The Greatest Soul Singer.......2006-09-29
Marvin's best live collection to date.......2004-12-21
I was meaning to post something about this great live album some time ago but didn't get a chance to and now that I got a chance to, lemme just say that if it came to great live albums, Marvin definitely gets an A+ for his accomplishments in 1977's "Live at the London Palladium".
Recorded during a tour at the Palladium at London in 1976, a 37-year-old Marvin reportedly still a victim of stage fright managed to make the most confident performer seem chummy and tame. Marvin's emotions always take over in anything he does - be it on a song or on an album or live onstage, where he was considered to be one of the greatest live performers of his generation. Is there no question why?
It's a shame though because people always look up to Michael Jackson for his stage dynamics and yet he always rely on "The Moonwalk" or any dance move so he can't sing. Marvin was definitely the anthesis (sp?) of all of that. Unlike Ashlee Simpson and Lindsey Lohan and other "lip-synchers" out there, Marvin Gaye was an actual SINGER. He didn't have to rely on no back track to prove he was GREAT. And back then if you couldn't sing to save your life, you would be yanked off the stage so how come they're not doing it now?
And it's another shame that this album or any other Marvin Gaye album pre-1982 didn't get Grammy recognition! Again, it goes to show you how critics can be so shady.
Anyway, Marvin shines through this emotionally-charged performance. Whether he turns it out in "Let's Get It On" or he takes us on a trip down memory lane on some joints back in the '60s or if he lets us remember how great "What's Going On" was or his great period of making duets or the fabulous show-stopping rendition of "Distant Lover", you know that no other artist in soul or pop music or rock music can come close to his magic.
And just when he's done, he comes even harder with "Got to Give It Up". Off the record, it's one of the greatest dance/funk records of all time. Without this joint, Michael Jackson's adult solo career probably wouldn't have happened (i.e., "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", "Shake Your Body Down to the Ground")... and it wasn't just James or Sammy who gave Michael a little help. Marvin needs his respect, y'all.

The master's best live album........2004-08-03
I don't particularly like having the incomparable WHAT'S GOING ON songs crowded into one slightly rushed medley (these classics definitely deserve equal time), however the "Save The Children" finale does pack an unbeatable punch. The only real negative to the set is the horrendous "duets" medley, with the awful Florence Lyles butchering some truly great songs. PALLADIUM also contains the full-length 11 minute version of the hit "Got To Give It Up" (#1 Pop, #1 R&B), which is one of the greatest dance anthems to emerge from the disco area. The success of the single helped propel this disc all the way to #3 on the Hot 200, making it Marvin's second most commercially successful album behind LET'S GET IT ON..

Levon Helm and RCO AllStars Live at the Palladium NYC, NEw Years Eve 1977- Bringin' in a great 78........2006-05-15
I think this disc does a much better job than the original studio release (Levon Helm and the RCO AllStars) of allowing the talent of this band to shine through. The addition of some traditional blues tunes (Born in Chicago, Got My Mojo WOrkin, Goddnight Irene) and "Ophelia" from Levon's days in the Band add to the flavor of the original studio recording. The tunes from the original disc sound better in live setting, particularly "Milk Cow Boogie," "Blues so Bad" and "Sing, Sing Sing." Levon Helm and the RCO Allstars are a monster band live, yet they are able to play together as a cohesive unit. It is obvious that this band was about playing music together, leaving their egos at the door.
For some good-time music, buy this disc. Levon Helm Studios managed to pick an inaguaral "vault" release that packages a whole lot of soul into a small container. I can't wait to hear their next release!

Good Live Album from Keith and his Band.......2007-01-21
Four and a half stars.
Talk is Cheap.......2004-08-24
This live CD, recorded during the FABULOUS "Talk is Cheap" tour, primarily represents a second recording of the studio album (and a few great extras) with very appreciative crowd noise sandwiched between the songs. Nothing wrong with that, because these are songs that are MEANT to be played live - but the energy and production values of the original studio "Talk is Cheap" album is so extraordinary, this live album primarily speaks to Keith completists. I once read Keith questioned releasing this live album, but there were sooooooooo many bootlegs out of the winos live preformances, he felt his fans deserved a definitive version.
with a chaser, please.......2004-03-22
The Human Riff.......2003-08-12
On this raw, ragged live album, he is backed by his session drummer Steve Jordan, who keeps a good groove going but apparently has all the imagination of a turnip. He is Richards' songwriting partner, though, and that must count for something.
Excellent second guitarist Robert "Waddy" Wachtel is here as well, as is bassist Charley Drayton, keyboardist Ivan Neville (who plays some great blues-and-boogie piano), and a long-time Stones-ally, saxist Bobby Keys.
Keith Richards and the Winos tear through nine songs from Keith's first solo album, "Talk Is Cheap", as well as a few Stones-songs, including a harder-rocking rendition of "Connection" from "Between The Buttons". Richards' guitar playing is smouldering, he lays down a superb groove all along, and his rough, hoarse vocals are pure rock n' roll!
Highlights include a swinging, sax-enhanced "Too Rude", the #3 single off "Talk Is Cheap", "Take It So Hard", the magnificent, down and dirty blues, "Make No Mistake", Richards' signature tune "Happy", the smoky slow "Locked Away", and the tough, muscular riff-rockers "I Could Have Stood You Up" and "How I Wish". Everything is played with grit and determination, and "Live at the Hollywood Palladium" has that organic feel which the Rolling Stones have had trouble capturing since the mid-70s.
Keith Richards has the ability to rock like very few others, and he shows that on this fine live album. It's not excactly polished, but what do you expect from a live recording of Keith Richards and a band dubbed "the X-Pensive Winos"?

The basic Les Brown recording .......2007-05-21
A dance band for the ages.......2007-01-10
Featuring sophisticated arrangements and top-drawer soloists, such as Dave Pell (ts) and Ray Sims (trmb), Brown's band stands as an undersung assemblage whose music deserves prominent placement in the constellation of American music greats. The recordings pick up the background, on-floor electricity of the appreciative audience, who must have listened to--as much as danced to--this wonderful band.
A Great Recording.......2005-08-29
The sound quality of these cuts is outstanding. I bought the LP on the Coral label in 1956 and, even then, was amazed at the clarity of the monaural sound. Whoever the sound engineers were, they really knew what they were doing. This is worth mentioning because during this period of the fifties live concert recordings were an uncertain thing at best. Jazz aficionados may recall the poor quality of the 1955 Errol Garner "Concert By The Sea" recording and the fiasco that surrounded the taping of Duke Ellington's historic July 1956 Newport Jazz Festival appearance, whereby large portions of it had to be re-done later in a New York studio. But that's another story.
When this Les Brown engagement was taking place, nobody knew it but the big band era was rapidly drawing to a close. Within two years or less, Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis, Little Richard, Ray Charles and many others would usher in the rock n roll era and the music business would never be the same again.
So, from the twilight of an era, we have this magnificent recording to remind us what a big band full of great soloists could sound like. Dave Pell on tenor sax, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Ronnie Lang on alto sax and Ray Sims on trombone are just a few of the great players featured on these wonderful arrangements. But for me, overshadowing them all is the superb drumming of Jack Sperling. After you've enjoyed these cuts several times - and you will - devote some time to paying attention to Sperling's work. Understated and restrained, his drumming is clearly the driving force behind this band, as a good drummer must be. Brown and his musicians were obviously enjoying themselves during these sets, and you will too.
Les's Best.......2004-10-20

A "Live" Carpenter Album Performed in England.......2005-08-21
It is a delightful album and makes me wish I had seen the Carpenters perform live! They sing various long medleys of the songs from their career, with narration between by both Karen and Richard. The set sums up their careers in an entertaining fashion. My favorite track features Richard's Piano Picker followed by a lenghty drum solo by Karen, who was a marvelous drummer! She excels on this number, using several different drum sets, showing her incredible talent.
Yes, it's incredibly expensive, but for Carpenter fans, you will want this album! I suggest E-BAY for a used copy; one might be able to get the album for a better price there.

A Fine Live Concert!.......2003-11-27
This is a great concert and a must- have CD for all Carpenters fans out there! I highly recommend it along with their other live CD, "Live in Japan"!
Besides having been one of the greatest singers ever, Karen Carpenter was also one of the greatest drummers! She proved this with a fantastic instrumental medley that you have to hear to believe!
Richard Carpenter is one of the greatest pianists ever! Listen to him on "Warsaw Concerto" and be blown away!
This CD is a treat for all music lovers, as are all of the Carpenters CD's!

That tornado--Johnnie Ray !!! .......2006-05-17
Oh sure, this recording has the usual minor imperfections that a live recording usually has. For example, there is that "popping" sound whenever Johnnie sang too close to the microphone. But you know what--Who cares? It's great material performed passionately from the heart. In fact, the audience reacts so enthusiastically it's a miracle they let Johnnie ever leave the stage!
Despite the fact that this is a short performance coming in at just over 32 minutes long, you get the complete and unedited song set and Johnnie sings eleven songs. Of course, Johnnie sings the song he was well known for entitled "Cry;" but you also get a powerfully delivered rendition of "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" in addition to "As Time Goes By." I also enjoyed the song called "The Little White Cloud That Cried." Johnnie's song set ends with another dynamically delivered performance of "I'm Gonna Walk And Talk With My Lord." Awesome! Johnnie is not remembered the way he should be remembered for all his fine contributions to the arts.
The liner notes are excellent, too! There are pictures of record album covers and there's a sweet essay from the heart by Johnnie himself. You get four nice black and white photographs of Johnnie including one taken of him singing and playing the piano as he performed this song set at The Palladium. The liner notes also include a review by Jack Marshall of The New Musical Express about how Johnnie wowed them with POW! that night at The Palladium. Lyrics are not written out for us; but Johnnie sings so clearly that you won't need them.
In short, this CD is a magnificent recording of Johnnie Ray live in concert when he was really beginning to hit his stride. His performance is solid and electric; and the screaming young ladies in the audience are ample proof of that!
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Johnnie Ray who want to hear him as he sounded live in concert; fans of classic pop vocals and people who want an EXHILARATING introduction to the talents of Johnnie Ray. This one's a keeper! Enjoy!

THE BEST LATIN MUSCI HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-25
The Big 3 Palladium Orchestra is the bain-child of Machito's son Mario Grillo. It was decided to approach the Puente & Rodriguez families to represent the music of the Palladium era. Margaret Puente and Tito Rodriguez Jr. were delighted to offer their original charts for use, along with the Machito scores.
Joe Madera began writing augmented charts to enable the bigger group to perform these pieces of Americana Music History and the ball was now in motion. The Big 3 Palladium Orchestra was born.
'the most thrilling music by far came from a sensational, relatively new band, called the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra....The Big 3 already may rank as the most brilliant large Latin jazz ensemble this side of Havana.' - Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune
'Recorded live at the Blue Note Club, this group just sizzles. The original arrangements swing in a very sophisticated way mixing the old with the new. A great release, every aspect of the music on the album is sheer class with some real, tasty, jazzy solos...' The Beat
'the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra, with it's screaming horn section, frenzied rhythm section, and its high-octane, bone-crunching arrangements is, by far, the most hard-core tribute record I have heard in a long time. A guaranteed dance-club floor burner.'
