Every parent's nightmare and every teenager's dream band, Marilyn Manson take no prisoners on their blistering and brutal Trent Reznor-produced debut. Aiming to shock and rock simultaneously, Portrait scores high marks in both arenas. Manson and his grand grimoire take Alice Cooper's tongue-in-cheek mix of glam and death rock to the nth degree with their vision of youth gone wild, personified on cuts like "Cake and Sodomy" and "Lunchbox," a schoolyard revenge fantasy gone horribly awry. One of the most original, hardest rocking albums recorded in the '90s, Portrait of an American Family is a hallmark of the industrial/metal genre, but not for those who are easily offended. --Gail Worley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Real Marilyn Manson Roots.......2007-06-06

POAAF is the most real album Manson has to offer. I mean I love Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood more than this album but they're all much too built up on storylines and his appearances. Portrait Of An American Family is without a doubt the real Manson, Brian Warner or whatever you want to call him. The album is the fruition of his first thoughts and questions on American life and it's warped daily routines. To me this is the first record that a musician has ever attacked what was never questioned before. Most notably Religion. A perfect example of this would be the dark, grinding song known as "Cake and Sodomy". A song in which Manson attacks the stereotypical religious southern, TV watching Christian; the lyrics richly inspired by Pat Robertson of the 700 Club (if you read his book you would know what I mean). While "Lunchbox" offers a more comical side of Marilyn as he takes the role of a frustrated and bullied school child who wishes to be a huge rock star, a song loosely based upon himself. "Get Your Gunn" (the first single) seems to be the most outstanding track for Portrait due ot it's well-written lyrics and imagery. None of the other songs stray away from the seeminglessly harmless childlike themes gone horribly awry ALA "Organ Grinder", "Dope Hat", "Wrapped In Plastic", "Sweet Tooth" and "My Monkey". Comical horror and sound distortions are huge components in this album. POAAF delves into the warped mind of an aspiring rock star (as of Manson's stance in the Music world in 1994) who took on the topics never once opposed and pushed them to the limits of Society's buttons. Portrait is an early deep and brooding industrial gem. Remember without this early 90's classic, Manson and his future work would cease to exist.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could want...from a debut.......2007-02-15

Upon first listen I thought this would be a great album to put on at Halloween night. From audio of Bud Dwyer's suicide to Marilyn's haunting rendition of the infamous Willy Wonka nightmare boat speech it's sure to make you atleast a little uneasy. As I began to listen to it more I started to notice what a great record this is. Great hooks and riffs from the great Daisy Berkowits, Marilyn's iconic voice, and enough political commentary to make Neil Young feel inadequate, this album has everything you could want...from a debut. If you're looking for Marilyn Manson's more industrial sound this is not the place to find it. If you're looking for a band with a raw sound and great energy then this is the album for you. Some highlights include "Cake and Sodomy" which is the ultimate example of Manson's power, "Lunchbox" is a Manson classic and I wouldn't be surprised if you felt like beating someone after giving this song a listen, "Get Your Gunn" is one that always has creeped me out, mostly because of the audio clips of Bud Dwyer's suicide which have never failed at making me feel like a frightened turtle. All in all this is mpre a piece of art than simply an album. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Here's where it all began...definitely a solid album.......2006-11-30

This used to be my least favorite release due to its lackluster production quality in comparison to releases like Antichrist and Mechanical. But you've got to consider the time, 1994. Grunge was dead and something dark and more innovative in music was starting to form. Portrait was the beginning of this change. Its a great album, not to be taken too seriously. It shows Mansons roots, his youthful rage, not yet completely clouded by his own nihilism.
Its punky metal with industrial fuzz all around the edges. From start to finish its a solid album, catchy, enjoyable with enough hooks to keep your average listener interested. Compared to a lot of other bands & albums that came out around that time, Portrait sets the standard. Quality songwriting, overall structure and a valid message delivered with a candy coated fist to the face.
Just the beginning of Mansons legendary career, and definitly worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars Great American Music.......2003-04-18

I originally purchased this for the Ruggles, but I'm very pleased to have recordings the other composers. Wonderful cd.

4 out of 5 stars Some stunning lesser known american pieces.......2001-07-30

The standouts are the Harris organ and brass piece, available nowhere else that I know of. Organic development of motifs to a massive climax. The two Ives pieces are also firstrate. "From the steeples to the mountains" lives up to Ives' description: And then the rocks began to shout. "Let there be light" sounds as though it could have led to his parting ways with the church he was organist for in the early 1900s.

The other pieces are pretty minor. The Carl Ruggles piece is interesting.

Every once and a while I find a CD that I just can't quit listening to and this is the one right now. I love it. I have been listening to Glenn since 1967, this is the first time I've heard Holly. She is magnificent and together with her dad WOW!

      5 out of 5 stars Angel Voices.......1999-11-27

This is a great CD. Holly Yarbrough has a sweet pure voice, just like her dad. His voice is as strong and pure as it was the first time I heard him, over 30 years ago. I've been a fan since the early 1960's and love everything he does. The songs are contemporary and accompanied by wonderful music. It's one of those albums you like the first time you hear it and will want to play it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit from Pink.......2003-01-04

Pink is a mega superstar and her latest single just proves it. Family Portrait is a touching song about fighting parents and the fear of having them split or divorce. The music in the background stays steady but in this case it works for the song and isn't noticable enough that it will irritate. Pink delivers the verses in such a way that it sounds like she'll cry any moment. Perfect for a song that is emotional and heartfelt. You should really listen to this and it's bound to be a hit.

        2. Suite No. 2 from Family Portrait

        Album Description

Don Ray was born, reared and educated in Southern California, where he took his B.A. at U.C.L.A. and his M.A. from California State University. He joined the CBS-TV Music Staff in 1956 and remained there as Music Supervisor until retirement in 1986. While there, he composed scores for G.E. Theater, Gunsmoke, Twilight Zone, CBS Movie-of-the-Week, and Hawaii Five-O, the latter bringing an Emmy nomination for best dramatic score. On leaving CBS, he turned to writing concert music. He has also been active in teaching film scoring techniques. His Piano Concerto is in four movements, employs the standard symphony orchestra and lasts about 40 minutes. It was begun in Dublin in 2000 and completed in Los Angeles in 2001. Family Portrait, Suite No. 2 contains a series of character studies and events in the family of the composer's grandparents who homesteaded a farm in the American Northwest around 1900. This suite is drawn from the original work which has thirteen movements.

        5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-07-12

Returns Miracle Legion to the spare, alt.folk-pop sound of "Me & Mr. Ray", after the electrified and more "full" sound of "Drenched".

Great songs as always, great album,,,,,,highly recommended.

        4 out of 5 stars a little frantic.......2001-07-05

I was a big fan of Miracle Legion's first two records, The Backyard EP and the Surprise, Surprise, Surprise LP. I never agreed with the R.E.M. comparisons. Mark Mulcahy's voice and lyrics bear no resemblance to Michael Stipe's nor Mr. Ray's guitar style to Mr. Buck's. But I guess that ML never got the commerical success that R.E.M. eventually did and Mulcahy couldn't keep the core band together. I didn't like the relatively stripped down sound of Me and Mr. Ray, nor did I like the stab at commericial acceptance that was Drenched.

A Portrait of A Damaged Family is sort of a return to form for ML. But I still find the arrangements a bit crowded and sometimes unnecessarily hurried. There was a spareness and langour to the early records that allows the melancholy of the lyrics to sink in. In the later records Mulcahy and Mr. Ray seem to be trying to be more of a rock band with mixed success. Mulcahy's voice, too, seems strained by the pace. Exceptions to this tendency include "Gone to Bed at 21" and "K.K.M. (Korean Kissing Machine)" and the really beautiful "Homer". The latter, with its look back at a sadness-tinged childhood, would not have been out of place on the first two ML records. Other stand-outs on this CD are "Accidentally On Purpose", "Say I Had A Lovely Time" and "Please".

I recommend that people buy this record because Mark Mulcahy is a talent that should be allowed to keep making records. There is a lots of good music on this CD and it is definitely worth seeking out the earlier vinyl too, which you can still occasionally run across in used record stores in New England.

        5 out of 5 stars Great unknowns!.......1999-07-06

There is so much soul in this recording. Seasoned, yet unknown, these songwriters will forever be Rhode Island and Connecticut's best kept secret. Please, make more.

        Product Description

Here we have an international collection of bassoon music, recorded in Edvard Grieg's house. The highly original wind music of Maslanka is surely known to you through his many releases on Albany, and this recent work is a significant contribution to the bassoon literature. James Lassen, born in Montana, has family roots in Scandinavia. Active in jazz and classical circles, he currently lives in Bergen, Norway and is co-principal bassoonist in that city's Symphony Orchestra, alongside principal Per Hannevold. Lassen's work shows the influence of special techniques he learned while playing the Japanese shakuhatchi and bamboo flutes. Oivind Westby, a trombonist and arranger, has composed a delightful work that shows influences from British light music. Per Hannevold has been with the Bergen Symphony from 1979 and is a member of the Bergen Wind Quintet. His performances have taken him all over the world and he is recognized as a preeminent authority on bassoon technique. This is a wonderful disc for wind specialists and those looking for something out of the ordinary.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Bassoon Recital by Per Hannevold.......2005-11-26

Per Hannevold is one of the world's master bassoonists. He has long been the principal bassoon of the Bergen, Norway, Philharmonic, in Grieg's hometown; in fact, this recital was recorded at Troldhaugen, Grieg's home in Bergen. He is also a member of the well-regarded Bergen Wind Quintet whose CDs I've reviewed favorably here. I've known his playing for nigh on fifteen years because he is the principal bassoonist in the Festival Orchestra every summer at the Aspen Music Festival. I have never heard him play anything other than beautifully and with keen musicianship.

He and the Bergen Wind Quintet recorded all three of David Maslanka's wind quintets, and when Per asked him for something he could play, Maslanka wrote the Sonata for Bassoon and Piano, dedicating it to Per, who gave its première in Bergen, and the first American performance in Austin, Texas with the pianist here, the distinguished Torleif Torgersen. In four movements, the sonata has two movements based on Bachian (but original) chorales. Maslanka explains in his booklet notes that he has made a deep study of Bach chorales as a way of finding his own melodic and harmonic voice. Maslanka is surely one of the best inventors of memorable, singing melodies writing today. His music is highly valued especially in the world of wind instrument players, largely because much of his work has featured combinations of winds. The Sonata does not disappoint. It not only has rhythmic interest throughout but it has some absolutely wonderful melodies underpinned by original-sounding harmonies (some of which may owe something to the sweet-tart harmonies of Prokofiev). For me the high point is the fourth movement, which is something like a Prokofiev toccata at a hoedown. The bassoon, playing the part of the fiddler, is ferociously virtuosic (come to think of it, so is the pianist's part) with especial emphasis on lightning-fast staccato playing. Goodness! My only criticism of the sonata itself is that at times the piano accompaniment is a bit less than striking, with rushing arpeggios and occasional chugging harmonies that could have been more 'pianistic.' (Forgive this old pianist for complaining!)

Oivind Westby is a Norwegian trombonist-composer whose 'Portrait of a Family,' for bassoon and string ensemble, is just that. In five movements -- 'The Father,' 'The Mother,' 'The Firstborn Son', 'The Dancing Daughter,' and 'The Baby Brother' -- the bassoon is the narrator, describing for us the energetic, can-do father, the melancholic but loving mother, the restless older son (whose 5/8 meter seems to be indicating, possibly, that he has trouble focusing his attention anywhere for very long), the graceful daughter dancing a slow jazz waltz, and the baby brother who clearly is into everything and practically bouncing off the walls. A very engaging set of character pieces. The Bergen Chamber Ensemble give Hannevold expert support.

James Lassen, the composer of 'Strange Interlude No. 3 for Bassoon and Piano,' is Hannevold's co-principal bassoon in Bergen. An American of Scandinavian descent, he has been in Norway since 1996. He wrote this work for the annual Hannevold/Miller Bassoon Symposium held annually in Bergen. In two movements, 'Strange Interlude' is eclectic, mixing such things as gestures gleaned from Japanese bamboo flute improvisations, rock harmonies and rhythms, and American jazz (including a startling unison bop riff for bassoon and piano). Along the way we get a modal canon and some stomping country music. And we get another breathtaking display of Hannevold's virtuosity.

All in all, this is a marvelous disc. I've rarely had it out of my CD player since I got it, except for when I transferred it to my car's CD player while I ran a number of errands -- I had to sit in the post-office parking lot because I just had to hear the conclusion of 'The Baby Brother.'

This is a disc not just for bassoonists and bassoon aficionados, but for those who appreciate tuneful contemporary chamber music. Nothing here to stretch the ears, perhaps, but plenty to feed one's need for beauty.

After the events of last year, home has never been more important. Even the home of your memory. This recording has all the emotions of family; laughing, crying, loving but without the schmaltz. Christmas Card is a message to all the people here and gone that we will remember every year when the weather gets a bit colder, you can smell firewood burning in the air, and your heart is a bit softer.
