Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this artist!.......2004-07-29

I recently received this disc from a young relative who I swear was born in the 60's listening to Mowtown with her mom and me instead of the 80's during the disco phase!
She assured me I would like this disc and compared her to a British Minnie Ripperton. I concur. And I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I'm online buying another copy to give as a birthday gift.

5 out of 5 stars Early seventies music from under-rated singer.......2003-03-10

Linda has a very distinctive voice - although she likens her own voice to Minnie Riperton, you wouldn't confuse the two after hearing them both. This compilation covers her Reprise years from 1971 to 1974. The most famous of these tracks is Rock a doodle do. For her covers of It's in his kiss and Baby I'm yours, there is a separate compilation of her Arista music of the late seventies, which I've already reviewed.

Linda wrote all the Reprise tracks on this compilation, usually by herself, although a couple were co-writes. When she moved to Arista, she did not get to record many of her own songs. Partly for that reason, Linda likes her Reprise music better than her Arista music, although that was more commercially successful.

During Linda's period on Reprise, she cut three original albums, plus two other tracks that appeared on a compilation. Rock a doodle doo, one of these tracks, became her biggest hit on Reprise. Linda provides notes about each song - on this one she says she wanted to prove she could write a hit song. It is not typical of the album, which is influenced as much by Joni Mitchell as it is by soul music. Therein lay Linda's problem - she did not fit any stereotype. Her music was, and remains, distinctive.

Curiously, Linda is hugely popular in Japan, though she remains comparatively unknown in Britain and America. The Japanese clearly know a good singer when they hear one.

4 out of 5 stars At last!.......2002-10-12

This is a wonderful, long overdue compilation. Linda Lewis is a British singer/songwriter with lots of diverse elements and sounds - folk, soul, funk, and more. Her sound is unique. Reach For The Truth has lots of the great material she made in the early seventies, superb packaging and liner notes from Linda herself. The sound is faultless. Linda's music is sometimes immediately cathy, at other times it sinks in over repeated listens. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars At Last !!!.......2002-10-03

Finally this underated and overlooked singer/songwriter gets her day on CD! While her Reprise masterpiece "Lark" is available on CD as an import title (for big $$), "Fathoms Deep" and "Heartstrings", released by the same label, have not been (except for a short while as Japanese imports on Banzai CD.) Sadly, any kind of widespread recognition of Linda Lewis and her music escaped the general public in the U.S. Unable to fit Lewis into a comfortable category, the pop world simply ignored her. While lesser artists became household names, Linda Lewis remained virtually unknown - except to music world insiders such as Cat Stevens and Rod Stewart. To say that her music was ahead of it's time would be an understatement. While some of the lyrics from these early 70's recordings may sound a little dated, the music sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first released. Fusing folk, soul, pop, jazz and reggae together in a mix, Lewis, with her unmistakable voice, was immediately recognizable. Listen to such gems as "Waterbaby", "Fathoms Deep", "Reach For The Truth" and the lovely "We Can Win" to witness what this artist was all about. The fact that Warner/Reprise has chosen to release a CD compilation of it's four Lewis recordings proves that the company realizes the importance of the recordings and the groundwork they put down for the future of black women (and black men for that matter) as serious folk singer/songwriters. Not only are these recordings a treat for those of us who were fans from the beginning, but they also offer the opportunity for a whole new generation to explore the wonderful musical world of Linda Lewis. And for anyone that thinks she has vanished from the music scene - well she hasn't. She released three wonderful CDs on the Turpin label in the 90s -the most recent being "Kiss Of Life." And, she sounds the same on these new recordings as she did some twenty years ago. I, for one, hope to be hearing from her again real soon! P.S. My only regret on this compilation is that the wonderful song "Lark" is missing, as is the fantastic "Little Indians". Since I own a copy of "Lark", I can't complain, but they're also great songs that are to be sought out. (If you can afford it, get a copy of "Lark"!) Enjoy!
