The title Different Stages certainly describes the career of the multitalented Sam Harris, the singer-writer-actor who has distinguished himself in a variety of mediums all over the world. This album was recorded in 1994, about when he was earning a Drama Desk nomination for his role as Doody in Tommy Tune's Grease, and accordingly, it celebrates the songs of Broadway. Sorry, fans, there's nothing from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but the too-brief 35 minutes does include some groundwork for his 1999 gospel album with an a cappella quintet rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone," as well as the rousing "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat" from Guys and Dolls. There are also some scrumptious ballads, including Harris's own "Never Will She Answer" (written with Bruce H. Newberg for Hurry! Hurry! Hollywood!), "A Quiet Thing" from Flora the Red Menace, and "Who Can I Turn To," which would be reprised with bombast on his 1997 standards album, also arranged and conducted by Peter Matz. 5 out of 5 stars ~ THE PRIMARY COLORS OF RUSH ~.......2007-01-31

You know it! Take it from this fan too, I saw them quite a few times back then and have heard every note on every release many times - THIS ROCKS! The version of each song is selected nicely and very strong, each disk is fantastic to me. None of the enthusiasm or talent is missing, you could even say they have just gotten better over the years. By the way, Alex Lifeson is one of the longest-standing and best arena-rock guitarists on the planet (have to leave room for other talented galactic string benders I may not be aware of). Neil & Geddy are still spoken of with that same regard as well. This bands impact is huge! Who said you slow down when you get older??? Just watch the Rush In Rio dvd if you need further proof ... the Vapor Trails material (the whole darned concert actually) on there shows a band just finding its higher self. They rocked Rio's world those two nights. The psychedelic connection has been strengthened lately too it appears, maybe a great new stage is about to present itself? One can hope. That Hammersmith disk from 78 is especially sweet, maybe my favorite single cd offered. I do have to say that this is a five-star release if there ever was one (in my opinion, I love it!). Enjoy on a BIG POWERFUL SYSTEM for full effect ~ ~ ~

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile If You're a Rush Fan.......2006-11-10

If you enjoy Rush's more recent albums, you'll like this one. But even though the band is playing their newer (relatively speaking) material, they seem to have gone back to a more classic live sound. This sounds more like what the All The World's A Stage band would have sounded like if they had played Rush's songs from the 90's. So it is more of a raw live sound. And it's also nice to hear them do some of their older songs like Natural Science that were previously unavailable in a live version (at least as an official band release). Also included is a live show from the 70's that you'll like having in your collection because you can see the band's progression from the 2112 era to the era of Exit Stage Left. There's so little of live Rush from the 70's!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A very fine live rush album.......2006-06-07

Different stages is a very fine live album from Rush who are amongst my favourite progressive rock bands after Yes and Kansas. This compilation of three cd's contain some very fine songs in Limelight,Bastille day and Xanadu. This is the Rush collection to get as it contains material from their Atlantic label also.Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars More Condescending Tripe From Rush.......2006-06-06

Look, I have never liked this band. Someone I know well and who's opinion about music I respect highly recently insisted that I listen to this new live Rush CD with the presumption that I would "come around" and "change my way of thinking about Rush" after a listen to it. It didn't work. I find the vast majority of this band's material to be soulless, progressive technometal slop. In their attempt over the years to come off as being intelligent and studied in their approach to rock music they have only succeeded, in my opinion, at producing thirty years of thoroughly mechanical, pretentious, condescending tripe designed to show off each member's supposed musical prowess which is then summarily topped off with "oh so deep" pseudo-intellectual lyrics designed to make 9th grade bongbrains feel as if they are smarter than everyone else because they are listening to it. It's never worked on me and as far as I am concerned this live CD set containing concert material spanning almost their entire career just reinforces my opinions about them. Sorry all of you Rush fans, I just refuse to be converted.

5 out of 5 stars their best live album.......2006-05-16

I bought this set because of the 3rd cd. Being a longtime fan, I was dying to hear a concert from the 1978 era. Rush originally lost me on Exit...Stage left. Great songs, where did the guitars go?. Then their material got limper and limper, bottoming out with A Show of Hands. Still, being a huge fan, I bought everything holding out hope that some balls would return. After brief glimpses on Roll The Bones and Counterparts I had resigned my fate to knowing that Rush was lame now. Then came Different Stages. After hearing the versions of their newer songs (Bravado, Show don't Tell, Animate) I regained interst in all of the post-Pictures material. The sound is excellent and brings life to the cold, sterile, synthesized versions from the studio. Great set list (especially when factoring in the 1978 disc), covering their entire career. If you own nothing by Rush, this would be good place to start (along with The Spirit of Radio greatest hits). Also, about the 3rd disc: it sounds very raw, like there were no overdubs or tweaking at all. Interesting, but a hard listen.

This c.d. is absolutely excellent!! I wouldn't have expected anything less from Sam Harris. The track Never Will She Answer is one of the best on the c.d. Very moving. A must have for Sam Harris fans!!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Talent.......2002-07-17

I love this CD--Sam is so talented and gifted, his voice is truly remarkable. "Never Will She Answer" is breathtaking! Sam really displays his talent in this CD. Buy it and you will love it!

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2002-05-31

Sam Harris has gift that can truly be attributed to a higher power. His voice and lyrics truly can change any bad, gloomy day into one of happiness.

5 out of 5 stars The Male Streisand.......2002-05-12

The collaboration with producer, arranger, conducter Peter Matz isn't the only similarity Sam Harris has with the icon Barbra Streisand. His tremendous range as a singer as well as his emotional delivery and phrasing make him one of the most dynamic singers of our time. This is one of the most satisfying, timeless recordings you could have in your permanent collection right down to the cover photo of Sam Harris by the late Roddy McDowall. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Purchase.......2007-07-12

Glenn Hughes is one of the best rock singers of his time. This cd covers his career pretty well.If you are a Glenn Hughes fan you will enjoy this cd.Even though the Trapeze and Deep Purple material is not the original recordings but is mostly live solo recordings it is still a very worthwhile purchase.Excellent musicians always accompany Mr.Hughes in all of his endeavours and this no different.Great songs and a nice booklet with some very interesting musical information inside.Enjoy this compilation it is worth the buy.

3 out of 5 stars Great Hughes Sampler!.......2005-09-15

If you're reading this, you must already know that yes this is Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple Mach III and IV fame, as well as former front man for Trapeze. I was looking for a representative sample from his solo career to decide if there were other disks I wanted to pick up of his, and I think I came to the right place.

Not sure if it's a blessing or a curse, but 6 of this 2 CD set's 20 tracks are remakes (mostly solo live in concert) of DP tunes (Burn, Highball Shooter, You Keep On Moving, Gettin' Tighter, Lady Double Dealer, and Strombringer), so you should be familar with some of the material already. Based on the liner notes, looks like all material on these disks come from 7 CDs: Burning Japan Live, Feel, Addiction, The Way It Is, Return of the Crystal Karma, Live in South America, and Building the Machine.

I would've liked to have seen a couple Trapeze tunes (or remakes thereof) on this, but it does have a live version of one of the songs he originally recorded with Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath (From Now On), and material originally recorded with Pat Thrall as well as Marc Bonilla, so this works pretty good as a sampler/introductory package to the music of Hughes.

I can't bring myself to give any 'Greatest Hits' package 5 stars, and let's face it this is not a classic. I'd have given it 3 1/2 stars if the rating system would've let me. Now if only Glenn would've put on a live version of 'Burn' showing he can sing without screaming, I would give it a 4. If you liked Dan Hartman's sampler CD 'Keep the Fire Burnin'' you should like this (very similar concept).

5 out of 5 stars (One of) my best top album.......2004-07-13

(Excuse me for my bad English) One of my best albums quite simply. Ok: it's a "best of". But it is also the best point entrance to discover Glenn Huges. That the excellent one on this double! Then, pass for example on "Burning Japan Live" or "DP: California Jam".
Quite simply: one very very great artist.

Those who know Sam Harris only as the original Star Search grand champion or maybe as a Motown recording artist might be surprised by this 1997 take on popular standards, but Harris graduated to a career in musical theater, including time on Broadway in Grease and The Life as well as a memorable stint as the title character in the touring company of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Standard Time collects 14 great classics backed by a full orchestra arranged and conducted by industry veteran Peter Matz. There's not a dud in the lot, but highlights include "Over the Rainbow," which provides a fresh take on one of Harris's signature Star Search numbers, and Anthony Newley's "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)," a naturally introverted song that becomes a bravura showcase for his brilliant upper register. The emotional heart of the album, however, is Harris's duet with longtime collaborator Laurie Beechman on one of the most romantic ballads ever written, "That's All." --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Well done, indeed.......2005-09-25

Sam Harris' work with the late Peter Matz is exemplary. Sam has an amazing instrument, which, I think, he's been guilty of misusing in the past (for effect), but under the masterful watch of Peter Matz, Sam shines.

The arrangements are all excellent and Sam's performances on these tracks catapults him to the top of the list of those people who CAN and SHOULD be interpreting the standards of the Great American Songbook. I challenge anyone to find a better cover of "Who Can I Turn To" or "Blue Skies."

He's grown into a great artist from those Star Search days and I can only hope that he'll find producers like the late, great, Peter Matz who can help him shine.

Buy this one and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE SAM HARRIS CD.......2005-05-14

I was first introduced to Sam Harris as most were through his winning year on Star Search. A good friend of mine, performed at many clubs in L.A. before managing a Cabaret in town. What a treat this place was. Seeing Sam Harris, Linda Eder and many others before hitting it big on stage. Met Sam a couple times at a couple performances. This CD reminds me of some of the performances I saw live on the Open-Mike nights. Wonderful.
My favorite song on this CD is Let Me Sing. What a fun uplifiting song. Always makes me sing along in my car. All songs and performances on the CD are terrific. Treat yourself to this CD - you will be pleased. I can almost picture them being performed live. I miss those days.

5 out of 5 stars A Super Job by Harris.......2004-06-02

I originally heard of "Standard Time" from watching Oprah Winfrey a few years ago. I have had this CD ever since. My copy has a song called "That's All" on it. I am really glad that I have that song, because it is one of my favorites on the CD. I have given this CD as a gift several times and recipients are delighted with it.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Exceptional..........2004-01-31

True to form, I'm writing this review probably 4 years after I first bought this CD; still, I felt like writing one. From the very first intro notes of the upright bass, you just know this album will be a good one. In the first song, "Let Me Sing", Sam gives us an introduction that seems to tell you he is only giving you a little bit of what is to come. By the end of the song, he's very well shown you by virtue of the range, variation, and ease of his production that he's has an extremely diverse instrument. In the second song, "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off", Sam is full of sass and verve; his lyrical change at the end is quite seductively comical. We then move into "Who Can I Turn To",a somewhat simplistic standard that Sam manages to make fresh. "That's All", the fourth track...this is my least favorite song, marred by the voice of some woman with Barbra Streisand aspirations. The fifth song, "Blue Skies", is an excellent cut, with an absolutely outstanding arrangement; I love the time changes and the bright brass. "Moon River", the sixth cut on this CD, is very pacific and soothing; the harmonica and guitar are the only two accompanists to Sam's voice. The seventh song is "Ac-cen-chu-ate the Positive", which brings us back up to the excitement level of the beginning of the CD; Sam really wails on this one. "Blame it On My Youth" brights it back down to a soothing lyric ballad. "Right To Sing The Blues/Stormy Weather" is one of my favorites; it's so bluesy and gut-wrenching, as well as fun to sing! "Scotch and Soda/Drinking Again" is probably the most theatrical song here, because of its story telling nature. "Over The Rainbow", Sam's signature song, is of course exceptional in its dynamic thoughtfulness and sheer power. "Sentimental Journey" is a great end to this CD, making you think at once of a barbershop quartet on the back of a train headed home. Overall, this is one of my favorite CDs; I recommend it to anyone who likes music.

            On This Night
Fans of Linda Eder's Christmas album will find plenty to enjoy in On This Night, the first Christmas album of Sam Harris, as the former Star Search star turned Broadway performer delivers a rock-solid and diverse 37-minute collection. There are a number of standards--"The First Noel" with a gospel choir, "The Little Drummer Boy" with tribal percussion, "Angels We Have Heard on High" in a rich a cappella setting--but Harris also contributes some originals: the warm pop tune "All I Need This Christmas," the rocking "Santa's Blues," the haunting title song (a lament for what has happened to religion since the first Christmas night), and the anthem "A World of Difference" (celebrating the global community). Back on more familiar ground, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," accompanied by piano, is sung with all the beautiful simplicity it deserves, before "O Holy Night," also with a gospel choir, provides a majestic conclusion. --David Horiuchi

            Different Stages
(Hey, we got all the way through this review without mentioning Star Search!) --David Horiuchi

            Album Description

TWO CD SET "On This Night" and "Different Stages" "ON THIS NIGHT": From the Artist, SAM HARRIS: This is a collection of traditional and original holiday songs that I hope capture not only the spirit of the season, but the hope and inspiration of our times. It includes the gospelized "The First Noel", the front porch home sound of "Chestnuts", "Little Drummer Boy" accompanied only by tribal percussion, a simple piano/vocal of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Angels We Have Heard on High" with me doing a five part vocal sound, and a choir infused "O Holy Night." I wrote four songs for the CD including the pop "All I Need This Christmas is You" (co-written with Todd Schroeder) which I recently sang on The Rosie O'Donnell Show, "Santa's Blues", "On This Night" about returning to the source of Christmas, and "A World of Difference", which I wrote about a new time of brotherhood and unity. I hope you enjoy it. - Sam Harris

DIFFERENT STAGES: Masterfully recorded with full orchestra all produced, arranged and conducted by the legendary Peter Matz (i.e. Barbra Streisand etc.). Features great selections of your popular classic Broadway standards.

5 out of 5 stars *** DO NOT BUY THIS CD HERE! *** .......2006-01-29

Third party sellers are attempting to make you think that "On This Night" is out of print and jacking up the price. So, buy it direct from Sam's official site for a normal price.

            Enjoy!

            3 out of 5 stars Not Sam's Best Music.......2003-03-09

I purchased 3 of these for myself, my mom and my sister. We all love Sam from the first moment we saw him on Star Search. I was lucky enough to see Sam on Broadway in a production called "The Life". I had tears in my eyes when he performed. I did not hear the CD before I purchased it and now I'm sorry that I didn't. There is only one good song on the disc. This CD comes out once during the holidays and I play the one song and then it's put away. I love Sam but for some reason this CD grates my nerves. Sorry! I know I was hoping for something better.

5 out of 5 stars Sam Shines With On This Night.......2003-01-14

This c.d. is awesome!! They best songs on the c.d. are the ones that Sam himself has written. The traditional Christmas songs are of course presented wonderfully as well. We have some great Christmas songs and then right in the middle of the c.d. Sam really heats things up with his words and his voice on Santa's Blues. Watch out ladies!!

5 out of 5 stars "O Holy Night" will blow you away!.......2002-11-13

Not in the Christmas spirit yet? Play this CD and you will be ready to put up the tree, hang the stocking and buy the ring for your girlfriend or boyfriend. I can't believe he can really hold that final note so long on "O Holy Night." A very satisfying Christmas CD. Get it!
