Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Some of the artists on this CD have had enormous success as recording artists(Carla Thomas with 23 singles on the R&B charts, Ann Peebles with her classic "I Can't Stand The Rain.") Cordell Jackson was an overnight celebrity as the "Rock 'n' Roll Granny" from the 1980s Budweiser commercials. Cybill Shepherd, known for her acting career, is also a fine jazz singer with more than a half dozen recordings to her credit. Jesse Mae Hemphill has twice won the Handy Award for Best Traditional Female Blues Artist(1987 and 1988), and Kallen Esperian is an international opera star. Several other women included on this CD have been actively performing in and around Memphis for years. Most have CD releases on independent labels, while a few have been signed to major labels during the course of their careers (Susanne Jerome Taylor, Gwin Spencer, Klaudia Kroboth, for example). In addition to these talented ladies, a virtual who's who of studio musicians are heard on this CD. ! This compilation encompasses four decades of music from the city that is the musical crossroads of America.
