Editorial Reviews

John M. Borack From Goldmine May 21, 1999
The Rubinoos Paleophonic Pynotic (CDLP-1970) Old power-poppin' soldiers never die; they just release the finest record of their 25 year career after a too lengthy absence from the scene. Former teenybop-pop stalwarts The Rubinoos sound anything but prehistoric on Paleoophonic; to the contrary, they've updated their joyous sound with more mature songwriting (no more tunes about "Arcade Queens, " thank you very much) sharing space with their trademark pitch-perfect harmonies. All of the things that pop fans have known and loved for years about the Rubes are still firmly in place: Jon Rubin's gorgeous, choirboy-like lead vocals, Tommy Dunbar's ace lead guitar runs (Dunbar may be one of the most underrated guitarists in the pop-rock world), Al Chan's beautiful background vocalizing, and Donn Spindt's tasteful drumming. Where the ante gets upped this time out, however, is in the songwriting department. Dunbar has written many a righteous tune in the past, but Paleophonic finds his songwriting chops finely honed, with each and every original cut here hitting the mark with unerring accuracy. Chipper, classic sounding Rubinoos tunes such as "Amnesia" and "No More Where She Came From" sit proudly alongside moodier, more thoughtful pieces such as the devastating breakup ballad "Early Winter," the absolutely gorgeous "Perfect Stranger" and the 1940s style harmony exercise "Life In The Slow Lane." Just to prove that the boys haven't gone soft, there's fun, fun, fun to be had (literally; check the instrumental break) in the good-timey "Pursuit Of Happiness," while the martial drumbeat powered "Gone To Seed" features a hilariously vulgar phone message. And while tacking on a surf music take on the Star Trek theme (titled "Surf Trek," natch) wasn't completely necessary, the rock-hard riffing of "Can I" and the Everly Brothers flavored acoustic charmer "You Don't Know Her" more than compensate. Impeccably produced by the late Kevin "Toy Matinee" Gilbert, Paleophonic is not only a fantastic pop album and the best ever Rubinoos release, it's a great record, period.

Product Description
The Rubinoos 6th album. It is very melodic pop, heavy on the vocal harmonies. 3 of their other CDs are available through Amazon.com Produced by Kevin Gilbert.

4 out of 5 stars Comeback record ALMOST matches the early stuff.......2003-09-17

The Rubinoos, after a misguided album (Party of Two) produced by Todd Rundgren, a couple of awesome rarities collections, and the Vox Pop side project (which is a must-hear), the Rubinoos come bouncing back with this ballad-heavy collection of pure pop. A diverse album that goes from heavy Who-styled rockers to 40's AM radio to traditional power pop, it occasionally makes you reach for the skip button on the CD player. Fortunately there's enough cool tracks to make it a keeper.

Best tracks:
"Amnesia" - WOW! One of the best all time 'Noos tracks, this is an A+++ pop rocker with a ripping solo and vocals that prove 20 years hasn't fazed Rubin's voice at all. Killer chorus!
"Early Winter" - Ballad with an uptempo chorus that sticks in your brain forever
"Perfect Stranger" - Could fit right in with those great 1950's prom ballads - an "Earth angel" for the 1990's.
"No More Where She Came From" - Ultra-commercial arrangement for a should-have-been hit.

"Cruisin' Music" - Top notch Raspberries cover that trumps the original because of the great production.

4 out of 5 stars They haven't missed a beat!.......2001-01-26

Welcome back Rubinoos. Some very good stuff here, although as others have said, a few tracks I skip right past. If you like the Rubinoos you will definitely like this album. If you like good rock roll from a versatile rock and roll bank, you'll like this. If you're tired of hearing the same stuff everyday get the Rubinoos. They are refreshing.

4 out of 5 stars RUBINOOS ARE BACK JUST LEAVE THE WIMPY STUFF OFF.......2000-06-20

I really like this record. AMNESIA is as good as a Power Pop record could be. There are just too many dull spots. SURF TREK is very cool with some nice vocals. Over all it's a great record. Just program out the slow songs.

5 out of 5 stars Reissue of latter-day Rubinoos classic.......2000-06-06

This is a reissue of the 1998 Pynotic release of the same name, adding two bonus tracks to the original and providing the distribution (courtesy of Varese Sarabande and its corporate parent) it deserves.

Coming after such a long band dormancy, one might have expected a nostalgic rehash that failed to capture the youthful exuberance of the Rubinoos' original 1970s power pop. Such expectations of failure, however, are completely dashed by this treasure.

Unlike so many regroupings, The Rubinoos have retained every bit of their original charm, and expanded it with a broader musical pallate and a maturing view of the world. Jon Rubin's voice is as expressive as ever, the harmonies just as tight and inventive, and Tommy Dunbar's songs as good (or better!) than those of 20 years ago.

If you loved the Rubinoos original unabashed power-pop, you're sure to love their latest. If you're new to the band, but have fallen for the works of The Raspberries, Big Star, Beatles or Beach Boys, you're sure to love The Rubinoos.

      4 out of 5 stars they're not geting older, they're getting better.......2000-06-13

It's been entirely too long since we last heard anything new from The Rubinoos. For those who may have missed out on the master popsters the last time around, the band sounds like a cross between The Raspberries, the pop side of Todd Rundgren's Utopia and The Knack. Originally formed in 1973, the band--Jon Rubin (vocals, guitar), Tommy Dunbar (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Al Chan (bass, vocals) and Donn Spindt (drums and vocals)--has an undeniable sense of genuineness about them. You can tell from the moment you hit the play button on your CD player that these guys are the real deal and not a bunch of wannabes.

The group's signature power pop/surf sound is displayed for all to hear on tracks like "Amnesia" (which features stellar drumming from Tos Panos), the country-ish "You Don't Know Her," and "No More Where She Came From" (with a keyboard solo from Kevin Gilbert, who also produced, mixed and engineered the album). One of the best tunes on Paleophonic is "Can I"--2:26 of pure power. The album isn't just a bunch of power pop songs though. "So Much For Fairytales" is a drowsy "Wicked Game"-like ballad, and "Life in the Slow Lane" is about as retro as you can get (complete with vinyl surface noise).

"Gone to Seed" seems a bit out of place here, but it's a cool tune nonetheless. Kevin Gilbert fans will recognize the phone message in the song from one of his last side projects, Kaviar. The biggest surprise (and undoubtedly one of the coolest tracks) on the disc was "Surf Trek"--a surf version of the Star Trek theme song. The acapella section in the middle of the song really gives the Rubes a chance to show off vocally. "Surf Trek" was originally the last song on the CD. Now that it's been reissued, there are two bonus tracks--"Independence Day" and a cover of The Raspberries' "Cruisin' Music." Neither track is essential (the album was great to begin with), but I'm never one to argue about bonus tracks!

Even if this isn't your type of music, there's a real sense of authenticity throughout this CD. Never once do you get the sense that they're just going through the motions here. This is energetic surf/power pop music played the way it should be. Highly recommended.
