Birthday

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Released in March 1968, Birthday was probably the Association’s most pop-sounding album, as producer Bones Howe and the group polished their trademark harmony sound to a brilliant sheen. And, like on Insight Out, studio musicians extraordinaire Hal Blaine and Larry Knechtel lent expert accompaniment. The result was a pair of chart hits, Everything That Touches You and Time for Livin’, and another fine, if less ambitious, pop album. Also includes Come On In; Rose Petals, Incense and Kitten; Like Always; Toymaker; Barefoot Gentleman; Hear in Here; Time It Is Today; Bus Song, and Birthday Morning.

5 out of 5 stars I love the music on this disc.......2007-07-14

Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford are legends in jazz music. My favorite track on this disc is "I'm Sitting On The Top Of The World." Nobody could play the electric guitar as masterfully as Les Paul. Mary Paul's voice is so sensual on the track "I'm A Fool To Care." I love this track. "Tennessee Waltz" and "Vaya Con Dios" are classic romantic tunes. These tracks makes me think of someone special. "In The Mood" is another excellent song that puts me in a great mood. "Bye Bye Blues" is an uptempo track that stands out as one of the best here. "I Really Don't Want To Know" is a pretty song. I love the tenderness in Mary Ford's voice on this track. This disc is filled with great music.

This must be one of the best CD's available letting new comers to LP&MF hear some of their best tracks from the 50's and they have not dated since then. Unfortunately CAPITAL in their wisdom have omitted others which should have been included. I can name but a few:- La Rossita - Mac the Knife - Three little words - Magic Melody - Hold me in your arms - Old Mexico - What is this thing called love - Walking & Whistling Blues - I'm Jealous - By the light of the Silvery Moon - Chicken Reel. and I'm sure there's more. So it looks like we'll have to wait till Les reaches his 100th Birthday before we see a Box Set.
I am tempted to wait - that's if I can manage to live as long as Les. He's doing great, and I hope he will still be playing when he reaches 100! Well done mate!

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2005-11-02

The recordings sound very modern. You can't tell this wasn't recorded yesterday; just listen to the samples. Les Paul had an inimitable guitar style. The man was the master, and teamed with the easy, lilting style of Mary Ford AKA (Iris) Colleen Summers (who started out in Western music), how could they not score? This music, while a product of its era, is timeless. This is perfection. This is the stuff dreams are made of. I usually review Classical music, but what can be more classic than this?

I only regret that a box set is not available, since I love everything that Les Paul and Mary Ford ever waxed. A particular favorite of mine that is missing is the Hawaiian love song, "The Moon of Manakoora". It is every bit as beautiful as the version recorded by Alfred Ahola Apaka, the crooning voice of Hawaii, and is recorded better. There are other notable omissions that I won't tire you with here, but this is the best set available until a box set is released. Absolutely wonderful music making. Curl up to the fire and warm with it; You'll love how it gets you in the mood.

Kenny Burrell turned 75 on July 31, 2006. That night he finished a five-day run at Yoshi's in Oakland and then the next day played with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra in Santa Cruz. This CD commemorates the occasion with performances from both nights, presenting Burrell's sparkling guitar in settings that range from an intimate trio to fronting Wilson's 17 -piece band. The material reflects Burrell's long career and broad associations. Among the small group tracks, there's a beautiful quartet sequence of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," J.J. Johnson's "Lament," and Miles Davis's "All Blues," each demonstrating Burrell's consummate lyricism and absolute mastery of the mainstream modern. The big-band tracks pick up on associations with Duke Ellington, including the elegant "Sophisticated Lady" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," with the 88-year-old Wilson providing a sparkling foundation that has Burrell and company soaring. Best of all is the extended "A Night in Tunisia" with a septet that has organist Joey DeFrancesco and flutist Hubert Laws. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection is glorious!.......2007-07-23

This music begins my day in uplifting way. Each day a different piece catches my attention. I am so glad to have it.

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19

This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.

4 out of 5 stars Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20

I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-03

I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30

I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A blast of brass.......2005-08-18

I first encountered this on cassette, quite by accident. It later became the background for my work at morning at the easel painting watercolours. But this is no wallpaper music. The technical genius of matching separate recordings of different trumpet parts is surpassed only by Marsalis's bright and lively technique. The masters would be pleased. As for the watercolours, I can now stand before them and see the music's influence on paper. Well worth the listening...

5 out of 5 stars Old school Wynton.......2005-08-12

This cd features a lot of Wynton's earlier piccolo playing, which, while perhaps not as brilliant as you'd hear on his Gabriel's Garden album, is slightly more refined and appropriate to the repertoire. That isn't to say he doesn't embellish; The Fasch concerto has some tastefully inserted ornaments. "Let the Bright Seraphim" is as well played with soprano Edita Gruberova as it is in Wynton's later recording with Kathleen Battle. The Purcell selections on the album are probably the best examples of good piccolo playing I've found, particularly the trills. One only need listen to the "Entrada" to see how delicate and refined the playing on the whole album is.

    5 out of 5 stars fabulous.......2003-09-28

Marsalis' prodigious talent coupled with the greatest of Baroque brass composers is a combination that cannot be beat! Of course, Anthony Newman takes everything (less the slow stuff, of course) at his characteristic "lively" pace, but Marsalis keeps up. His execution of the ornamentation is awesome! Gotta have this one!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing talent.......2001-04-22

Without doubt, the birthday ode to Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine) is one of the loveliest pieces ever. Couple that with two of the most accomplished talents in the world, you have a near spiritual moment. Even those with even a passing interest in the classics will find this a stirring expierence. this is true candy for the ear and food for the soul.

4 out of 5 stars Very good and something special.......2007-05-14

This is the first album that I have ever bought, so it reminds me lots of memories from the past...how time pass too quickly !
This cd is a classic album for Uriah Heep, the band was at its peak !
All songs are magical with some special mention for "Echoes in the dark", "Rain", "Tales" and the title tracks. "The Magician's Birthday", these are favorite of mine.

    4 out of 5 stars Fine Follow-up Album!.......2005-12-22

"The Magician's Birthday" was the second Heep album by the classical line-up featuring Hensley, Byron, Box, Thain and Kerslake. It was also the second album with a Roger Dean cover. And moreover, it was the second album the band released in 1972.

After a long 1972 tour Uriah Heep were rushed back into the Lansdowne studios to record a follow-up to their break-through and much acclaimed album "Demons and Wizzards".

As Hensley states in the notes, they felt that were never really given the time it took to record the album, which was originally planned to be a "complete" concept album. Though it may have been rushed it nearly matches its great predecessor. The band, and especially Hensley as a songwriter, were at the peak of their creativity and many of these songs have become classics and favourites. The extensive list of bonus-tracks clearly illustrates what a great period this was for the band. Unfortunately the hard work took its toll on some of the band-members; but that's another story.

The first track, Hensley's dramatic "Sunrise", is the perfect opener, with great lead and harmony vocals.

Another highlight is the melodic rocker "Blind Eye", driven by acoustic guitars and featuring a nice twin-guitar theme; also a Ken Hensley song.

Two songs released as single A-sides were "Spider Woman" (Europe) and "Sweet Lorraine" ( America), and where the first is a rather traditional heavy-rocker, "Sweet Lorraine" has all it takes to become a classic. Great whining riff, fine breaks and a catchy chorus. Simply one of the most memorable Heep recordings; written by Box, Byron and Thain.

As the most versatile songwriter in the band Hensley also demonstrates a talent for writing melodic ballads such as "Echoes in the Dark" and the quiet piano accompanied "Rain" with great lead vocals.

"Tales" is the closest the band get to playing folk-rock on the record; another fine recording.

Though the title track has its moments, it somehow feels too longwinded with its ten and a half minutes playing time.

Among the bonus-tracks Gary Thain's "Crystal Ball" is a nice surprise; sad that his constitution was strong enough to take the strain of heavy touring etc.

Though not quite as consistent as "Demons and Wizzards" still one of Heep's finest albums.

    5 out of 5 stars Eclectic, Mystic-Sounding Heavy Rock/Protometal.......2005-10-19

One of the best albums from the early 70s/late 60s, back when hard rock and progressive rock were together forming an offshoot - along with influences from classical, eastern music (see Led Zeppelin), heavy blues and eclectic jazz (see Judas Priest's first album, "Rocka Rolla") and a host of other musicforms - to come up with heavy metal. Uriah Heep isn't really considered metal but 'protometal', but it's close enough to appeal to metal fans as well as fans of the late 60s/early 70s sound, hard rock & progressive rock, and quality eclectic music as well. This album is distinct mystical heavy rock, and a shining example of its type of music.

Uriah Heep tends to tread a lot of welcome fantasy-type ground, which is also covered here, but there are other themes here, like the vibe capturing the exhiliration of romance on "Sweet Lorraine" and the fearful doomy lyrics of "Tales". "Sunrise" is an alltime gem, fitting well into the beloved realm of fantasy-esque lyrics but in this case, for me, resounding even more powerfully with its combination of the 'missing love'/'undying love' themes. Great intro to the song and tremendous (and influential) musicianship all throughout. Title track "The Magician's Birthday" jumps from musical style to musical style within itself - including a part featuring what sounds like a kazoo! - although, regretfully, the coolest guitar parts on the whole album wind up representing the 'evil' part of the tale. Still exuberantly cool though. Musicianship and vocals great all through the album, with some of the best quirky-sounding synthesizer sounds ever laid down, doing exactly what a synthesizer generally does Best - not imitating other instruments but creating brand-new, usually bizarre, sounds you don't get off traditional instruments.

I should note that I noticed in the search engine there are new versions of this with bonus tracks out, which I couldn't review because I haven't heard them. Most of these bonuses are 'alternate versions' (sometimes 'single edits') of other Heep tracks but you still may wish to hunt down audio samples of the tracks represented on the expanded editions before deciding which version you want to buy. Now Hopefully, someday there'll be a big grand boxed set collecting All of Heep's rare tracks, but until then....

Whichever version you end up going with, you can't really go wrong with this. Great, emotion-spanning and inventive album whose vast influence will, unfortunately, probably never be acknowledged by professional critics but is no less vital for it.

4 out of 5 stars The best Heep.......2005-09-25

This cd is their best of their old ones. It encompases what they were. They were almost progressive and very much hard rock. They
sounded like Deep Purple and Sabbath at times. If they would have kept on like this album they would have gone extremely far.
After this they release some mediocre albums which didn't hold up to Sabbath or Purple. Then they got really bad.

But this cd rocks out totally. It brings back good memories
and all rockers must have this one in their collection. Heep
continues to rock but not like this album does, too bad Byron is gone because his voice inspired many metal vocalists like Dickinson ,John Arch and Rob Halford, what a shame

5 out of 5 stars Great Uriah Heep Album.......2004-12-15

THE MAGICIAN'S BIRTHDAY is a great Uriah Heep album. It's standouts are "Sunrise" and "Sweet Lorraine", but the other songs should not be counted out, either. The group would make one more great album, SWEET FREEDOM, before problems with bassist Gary Thain would derail them musically and commercially. Here, though, it looks as if they could go on forever.

4 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY, YOU MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING IN YOUR 30'S!".......2007-01-27

John Mayall's salad days back in the sixties were before my blues days. As the years went on, I had heard his name, but never associated him with any specific music. When I picked this up about 2 years ago, I was impressed historically, with the information he gave me in my quest for full understanding of the blues. For an electric blues fanatic, like myself, the short comments, John would make at the beginning of some of the songs, added to my knowledge of the early days of electric blues in Europe, and the impact of some of my idols like "Albert King", who John discussed in complimentary tones. John's voice at 70 was not blessed like the rocket fueled 70 year old voice of my man "Buddy Guy", but it's still pretty impressive for a man of that age. This is a 2 CD set so you get your money's worth. The way I break down my reason for a rating of 4 is thus: The music quality itself is 3 stars, the historical info adds ½ a star, and the fact that he's 70 years old, adds another ½ star, for a total of 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars just great - any blues fan will love this.......2007-01-19

Unbelievable energy - excellent sound - terrific playing by all - Buddy Whittington outguns Clapton - just great all the way thru. It is clear that all the players and audience love the guy on his 70th. He is having fun - thank goodness for John Mayall!

    1 out of 5 stars Stinky Blues.......2006-07-21

I own quite a few Mayall albums over the years and I must say that this one is a stinker. The tunes are wornout and sour-pussed. Mayall is 70 going on 99. His armpits are too sweaty to play properly. Upon hearing this lame attempt at music I wondered how this old man even managed to stand up for the entire performance. My bet is that it was two or three or maybe even five nights of performances whittled down to this gunk. Sometimes I wondered if Mayall was even on the album. Just [...]

    3 out of 5 stars Clapton a Disappointment.......2005-06-26

Eric Clapton is either the most hard headed guitarist on the face of the planet....or he just doesn't have a clue! What a fantastic opportunity, on Mayall's 70th birthday celebration, for him to break out his Gibson Les Paul and let us hear some of the old guitar tones and songs from the old Bluesbreakers LP that changed the face of blues/rock guitar back in the late 60's! This CD is ok, but could have been a milestone in blues/rock history.. Any Mayall fan will know what I mean. This was a great opportunity missed.

5 out of 5 stars Best live performance I have ever seen.......2005-04-01

Let's make a long story short--yes I definetely am a BIG John Mayall fan--this is the best Live Show I have ever seen- think of how complex Mayalls Music is, --more then just Jazz--Thanks for all, DR. John Mayall

    Album Description

A captivating hybrid of 80s electronica and aggressive guitars, curiously fused with a cinematic quality of melodic progressions. Their 2005 debut, "Violet" catapulted them into the hearts of not only electronic but rock fans as well. While the band works on their next album for late 2007, Metropolis is re-releasing this out-of-print, self-released 2002 record, featuring early versions of the popular tracks "Happy Birthday", "Horror Show", "Video Kid", "The Dream", and five unavailable since the band's release went out of print.

5 out of 5 stars TBM will go FAR!!!!! .......2007-07-30

the birthday massacre is not a band that has become "mainstream", at least not yet. and in a way this is very surprising because the talent is undeniable, and their sound so effortlessly unique that few bands are able to succeed at this, especially on their first try. most people aware of TBM know them through their album "violet," especially since THIS nothing and nowhere was out of print for quite a while, until its recent re-release. there are 4 tracks here already present on "violet," [[happy birthday, horrow show, video kid, & the dream]] although owning both albums is definitely NOT "a waste." the tracks that appear again on violet have a different sound, and sometimes sound more "polished" as in the case of "happy birthday." howevever, personally if i must choose between one of the versions of "the dream", i'd say i prefer the one here on Nothing and nowhere. the other tracks [[promise me, under the stairs, to die for, over, and broken]] are pure genius, and pure proof of TBM's ability to mix their sound amazingly well. TBM has often said themselves that they do not like to label their sound, and they are proud to have such a wide variety of fans, from goth to rock to techno/dance fans. i personally found "to die for" to be simply addictive and played it a few days straight non-stop. its mellow, dreamy and romantic state made me a bit melancholic, but in a good way. watch for the track "broken" which is an edgier TBM sound not found in any other track in this album. i'd definitely say it's the album's most "hardcore" track, if not of ALL the TBM tracks combined. it definitely epitomizes a cyber-goth club, at least to me!! this album is definitely something worth checking out, if not only to experience one band's talent and ability to mix such different genres.
my personal favs are to die for, promise me, broken, and under the stairs with my ALL-TIME TBM FAVORITE track being "happy birthday", the version on violet however. =) i am super-excited for their new album, "walking with strangers" which will be released on september 10 2007. they are touring as well this season, so be sure to check them out if you can!! they are one of the VERY FEW bands i know that try so hard to make their venues be for all ages [since they are aware that they do have younger fans too] AND which go for ridiculously affordable prices. LONG LIVE THE THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE!!!!! =)

5 out of 5 stars They have found the perfect niche.......2007-07-28

My comments are probably going to be about this band in general, as much as they referring to this album specifically.
First off, this band is simply amazing. They seem to have successully balanced every type of music that I like under the "rock" banner. There is some metal, industrial, 80's new wave melody, female goth. There is plenty of melody here that you can sing along to, but enough aggression to not worry about this being a dance-pop band. Chibi has a nice voice, but she knows how to play to her strengths. She is not one of those opera girls who like to show off, but she is not ultra-depressed either.
This album in particular leans a little more towards the industrial/dance side of the equation than Violet does. For example, there is no song that goes for the throat like "Blue" (but one could make an argument that "Broken" goes in this direction). However, there are lots of strong songs on here that were not on Violet. I would have to say that my favorite somg on here that was not on Violet is "Promise Me". This song has a certain sweetness to the lyrics, even though you could look at them as depressing too.
I wish more bands expanded on this type of sound, but that just shows you how great this band is. Overall, I can't say enough about TBM. Check out a couple full length songs on their my-space page. I think you will either "get it" or not immediately. If you are one of the folks who do, run out and buy Nothing And Nowhere and Violet as soon as possible!

Wow, this CD probably doesn't even need another review, but I had to chime in. I only just discovered this band, and I've been playing this CD non-stop! Its surprisingly what I might call goth-pop but I mean that in a better way then it sounds. The songs are catchy and infectious yet dark and layered. Just enough rock mixed in. If your a fan of Collide, or Switchblade Symphony you'll likely like this CD too. Check out their video for Blue on their myspace page. Creepy and cool! I'm an instant fan!

    3 out of 5 stars Handel's Greatest Hits.......2007-02-26

I found this recording disappointing in many respects. The sound quality was much lower than expected, especially on track 7 "Largo" which on the origional, Ormandy had created such a quiet grandeur. In trach 11 "Let the Bright Seraphim" Wynton Marsalis overpowered the singing of Edita Gruberova, whereas the music should always be the backup of the singer, and not vice versa. I don't know what happened to the "Hallelujah Chorus," but it didn't come off very well at all.

4 out of 5 stars Could use more oratorical works, but nice intro to Handel.......2001-08-08

This collection of George Frideric Handel's "Greatest Hits" leans more heavily towards "The Water Music Suite" than his oratorical work, which is my only serious complaint about this CD as an introduction to the composer's work. Although is does have "See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes" from Judas Maccabaeus and ends with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing the "Hallelujah Chorus," it does not have "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Messiah, which I consider a glaring omission. The "new" piece for me on this CD that is a nice discovery is "Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine)," performed by Wynton Marsalis and the English Chamber Orchestra.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! .......2007-05-31

Spectacular display of brilliance and harmony. Truly, two masters of their respective disciplines melding together to display flawless virtuosity. Wynton Marsalis not only tames the piccolo beast, but somehow expertly mimics the human voice. And not just any voice, but the bright edgeless tone of Kathleen Battle. If you love Baroque, at any level, this is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars My Birthday Present to me.......2007-05-29

Actually, I was driving and I heard it on the radio. Luckily, the radio station has a website to see what played at what time. After getting goose bumps listening to the little I did on my birthday, I knew I had to have it. Its since been downloaded on my ipod. If you want to feel uplifted, and joyous listen to this wonderful CD . Kathleen Battles voice and Wynton Marsalis trumpet playing is phenominal. My favorites are the last 7 or 8 cuts of the CD especially.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing voice.......2007-05-13

What an amazing voice this woman has. Pairing her with Wynton Marsalis was a match made in musical heaven.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2007-01-05

I heard cuts from this CD on the radio one early Sunday morning last year. Mesmerized, I ordered it and continue to be zoned out on this incredibly beautiful music masterfully executed by Marsalis and Battle.

5 out of 5 stars Battle and Marsalis scintillating and stunning.......2006-12-28

The making of this album was filmed in a wonderful documentary that brings to the fore the vulnerability and humanity of both artists. Marsalis and Battle are close friends, and the album itself is clearly a labor of love; Marsalis, who stopped performing classical trumpet in the late 80's, returned to the form when Battle was ready to make this recording.

The album is packed with regal music and royal performances. Bach's 51st cantata is particularly captivating, what with its technical demands and relentless pace. But Battle and Marsalis are able to derive strength and energy from one another in the film - through the difficult preparation process of confronting its daunting technical minefield - to realize a stunning result.

Bravo! Their contribution to the recorded corpus here is sublime.
