About the Artist
PHILO is an eclectic rock trio based in Austin, Texas, consisting of Billy Fadel and Jason Boling, formerly of modern rock band At Least Alisha, and Junior Scott formerly of reggae band Zion. After forming in June of 1999, PHILO's goal was to create envelope-pushing songs that distinguished themselves from the rest of the herd. So far it has worked. Fans frequently comment on the stylistic diversity that can be seen at the shows.

Songwriters Billy Fadel and Junior Scott ply their craft in the most unconventional manner. One technique the band has adopted to stretch their musical diversity involves delving into unfamiliar genres and making them into PHILO originals. With examples of reggae, bossa nova, waltzes, and two steps, PHILO keeps audiences on their toes.

Band Members: Jason Boling: drums
Billy Fadel: vocals, guitar
Junior Scot: bass

Product Description
PHILO's self-titled E.P. consists of 8 songs, which appear to be seamless when listened to in entirety, but also make excellent songs when listened to individually. PHILO E.P. is a trip through different styles and genres that will leave you wanting more.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, painfully vapid.......2007-06-17

Ok, I'm not a fan. I bought this CD because I like folk music, and the song "The World Ain't Slowin Down". The music on this album is fine, but the lyrics are so consistently vapid that I was disgusted that he dares mention Woodie Guthrie as his inspiration. Woodie sung about things going on, events of the past and hopes for the future. Woodie sang with social conscience and relevance. This guy sings like if he's scrawling on a bathroom wall--and has NOTHING to say. Granted 90+% of singers/songs do the same, and nobody seems to notice any lack, so my complaint is from the minority, but there you have it. (As a final insult, the last track moans and whines and destroys a song written by Woodie)

I listened to every song. I hated this CD, I'm selling it immediately, and I demand my two hours back!

5 out of 5 stars Best song writer around.......2007-03-14

Ellis Paul is far and away the best modern song writer. Just close your eyes and see the stories unfold; from climbing the water tower to floating down fifth avenue in a taxi with an angel at your side. And that voice! There aren't many like him anymore. He is truly a classic. Not like that commercial garbage all over the radio nowadays. If you like Ellis give Martin Sexton a listen. Marty also is tops when it comes to song writing. Another Boston folk singer. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of music.......2007-01-09

Paul uses a unique style to give a wide variety of music. Very enjoyable. A good change of pace from the copy-cat tmes we're in right now.

5 out of 5 stars Shows the imagination and skill of a masterful singer/songwriter.......2006-12-22

Playing Time - 1:16:46 (CD#1), 1:07:30 (CD#2)-- Wow, what a body of material to get an historical overview of Ellis Paul' songwriting for the past twenty years. He has many many kinds of songs over the years - folk, love, pop, story, rock, and even novelty songs. This 2-CD set with nearly two and one-half hours of music deserves close listening and analysis of melodies, lyrics, messages, and arrangements. He's worked with seven producers over the years and many more musicians.

Paul attributes "Conversation With A Ghost" (released in 1992) as the first song that brought people out to the clubs of Boston to hear him play. Folksinger Bill Morrissey was producing his music back then. Most recently in 2006, his "American Jukebox Fables" album was produced by Flynn, and there are several cuts from that project on this compilation. There is some previously unreleased material on "Essentials" too, including some live material from some 2006 shows in Mass. and Maine. Reviewing this project a week before Christmas, I especially enjoyed "Snow in Austin," a Texas Christmas song. Another unreleased song was an attention-grabber entitled "Welcome Home To Maine," a writing assignment about his birthplace and its features for the Maine Governor. John Jennings produced some of the newest material for "Essentials" with The Best of Band that included Paul and Jennings, along with J. T. Brown, Dave Mattacks, Don Conoscenti, and Rachel Davis contributing background vocals on one cut.

From the stock of Maine potato farmers, Ellis Paul moved to Boston, studied music, connected with the roots of the folk genre, then proceeded to develop a signature singer/songwriter sound that now incorporates pop, rock and contemporary sensibilities. Ellis Paul's wise perceptiveness and charisma have built him a strong fan base. He's also a hardworking, resilient touring artist who has garnered numerous awards for ten album releases and music, some of which has been featured in soundtracks for the films, Shallow Hal and Me, Myself, & Irene.

Ellis' voice has much character, and his songs understand the bond between land, life, heart and soul. Most are slower to moderate tempo'ed, and Ellis does particular well creating an intimate and familiar feeling with some songs. Keyboards and percussion provide the primary instrumental excitement that serve to increase the emotional impact of his later material. I would've enjoyed more vocal harmony in his arrangements.

Ellis possesses all the fundamental elements for success as a singer/songwriter. His messages are profound, and they make us think. For example, "Home" (from the American Jukebox Fables album) is a lover's tribute with the "house being just an address, you're my home." "Jukebox on my Grave" leaves us with his simple wish to mark the music man's ultimate resting place. His influences are many -- Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Rolling Stones, Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, Patty Griffin and others. Interesting that "Essentials" tips his hat to Woody Guthrie tribute artists and even Woody himself "in a sense." Ellis Paul's imagination and skill are both polished and fanciful all in one. He a masterful singer/songwriter. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars Essentially Ellis.......2006-11-21

Ellis Paul is the best singer songwriter to come along in years & he just keeps getting better.
His Essentials cd is the perfect way for a new fan to get aquainted & a long standing fan to get lost in Ellis memories as well as connecting to a few new songs.
The songs were chosen with care & love I am sure & made me go back into my Ellis collection & pull out some of my less played Ellis cd's to rediscover their magic as well.
This two cd set is a wonderful look at Ellis' career. I especially like the second cd with a beautiful live performance of She Was, a haunting Ellis song. As well as God's Promise, the Woody Guthrie piece that Ellis supplied the music for. And a new favorite Welcome Home To Maine.
If you only buy one cd this holiday season, this should be it.

Though Ray Wylie Hubbard ran with the rowdiest in progressive country through the 1970s, when he fronted the Cowboy Twinkies and wrote "(Up Against the Wall) Redneck Mother," he has since matured into one of the most reflective of Texas troubadours. Following a pair of bluesier releases, Hubbard returns to his folk roots with a collection that could pass as a Lone Star coffeehouse hootenanny. He applies his warm, weathered voice to "Drivin' Wheel" (popularized by Tom Rush), harmonizes with Eliza Gilkyson on her bittersweet "The Beauty Way," and collaborates with Cross Canadian Ragweed's Cody Canada on the hipster's credo "Cooler-N-Hell." A hallelujah chorus including Gilkyson, Patty Griffin, Slaid Cleaves, and Bob Schneider transforms a Woody Guthrie lyric into an a cappella spiritual ("This Morning I Am Born Again"), while the acoustic rendition of "Roll and I Tumble" evokes the rural roots of the blues standard. Though this collection spotlights Hubbard more as an interpreter than a songwriter, he revisits his outlaw days with "Dust of the Chase" and "Dallas After Midnight," trading verses with Jack Ingram on the latter. The album pulls out all the stops on the eight-minute closer "Choctaw Bingo," powered by the dual guitars of songwriter James McMurtry and producer Gurf Morlix. Its reckless spirit suggests that Hubbard hasn't totally settled down. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard offers originals and interpretations of writers such as Eliza Gilkyson, Roger Tillison, James McMurtry, Woody Guthrie and Slaid Cleaves. Out of many voices, he's crafted an album uniquely his own. Tearing down the road, fending off sin or welcoming it into the living room, shaking off the blues and seeking salvation wherever he can find it, Hubbard understands what he calls "the head of the rock 'n' roll gypsies," and no matter who wrote the tale, he knows how to bring it to life with a deep-focus emotional honesty that hits the heart dead center.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Strap them kids in.......2006-10-20

This album is worth getting if only for the the last track. Choctaw Bingo is killer, one of those songs you wish would never end. You just want him to keep telling you about all these crazy characters that will be at his family reunion. And Ray's voice makes you believe every minute of it, hell I got a few family members like that myself (who doesn't)

The rest of the disc is a little different from that, but really growing on me. I especially like "dust of the chase", "torn in two" and "the beauty way".

Pick this album up for Choctaw Bingo, but stay for the rest.

5 out of 5 stars I took a chance on this guy.......2006-06-05

I was shopping for some new music in the Americana section and I picked up this CD and I don't know, for some reason it really appealed to me, so I bought it, which I usually won't do on a whim because I don't like wasting my money on music I don't like. I loved this CD immediately and have really been drawn to it more and more. Ray's voice is very haunting, the music is fantastic, and to me it has this Pentacostal-RebelReligion-Hillbilly type feel with a message and I LOVE IT, reminds me of Lucinda Williams (Get Right With God).

I would highly recommend this album. I am definitely going to check out more of his music.

4 out of 5 stars Really a good recording with one exception.......2006-05-12

Ray Wylie's recording of (mostly) other people's music is a lot better than I expected. I guess I'm still shaking my head over those 70's albums made by Billy Joe Shaver and Guy Clark when their record companies had them record song they didn't write themselves. But this time, it works and it works outstandingly well.

The one exception is the James McMurtry song at the end. Like a lot of JMcM's stuff, it begins with a good foundation, then quickly goes to hell and then keeps on going well past the point of being an embarassment. "Choctaw Bingo" is the longest cut on the recording. It's also unfocused, disoriented, disorganized and certainly the weakest of the songs.

But what the heck. Ray Wylie's able to make anything sound good. I'd even consider buying a recording of "We Are The World" if Ray Wylie sang it! (Not that he ever would, of course.)

Four stars--coulda been five.

5 out of 5 stars cooler-n-hell indeed........2006-03-10

an amazing cd. not a bad song on it. i would recommend
it to anyone. another great texas artist.

5 out of 5 stars One cooler-n-hell recording .......2005-09-15

Ray Wylie Hubbard together with coconspirator and producer Gurf Morlix has one cooler-n-hell recording on his hands with "Delirium Tremolos." At Gurf's sage urging, Mr. Hubbard interprets seven songs of various peers and contemporaries, as well as three of his own, and hits the bulls eye on each, finding a groove and digging deep.

I can't see any reason to try a play-by-play recap here, for hearing the session as a whole seems the best course, yet savoring each track for its own merits also hits the mark. The recording itself is crystal clear, allowing one to appreciate Rick Richard's excellent drumming, the subtle interplay of guitars, the contrasting background vocals, or the authority Mr. Hubbard imparts to these tales of passion, hard living, and, yes, having a good time.

Few folk albums indulge in mood swings more severe than the ones on Defying Gravity. "A woman my age, sittin' here cryin'" are the first words Cheryl Wheeler sings on her first album of new material in six years. During the next four older-but-sadder songs, bittersweet is as chipper as it gets. Even the comparatively sunny "Summer's Almost Over" finds the veteran troubadour confiding "I'm crying but I don't know why." But then comes the Caribbean lilt of the title track--written by Jesse Winchester--and the mood lightens, as the instrumental "Clearwater, Florida," and the jazzy syncopation of "Here Come Floyd" continue to chase the clouds away. By the time the album shifts into a couple of live tracks of Wheeler regaling the audience with the cell-phone absurdities of "It's the Phone" and the travails of air travel in "On the Plane," she has her crowd on the verge of tears of laughter. As the reflective "Alice" and redemptive "Blessed" attest, Wheeler is a folksinger for all emotional seasons. --Don McLeese

Album Description

With six years having past since Wheeler's last full-length studio collection (1999's Sylvia Hotel), the much-anticipated Defying Gravity overflows with a wealth of exquisitely crafted, powerfully resonant original songs. While her compositions have been recorded by artists as diverse as Suzy Bogguss, Garth Brooks, Bette Midler, and Linda Thompson, Wheeler's burnished alto, nimble guitar playing, and sly sense of humor insure that she will always be her own best interpreter. Standout tracks on Defying Gravity, like the bittersweet "Summer's Almost Over," the aching opener "Since You've Been Gone," and the careful character study "Alice," are defined equally by Wheeler's gifts as a writer and performer. "On the Plane" and "It's the Phone," both recorded live in concert at the now-defunct Bottom Line in New York City, are priceless examples of Wheeler the satirist. Taken as a whole, Defying Gravity paints a portrait of a performer and composer continuing to discover rewarding new avenues in her finely-developed craft.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Can it get any better?.......2007-04-05

After months of being unable to remove Cheryl Wheeler's Driving Home CD from my CD player years ago, I never really expected any of her newer albums, while excellent, to be able to hit the mark set by that album's sheer lyricism and poignancy. I was wrong. Defying Gravity pretty much matches it stride for stride. There are at least five "genius level" songs on it, in my view ("Alice", "Summer's Almost Over", "Here Come Floyd", "Little Road", and "Blessed"). I noticed how much I'd fallen in love with this album when my children asked me why I kept playing the same song over and over (in that case, it was "Summer's Almost Over", but "Alice" has evoked the same behavior in me). You honestly can't go wrong buying this album. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Defying Gravity by Cheryl Wheeler.......2006-03-10

I found Cheryl during the "heyday" of Napster, bought all of her albums, she never fails to please!!!

5 out of 5 stars Tears And Laughter.......2005-10-03

Cheryl Wheeler possesses one of the most beautiful and distinctive voices in the music business, and has (especially for these times) that rarest of talents: she writes memorable, TUNEFUL songs. Compelling lyrics are fairly common among the many accomplished "contemporary folk" artists working today. I would even venture to say that "poetry," as opposed to mere jingle-writing, is pretty much expected of anyone looking to rise above the crowd (and it is an ever-expanding crowd). But few have the ability to compose melodies that match or exceed lyrical content. A handful of artists are distinguishing themselves these days in this respect (Dar Williams, John Gorka, Lucinda Williams and Eliza Gilkyson come most immediately to mind), and many of them, like Cheryl Wheeler, have been toiling at the fringes of commercial success for quite a few years. Thankfully, Wheeler and Co. do not seem to care much about the mainstream, and those of us who value music that rises above the usual type of dopey love song that tends to make it into the Top 40, are all the richer for it. Not that Ms. Wheeler does not write about love. It is one of her main subjects, and among her loveliest songs are compositions about every kind of love; they are thoughtful and personal and deep, and have the ability to draw tears from a grown man. This grown man, anyway. On DEFYING GRAVITY, which contains a collection of the most gorgeous melodies she has ever written, Cheryl Wheeler is found at the top of her game. "Little Road," in which Wheeler wonders "how can there be trouble in this world," while marveling at the blissful flow of nature, is heartbreaking, and more potent than any political rant could ever be. "Alice" is equally moving, about a middle-aged woman who becomes nomadic after the death of her husband. "Summer's Almost Over" is of a type of song that Cheryl Wheeler has made her own particular specialty: careful yet emotional observation of the changing seasons, and of nature in general. This one is among her most quietly powerful, and I can't imagine anyone with a heart in their chest not being moved by it.

No losers here, but there is an awkward juxtaposition, as in most of Cheryl's albums, of gorgeous songs with very funny ones. She has a bit of a split personality, and her humor is by turns hilarious and scathing. This "other" Cheryl is best seen and heard live, and, indeed, the satyrical songs on her albums are often from concert performances, as are "It's The Phone" and "On The Plane," included on DEFYING GRAVITY. Thank you, Cheryl, for so perfectly articulating the outrage so many of us feel at the many rude, loud cell phone users that we all encounter on the train, on the bus, in crowds.

There is no such thing as a bad Cheryl Wheeler album, but if you've never explored the worlds of Cheryl Wheeler, this is as good a place as any to start. Simply brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars I'm a fan, but a disappointed one.......2005-03-17

Having been known to go without groceries to attend one of her concerts, and owning most everything she's ever recorded on CD, on tape or on VHS, I would describe myself as a Cheryl Wheeler fan. And I have never failed to find on each of her productions three or four "stop what you are doing and listen to this" songs--until now. Listening to "Defying Gravity" over and over again, I find the accompaniement over-produced, at times amateurish, and often irritating. While the songs are "nice", there are none that grab you by the collar and swing your attention around to them. But, it's still Cheryl--the images are as clear and sharp as ever, her playing is clean and pleasing, and her voice is still as smooth and as sweet as honey-wine--and for this alone could I recommend this CD to another of her fans. Yet there's a big something missing that I cannot quite find the words to describe--I'm listening to her CD, "and I'm crying but I don't know why..."

On his second Philo release, singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves builds a bridge between New England, where he grew up, and Texas, where he now lives. Cleaves's voice often affects a yearning quality reminiscent of traditional Irish music, and his songs are populated by the sort of tragic characters familiar to old folk ballads. In "Cold and Lonely," a poor farmer grieves for his dead wife and children, while the narrative "Breakfast in Hell" is a Canadian logger's answer to "John Henry." The suffering takes a more personal turn in "One Good Year," where Cleaves laments, "It's a bitter wind, in your face every day / It's the little sins, that wear your soul away." But just when the downcast mood begins to grow oppressive, Cleaves comes back with the defiant "Bring It On" and the redemptive "This Morning I Am Born Again," featuring Woody Guthrie's amazing lyrics set to new music. Austin-based producer Gurf Morlix , known for his long association with Lucinda Williams, contributes spare and evocative instrumental textures. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Country Blues.......2007-06-23

Broke Down is a fine example of crossover country blues. It best tunes are haunting acoustic tracks and evocative vocals, such "this morning I am born again". It's hard to classify as just country, bluegrass or folk. Slaid Cleves voice is at his best in the low toned country gospel tracks on this album. It's his best work I think.

5 out of 5 stars good review.......2007-01-09

this was a gift for my husband and was greatly enjoyed. This is nice easy listening folk type music. It also caused some other friends to start listening to him.

...Slaid Cleaves "Broke Down" is such a good record! Slaid is in the vein of many a folk singer-songwriter, but this album stands out from the rest.

Slaid writes and sings songs that are very descriptive; it's like a story being told in front of you.

The music is very laid back and mellow with lots of acoustic guitar.

Also, it's solid throughout start to finish, no duds in there. Superb stuff.

This album is astonshingly good. The more I listen to it the more I am blown away.

5 out of 5 stars McCabe's #6 - Slaid Cleaves 05-23-2004.......2004-05-24

This is a review of Slaid's concert at McCabe's in Santa Monica on Sunday 05-23-2004. He was simply incredible, playing his signature blend of Folk-rock & Alt/Country with his touring band (His fellow guitarist Michael O'Conner ROCKED!) He played most of this album along with songs from his latest album "Wishbone". My favorites of the night were the title track (Lots of airplay on Sirius Disorder // 24 satellite channel) and 'Bring It On' - also a staple of Sirius' and NPR radio. The encore brought Slaid alone with his guitar, playing a unplugged piece from his new album called 'New Year's Day'. After the concert - he signed my copy of "Broke Down" with his inscription "For Joe, Slaid Cleaves 2004". I told him he was the first artist that I heard over Sirius Satellite Radio, and he was happy to hear that. He told me he was 'thinking' of satellite radio, I told him to go "Sirius". He said he would look into it. Thanks Slaid!! JG

Different Stripe, a welcome best-of collection from Wheeler, offers 19 tracks that span the entirety of her 16-year recording career, including two songs from her 1986 eponymous debut released on the small folk label North Star Records. Wheeler is considered by many to be one of the finest songwriters of the "New Folk" era that developed in the 1980s, and, listening to Different Stripe, it's easy to hear why. She writes haunting and beautiful ballads that, when matched to her smoky, smooth vocals, are deeply affecting. Fans should note that there are two new tracks, "Walk Around Downtown" and "Gandhi/Buddha," among the "hits" here, which include "Addicted," a No. 1 country hit for Dan Seals, and "Aces," a country Top 10 for Suzy Bogguss. --Jim Caligiuri

4 out of 5 stars A great performer, a super CD.......2007-05-08

I'm late learning about Cheryl Wheeler and her gifts as a singer, songwriter, and best of all performer (including sit-down comedy!). She is the consummate storyteller with a wonderful voice and sense of humor. This CD, my first, seemed like the best place to start ... a nice mix. I listen often and very much enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful discovery.......2006-11-05

I was impressed with Cheryl when I recently met her waiting for a plane and came home and ordered this album. I love, love, love it. She has voice that travels to the middle of one's soul and the lyrics are incredible. I am so happy to have learned about this talented singer-songwriter...better late than never.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2006-09-14

This album is well worth purchasing. There are a number of songs on it that are moving and pull at you like nothing else can. I love "Arrow" and "Ghandi/Buddha", "75 Septembers" of course and there are others. I did not particularly note "Sylvia Hotel" as anything special on the Sylvia Hotel album but for some reason when I heard it in the context of other songs here, it became another stand out. Cheryl Wheeler can just get to the heart of the matter in a few choice phrases that catch your soul forever.

5 out of 5 stars unsung hero of song.......2006-01-29

I love this CD. In fact this is the third copy of it I've purchased because I keep buying it for everyone else! It's great travel music for listening in the car, great sing-a-long music for when you're tooling around the house and no one is looking PLUS it's the only CD that will calm down my 11-month-old when she wakes up cranky!! But all these great things aside, Cheryl Wheeler is a master story-teller in song - and that makes this a real pleasure to listen to over and over. I can't believe I went without her for so long.

2 out of 5 stars Not that funny, but a beautiful voice.......2005-10-22

I first got to know Cheryl Wheeler from her funny songs on the Sylvia Hotel CD. I also saw her in concert where I was taken with her folksy loving insightful songs. I also thought she was very bright and had an unbelievable way with words. But still the songs that got me most were the ones that were kind of funny. I have to say in a collection album with 19 songs, they are all very somber, and not the funny ones I was looking for. Her voice is beautiful, and the lyrics are still compelling, but don't plan to laugh.

As most music gets slicker and slicker, Hubbard grows more and more crude; Growl is even more eternal and lowdown than Eternal and Lowdown, its predecessor, on which he first explicitly relied on blues roots. With Gurf Morlix again producing, melodies meander and stumble through faraway guitars and fat, echoing bass and drums while Hubbard ponders his usual Big `Uns such as sin, loneliness, temptation, betrayal, and afterlife. There's plenty of slow, shimmering bottleneck, nimble fingerpicking, and dark Southern Gothic. "Purgatory Road" could be a rewrite of "Tobacco Road" by the very wasted offspring of Tony Joe White and Bobbie Gentry. Now and again, the band shows it can also rock, as on the (perhaps overly) jaundiced "Rock-N-Roll Is a Vicious Game," or chug, as on "Stolen Horses." The biting Hubbard wit may be pretty much absent here, but that's okay, too, because this stuff packs enough of a wallop that you don't miss it. --John Morthland

only started to listen to this music a few months ago but I love it will buy more of his stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Major Artist, Must-Have CD.......2006-07-24

Ray Wylie Hubbard's songs are as full or memorable couplets and quotable lines as any songwriter I've ever heard.

I heard him for the first time at the 2006 Kerrville Folk Festival. (I was a first-time attendee.) I hadn't seen his name on the program or calendar of events and had no idea who he was or what he was about. I gathered that he is regarded as a legend by some, but nobody that I polled knew anything about him. His performance was the best of the festival (in the time that I was there), and I resolved to pick up a some of his music upon my return to Pittsburgh.

I buy a lot of music based on an artist's connection to the work of artists I already admire. I'm often disappointed. There's an awful lot of poseurs running around who heard "Folsom Prison Blues" when they were kids and were taken with the image of shooting a man just to watch him die but who wouldn't have it in them to raise their voices to their own mothers--people singing about trains who've never jumped a train, spewing hyperbole about desire and heartbreak without ever having really experienced desperation.

I don't know the man, Ray Wylie Hubbard. Maybe he's just an extremely talented writer capable of creating the illusion that he speaks from experience. But he's made a believer out of me. I suspect that I'll end up buying everything he's ever recorded, enjoying most of it and appreciating all of it.

5 out of 5 stars How did I miss this guy?.......2004-12-30

I never heard of Ray Wylie Hubbard until a month ago, but I think he's going to be one of my favorite artists. "Growl" is a great CD -- a mixture of country, rock, and folk with some Texas attitude, a lot of humor, and some musing on heavy-duty topics.

Just to mention four of the songs, "Rock-n-Roll is a Vicious Game" is a semi comic bio of a rock band. You might be able to figure out the tone of "Screw you, We're From Texas" from the title, but it also has a killer rock guitar threading its way through the half-spoken vocal. "The Knives of Spain" has another great display of guitar work by Buddy Miller. And finally "No Lie" is talking blues with a beat than makes your toes wiggle.

These may be the best songs on the CD, but they're all a pretty good combination of Hubbard's gravel voice and top notch instrumentation.

5 out of 5 stars A Master Piece.......2004-10-20

I was walking down a creek bed out in the country with a friend, telling him about this album. I went on to say that I believed he, Ray Wylie, is one of the great poets of our time. He asked, "Are you including Dylan?" I was thinking about whether to include Dylan in the category of "our time," and must have thought quietly for awhile, and before I could answer, my friend said, "wow." I guess that was an answer. When I listen to this album, the most vivid images wash through my head. He has an uncanny ability to present profound issues, mixing it with prosaic, folksy phrases. Who else could replicate the freedom of Nirvana with riding on stolen horses. You sense that you are in the hands of a master, stretching you in ways you've never been stretched. Listening to this music and taken as a whole, I sometimes see a tow headed kid on the rolling prairies of Oklahoma, growing up listening to Muddy Waters.

4 out of 5 stars Cognitive Resonance.......2003-09-20

Taken as a whole, the music here is not nimble, slick, or overpolished. "Growl" lives up to its name, as Ray Wylie Hubbard plumbs life's true meaning. He conjures up songs about drinking, playing dice, drugs, immortality, crime, death, love, and all the other important themes generally taboo for those who pander to the radio gods. Mr. Hubbard crafts superb lyrics, rarely pulling punches but sometimes things get a little over the top as in Rock-n-Roll Is a Vicious Game.

Most tracks find Mr. Hubbard melding his---how can one describe his vocals adequately---voice and various guitars with Rick Richards on drums and Gurf Morlix on all sorts of guitars, bass, and percussion plus production.

And the production here is dead-on, just enough spit and polish to hold things together instead of smothering the rough spirit of this music.

"Growl" occupies that niche of music that is hard to label, similar to much of Steve Earle's work. But careful listening to this CD brings its own rewards and even casual listening its own joys. In short, "Growl" deserves to be heard by a wider audience, not that the audience deserves to hear it.

The album cover shows Nanci Griffith standing outside a Woolworth's, holding a book of poetry--a recurring motif in her album art--while lovers dance behind her. That combination of the most quotidian, small-town details and the most committed but rarely pretentious poetic ambition is the key to Griffith's art. Her fourth and final album for Philo, a quiet masterpiece of the Texas singer-songwriter's style, weaves together a spunky, newgrass sound (courtesy of Bela Fleck and Mark O'Connor) and songs of leaving home and leaving lovers. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Sweet Songs.......2005-09-26

I really enjoy listening to this singer. On this CD there are some exceptionally sentimental, sweet songs like "Love At The Five And Dime" and "More Than A Whisper." The latter is my favorite track on the CD: I hear feminine strength pushing through the sentimentality. Very charming. Some of the tracks are straight forward country and western music, like "Lookin' For The Time" which are not special to me. But I like these tracks too, they are mostly excellent for what they are.

AGAIN THIS A "MUST"

5 out of 5 stars songwriting at its very best.......2003-04-26

I second all the other reviewers. To me, I find that this album puts Nancy Griffith in an exclusive class among the very finest of songwriters of our time. "Ponchartrain" does something few writers can do: write eloquently about the love of place, and to do it with melody that carries the words as freely as the spirit in those words. I WANT to see Lake Ponchartrain someday because of this song. There is so much going on in these lyrics... setting the scene with that other French-American locale, Montreal, and, like a lover who finds absence makes the heart grow fonder, realizes she must go back. In short, a simple sounding tune that is layered with a lot more than meets the ear initially. "Love's Found A Shoulder", is like diamond-cutting-- so exact in word choice that that the reult is so beautiful you cant really see the effort that went into it. Some day, as others have said, I really hope this writer gets a wider respect. Those of us who have found Nancy Griffith's songs know already that we have a found a true musical artist. I simply don't know of a better songwriter, regardless of genre or gender.

5 out of 5 stars One of those 'must have' albums.......2002-05-26

Every song on this album is a story that invites the listener in to become a part of it. The songs are well-written, well-sung and well-produced. But the most important part of this album is Nanci's heart. Her voice seems to echo what she feels in her heart when she sings..and this album is one of the best she's ever done.

Notable for her meditations on relationships, the ties that bind families ("Mary and Omie"), and the journeys that threaten to break lives apart ("I'm Not Driving This Wheel"), Nanci Griffith continued to stretch the boundaries of folk narrative with her third album. Musically, the arrangements are perfectly in keeping with her previous acoustic orchestrations--Griffith's records may seem spare, although the layers of cello, mandolins, and Dobros add signature texture--but lyrically she pushes beyond easy melancholy and into the weightier subject of love's struggle against time and distance. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Take A Little Spin..........2006-02-11

My favorite Nanci Griffith CD.
This is still in her pre-political period, where one could listen to some wonderful folk tales without being forced to listen to political pap that you may or may not agree with. I don't know about you, but a musician's views on world situations leave me empty and sound rather dated after a while. Which is why I like this CD so much. The tunes on this disc all tell a story of their own, taking the listener on many different journeys, and away from the problems of our worldly situations. And these songs will sound fresh a hundred years from now.
My particular favorite is Ballad of Robin Winter-Smith for no other reason than I love Nanci's vocals in it. Also, Spin On A Red Brick Floor is another wonderful tune on which Ms. Griffith sings of a favorite club of her's located in (I believe) Texas. By the way, she sings the whole first verse without taking a breath!
I'm not Driving These Wheels could have been an FM rocker, with its driving beat. And the title tune is just beautiful.
Notice I didn't write much on her lyrics. The stories Nanci tells in these earlier recordings warrant the listener to come up with their own "pictures" as they listen. Nanci's voice, in her prime here, suits the music and words perfectly.
Once In A Very Blue Moon and the follow up Last Of The True Believers are two of the best folk rock / storytelling CD's out there.
Nanci at her finest.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible CD.......2005-06-29

This is a masterpiece. It ranks up there with Carly Simon's "Another Passenger" or Joan Armatrading's self titled CD. All thirteen tracks are well written with great instrumentation and spirited vocals from Nanci.

4 out of 5 stars another Nanci gem.......2002-02-26

A wonderfull remastering job done to her first three cd's,these now have a much more detailed and warm sound, the instruments which were previosly buried now all have a very nice clarity. The matriel on all three of these early discs is fairly similiar featuring Nanci's very vivid songwriting with a folk/country backing.Nanci's best versions of her songs have always been live ones, check out her cd One Fair Summers Eve for the definitive versions of many of these songs after you have explored the originals

No matter how good the music shop is, you can't buy the instrument that Dave Van Ronk plays. It's a voice. Van Ronk has what you might call a vintage throat, a rare antique that has collected every story that has passed his way in decades of folk singing. It is a scratched, raw voice--memorable, exciting, and suffused with the weight of experience. In this 1976 reissue, Van Ronk uses a simple acoustic-guitar-and-voice dynamic to sketch out the wisdom and world-weariness he found in traditional tunes such as "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well" and "Down South Blues." His ragtime guitar renditions of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" and Jelly Roll Morton's "The Pearls" are brilliant reappraisals of enduring songs. His cover of Joni Mitchell's "That Song About the Midway" slowly courses through the labyrinth of a sad, wrecked life. This is a striking album, balanced with dark blues and sly humor. --Lois Maffeo

5 out of 5 stars Greatness personified .......2007-02-01

From a time when music had words and the words had meaning. Dave Von Ronk was one of the great folk singers of all time. His voice is unique and his words are truth. Where are the truth tellers when we need them??????

5 out of 5 stars Dave Von Ronk.......2003-08-30

I first heard this album as a teenager in the 70's. I listened to it constantly and I'm happy to now own it on CD. Dave has a soulful sound that reaches inside of you and makes you want to sing along. I recommend these tunes to anyone who feels the need to moan along - it is great for the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Van Ronk's masterpiece.......1999-02-27

One of the heroes of the New York and American folk revival, Dave Van Ronk is a supremely gifted singer and guitarist who was there to bridge the first revival (Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly) and the second (the one that produced Bob Dylan and transformed popular music) and who shows no sign of slowing down. Mediocre Van Ronk recordings are not exactly nonexistent, but they are rare. Sunday Street, finally available on CD after more than three decades, is surely not one of them. It may be his masterpiece, a fully realized, deeply affecting exploration of the various genres -- blues, ragtime, jazz, spirituals, Tin Pan Alley, Joni Mitchell -- that Van Ronk always manages to subsume under a single genre: Van Ronk music. It ain't necessarily pretty, and its sheer intensity may scare you now and again, but it'll shake you in the way art that is plainspoken and true scares you. The blackly comic title song, the CD's one original, takes off from the theme of Van Ronk's onetime signature song, "Willie the Weeper," but "Sunday Street" manages to stand on its own wobbly feet as a sad and hilarious tale of a drunkard's twisted vision of heaven.

With his third album since transplanting his music from his native Maine to Austin, Slaid Cleaves now draws as much from country and blues roots, with a touch of classic-rock Springsteen, as he does from the troubadour tradition. His tales of losers and dreamers, of hard luck and life's tough lessons, benefit here from the musical muscle of a band that includes producer Gurf Morlix on bass and guitar, veteran keyboardist Ian McLagan, drummer Rick Richards, and guitarist Charles Arthur, who channels the sinuous inspiration of Otis Rush on the bluesy "Sinner's Prayer." Other highlights include the tuneful title track (written with Ray Wylie Hubbard), the barroom brawling "Drinkin' Days," the taut wisdom of "Hearts Break," and the affirmation of "New Year's Day." In the four years since his previous release, Cleaves has grown into a writer who is more than the sum of his influences, and a musical artist who is no longer content to let the lyric carry the whole load. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Slaid Cleaves, called "one of the finest singer-songwriters from Texas" by The New York Times, ventures into exciting new territory on the follow up to the acclaimed Broke Down. Delivering hard hitting songs and a more muscular sound by producer Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Robert Earl Keen), Wishbones is the strongest album yet from this captivating artist.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I don't believe a word of it.......2006-07-24

I purchased this disc after having read the glowing reviews and because of Slaid Cleaves' association with artists I admire. Unfortunately, I find WISHBONE utterly boring and unlistenable. Every note, word, syllable and emotion is so perfectly placed that it resembles the work of a gifted graduate student who has assimilated the works of the masters without really having anything of his own to say. The overwhelming effort to convey sincerity and passion seems processed and canned. I greatly prefer his UNSUNG disc.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-09-01

After the acclaim this album has drawn I was looking very forward to hearing it. I was disappointed in it and found it impossible to get into. I listened to it through 5 times trying to find a groove with it but never did.

2 out of 5 stars A little too country.......2005-02-16

As much of a fan as i am of Slaid Cleaves, i didnt enjoy Wishbones. Slaid's relocation to Texas is strating to seep further into his music. The folk sounds of Lifes Other Side and No Angel Knows have been left behind for a more "twangy" sound.
Slaid, come back to Maine!!

4 out of 5 stars Aint broke don't fix it.......2004-09-01

No huge surprises in Wishbones, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". So expect, top notch instrumentation (big iron strings and sliding steel abound ) and equally slick production and performance, emotional weight and clever wordplay, stories of the hard road, American fables, and lovelorn vinaigrettes. In his own words from the title track "this is real life no reality show" . The gritty Cleaves is again in cahoots with Austin production mentor and buddy Gurf Morlix, but this time he is really utilising Gurfs considerable guitaring skills to maximum effect. This album is a bit rockier with more band arrangements than the award winning 2000 release Broke Down. Cleaves says, with obvious pride, of Wishbones "The instrumentation becomes more a part of the story instead of the background to the story." It certainly feels comfortable on the ears to this listener, and I can see why Cleaves is comfortable with the arrangements to the extent he indicates.

The only complaint I can imagine from his legion of fans will be "why so long"? Slaid Cleaves is at his best when he is telling "beginning middle and end" stories and Wishbones, if anything, has even more story songs than Broke Down. He has a lazy affability and a deceptively well-honed ability to introduce characters, lay settings, communicate emotions and conduct a journey through verse long adventures, with either comforting or confronting choruses, to the inevitable moral filled conclusion and all in 3 minutes. Slaid is as good as it gets at this, and what is even better, from the point of view of an ardent gig goer, the hard working Cleaves ( whos musical trail started busking in Cork in the mid 80's where he was a student ) can still be found touring 10 months of the year and will in any given year be at a venue near you.

Though if this album is as user friendly as I suspect it is, and given some breaks, it can't be long until he will only be available live, as a dot at the end of some warehouse for £30 a ticket, see him while you can!

5 out of 5 stars Slaid has another great one.......2004-07-30

Slaid Cleaves is a great talent. His songs are sad but somehow when he sings them they come out beautiful and moving rather than depressing. I bought my first CD of his after hearing a live performance about 3 years ago. I quickly found that it was the CD that I played the most. 3 years later, I still play that CD and all his others more than any in my collection. He is also a great live performer. I have added Wishbones to my Slaid "playlist" on my computer (after legitimately purchasing it) and can tell that it will wear as well as the previous CD's.

BTW, the reviewer above (a music fan) who gave the CD one star and wrote the scathing review, wrote almost the same words in a review of a previous CD, "Broke Down" (You can read it for yourself if you go to the "Broke Down" reviews). It seems a bit fishy that "A music fan" bought and reviewed this CD after saying that the previous CD was a waste of plastic. While everyone has the right to his/her opinion, I am guessing this person has a personal problem with Slaid (jealousy maybe????) or maybe with Rounder Records. I wouldn't put much stock in it.
