3 out of 5 stars Beware; Excerpts.......2006-12-05

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.

4 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17

Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.

Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.

Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.

In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.

The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.

For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.

So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17

This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07

I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11

THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.

*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15

THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

5 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor.......2007-07-21

The Jennie DeVoe Band is an incredibly engaging group fronted by an amazing singer and songwriter. When you see a live show it is more like seeing the Grand Canyon, an Eclipse or a Sun Rise for the first time than it is a concert. You see a diverse group of ages and people all mouthing the words and signing along to the set. Newcomers are amazed and DeVoe-tees are moved every time.

Do yourself a favor, buy the whole collection and get out to see her live.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2004-03-06

Jennie Devoe's star quality shines bright all through this "live" recording. I have seen Jennie perform live several times and putting this cd in to play is just like being there. Her warmth and sincerity jumps right out of the speakers and into the mind, heart, and soul of the listener. Unlike so many "live" albums by artists that are of substandard quality and content this one is a keeper and will surely become a collectible once Jennie Devoe hits the BIG TIME and is a world renowned Music Idol!

Rising from the Manhattan club scene that gave birth to the Strokes and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, White Light Motorcade embraces the same `60s garage and '70s punk ethos worshipped by those bands. While they obviously took part of their name from a Velvet Underground classic ("My Way" kicks off an awful lot like one of Lou Reed's earliest tunes, or at least a Strokes track), White Light Motorcade seem less the one-trick pony many of their peers. There's an almost U2-worthy anthemic quality to a great many of the 12 tracks on the band's debut. The boys also borrow heavily from '70s glam-rock and '90s Britpop, making their sound all that more palatable and complex. "Open Your Eyes," the opening track, wouldn't sound out at all of place on Oasis's earlier albums. And the terrific "It's Happening," after beginning a lot like the Vines' "Get Free," is centered by Mark Lewis's melodic guitar hook, producing a sound that Supergrass would be absolutely thrilled to reproduce. The band doesn't quite hit a home run when they take on two ballads, but when they rock, which is most of the time, this is about as good as post-millennium rock gets. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars rock'nRoll returns.......2004-09-01

about a year ago i happen to be attending a show in atlanta to see a band called Breakheart Beat. they opened up for White Light Motorcade whom at the time i had not heard of. as soon as they walked onto stage i know they had something special. the bass player played this little ryth that sounded like a f'in helicopter was comin down on us and i swear i really thought it for a second. but god it was more then that. they started and i knew these guys could save music. rock'n roll has returned with bands like these guys, white stripes, kings of leon, and the strokes. i promise this record will not let you down. if you like rock and enjoy rock'nRoll then buy this. it deserves 10 out of 5!

5 out of 5 stars Open your eyes.......2004-06-28

WLM is a GREAT band~ would definitely recommend the CD

5 out of 5 stars The best band you never heard of........2004-05-14

I hadn't heard of these guys until by sheer coincidence they happened to be opening for another band I went to see. In the space of the 45 minutes that they played, they not only won me over but also the entire crowd. Everyone there obviously had no idea who they were when they first got on stage, but were blown away by time they got off. Pure attitude and energy.

I picked up their EP "It's Happening" at the show that night, and bought this CD as soon as it was released. (Sorry, I'm just getting around to writing this now.) It did not disappoint. These guys just exhude attitude, grit, and plain ol' balls out rock and roll. They have all the attitude of the current garage movement and more, but display it with more energy than any of the other ones I've heard. Better than the Strokes, White Stripes, Vines, all of them.

4 out of 5 stars alittle more work n they'd be amazing.......2003-07-22

After my first quick listen I didn't think I really liked this album. But after listening to the songs a second time they began to grow on me. The band shows alot of resemblance to Rooney, who i think are a great rock band. They are slightly heavier though, and i think thats good.. if you are looking for a record that has everything from melody and great vocals to garage rock power chords then this is for you.... if your gonna be technical and look for complicated solos n such, then go for sometyhing else, possibly Rooney.

1 out of 5 stars what?.......2003-07-14

this might be the dumbest record of all time. nothing happens the whole time. it's amazingly uncomplex, lacking in teeth, style, or edge. it sounds like they asked somebody to make them sound like a mix of u2, r.e.m., the strokes, and every other tired cliche. it goes to show that a band needs more than a catchy name, cool rocker looks, and a new york city location. skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Superior NWOBHM album.......2005-10-20

I totally disagree with the Moore-bashing. In my opinion, his albums with Samson were by far the best. The first Samson albums were a little rough sounding, and Bruce was still developing his vocal style when he was with the band. I had the Shock Tactics album when it came out. Although the production had gotten better and my friends and I enjoyed it, we didn't care much for "Bruce Bruce", as he called himself then. His singing improved tremendously when he joined Maiden, but Nicky Moore was a much better singer with Samson.

Most of the songs on this album came from Before the Storm, which is hard to find on cd, and Don't Get Mad Get Even, which is not available on cd. So this live album is the best chance to get these songs on cd. Before the Storm in particular is an awesome album--it's the best Samson album and an absolutely essential classic for any collector of NWOBHM. I have it on cd from Molten Metal USA, and I highly recommend getting it if you can. But especially if you can't get Before the Storm, you should definitely have this live cd if you consider yourself a fan of NWOBHM. It's good stuff. The sound quality is top notch, all the songs are excellent, the performances are outstanding, and Samson's guitar sounds great. It gives a great sampling of Samson from the Nicky Moore era, which is the best Samson, in my opinion. Even fans who prefer earlier Samson should enjoy this album. But I'm biased--because I can't imagine how any fan of classic rock could not like it.

2 out of 5 stars Samson live...with Nicky Moore....great :-(.......2005-09-21

Thank You and good night was the first official live album released by Samson. Great idea to release a live a album...its just 2 albums too late. Why did I say that? Because Thank You and Goodnight was released when Samson was at their weakest...with Nicky Moore on vocals. As you can tell the word "great" in my review title is used in a sarcastic manner.

I've stated before, Nicky Moore isn't a very good vocalist. His bluesy style vocals clash with Samson's original NWOBHM sound. Not only is he a lousy vocalist, he's terrible with the crowd. All he says is "this is an old one" and "thank you and good night". What's with playing with and talking to the crowd? He's says minimal and does not know how to play the crowd at all.

Another problem is the tracklisting. Of course most of the material is from the Nicky Moore vocal albums Before the Storm and Don't Stay Mad - Get Even. Though I never considered any of Samson's albums considerably strong, but those two are easily the weaker of Samson's outputs. There is only one song off of the bands debut Survivors and second album Head On. What's shocking is that there is not one song off of the bands most successful album Shock Waves! I don't know, but maybe it's a good thing cause Nicky Moore could murder those classic Bruce Dickinson Samson songs like Riding with the Angels.

The production itself isn't overly strong. The guitars sound good and everything, but the vocal works is a little weak as they sound hallow and distant. Well with Nicky Moore, maybe that isn't such a bad thing.

One the upside, Paul Samson's guitar playing is fantastic. He hits every mark perfectly. Great picking and great solos. This man really was a god in the guitar world. It's a shame he never got the recognition he deserved.

Overall I have to say this is a below average live album. Other than some good guitar playing, there is nothing really special on this release. It lacks classic Samson songs and vocalist Nicky Moore is boring. I would only recommend this live album to Samson collectors or fans of the Nicky Moore Samson albums, if there are any...
