Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.

Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14

City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25

1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:

This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Levi Stubbs, Obie Benson, Lawrence Payton and Duke Fakir of the Four Tops were jazz singers, the best kind of close four-part harmony heard in the mid-west in the 1950s and nationally, for a time, when they backed up their idol, Billy Eckstine, on tour. The Tops had a few singles in the Fifties and early Sixties, mostly then-contemporary styles of rocking doo-wop that did little to further their career. Berry Gordy at Motown heard them live, loved them for what they did best, and signed them to his fledgling Workshop Jazz label in 1963. After a year recording a jazz album that did not see the light of day for 35 years, the Tops saw the Workshop label close down. But they survived to become one of the icons of the Motown Sound. Their versatility brought more than H-D-H productions to the music stand. Gordy also knew they could perform in any venue, singing show tunes and pop-jazz. Subsequently, their albums were filled with covers of current hits by the likes of The Monkees, and Broadway music such as Fiddler On The Roof. Lost Without You surveys those many Motown sessions from the beginning of the Tops label tenure through the end of the decade. Lost... features 41 unreleased and rare tracks, 34 of which have never been heard before anywhere. Several of the released tracks are in new, extended stereo mixes. Of particular note besides the great B-sides is the majestic new mix of Ivy Jo Hunters Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever, which restores the track to the way he intended it be heard. Lonely Lover, once found on a U.K. collection, is given a surprise ending. And Wonderful Baby is not the version known to fans this collection includes alternate versions from two years earlier, providing an exclusive glimpse into the inner workings of Hitsville U.S.A.

Why, oh, why were these gems not released on any Four Tops album?

Here is more evidence that the Motown Vaults are housing some FANTASTIC music. This collection truly showcases the Four Tops ability to 'rock the joint' with their high-energy, up-tempo songs as well as 'pour on the passion' with their smooth ballads.

A real treat for avid Motown fans are the Four Tops covers of tunes recorded by Marvin Gaye, ('Sweeter as the Days Go By,' 'Gotta Say It,' 'Get My Hands On Some Lovin',' 'Lonely Lover'), and The Temptations ('It's a Lonely World Without Your Love') - also recorded by Marvin Gaye. The Four Tops certainly give these other top-ranking acts a run for their money.

Another point in this collection's favor is that there are no "filler" songs - every song sounds like the singers, musicians and producers gave it their all.
For Four Tops and Motown fans, this Lost & Found collection is a real must-have treasure.

Hip O Select strikes again!.......2005-10-19

Here is another example of the Hip O Select Motown stuff. Most of the music here has never been heard by the public at large before, nevertheless they will be pleased. The funk Brothers band always played extra specially well for the Four Tops. They took more risks and stretched out more. Great songs are here along with cool arrangements, super singing and 24 bit stereo remastering. Only 5000 pressed. Hippo Selecto Perfecto.

Great CD - Received Damaged.......2007-06-27

This CD was to be used for my May 19,2007 bride for her ceremony music.
The CD arrived damaged and Amazon did not have anymore in stock.
Thank God for an understanding bride.

Disappointing.......2004-10-31

A mostly music compilation that sounds like a creative mixing genius put it together. Saddly, the wedding entrance march is sung in German (I think). Some of the music is a little "thin" instead of being "full bodied". The wedding exit march will put listeners to sleep. I wish listening samples had been available or I would have saved the money.

Enjoyable by itself.......2000-03-30

The music is beautiful just for listening. The first CD could be used in a wedding. The 2nd CD contains instrumental versions of the songs which is soothing and peaceful; it could also be used in a wedding, but not for a reception. I did not buy this to use in a wedding - just for the music and I was not disappointed. It's a nice background for meditation, or remembering your own wedding. I just bought a second one for some friends who are getting married. And the price is right.

Classical CD is great, but the other one is horrible........1999-11-17

The first CD is filled with popular classic wedding songs and is really good, but the last CD is music that would make your guests think they were trapped in an elevator filled with easy listening music. I cannot understand why someone would compile those songs for a wedding!
