When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03

It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30

Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

5 out of 5 stars What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

5 out of 5 stars Canuck Brass' Salute to the States.......2004-03-03

CBrass has for some years now been one of the premiere brass units in the world. Having seen them twice in person, they are true showmen and ambassadors for their country, their music and instruments.

Here is a CD that is needed in our time: a collection of patriotic, good ole' American music.

This is 4th of July clap your hands firework watching music at its best. In fact, that is exactly what listening to this collection does for me: it takes me to the excellent Greenfield Village at Henry Ford's annual 4th Fireworks Concert.

This is good stuff, well done by early CBrass.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2002-01-29

The Canadian Brass never fail to please, and this CD really lives up to that reputation. Even with the added orchestra, the songs never get bogged down or unevenly weighted. This was one of the first CB CD's I bought several years ago, and still one of my favourites of theirs.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2000-10-24

This cd is a lot of fun to listen to, mainly because of the entirely too impressive trumpet playing. While the quintet may be a bit trumpet heavy, it does not detract from music in this corny, showy style. It is a lot of fun to listen to, and I highly recommend it to those who love brass music.

Not long ago, Archeophone Records gave us the first CD of Billy Murray songs, and his fans, the few of us there are, were ecstatic. So imagine, at 1/3 the price, an album with 15 songs Archeophone didn't use. yes there are duplications, but that's a small price to pay for more of this first great American pop star. Even one of the duplicates isn't an exact copy--"Casey Jones," which I learned as a kid, and which I could hear a thousand times. it's such a good song the great Alan Sherman did a parody of it in the '60s. This version of it is quite different from the one on the Archeophone disc. "Mother Hasn't Spoke to Father Since," and "I'm Afraid to Come Home in the Dark," show us married life in 1910 isn't too different from married life now! Dr. Demento played "Casey Jones," "Little Old Ford," and "Get out and Get Under," in the '70s, along with other Murray songs that may never be released on CD's. but this one, like its predecessor, is one an oldtime music fan must get hold of.

A very poor recording of the Yankee Doodle Dandy soundtrack. Sounds as if the person making the recording put a single microphone up against speakers while he or she was playing the video at home.

5 out of 5 stars Stand Up And Salute The Flag.......2001-12-27

When I listen to this recording I feel impelled to jump to my feet and sing along. Some of the best sounds the musicians of our U.S. military bands have produced. Jimerson's renditions are unsurpassed!

5 out of 5 stars Ed McMahon Was Right!.......2001-11-11

After I heard the music from this CD at the Ed McMahon Show in Branson, Missouri, I bought it. This has to be the best recording of patriotic music I've ever heard. The singers are Metropolitan Opera material and the band clearly employs many of the best bandsmen in the U.S. Armed Services.

3 out of 5 stars Middle of the road........2001-11-04

The American National Military Band is great. The singing is awful. It would have been much better to have remove the singing and just have an instrumental CD. This is a 5 star CD with 5 star music but the singer drops it to 3 stars. Would have been 1 star if there weren't a few well done instrumental songs in it.

      4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2006-03-20

A really nice selection of American patriotic music from the Revolution to the onset of the Civil War. The performances are excellent. It includes some of the best work, including his patriotic anthem Chester, by the outstanding New England choral composer William Billings.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow........2001-12-19

I just got this CD in the mail -- bought for a friend who is a new citizen. Thought I'd give it a listen first. Wow. I own a fair amount of 18th century popular and choral music, and a few Boston Camerata discs. This beauty is going straight to the top of my list of favorites. Lovely, very musical. I agree with the previous review that this disc captures the history, but I want to recommend the recordings as music, too.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album For Historic Music Fans.......2000-08-09

This is by far the best recordings of historic American music that I have come across. The arrangements are beautiful for all the songs. Chester and Dormant are my two favorites. In addition, the information and background for all the songs is given in the booklet. I found this to be very helpful and interesting. If you are sick of hearing historic songs being butchered by banjos, dulcimers and mandolines, and want to hear the real thing, than this is the album for you. I love this record!

      Album Description

The Bassoon Brothers first album "Wanted — The Bassoon Brothers" was called "Just plain hilarious" by the Seattle Times., and "a sort of all-bassoon version of the Canadian Brass" by Audiophile Auditions. It quickly became one of Crystal's best-selling albums and very high on Amazon's sales list. This second CD is at least as entertaining, with riotous takes on well-known classical, popular, and movie tunes. The quartet is the bassoon section of the Oregon Symphony in Portland and are on a mission to save the 'oons from extinction. Bassoon, contrabassoon, tenoroon, and tromboon — all are now a little safer.

This is just a terrifically fun, inventive recording, featuring world-class performers playing truly innovative and interesting arrangements of a wide variety of music, from the cute and fun to the sublime and serious. You gotta get this CD!

Sometimes, even bassoonists need to be a little silly, and this fits the bill!

4 out of 5 stars Review of Captured! The Bassoon Brothers.......2006-08-01

Great CD with some very interesting instruments you don't hear everyday. If you like the bassoon, you'll like the uniqueness of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars This album Captured my attention.......2005-03-02

Once while on a road trip, I found a radio station playing an instrumental rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Three Little Maids" like I had never heard it before.

When the DJ said the unusual version had been performed by the Basoon Brothers I knew I had to find it.

The whole album just kept me giggling while it charmed me with it wonderful musicality. Well worth owning.

      5 out of 5 stars It's..............2003-02-18

An easy five stars to "Captured!" by The Bassoon Brothers. In fact, five stars to any bassoon playing that has a pulse. The mix of tune choices and the arrangements are exquisite. Who doesn't love "Fanfare For The Common Man"? I was listening to "My Girl" in the bath, and what with the singing and dancing, slopped water all over. I love "Send In The Clowns" and "Purple Haze" and the "Louie Louie" with the sly Glenn Miller and Sly references.

It reminds me of much more than just Spike Jones and Schickele. Willem Breuker Kollektief, the World Saxophone Quartet, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Don Cherry, Carla Bley, and Sun Ra spring to mind. And the use of the all-too often neglected bassoons reminds me of James Carter's recent resuscitation of the nearly DOA bass saxophone on "Chasin' The Gypsy."

It's a treasure. And it only serves to remind that Mr. Eubanks is the premier bassoonist in the world and an arranger with few equals. I have not heard all of the dreary rehashes of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring"; maybe I've heard eight or ten. With one exception, all dreary. The opening bassoon solos always remind me of the implication of "Waiting For Wood," an article of a couple of years ago in the New Yorker magazine. But, Mr. Eubanks' opening solo in "The Rite of Spring" by The Oregon Symphony is truly divine. Ethereal. Definitive. It sings, and gives the sense of the juggernaut that is to follow.

      "Captured!" Five stars.
