About the Artist
This band was started in 1993 after a couple of musicians from Prince's New Power Generation decided to collaborate and create an outlet for their own musical ideas.Since that time they have gone on to release 3 CDs worth of original music, and have performed on stages across North America. BAND_MEMBERS: Spicy T, John Strawberry Fields, Julius Collins III, Tommy Barbarella, Dave Anania, Brian Gallagher

Product Description
12 original songs from the band described by Musician Magazine as "One of the Best Unsigned Bands in America."(1998) Gravy is a tasty blend of Soul, R&B and good old rock and roll, and loaded with good songs. In fact one song off Gravy was awarded in the 1998 John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

4 out of 5 stars This Gravy is Delicious!!.......2006-07-08

CCR does it again. Soul Gravy is like Donnie and Marie - Its a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, and everything in between. But Unlike Donnie and Marie, this album doesn't suck. Fans of the band or lovers of outlaw country will especially like this masterful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Next Generation Southern Rock.......2005-09-01

Cross Canadian Ragweed confirms the belief that the heart of Southern Rock is still beating. I wish mainstream country radio played this stuff more often. These guys ROCK!!

4 out of 5 stars Goofball name, terrific band.......2005-06-18

We picked up some CCR albums last year when they were listed as the warmup act for a ZZ Top concert we were going to. We liked the recordings and we loved their live show. CCR suffers from an identity problem, they think they're a rock band with a strong country influence but the music industry thinks they're alt.country. And let's face it, the name of the band doesn't help. Fortunately the music speaks for itself, this band has solid song-writing and they deliver a smoking live show, the ZZ Top audience had never heard of them but still gave them a standing ovation at the end of their set. This is a good album and there are several songs here that could be hits if radio stations would play them, but whether they make it big or remain a cult band, CCR is good stuff.

    5 out of 5 stars Daring Ugliness.......2007-05-11

Zappa liked the concept of sounding ugly, thus the review's title. But actually there are moments filled with beauty mixed with furious sound collages and delirious talking from inside the piano. It can sound shocking when first listened, but later on the listener gets accostumed and finds a real sense in this piece that (in FZ's words) started out to be a ballet but probably did not make it. Furthermore, this is, in a way, the birth of "conceptual continuity" and the first record in which FZ showed why he was one of the best editors to ever work in a recording studio. Try and imagine Frank cutting and pasting tape like a mad sciencetist and putting bags of sand over the sustain pedal of a piano while already thinking about what to do on the next album.
It must be said, though, that this album is not recommendable for those not interested in deep in FZ or avant-garde music.

5 out of 5 stars Pigs, Ponies and Kangaroos.......2006-09-17

From what I can understand (differing dates from different sources) it seems LG was recorded before WOIIFTM but released shortly thereafter. Either way if you enjoyed WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY you'll probably like LG too even though it isn't anywhere near as scathing as it's predacessor. Gone are the nasty snipes at the hippy/flower power generation but some of the music is derivitive (or not) of WOIIFTM. Those renditions are either orchestral or at least instrumental and go to show how many different ways a single piece of music can be performed. The biggest difference musically is that this is essentially an instrumental composition.

Along with the tunes are conversations about living in a drum that get revisited some thirty years later in CIVILIZATION PHASE THREE (a piano) and the introduction of Louis The Turkey who was nicnamed because of his bizarre laugh. Zappa gets into some dialogues in the PIGS and PONIES segments that introduce some of his earliest concepts regarding the physical universe, society and it's relationship to THE BIG NOTE.

This is an album (CD) I hadn't heard for many years after WOIIFTM. Hearing it today ties much of what was happening in CPIII and LOST EPISODES together showing Zappa considered everything to be just an element in this one really big composition... a lifetime body of work. It's typical Zappa (if such a thing could ever be) in that it incorporates a musical genius' vision with irreverant naïveté creating something musically interesting and socially insightful.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Goofball Nightmare Opera Gone Haywire.......2006-08-27

No normal person can enjoy this.
I love being strange, And this is one of my top 10 most out there albums, it gets alot of play on my stereo, odd noises talking about living in a drum and a couple of chicano teens talking about boogeymen.
deranged orchestrations, opera and surf music parody,
plus it sounds way ahead of it's time, it still does
now in the 2000's. crazy, sounds like a psycho's sweetest nightmare.

    4 out of 5 stars Sounds Like A Dream.......2006-05-29

One thing that I noticed right away upon listening to this for the first time, was how essential Frank Zappa is to his own work. Let me explain. I have been a fan of Zappa's music for as long as I can remember, but I didn't hear "Lumpy Gravy" for the first time until I bought the box sets called "The Old Masters, (Volumes One, Two, and Three)" released in the 1980's. The front cover (and rear, for that matter) features a picture of him, as he looked in 1967; strange clothes, grubby appearance, and that Mediterranian intensity he always had about him. He is listed as composer, producer, and conductor. I didn't know what to expect. When I looked at the musician credits, I noticed he didn't play one note of this music, nor did he speak or sing a single word. But that was okay, it was his work. And right away, I noticed the missing element. FZ, and the Mothers. Bunk Gardner is in the orchestra, and the voices of "Motorhead" Sherwood, Roy Estrada, and Jim Black are featured, but Zappa is conspicuous in his absence from the sound. Even though he wrote, arranged, and conducted the music passages, and edited the tapes from the sessions. It is his work, and I haven't found any comments by him dismissing this work, so I am sure it is what he wanted it to be.

I understand the fragmented approach to this recording, and I often think of it as a dream set to music. The random-sounding dialogue, the sound effects, the augmenting of traditional instrument sounds into something new, all figure into later works. His "Conceptual Continuity" is all over this release. Though it was released after "We're Only In It For The Money," it was recorded before, and it features many similarities, even with the word balloon on the inside picture calling it 'Phase 2 of "We're Only In It For The Money.'"

Personally, I enjoy listening to this recording, even though it is a little frustrating at times to only hear fragments of what would become full-length, better-known pieces. I also look at it as a sampler of the ideas he expanded on in later years. So many of the little things here pop up all over his catalogue, and it reminds me a lot of one of his final works, "Civilization, Phaze III," only not quite as sophisticated. And it is a good companion to "Civilization..." or "We're Only In It..." But a lot of his work can be jumbled together, even at random, and still make sense.

"Lumpy Gravy" is the first solo release by Frank Zappa, but still has the spirit of the Mothers Of Invention's records, a sense of people working together, a mood that seemed to slowly fade away as the 70's wore on, and disappeared quicker through the 80's. Every band had a lot of incredible talent, but as time wore on, the "group" idea diminished as the "soloist" idea became more prevalent. And even though the band that performed on the "Broadway The Hardway" tour in 1987 and 1988 was the quote-unquote, "Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life," the elements that brought "Lumpy Gravy" about, twenty years earlier, were all but history, maybe for the better, but alienation became his career's most prominent theme, as rock and jazz musicians were gradually replaced by classically trained musicians exclusively, and ultimately, the digitally sampled recordings from his Synclavier were all he needed. "Lumpy Gravy" WAS "Civilization Phaze III," but done on real instruments.

Don't expect mainstream, accessible "songs," per se, and it really is a good piece of Zappa's recorded legacy.

3 out of 5 stars For Experienced Zappa Fans and Fans of Musique Concrete Only.......2006-03-18

Warning *** If you have never listened to Frank Zappa's music and are interested in experiencing it, this is "definitely" not the place to start. I recommend either "Freak Out!" or "Over-nite Sensation" as the albums to first listen to.

This album is divided into two 15 minute parts (a short album at less than 32 minutes).

The problem with the cd version of this album is the decision not to divide the many different sections of each part into separate tracks. Therefore, there are only 2 tracks that are each 15 minutes long.

Lumpy Gravy Part 1 is, by far, the superior part of the album. You hear the opening Lumpy Gravy Theme, which unfortunately is only available on only one other FZ album (Make A Jazz Noise Here).

The song "Oh No" first appears here in an instrumental version...the vocal version would first appear on the "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" album.

It's difficult to fully enjoy the song since it is too short (the superior instrumental "Oh No" version is found on the concert album "Ahead Of Their Time") and it does not contain a separate cd track so that you can repeat it.

There is more talking in Part 2 and more Musique Concrete -- very fast experimental and disorganized musical instruments played together-- although one plus is that "King Kong" makes its first appearance here (the superior "King Kong" version may be found on either "Uncle Meat" or Jean-Luc Ponty's album "King Kong").

The instrumental version of "Take your clothes off when you dance" makes its premiere here but, again, it is performed better in later albums ("Ahead of their time" and "Lost Episodes").

The brief instrumental part from "Mother People" that occurs near the end of that song is heard on this album too (but it is not longer than the original and a longer version would have been fun to listen to and would have improved this album).

This is not a bad album but it can be considered the weakest FZ album of the 60's and the 2 long cd tracks is no help to its credibility either.

Many DJs were trying to do some magic to old classical famous jazz, such as Sarah Vaughan or Nina Simon. Unfortunately, I could not find good ones until I bought this CD. Jazzelicious did a great job on Sarah Vaughan's Lover Man. It could even be appreciated by people who usually do not like classical jazz. It is nothing but Club Music with a little bit of Jazz. He did the same to Blue Bossa by McCoy Tyner!

Collard Greens and Gravy are a melbourne Blues trio who play swamp delta blues. For a three piece the band can really wail. Ian Collard is easily Melbournes best harp player and does an exceptional job on this cd. This is their 3rd release and still stands strong next to their other wonderful cds. THis album is all originals but has three covers on it, done very well might i add. One might say that it is quite difficult to write orginal blues songs these days, but ian collard does a great job. This cd won an aria and it was very well deserved becuase this is a great album. For those who like delta swampy kind of blues this cd is a must have. Australia has never produced better blues. 5 out of 5 stars Best Garage Band I Have Heard In 25 Yrs........2005-01-21

First off let me explain, I am not knockin the boys from OK when I say garage band, since most of the bands I love sound like kick butt garage bands and they are no exception with the likes of skynyrd, hatchett, outlaws and blackfoot.

I have been keen on these guys for about three years and let me tell you this ain't country it is serious rock ( southern rock ). Cody and the band really get it right with soul gravy from the opening Number to the end Stranglehold, which I did not even know was on the CD but in a stoned state of mind after Too Far Gone was over while reading Jimmy Buffett a pirate looks at 50 I had no other CD on the player and was drifting thinking about my up and coming trip to Jamaica when holly S*#t I thought I had Terrible Ted on the player. If you like rock and I mean damn good rock and if you happen to be over the age of 40 or even pushin the under belly of 50 like some of us then this is a must have for your collection. Its what rock albums are supposed to be.

    5 out of 5 stars BEST EVER.......2004-07-13

absolutly great CD!! one of the best yet!! i like this CD a lot better that "purple" even. buy it you won't regret it, that goes for seasoned and virgin fans alike!

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Cody, Grady, Jeremy & Randy for this awesome release!.......2004-06-30

Just when you think you heard the best from the Boys from Okie. They kick it up a notch and leave you begging for more. Plus they love their fans and appreciate them. The hidden track "Strangle Hold" and the killer live free DVD is proof. I purchased, Soul Gravy the day it was released. Put it in my CD player, cranked it up and it's taken up residence in it. I have yet to get tired of repeat listening to and besides, Aerosmith's "Honkin'On Bobo" (Sorry got to plug it). Soul Gravy's my favorite release in 2004. CCR has it all. Excellent songwriting, song selection and the bands talent is amazing. Cody and Grady make a awesome guitar team on Lead & Rhythm guitar. They definately, deserve some attention in the Guitar Mags. Jeremy's awesome on bass and Randy's also awesome on drums. Reminds me of Tommy Aldridge after seeing them live. From the opening of Number, Again, Lonely Girl, Cold Hearted Woman, Sick & Tired, Hammer Down, Flowers, Leave Me Alone, Down, Wanna Rock & Roll, Alabama, Pay, Too Far Gone and to Strangle Hold's last note. I love each & every track on Soul Gravy, highly recommend this release and their's no skip songs on this one. Hopefully, they will release Strangle Hold as a Single. It's a awesome song and shouldn't be ignored. After seeing CCR, at the New Zellwood Sweet Corn Festival in Sunny/Hot FLA. I will never think of them a Country/Alternative Country Band. Because these guys are not only awesome live but they're a kick *ss Rock 'N' Roll Texas/Okie band. Lastly, with all my CCR reviews. Thanks to "the Dusty Show", for getting me hooked on Cross Canadian Ragweed.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD From a Great Band.......2004-05-23

I just got into Ragweed's music about four months ago and have already seen them in concert twice and I'm a huge fan. They're destined for fame; I believe it's only a matter of time. This CD has some great songs, like "Alabama", "Lonely Girl" and "Sick and Tired". It also has some songs with more rock roots, like "Again" and "Hammer Down". It reminds me of old Southern Rock, like Creedence and Skynard.

This is still better than average. After all, there are not many good Nu Jazz CDs today. Jazzelicious did a good job on Carmen McRae. It does not sound like old classical vocal jazz. Some people may think that it is not based on Carmen McRae, who is famous for straight vocal jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Not exactly 'Hooked On Classics'..........2007-05-07

Quite a find. My brother introduced me to this CD recently (even went so far as to 'burn' me a copy of select tracks), but I had to have a copy myself. If that isn't a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is...

As other reviewers have noted, this is a good CD to 'chill out' to, and it is interesting to hear the ideas that each separate classical piece inspired in the different DJs.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth grooves, almost flawless listening.......2007-04-08

If you're a fan of the likes of portishead, Massive Attack, Nightmares on Wax or Thievery Corporation or just someone enjoys cool low key funky instrumental tunes, then you will love this.

All the tunes are quite recognisable from their original classical incarnations (unlike some previous crossover classial pops which massacre the original). The only tune that I think falls somewhat short is Rihma's version of Swan Lake ( a decent jazzy hip hop version) which promises but never delivers the crescendo that tchaikosky's original waltz always built to and delivered in spades. However, my discrimination here maybe due to the fact that I have listened to the classical version by untold orchestras and this is the one part that never deviates.

This minor hiccup aside, I find it hard to pick a favourite track as they are all just so dammned good, even some of the less famous tunes which I had previously never been aquainted with.

This is a great chill out album I recommend it highly

    5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2004-03-29

I have never heard anything like this before! Remixes of classical masterpieces by Beethoven, Bach and others. Great beats, very intelligent, not over the top. HIGHLY recommended.

Just when i thought i wouldn't hear another album this year what would knock me sideways.......i was wrong this guy is currently working with KRS ONE at present, but back to this album its an eclectic mix of dirty low synth bass tunes a little like your strangefruit style sound, if you like Jneiro Jarel, Brother Dvooa, S.F.P, etc... you gonna love this although it's not strictly rap lyrics, this is spoken word (think Rich Medina, Ursula Rucker , etc..) all said and done you gotta check this brother out he's dope.

    5 out of 5 stars tha best.......2007-01-23

Rated as one of my all time best favorite lounge chill brazilian electronica eveeer... it's haunting chill and remote. It's just so cool. The melody's stay in your head. a really great compillation.

4 out of 5 stars Did you hear "One" on CSI?.......2006-12-29

Sometimes you hear the best music from the most unlikely sources--I heard the song "One" from Brazil Remixed on an especially spooky CSI. At first I did not recognize the song as Three Dog Night's "One" is the loneliest number, but when I did, this remix fit the CSI story to a tee. Great musical selection.

3 out of 5 stars My Songs are your songs? Song Swapping Gone Mad!.......2004-04-13

When I first saw this last summer, I was thinking "Man does this look familiar..." It didn't have anything to do with the music, but the cover - I knew I saw it before. And low and behold when I was home I pulled out this massive conglomerate of a 6 disc Decadance chillout compilation titled: "The Ultimate Chillout Album" and saw pretty much the exact same cover... just on a different wall. Seroiusly, have a look. B00006JSHV. Already you know this isn't the most original of releases.

Still, it's not a bad cd. You've got some lounge cuts, some bossa cuts, alternative takes and remakes and general feel good bossa and samba mixed in. Artists include Maya FS, Mo'Horizons, Da lata and many others as they mix and match styles and skills on this semi-mixed compilation. However this cd isn't without fault. I found some of the songs a bit annoying over time ("Fancy" and "One" come to mind) and the Italian bossa Buweyah seems like more of a "Sister Bossa" modeled track than this. And if you have heard "Cafe Samba", which has literally stripped off tracks from this compilation and put them onto that one, this will hardly sound new to you but of course that's at no fault of this compilation's own. Odd, but I know exactly what the previous reviewer meant when he/she said that a song was a bit embarassing as some songs seemed to force the Braziliance with cliche'd sounds and loops.

All in all, I would say this is a solid release but not one of the best I own. There are just so many nu-Brazil cd's out there - this is one I'd say to take a pass on if you're comparing with Brazilectro (usually 2 discs of good tunes) or Glucklich (mixed by Rainer Truby). But if you're looking and deciding between this and Cafe Samba I'd recommend Cafe Samba instead. IMO it has the better all around songs. The Italian Bossa mixes in since they went on and stripped cuts from Pyramide's Cafe Noir series... who of course stripped songs from Irma's "Sister Bossa" series. Talk about song taking gone crazy! So there are a few suggestions if you like this - but just watch the group names/song titles for carry-over before you buy any of them.

3 out of 5 stars silky tunes, lyrics questionable.......2003-08-12

I have quite a collection of songs in portuguese. Although this is Brazil remixed, the songs just don't quite make it. There are some cool songs, like samba numeiro 9 or felicidade, but number one has a great beat, but "one is a lonely number". It's a bit odd to listen to, kinda embarrassing.

Anyway, the tunes are silky, and soothing, but other cds are more effective. Maybe try Cateano Veloso for something real and Bossa Nova from Putumayo.

    5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2003-05-29

This is an impressive CD. Very melodic and sophisticated but still grooves nicely without sinking into "ambience".
    HIGHLY recommended!
