About the Artist
Richard Whitmarsh, Conductor of the South Shore Concert Band, became avidly interested in music when his father presented him with his first trumpet at the age of 12. To this day, music has been the focus of his life. Throughout the years, he has taught music, repaired, retailed and wholesaled musical instruments and - more importantly - been a professional musician and conductor all of his adult life. For the past 25 years, the South Shore Concert Band has been directed by Mr. Whitmarsh. Under the name, SOUNDS OF THE CIRCUS, the band has, to date, released 16 recordings of the only existing, extensive documentary series of music from the golden age of the American circus.

5 out of 5 stars And The Beat Goes On!.......2001-09-01

What is the "essence" of circus music, particularly marches, as opposed to, say, a concert band and its style of play and instrumentation? One might say that with the typical circus band, "less is more" or "quality rather than quantity" would serve as operative phrases to describe their objective. That is, the number of musicans in a circus band is ideally in the range of 15 to 20, as opposed to 35 to 40 in a concert band. Also, whereas a concert band tries to blend the sound of a march among the different instruments, to produce a "smooth" and balanced sound, every individual instrument is heard under the "big top", with emphasis on brass instruments (particularly lower brass) and snare and bass drums, producing a slighly "ragged", disjointed sound. In addition, a concert band plays all ranges of sound volume, from very soft to very loud, whereas in a circus, this ranges from loud to louder to loudest, frequently at a very rapid pace. A good analogy might be that when you hear a circus band, think ragtime or dixieland band, and concert band, symphony or "pops" orchestra.

On this, the third album in this series, it seems that the South Shore Concert Band has made more of an effort to "bring out" the individual musicians, at least on some of the numbers, more than they did in their first two efforts. Not too surprisingly, with 25 musicians, the sound they produce is usually somewhere between a concert and circus band, with elements of both at times, but also with outstanding musicianship.

The concluding number on this CD, "Purple Carnival", is unusual in at least a couple of respects, being written by a composer, Harry Alford, who had no connection with circuses (this is the only one of his marches that I know of that was written in this style), and being written for Northwestern University (purple and white being their school colors) - in other words, the very rare "football" march written in a "circus" style. Alford (1883-1939), wrote marches in both the traditional and "modern" march styles, but was probably better known for his "Professional Arranging Bureau" in the Chicago area, and as a pioneer of football "halftime" shows, commissioned by A. A. Harding, Director of University of Illinois Bands, regarded as one of the best college bands in the 20's and 30's. His other most popular march, appropriately, was titled, "Glory of the Gridiron".

This CD also has the first example in this series of a non-march, Bert Kaempfert's "Maltese Melody", a so-called "characteristic" piece, which were typically American or European composers' musical impressions of different ethnic groups, as portrayed in circus acts.

Although this album has the fewest selections of any in this series, it is still well worth having for its collection of obscure material.
