Customer Reviews:
It was an impulse buy..........2007-05-13
excellent.......2007-04-28
Bought for Mom, but I enjoyed a few songs myself!.......2007-04-26
Great Sound.......2007-04-14
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.
"We Were Alone And . . . I'm Singing This Song For You" .......2007-04-13
'Cause my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and . . .
I was singing this song for you." ~ A Song For You ~ Words & Music by Leon Russell
"Karen and I turned out to be the number one American-born hit makers of the 1970s and to date, with successes in every decade following our debut, our worldwide sales have topped 100 million units. Not too shabby for a pair of siblings from middle-class suburbia, who at first were more interested in listening to music than performing it." ~ Richard Carpenter, Liner Notes - June 2005 ~
Where were you when the Carpenters were so sensational and their songs were hitting the airwaves almost every hour? Where were you when their albums were selling like hotcakes?
Karen's vocal artistry is a pearlescent beauty full of luster, it's almost impossible not to be swept away by it and Richard has the exceptional creativity as a pianist, arranger, composer and conductor. With their extraordinary talents combined, they paved the way to many of their bestselling albums that contain their all-time hit songs. This 2-CD-set, "Carpenters: Gold" is a compilation of their most remarkable recordings - forty of their most-loved songs of all-time. My only concern is why an achingly beautiful song "I Can Dream, Can't I?" is not in this compilation. It would have been perfect if this favorite song of mine is included.
There are so many nice songs from this gold collection but the ones that particularly appeal to me are the following:
Disc One:
"We've Only Just Begun," "This Masquerade," "Superstar," "Rainy Days And Mondays," "Let Me Be The One," "Maybe It's You," "Reason To Believe," It's Going To Take Sometime This Time," There's A Kind Of Hush" "Only Yesterday" and "California Dreamin'."
Disc Two:
"A Song For You," "I Won't Last A Day Without You," "They Long To Be Close To You," "I Just Fall In Love Again," "Ticket To Ride," "Trying To Get The Feeling Again," "Yesterday Once More," "For All We Know" and of course "Merry Christmas Darling."
"Karen's Theme" is also a favorite of mine. It's a charming instrumental piece showcasing not only Mr. Carpenter's piano skills but also his creativity in composing remarkable music. He wrote the opening melody used for the biopic "The Karen Carpenter Story" in 1989, and he completed the melody, arranged and recorded this beautiful piece in late 1996 for his album Richard Carpenter: Pianist, Arranger, Composer, Conductor that was released in March of 1997 by A & M Records.
The above-mentioned songs are so powerful that they can penetrate your ears down to your heart to forever reside in there. They also symbolize an emotion gently and tenderly unfolding like the love growing in your heart.
You will most definitely love these CDs not only for the perfect set of songs but also for its 23-pages CD booklet with self-written Liner Notes by Mr. Carpenter plus the track listing with brief information of each song.
A heartwarming treasure.

20 track compilation featuring the best of the Carpenters, including 7 top ten singles. Remastered under the personal supervision of Richard CarpenterCustomer Reviews:
An excellent compilation.......2003-10-12
They recorded plenty of original songs but some of their biggest hits were covers. Close to you is a Bacharach-David song, originally recorded by Dionne Warwick, but her version was not released as a single. Please Mr Postman was a huge American success for the Marvelettes (and was covered by the Beatles on one of their early albums). Jambalaya is an old Hank Williams song, while Ticket to ride is a Beatles classic.
Of the original songs, Top of the world was never originally intended to be a single. However, Lynn Anderson covered the song and had a major country hit with it. She might have had a pop hit, too, but the Carpenters wisely decided to release their own version.
The strangest song here is Calling occupants of interplanetary craft. Whether you like it or not, it demonstrates that Richard and Karen were always trying to do something different.
There are so many classics here including For all we know, We've only just begun, Rainy days and Mondays, Goodbye to love, Only yesterday, Yesterday once more and I won't last a day without you. You can't get all the great Carpenters songs on a single CD but the songs here are all excellent. Among the omissions are Hurting each other, Sweet sweet smile and All you get from love is a love song, but if those were included, others would have to be left out.
If you only want a single CD of Carpenters music, this is a good one to choose.
More perfection from The Carpenters.......2001-05-25

A terrific, yet strange, collection.......2003-12-31
Disc one is the collection called GOLD, as released in Europe in 2000. Nothing new or different on it, just a great collection of 20 of their biggest hits. Interestingly, while this CD/DVD set is a Japanese release, the Japanese version of GOLD differs from this version.
Disc two is the CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT album, first released in 1978 but presented in its 1996 remix here. It's exactly the same as disc one in the CHRISTMAS COLLECTION, right down to the printing on the disc itself.
Disc three is the DVD. It's exactly the same as the U.S. GOLD DVD (which was exactly the same as the earlier YESTERDAY ONCE MORE videotape). However, this is a region 2 DVD, meaning it will not play in region 1 players, as we have in the U.S.
The collection does not contain much by way of liner notes or photos. There is a separate booklet that includes all the song titles and lyrics and a lot of stuff written in Japanese, but within the package itself is only a simple insert with a bare minimun of information.
For the American buyer, this is really an item only for the completists, as all the songs/remixes have been heard before, and the DVD isn't playable here.

Released at the height of the Carpenters' popularity in the early '70s, A Song for You spawned five hit singles. Its title track by Leon Russell somewhat surprisingly wasn't one of them given that it's probably Russell's best-known song and later became a country hit for Willie Nelson. Two of the album's most successful songs, the No. 1 smash "Top of the World" and the Top 10 hit "Goodbye to Love," were cowritten by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis; most of the record's other material came from outside sources, including "I Won't Last a Day Without You" (Paul Williams/Roger Nichols), "Hurting Each Other" (Peter Udell/Gary Geld) and "It's Going to Take Some Time" (Carole King/Toni Stern). --Peter BlackstockCustomer Reviews:
