I was listening to this cd in my car this morning, drive time, a time when radio airwaves are polluted with dj's yak-yakking about nothing, playing very little music and nearly all of it payola'd garbage. What a refreshing change to hear this cd, what sweet sounds came out of the speakers! This cd is not a mish-mash of soul/country/rock, it's a wonderfully adept blending of the three and all of it overlaid with Townsend's confident, Philly-soul-meets-Memphis vocals, perfectly matched to the music. I could also start raving about the terrific guitar work but I'd rather talk about these songs. No filler here, none (and isn't that the beauty of indie music -- the artist cares about ALL of his work, it's not just two ok songs and 10 pieces of filler excreted by a giant media conglomerate). And the man clearly is as talented a writer as he is a singer/musician. "I Wrote the Book" is more than inspiring, it's riveting! (The production is superb, too.) Townsend has a rare gift for delivering self-analysis without self-absorption, and setting those lyrics to hummable, danceable, jump-up-and-shout-about-it melodies, vis a vis "Falling Apart At the Seams." My favorite tracks are: "I Wrote the Book," "Falling Apart At the Seams," "The Road Leads Home," "Die Trying," "Love Will Make It Right," "Alabama Raintime," and "Full Time Fool." And of course, "Smoke From a Distant Fire." I liked that one enough to first buy it back in the 1970s, and Townsend's voice has not changed at all over the years except to become richer in timbre and capable of greater nuance. Welcome back to my music collection, Mr. T!
