It's unfortunate that Terri Clark gained her highest chart debut with "Girls Lie Too," a hideously cartoonish song that perpetuates stereotypes about the sexes and, by its success, about country music fans. Clark, a Canadian tomboy in a rakish and attitudinal cowboy hat, has always played on her image as an independent female yearning for a relationship as strong as her personality. That worked well on a number of early songs, especially "Better Things to Do" and on the new "One of the Guys." But clearly she's yearned to expand her subject matter, and in recording songs co-written with Kim Richey, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Mary Chapin Carpenter (a live version of their "No Fear" appears here), she nurtured the questioning side of her inner singer-songwriter. Clark has never really fit any kind of niche, and one suspects she's now caught between trying to stay alive commercially and satisfying herself as an artist. Greatest Hits is a colorful road map to the first 10 years of her journey, even as she seems to be doubling back on certain stretches of that highway. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Kickin Canadian Country.......2007-06-13

This album is an excellent compiliation of Terri Clark tunes. This is excellent mainstream country. First off, Terri has a voice with an accent and has also a kind of rough [but not at all in a bad way] quality that is perfect for this kind of music. The instruments play country music but with a rockish edge at times when needed. Lots of good songs. Here they are:

Better Things to Do - a sassy tune telling a guy that she is over him and moved on

When Boy Meets Girl - a boy is about to discover love

Poor Poor Pitiful Me - good Terri take on the Zevon tune

Emotional Girl - good, fast. The singer tells a guy to realize she's got passion and he better be ready to handle it.

You're Easy on the Eyes - kinda gritty and a bit randy. The singer is physically attracted to a hot guy but is remembering that he is trouble otherwise.

Little Gasoline - singer is driving away from some junk in her past and is enjoying freedom.

I Wanna Do It All - uptempo number about living life full bore

Girls Lie Too - Once the listener accepts that this song is not meant to be taken seriously, then it's humorous. It's about women also making excusing and massaging guys' egos with little white lies at times. Not sexist, just joshing.

One of the Guys - singer isn't a pretty, fragile thing. She can hang out with the boys and do the "rough stuff" too.

Very good compilation album of contemporary female country. It helped me get into listening to more country in addtion to the rock and pop I glomed onto as a kid.

4 out of 5 stars A Decade of Terri Clark.......2006-07-28

Terri Clark is a four-time winner of Canadian country music's prestigious "Entertainer of the Year" award. Greatest Hits 1994-2004 is a retrospective of Terri's career and includes 14 of her biggest hits, making this a great album for any fan of country music. From the first song, "Better Things To Do," to the last, "No Fear," listening to this album is like following Clark along on her journey from her early start to the top of the country music charts.

5 out of 5 stars Guts, beauty, a cowgirl hat, and pure Raw talent!!.......2006-04-26

Terri Clark deffinately showed NO FEAR when it came to putting this cd together. Terri untimately shows that she can hang with ONE OF THE GUYS, with her tomboyish looks, and her guitar slinging, her sexy cowgirl hat that truely makes her EASY ON THE EYES! EVERTYIME I CRY, the heavy- hitting domestic violence song, Shows Terri's passion for womans rights. EMOTIONAL GIRL shows that Terri can be sensitive, as well as getting on with her life in BETTER THINGS TO DO, without saying POOR POOR PITIFUL ME (penned by the late/great Warren Zevon, also remade by the beautiful and talented Linda Ronstadt) shhhh, don't tell, Terri's version was much better. NOW THAT I FOUND this cd, I find that GIRLS LIE TOO, really? THAT I WANNA DO IT ALL, and I JUST WANNA BE MAD for a while. It didn't take A LITTLE GASOLINE, but alot of time and effort from Terri for each one of these beautifully presented songs. So IF I WERE YOU, I'd buy this cd. Before the next BOY MEETS GIRL.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Female Pop Singers of the Modern Era.......2007-04-02

Tina Arena is undoubtedly one of the best female pop singers of the modern era. Her stunning voice & vocal delivery are up there with the very best of the best. And to match this she has a large repertoire of top quality pop & adult contemporary songs. I, like many people, was always amazed that she never became a massive star in the USA. Even her home country Australia eventually turned its back on Tina - who knows why? But, she was smart & moved to a country (France) where her talent, artistry and professionalism would truly be appreciated. Anyway, this Greatest Hits collection is a must for any true Tina fan or anyone wishing to become one! My alltime favourite Tina song - "If I Was a River" - is adult contemporary music at its absolute best. 5/5.

5 out of 5 stars America - you don't know what you're missing..........2007-01-30

Like many reviewers, I have also wondered why Tina did not catch fire here in the USA. She has a magnificiently controlled voice, is a knockout to look at, and is a fantastic "live" performer as well. My only guess to her not breaking big in this country is the fact that right now what is "on the charts" is unfortunately not really geared towards artistry, but attitude. Sadly, when the radio programmers and owners look for the money, they have to play what is in vogue, and what is in vogue in the US right now (and for some years) is not necessarily anything that requires talent. One of the reasons Tina did not achieve what she deserved in the USA is that she was not seen or heard like she should have been. Europeans, Australians, Canadians, Japanese...they all know a good thing when they see and hear it, and Tina's success in those respective areas of the world prove it.

4 out of 5 stars Suggests That the US May Have Missed Out On Something.......2005-01-19

It's quite the travesty that more people didn't give Tina Arena a chance, at least stateside. She looked as though she might break back in '96, thanks to the crackerjack single "Chains", and follow-up "Show Me Heaven" was recorded specifically with US radio saturation in mind. Alas, like so many good things in life, it wasn't meant to be, and so success in Australia and later Europe had to suffice. It's a shame, as she possesses one of the more smashing voices in pop circles(as Sony's attempts to fashion her as the Australian Celine Dion amply attest to). Still, as compilations go, this particular one is quite stellar and reaffrims that Arena had far more in her beyond "Chains". Highlights include the aforementioned "Chains" and "Show Me Heaven", "Burn", "If I Was A River", a fantastic rendition of "I Want To Know What Love Is", as well as her recent, more dance-oriented material("Soulmate #9" and "Dare You To Be Happy"-the remix here shames the original). On the very miniscule downside, I was never much a fan of "Heaven Help My Heart" or "Now I Can Dance", and though "Symphony of Life" is a lovely, electronica-laden tune, Arena's hefty vocals don't mesh particularly well with that type of music(more suited to Dido or the like I'm afraid). Still, as a whole, this set outclasses alot of the assembly-line dreck that seems to be multiplying at an alarming rate nowadays. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Enough About Amber.......2005-01-08

I'm so sick of getting on any female diva message board or postings at all and seeing this guy writing about Amber. It's very obnoxious. Write about Amber at Amber's site or in comments about her album. I personally really like Amber's new album too, but stop.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Recommended CDs.......2004-12-25

Fans of Female Singer/Songwriters should definitely check out 2 New Releases: Tina Arena - Greatest Hits and Amber - My Kind of World. Though practically unknown in America, Tina is a Superstar in France and her native Australia. This Disc contains all of her hits, including the Diane Warren penned "If I Was a River" (recorded for the U.S. Version of "In Deep"). Amber's latest CD is "My Kind of World". Her first Single release "You Move Me" has already hit #1 at XM Radio. Although not a Greatest Hits release like Tina's CD, "My Kind of World" may as well be. It is packed with potential Singles. "Voodoo" is already being remixed as a Second Single Release for early 2005. And the Whitney Houston Meets Pat Benatar Power Ballad "Sacrificial Lamb" and the Pat Benatar-esque "Just Like That" are possible 3rd and 4th Singles. My advice to fans of Female Singer/Songwriters? Get BOTH Tina Arena "Greatest Hits" and AMBER "My Kind of World".
