometime in '98 and that's the last I've heard from them. To bad...I'd really like to hear more!

This is the best Combustible Edison CD. "Solid State" is my favorite tune, a deliriously infectious song that I have loved since the first time that I heard it last November."52" and "Alright, Already" help make this one of the finest pop albums of all time.

Retro Lounge Music.......2002-10-18

I'm not a fan of this style of music, but I've found that most modern renditions of classic music styles tends to sound unoriginal and stylized almost into a caricature of the original style, overemphasizing the obvious features of that style.

Awesome.......2007-05-06

This is one of the jazz records I like most, turning back to it often. The lineup is almost perfect: bass, drums, fender rhodes keyboards and Robben Ford on the guitar, with the exception of the first and last number where he switches to the alto sax. It results a mellow yet intense sound which characterizes and unifies the album. The succession of the numbers fits the title. The first is a mid-tempo swing: the theme is quietly presented, a brief electric piano solo follows and then the sax gradually raises the tension, screams, and then goes back to silence. The second number is a gloomy, slow swing in three where the long guitar solo is intertwined by keyboards interventions. Then the mood changes; the next piece raises the tension with a mid-tempo funky rhythm, accelerates to a climax and then calms down, ending with an intense, layered guitar solo. The next piece is a sort of slight reprise of the previous one, opened by a great yet extremely simple attack. The fifth piece changes again the pace as it is a latin beat, possibly the most leisured moment of the whole record. The close is a ballad, actually a free form dialogue between the keyboards and a delayed saxofone, softly leading the listener to the natural conclusion of the album.
The work is a snapshot of a young, creative artist in a state of grace, where everything - sound, composition, variety - just works. It is a shiny little gem that keeps on fascinating me after all these years. So perfectly beautiful that I cannot even think to listen to anything else Robben Ford has produced.
By the way, I cannot understand the previous comment on this album. Robben Ford is credited to have written every piece in the album, and he extensively plays on all of them. Also, tt doesn't resemble me a movie soundtrack at all.

This is a boot, a soundtrack for a low budget (...) film. Robben has stated that he was not told that this was being released and he did not condone the release. On top of that, he hardly plays and the songs(if you want to call them that) are horrid. Pass on this.

Enjoyable debut from Geri Halliwell.......2004-03-07

Rather than wait for the standard domestic CD of The Artist Formerly Known As Ginger Spice, I ordered the limited edition which had the CD and a video for her leadoff single "Look At Me" as well as an interview with her. But of the Spice Girls, Geri Halliwell's epithet Ginger was appropriate, as she was the most vivacious, tied for most assertive along with Scary Spice, and the one with a flare for drama. Schizophonic is a great showcase for Geri's voice apart from her former bandmates, and it's incredible to believe that this eclectic mix was produced by Absolute, one of the co-producers of the Spicey's first two albums.

The brassy and jamming "Look At Me" is basically about how image-obsessed we are and the various masks people put on fitting whatever image they want to present. Per the interview, Geri says she's laughing at herself, especially when she sings "I am a drama queen if that's your thing. Baby I can even do reality." A standout track.

"Lift Me Up" shows Geri equally home with mid-paced ballads, backed as she is by string-synths and soul-style backing vocalists. Even more heartfelt is "Walkaway," underlying the conflict in abandoning loneliness for something else, yet pulled by that feeling that it's okay to be just one. The orchestral arrangements rise in pitch towards the end to match the feeling.

The Spanish guitars and other musical motifs in "Mi Chico Latino" is a nod to Geri's Spanish heritage--she's half Spanish.

"Goodnight Kiss" is a throwback to nighttime cafe jazz, and although Geri's no torch singer, the piano and sax work well to give the atmosphere. Call it above average for the genre.

"Bag It Up" recalls 70's disco and soul, especially with the loud brassy horns, and per the interview, it's a battle between opposites, and genders. However, she makes it clear she's wearing the trousers between the two, and she even tweaks gender roles: "men are from Venus, girls are from Mars." The most vivacious track here. I couldn't help noticing the backup singers listed: Pepsi and Shirley. Is it the Pepsi and Shirley who backed up Wham!, I wonder?

Per the interview, "Sometime" is a reflective track searching for peace of mind featuring a strong bass and piano backing. After the beginning electric sitar and an Indian female vocalist, "Let Me Love You" yields to a post-Spice pop merged with the Beatles' Indian-influenced music in the chorus.

With the spoken "It's important to learn to laugh at yourself Don't take life so seriously," the funky upbeat "You're In A Bubble" is a slap those who don't go by that intro, and for them to "call the police, cause your karma's in trouble."

After the video, where she puts on four personas, the sister, virgin bride, and white collar workaholic, and the vamp, and even her Ginger self in a funeral procession for that persona, she explains her obligations to other causes, such as a cancer benefit and UN spokesperson, that initially entailed her departure as early as October 1997, but whose cancellation made her question her role in a larger scope. She describes her time with the Spices as a whirlwind marriage that ended when she decided to leave the peak of the pop mountain they had climbed, with no rancor shown.

Filled with good-natured brassy pop and soft reflective numbers, Schizophonic indeed belies its etymological meaning, a split sound. More exciting than Emma Bunton's first solo effort and definitely a far cry from Mel C's solo debut. For her second release, she screamed and went a little bit faster, but I've already talked about that. Oh, and the keychain has "Geri Halliwell" on one side, "Look At Me" on the other, and it still holds my keys.

CD-Good, Rest of Stuff-Not Worth It.......2000-06-11

I bought this package hoping to get an extra length CD, with perhaps some NICE things with it. The video that is included is really just a waste of time. And I'm not saying all this because I hate the Spice Girls, and Geri, I'm actually a great fan of all of them. The key chain is cheaply made, and the poster isn't really a poster, it's about the size of a piece of paper. If you are looking into buying this, it's really not worth the extra money UNLESS you don't the Schizophonic album yet. It's probably the best thing you will get out of this.

This Cd is full of heart and meaning.......2000-04-03

Geri Halliwell has remade her image, she proves that sexy is not always what counts. Although her voice is no Madonna, Geri's music is full of meaning, and she writes 95% of her music, which shows she has the brains and the bod. This cd is full of flavor. If you are feeling down, listen to Lift Me Up, of Bag It Up, and if you are really in a good mood, listen to Look At Me. You can not go wrong with this cd!
