Editorial Reviews

Chicago Tribune, The Inc Column, November, 1994
And, it finally feels like "Christmas in Chicago" when you start to hear this gem on the radio by former Chicago crooner and songwriter, Michael Poss…

From the Artist
"Christmas in Chicago" was the start of my professional recording career when I took a chance and released the CD Single in 1992 to all of the local radio stations in Chicago. The fates have been very kind to me over the years, because "Christmas in Chicago" can now be heard on four continents, broadcasted especially for all of the "transplanted Chicagoans" living in cities around the world. I hope my song will bring back warm memories of your own experiences in one of the most beautiful and friendly cities in the United States.

Please remember that portions of proceeds continues to benefit pediatric AIDS research, until medical science has found a 100% cure for the HIV-virus. I hope you'll enjoy listening to my song "Christmas in Chicago", and that it hopefuly reminds you to make an annual donation to your favorite charities.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque- Greatest Hits.......2007-01-09

This is my second purchase of the CD - the first one got scratched. I usually have the music on in the background when I am at my computer. I also use it for background music when working with high school mathematics students in schools. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Any classical music lover can't be without it !.......2000-04-10

If you're a serious classical collector, this is a must have. Of course, even if you don't like classical but want to give it a try, this is also for you. The Baroque period was an important time in the development of music. Before Baroque, music carried only one melody or rhythim. With the arrival of the Baroque Guys: Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, music was able to have two rhythms go on at the same time. Without it, modern music would'nt exist. The music you will hear in this cd may be a bit slow but it is still very good. Oh, and may I add that the cover and the cd itself looks really classy, having a shiny jade color that makes it look like it costs a million dollars. The sound quality is very good and rich-sounding. Hey- the "Masterpiece Theatre" theme is here. I've always wanted it. It's track #1 called a "Rondeau" by Mouret. The Hallelujah choir is to be commended and the trumpet concertos, organ music and violin and string pieces are equally impressive. Some of the works are very familiar. In fact, listening to it, I recalled having listened to them before. This is great music to hear while doing assignments or reading. It has the "college" feel to it. I don't know. Maybe because in the movies you hear those trumpet tunes play whenever they show a university . Anyways, it's great.

5 out of 5 stars That's my most favorite baroque music.......1999-10-01

Every track in this CD is very famous and well known. I love it

5 out of 5 stars A fine edition of 'Messiah'.......2007-07-11

Previously we had Robert Shaw's rendition of 'Messiah.' When we made the transition to CDs away from vinyl, I looked for Shaw, but found this instead. I am very pleased with it and recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit for Solti!.......1999-05-20

Solti understands how Handel loved opera. This performance is dramatic and lyric with all the full sound of the modern orchestra. The soloists excel and the CSO chorus can't be matched. A must even for those who have a Messiah or two.

Album Description

A new recording by the Chicago-based Schola Cantorum of St. Peter The Apostle, directed by J. Michael Thompson. This collection is a testimony to the shared Christian faith of both the Western and Eastern Churches. Homage is paid to the thousands of Polish and Ukrainian Catholics who, despite hardship and difficulty, preserved their faith and heritage in their new home.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous addition to the Christmas CD repertoire.......2004-02-26

This album has some of the most beautiful--and beautifully executed--Christmas carols I've ever heard, and I collect carols as a hobby. My personal preference would have been not to intersperse choral pieces with instrumental ones, and in fact to do the entire album a capella; but I just skip over the cuts I don't care for and let the ones I do like transport me to another world.

[On another note: J. Michael Thompson wrote one of the two (current) reviews of this CD, and apparently forgot to give it any stars. Someone at Amazon apparently took that to mean NO stars and averaged out the five stars of the other review with no stars and came up with 2 1/2 stars! Duh? It is obvious from what he wrote that Thompson heartily endorses HIS OWN work. Wake up, somebody at Amazon, and please correct this.]

You gotta have at least one recording of this most Russian of piano concertos played by a Russian pianist, right? The fact is, most of the greatest ones have not been by Russians, perhaps reflecting the history of the concerto itself, which was rejected by Anton Rubinstein, its Russian dedicatee, and premiered by the German conductor/pianist Hans von Bulow--in Boston of all places. Gilels is the exception that proves the rule, however, for here is a super interpretation by one of Russia's best pianists. Having Fritz Reiner and Chicago on hand to handle the accompaniment virtually guarantees the best possible results from all concerned, but let's give Gilels his due. It's a great recording. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Tchaik's Piano Concerto is the most famous and finest work in the genre..........2007-04-24

...It is passionate, full of all the torment and a Russian brand of sadness that is characteristic of Tchaik's talent. The melodies are beautiful; so much so, that they are constantly being used in movies and popular songs ("Tonight We Love"). The second movement is especially lovely and dream-like.

This version of Tchaik's PC#1 was the first one I ever owned (on LP). I am glad to now own it CD. Gilels is passionate and forceful; Reiner's Chicago Sym. Orch. glimmers as always. The "Nutcracker" is also outstanding; like "Swan Lake" or "Sleeping Beauty" colorful and melodic. Again, Reiner, does not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Presence of a piano titan!.......2006-08-27

The presence of Emil Gilels was always be synonymous of remarkable interpretative solvency. Although his approach was a mite cold, he had an overall concept of the score and far beyond you were agree or not with his approaches, there was a lot of bulletproof honesty and mercurial conviction that we have to acknowledge.

This version of the First Piano Concerto of Tchaikovsky remains among one of his best achievements ever recorded. Genuine expressiveness, sheer pianism, fluid phrasing and exemplary tune are one the major virtues of this performance.

        Highly recommended. .

5 out of 5 stars Thin, brittle sound ruins the ocncerto, but the Nutcracker Suite is superb.......2006-01-19

Generaly speaking, RCA's Living Stereo is a guarantee of sonic quality, but this 1955 Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto sounds thin and glassy--it's by far the worst I've ever heard from this source. It's enough to disqualify the perfomrance for me, but Gilels is a lion at the keyboard. His part is fiery and exciting. Reiner, unfortunately, is stiff and uninterested throughout; tthe second movement lacks the slightest romance or tenderness, and the hectic tempo in the last movement is not so much thrilling as rudely impatient. Too bad, given Gilels' great contribution.

The Nutcracker Suite carries us into a different world. The sonics from 1959 suddenly come alive--nothing could be moee thrilling--and Reiner conducts with everything he's got. This isn't a mre filler--we get 40 min. of the most spirited, precise playing imaginable from the CSO, and the inner life that Reiner communicates shows how off form he was in the concerto. I once took five versions of the Waltz of the Flowers and played them blind for some friends--I didn't know which version was which, either--and unanimously we picked Reiner's performance as the best, along with Igor Markevitch's on a Testament reissue. Five stars for a great performace.

        5 out of 5 stars Nearly flawless.......2004-07-04

I have 8 recordings of Tchaikovsky's 1st by Gilels; I would say this one ranks in Gilels' top 3 (of his recorded performances). The orchestral accompaniment Gilels' receives from Reiner and the Chicago is better than first-rate (if that is possible!).
One of the previous reviewers mentioned distracting tape splicings, but they are hardly noticeable, even on high-end equipment and unforgiving headphones. Of the easily available Gilels' recordings of the 1st, buy this one! Gilels certainly eclipses Cliburn and Horowitz in this work (Richter isn't on the map).

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling performance, but an audio quality nightmare........2003-12-31

This is one of the great performances of the Tchaikovsky concerto. The playing is absolutely thrilling and breathtaking! This is one of my favorite performances of the concerto along with Cliburn, Horowitz, and Rubinstein. The sound of this CD is a different story. There are many glitches in sound of the concerto where the pitch suddenly changes. Anyone who will be bothered by this should avoid it. It is very distracting, but I refuse to let it get in the way, and I wouldn't give this CD anything but 5 stars for the performance.

Maestro Salamunovich does a superb job of blending the Chorale in an unbelievable combination of tones with superlative diction. The great organs and symphonies of the world are something to be experienced, but Maestro Salamunovich brings expression of the music from a brilliantly-tuned instrument of voices and instruments. O Magnum Mysterium is a piece which one must listened.

5 out of 5 stars Particular interest in the song, "Sweet Little Jesus Boy.".......1998-10-21

Please note that Sweet Little Jesus Boy is not, as presented, a "Traditional" song. The composer is Robert Hunter MacGimsey, who wrote the song on Christmas Eve in New York City when he observed how the celebration of the birth of Jesus had degraded into shameless drunkedness and commercialism, with the message of His ministry all but forgotten. He went to his apartment and began writing a lament: Sweet Little Jesus Boy, we didn't know you come to save us, Lord, look how we treated you...Our eyes was blind, we couldn't see, we didn't know who you was. My name is Glen Stockton. Bob MacGimsey was my uncle. Throughout his life he wrote hundreds of songs based on the old Negro style, including Shadrach, Jonah and the Whale, Jeri Jericho, Daniel in the Lion's Den, Down to the River, Were You There When They Crucified My Lord, and Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen. If you have ever heard genuine old Negro spirituals, most likely they were songs written and published by Bob MacGimsey. He passed away in 1979; his 100th birthday would have been September 7, 1998. He was also known as the world's greatest whistler, able to whistle in 3-part harmonies with perfect pitch. Most celebrated artists of the 1920's to 1940's sang his songs, and millions heard him whistle on NBC radio during that period. He worked at the Walt Disney Studios on the movie, "Song of the South," and was the whistling heard in many of the Disney classic animated features.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the soloist singer set...........2006-12-21

I've been living with this CD for a few days now and while I think it's a valuable addition, I wouldn't use it even as a primary 'highlights' cd. (For that you're better off with the highlights CD featuring John Shirley-Quirk, Felicity Palmer, Raymond Leppard, English Chamber Orchestra, and Felicity Palmer (Audio CD - 2003)- ASIN: B00006L9RR).

It's best to use this as a soloist review cd. If you're singing one of the solo parts, use it as a guide for phrasing/pacing except as noted below.

Other: The decca recording transfers are very good and help keep this at 3 stars.

"The trumpet shall sound" cut is quite good, nice tempo, one weak note on the entrance to the chorus repeat holds it back slightly.

        * "For unto us a child is born" must have been sung while the Kentucky Derby was on...WAY too fast. This sounds more ridiculous on repeated hearings.

3 out of 5 stars In Deed a "Dream" Messiah, Except..........2006-05-22

With one glaring exception, this "Dream Cast" recording is an excellent collection of highlights from Handel's Messiah, containing both modern- and period-instrument recordings. The performances of the "dream team" soloists are excellent, and not just the women, but also the men. For the female voices, I particularly enjoyed: Arleen Auger (I know that my Redeemer liveth), Anne Sofie von Otter (O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion) and Leontyne Price (He shall feed his flock), with Joan Sutherland also good (Rejoice greatly o daughter of Zion), but Kiri Te Kanawa (There were sheperds abiding) perhaps seeming disaffected. For the male voices it was great from start to finish with Anthony Rolfe-Johnson (Comfort ye my people), Jerry Hadley (Every valley shall be exalted), Charles Daniels (Behold and see) and Robert Hale (The trumpet shall sound), but with Bryn Terfel (Why do the nations) perhaps seeming light.

The one exception? For Unto Us a Child is Born sung at high speed. Les Musiciens de Louvre (whoever they are) sound like chipmunks singing at the old LP 78 speed. They seem in a race to see who can finish singing first, without any meaning or phrasing, like juveniles in a race thru' their rosary beads. This is a shame, because next to the Hallelujah chorus, this is the most important part of the Messiah.

The orchestral playing by the English Baroque with Gardiner, the English Consort with Trevor Pinnock, and the Gabrieli Players with McCreesh was outstanding. I especially liked the clear trumpet playing of the Gabrieli with Hale singing "The trumpet shall sound." I also enjoyed the Hallelujah chorus by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields with Neville Marriner. Altho' I usually like a modern, massed-strings sound, this smaller ensemble under Marriner was very pleasing to my ears. And given my bias I liked the performances of the large symphony orchestras under Solti and Davis too.

So this is in deed a "dream" collection, except for the French chipmnunks on the second most important part of the Messiah.
