Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. the beastie boys have done it again.......2007-07-30

a lot of people are basing this album on from their prevous popular albums like check your head, hello nasty (my favorite), 5 boroughs, ect. but there are a lot of ignorant people out there and dont realize that they have already made an album with just instruments called the in sound from the way out. and it was excellent and so was this album. put it on and just sit back and chill to it. the beastie boys do a great job mixing it up, which is one of the reasons why i love the beastie boys and one of the reasons why they are my all time favorite! its all about the music, a good band can make music with lyrics but a great group can produce music without lyrics. this album has been everything i have asked for, if you loved anything from the beastie boys, im sure you will love this. i know i did!

I would say if you are new to the band you might find this appealing. For me it was not the same as past musical experiences I had in listening to albums of the past, including several that came after the famous "Licensed to Ill" which I have heard is one of Capitol Records all-time best selling albums. This CD left me frustrated as I did not feel there was very much creativity at all. As they say; "to each his own" but I personally felt this CD was a letdown.

Picked this up, was so excited, first song...all insturmental...i was like ya cool, i dig, then next song...no lyrics, all the way through the 12 tracks. very dissapointed, sure the mysic is good, but thats not what makes the beastie boys the beastie boys. if you are eager to listen then give the sample on amazon a quick listen, chances are that is all you will need

Chill Background.......2007-07-27

The Beasties are always giving the people what they want. They may not know they want it but after you get it, you realize you needed it. This is one of those records. It's not anything ground-breaking but it is just what you'd expect form an all instrumental (that's right, no lyrics) record from them. This record is great to chill to or have on the background of any get-together. It takes you right back to the instrumental songs of Check Your Head and Ill Communication records but is totally all brand new music. Nothing here appears on their The In Sound From The Way Out Album but it is similar in it's construction. I enjoyed The Mix-Up and I hope you do too.

This ferkachte CD is barely worth the plastic it was printed on. How the Beastie Boys could have gone from the heights of Check Your Head and Ill Communication, and the ensuing instrumental mashup masterpiece The In Sound From Way Out, to this limp, soulless, grooveless piece of dreck is beyond me. Seriously, take it from one schmegege to another, you will not be kvelling when you listen to this.

Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. This is a great way to re-live the musical. And even if you haven't seen it, it's a great way to be introduced to the songs of Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. Wow! It's amazing all of the songs you recognize that have been re-done over the years. But the originals are always the best. Check it out!

The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

If you need some pointy-headed pundit to sell you on the merits of Pet Sounds, your money might be better spent on an ear specialist. Brian Wilson's gift to 20th-century music elevated this pop album into a beguiling musical and emotional cogency that still operates outside pop culture's fickle space-time continuum--and limited critical lexicon. There's never been another record to compare (Rubber Soul, its inspiration, is close; Sgt. Pepper's, its response, misses the point), and certainly no album has been as dissected, overanalyzed, and predigested for public consumption. In 1997 Capitol Records devoted an entire four-disc box set, The Pet Sounds Sessions, to its thorough deconstruction. The techno-marvel centerpiece of that project--the album's first true stereo mix, painstakingly conjured out of multitape session sources by producer-engineer Mark Linett (under Wilson's supervision)--was at once heresy and revelation. Now the label has gratifyingly seen fit to offer both mixes on a single disc (along with alternate versions of "Hang On to Your Ego," the original title of "I Know There's An Answer"), an idea that should please the orthodox and heretics alike. And while the album has always clearly been The Brian Wilson Show featuring the Beach Boys, David Leaf's concise new notes attempt to be more inclusive of a wider band perspective. The result (three of the five band members claim credit for the album title) sometimes resembles Rashomon. If Pet Sounds forever crystallized the band's various creative (in)differences, it also became Wilson's grand karmic joke on his band mates; its burgeoning reputation (Mojo magazine's panel of pop experts once elected it greatest album of all time) guaranteed they would sing its songs--and praises--until the end. Listen to the music, people...the MUSIC!!.......2007-07-31

I think that being included on virtually every modern top 10 list ever made carries with it the inevitable curse of people looking at each other and saying "what's the big freakin' DEAL?" I see this being the case with Pet Sounds. I have said many times before, and I will say it again, that comparing one artist with another is pointless. Can I understand why so many people compare The Beach Boys to The Beatles? Sure. They both were popular at right around the same time, and historically they inspired each other to try new things in their work. That, right there, is where all comparisons should end. First and foremost, The Beach Boys were not a rock band; they were a pop music group. I mean, Pet Sounds features more Timpani solos than guitar solos! They did not have the same aesthetic, they did not sing about the same subject matter, their songs were constructed in completely different ways. So why all this persistence in comparing Pet Sounds to Revolver or Sgt. Pepper? It's like comparing classical music with jazz - it just doesn't add up. In and of itself, without thinking about how great "Taxman" is, Pet Sounds is a truly enjoyable record. It's songs are immaculately produced. It's melodies are rich and textured. Lyrically speaking it may not have broken any ground, but I don't think that's what they were going for. I think the focus was on the music, and that's what we should all be focusing on. 5 stars.

Understanding "Pet Sounds".......2007-07-26

Some of the reveiws here in the place have seemed to not understand the reason why "Pet Sounds" rings abroad albums and is constantly in competition with various Beatle's albums as the "greatest album ever made". It is important to realize first and formost that albums, after reaching such a selection process and being moved into the higher tier of "greats" can not just be appreciated for their pleasing sound.

"Revolver" for example, has what ive seen many on here say "Pet Sounds" has: about one great song and three good ones.
now this is true in terms of "sounding lovely" but in terms of musical masterpiece this is not the case.

when i first listened to Pet Sounds, each song started and i asked myself "why am i listening to this?". but by the time each song was over i felt like a different person
the rich chord progressions illustrate the movement that words alone can not explain. Take for example the infamous "God Only Knows". It is a swirl of diminished verse with many inverted chords that keep the listener tagged through its bipolar verses... then the refrain of "god only knows..." is a rich set of major chords (A-E/G#-F#m7) followed by a m7 which is a major chord with a changed root. If i was to post the chords in verse on here it would look like higher math.
this is what the "genius" of Brian Wilson comes to.
When a musician heres an album a lot more goes into play than the sound alone. The technicality, a word oft thrown around yet seldom understood, is another window into the "what" of the song and sound and an explanation of the feelings.
Thus a song like "Thats Not Me" keeps it begging sensationalism not through its simplistic lyrics, but by balancing such simplisity upon a background chorus of percussive indecency... a strange combination that shows not only the narrator's desperation but also his frustration.

The only songs that shouldnt have been on the album from an outstanding standpoint would be the instrumentals...
not because they are free of genius or do not have a complex meaning... but instead because they do not fit the overall flow of the album.

my recommendation for anyone who buys this album:
you must listen to it more than once
the first time, other than a few songs, you will probably be wondering why anyone in the world would say this was the best album, let alone good.
but the more you listen the more you feel
the more the harmonies play the more you can understand

the lyrical meanings of the songs mean nothing when not compared to the harmonies beneath them...
imagine Wouldnt it Be Nice in Minor
that would change everything the song has ever stood for

also, Wilson's rythmic movement and enjambments should be noticed and the effect they have (such as in "Dont Talk") are astounding to the listening ear.

in conclusion
the reason this is one of the greatest albums ever, or possibly the greatest (i have yet to find few who compete) is because it is like a jazz album: it is a listening mans CD. if you just pop it in and lolly around you get nothing. Yet if you become involved with the music, past the normal level of casuality... a plea made by the BBs and the Beatles at this time... You will find what makes it the "greatest album" yet. It touches more than the mind. It touches the mind and heart, and will profoundly affect the way you hear things in the future.

Important, yes, great, no........2007-07-20

Just because something is important doesn't make it great. Look at our current president, important, yes, great, not hardly. Yes this album is good and Brian Wilson deserves praise, but let's not go overboard. Springsteen, The Beatles, and others not only have one, but more than one album better than this. You Still Believe in Me, and Don't Talk sent me running for the phone to call the suicide hotline. These songs don't evoke much if any emotion and are droning. There are some very good songs on this album (Wouldn't if be Nice, Sloop John B, God Only Knows, and a couple others are good) but to be a great album, shouldn't most, if not all, of the songs be great? 2.5 stars.

Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Together, in the Kind of World Where We Belong?.......2007-07-15

Your illustrious Seer is at the beach now. The warm sun and ocean breeze are invigorating. The white seagulls circle overhead (watch out!), and I have been busy all afternoon trying to build a summer sand castle for myself meanwhile sweating to death in this Seer's cape. They said the fabric breathed and would be good in all temperatures. They lied. And, aside from all that, just when I get the sand castle to a stately form, some freckle-faced, red-headed bratty boy comes around and knocks it down. I threatened to report him to The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Seers, however, an ice cream cone made him go away. Dealing with Guido has made me very adept in any situation. Now if only the tides would stop being a threat. Ah well..........
Anyway, I am in the perfect setting to examine the rewards of "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys. Much has been written about this seminal album. And why not? It consistently ranks in the top 10 pop-rock albums of all time. And rightly so if you ask me.
Of course, it wasn't greeted ethusiastically when it came out. At least not as much as their prior hits. Brian Wilson took the hit most of all. Probably unjustly. But time has proven that it was the right move and the right time. To most, perhaps a little early and maybe they would say the wrong time. But I would have to disagree with that. Brian was ahead of everything on the scene at that time. He saw that the music was changing. Plus, artistically, you can not stay in the same place. Artistry needs real growth. Meanwhile, the other Beach Boys needed more hits- and this is why the chasm happened.
But, lets get into this a little more. The Beach Boys were (and still are) the ultimate summer group. Songs about California Girls, fast cars, high school life, requited love, and teen angst, angst, angst. These songs were incredibly successful. But Brian knew that, as he got older, his audience were also doing the same thing. He wanted to try a new direction and add some sophistication. Looking back to 1966, this album is a monumental achievement- and remains so until this day. Sure, some may downplay the importance of this recording, however, that cannot eliminate the fact that it was a monumental change that influenced the musical landscape at that time forever. It is essential, and one of the very best.
But, getting to the main point. Brian Wilson was moving towards greater musical compostion and more adult and inner emotions on record. This was a mega step- and quite a risk at the same time. Most of the music is lush, well thought out, and instruments used precisely to get the right nuances that bounced around in his mind. Certainly the songs are confessional, i.e; "You Still Believe in Me", emotional, i.e, "That's Not Me", "I'm Waiting for the Day", and quiet, heartfelt romance, i.e; "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on my Shoulder)". One must, of course, listen to all the colours and passages in this music. All these songs have a way of revealing certain moods that marry the music perfectly. Beautiful lilting breaks, shifting meter, an array of musical instruments heretofore never thought of in the pop-rock genre. Excellent.
And songs? We are treated to different, but essential, gratuitous hits with "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Sloop John B". But more than this, Brian gives us 2 more considerable high standard gems. Yes. We get to "God Only Knows" which I nominate as the most beautiful song ever written in the course of popular music. Grandiose, glorious- I am fairly convinced that a higher power is somehow behind this remarkable song. Sweet, yearning, beautiful beyond compare. Angelic vocals as well. If anyone doubts Brian Wilson's genius, have them look to this song. Absolutely the highest gem. Then we get to the wispful "Caroline No". Brian reflects upon how time can change a relationship. He looks back to a time when his love was new and exciting and wonders why she changed. "Where is the girl I used to know"? He hurts badly from the change and yearns for a return to a satisfying relationship, knowing full well that it has changed forever. Listen to the end. A train in the distance, approaching at a rapid pace, getting louder, and then quickly passing by. A dog barks in the distance-urging its return. But it gone and then silence. What an incredible conveyence of mood this is for the ending. Superb.
In a way, the outtake of "I know There's an Answer" entitled "Hold On to Your Ego" to me, conveys the frustration Brian was going through in order to have the other members of the group in compliance with his new direction. But he knows he's alone and he knows that he's "going to lose the fight". Well, he may have lost it to them- however- he won the classic album. And we are all so much better that he did.
Now, I must go and make sure that kid isn't planning some new attack on my new home. I don't want to lose the fight anymore than Brian does.
In conclusion- a classic and a must have in any considerable music collection.

In a sense, The Warmth of the Sun is to 2004's double-platinum Sounds of Summer as 1975's Spirit of America was to the previous year's chart-topping Endless Summer. Both Summer compilations feature the obvious hits, and their followups collect less famous--though still worthy--tracks like "Hawaii," "409," and "Little Honda." But the 21st-century collections are sequenced by the Beach Boys themselves, and that means this volume's songs are second-tier in fame only. Do you know how long it has been since the Beach Boys released an album with new original material? I do. That would have been in 1992, fifteen years ago, when they released the totally execrable "Summer in Paradise," an album so bad that it could have been recorded by Aleutian Eskimos pretending to be the Beach Boys. Do you know how many compilations or collections of old material the band released since then? I do. If you include imports and all of the collections that they licensed to others, there have been 101 separate releases. That is not a misprint. In the past fifteen years, one hundred and one cd's have been issued containing recycled material. While Mike Love and his cohorts complain about (and sue) Brian Wilson in absentia, they write nothing of consequence, but repackage everything they can get their hands on, especially the stuff that features the real mainman, Brian Wilson. I can understand when an old band tries to coast on its reputation, but 101 re-packaged pieces of product is so far beyond the pale and so abusive of the band's core audience that it's a wonder anyone cares any more.
I, for one, cannot review "The Warmth of the Sun" on the merits of its songs, because it would be painfully redundant to do so. All that exists here are a few classic tracks intermingled with a few obscurities. As a rule (and especially when applied to the Beach Boys catalog), the more obscure the tune, the worse it is, and this collection practically screams that point. So, why would you buy this collection? I don't know. Maybe if you never bought a Beach Boys album in your life, this would be worthwhile, but with 101 other compilations to choose from, I see no particular advantage for this specific collection. Perhaps you are so masochistic that you feel compelled to buy anything that has the band's name attached. If so, I feel so truly sorry for you, as well as your ex-wife, your estranged children and your mortgage company.
Meanwhile, Mike Love is probably sitting at home right now, arranging the next batch of songs for next week's compilation. That can't be healthy for him, so let's do him a really big favor. Let's ban all future recycled collections credited to the Beach Boys. If our goal is achieved, we might force Mike to do something with an iota of creativity attached. Wouldn't that be nice? Interesting Album.......2007-07-14

This album is not just another collection of Beach Boys Greatest Hits. These are alternate mixes (not remakes) of many of their best-known songs. A few are not quite as good as the original mixes while others are superior. In any case, it makes for an interesting experience, listening to our favorite Beach Boys tunes from a slightly different perspective, sort of like sitting in a different part of the auditorium at a concert. The recording quality is very good throughout. I was not disappointed with this CD.

There are very few really good songs on this CD. Most of these songs must have been the "B" sides of thier hit records because neither I nor any of my friends had heard most of them. Even after listening to the CD several times, it still didn't "grow" on me. I real waste of money.

Now this is more like it. A song-by-song retort to fans who might confine Wilson to some trailer-park queendom and to critics who might dethrone her for All Jacked Up, a half-hearted, hurried sequel to her quintuple-platinum debut, Gretchen Wilson's third album fires on all radio-ready-honky-tonk-and-hillbilly-rock cylinders. It's also a portrait of a tough, talented woman making her own way in what's still largely a man's, man's country world. She gets plenty of help from hot Nashville writers John Rich, Rivers Rutherford, and Vicky McGehee, but her working-class and feminist spin on country archetypes--temptation, whiskey, work, and Mom--is authentic and her own. Even when, as on the title track, she revisits "Redneck Woman," she retools the conceits with one of her best melodies. When she goes for the throat on "You Don't Have to Go Home," with a ripping fiddle line and an AC/DC guitar break, she's not just wailing last call: she's showing the whole honky-tonk who's boss. She still loves classic rock boogie--"Place in the Whiskey" quotes both Bob Seger and the melody of "Call Me the Breeze"--but she counters all the butt-kicking with solid ballads like "Heaven Help Me," "Pain Killer," and "To Tell You the Truth," her most heartbreaking and honest lyric. Funny, feisty, rocking and, best of all, true to herself, Wilson didn't really need a comeback album; nevertheless, she's made one that brings her all the way back. --Roy Kasten

Underrated, but another fine Gretchen Wilson album.......2007-07-23

A little background before I ever review ONE OF THE BOYS for itself. Bear with me.

Honestly, this isn't the way it should've gone down for Gretchen Wilson. When HERE FOR THE PARTY bowed in 2004, it was the most (or atleast one of the most)anticipated country album(s) of the year. It slid in behind the unstoppable Usher who'd had the no. 1 spot locked for several weeks and sold 228,000, not bad for a debut artist. It spawned the massive crossover hit "Redneck Woman", which peaked in the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, a very esteemed achievement for a country single. It propelled her debut album to multi-platinum status - approximately 4 million sold in just the U.S. alone. With the processes of propelling a debut artist to success with here debut album, all looked like it was set it stone that Gretchen Wilson was country's next big superstar in the league of Faith Hill or Shania Twain. Then 2005's ALL JACKED UP arrived to debut at no. 1 with 264,000, more than here debut. However, the "Redneck Woman" styled single "All Jacked Up" failed to rack up reviews even close to that of the single that made Gretchen Wilson, well Gretchen Wilson. Sure, the album didn't go unnoticed in the sense that it didn't sell, but how does 1.1 million compare to 4 million. Making a promising career's problems worse, ONE OF THE BOYS just maybe the sinker. With a tepid no. 5 debut and a devastatingly low 73,000 copies sold, first week sales and follow-up week sales of this fine country album by Wilson have been disappointing.

Sure, ONE OF THE BOYS is a credible, strong effort. But ONE OF THE BOYS lacks two things that made even the underrated ALL JACKED UP a moderate success. One, it lacks "Redneck Woman" which will probably never be replicated by Wilson, ever and two, it lacks anything that remotely sounds close to "Redneck Woman". Even ALL JACKED UP had "All Jacked Up", despite how unnoticed it ultimately went. It's that 'bad-girl' appeal that Wilson had on HERE FOR THE PARTY that disipated with her forthcoming albums that lost some of Wilson's fans. That coupled with the growing devastation of album sales has practically sunk ONE OF THE BOYS. Enough chit-chat about commercial success, let me discuss the album itself.

The album opens with "Girl I Am", which is solid G.W., though not as energized or as exhilarating as the openings of previous G.W. albums ("Here for the Party" and "All Jacked Up"). Vocally, Wilson is great and there is still an air of catchiness as Wilson sings lines like "I don't ever make apologies/ because I don't give a damn..." which leaves hope to the fans that left Wilson that the 'redneck woman' is still in her. "Come To Bed" features John Rich from none other than crazy country duo Big & Rich and the blend is magnificent between him and G.W. The songwriting is top-rate and the hook is more accesible for singing along here than it was on "Girl I Am". Sure, it isn't the second coming, but what is these days? "One of the Boys" serves to buck the trend with title-tracks and despite its conservative tempo, the songwriting is ever vigorous with its comical overtones and Wilson as always is at her best, 'redneck woman' or not. Three for three ladies and gents.

"You Don't Have to Go Home" is the best track up to this point from ONE OF THE BOYS with its country-rock feel and sick guitars. Despite the repetitive nature of the track, it keeps the air of 'traditionalist' country alive and that is very important. "Heaven Help Me" shows an even mellower Wilson (which seems to be an adverse effect for some fans unfortunatly) backed by acoustic sounds of piano, guitar, and strings. Despite her mellow turn, the bluesed-out "There's a Place in the Whiskey" is more production than vocal, but it is a welcome addition to G.W.'s catalogue of songs. Sure it's a bit too busy, but none can deny the potent nature of the blues licks. "If You Want A Mother" is solid while "Pain Killer" is a bit awkward, though still a solid track. What is notable about "Pain Killer", which is by no means my favorite track, is that vocally Wilson is at her strongest and the songwriting is nearly flawless. Eight for eight and still going strong.

"There Goes The Neighborhood" is a personal favorite of mine once again employing blues-influenced riffs. "Good Ole Boy" uses 'cutesy' songwriting, which the unstoppable G.W. pulls off perfectly. Finally the closer "To Tell You the Truth" is heavier in its overall tone as Wilson tackles serious songwriting, which may/may not be a hindrance. It isn't catchy like the rest of her tunes, but if you commit yourself as a true Gretchen Wilson fan, you will appreciate the message and the idea that Wilson is trying to emote on the closing track.

Overall, ONE OF THE BOYS would be a fine album if it was another country artist besides Gretchen Wilson, which is unfortunate. No, it isn't as memorable as her first and maybe in some respects as her underrated second, but it is still very fine in my eyes, despite what the charts or anybody says. I hope that ONE OF THE BOY'S commercial woes don't sink the career of a very promising, young country star. 4 stars.

I just received the very late e-mail saying that the
order I placed on JUNE 6, 2007 cannot be filled until OCTOBER 4,
2007. This is the most irresponsible customer service that I have
had in a very long time. Not only did you fail to correspond with
me for nearly two months, you now have the audacity to suggest that
the earliest you can deliver this book is the fall of this year!?
This irresponsible (and flippant) response is breathtaking in its
cavalier attitude, where you say "either accept a delivery date four
months late or we will cancel your order". You should have
responded within a week at the most that you were having difficulty
obtaining the book so that I would no longer rely on you to get it
to me and I could then look elsewhere for it.

(and I believe I already paid for) ASAP. You could do a Google
search and find a copy (perhaps on your own site!) or you could call
the publisher in China and (at your expense) have them FED-X it to

Huge Disappointment.......2007-07-15

This review is for the American CD. I loved the movie and after viewing it for the first time immediately watched it again. I read on this site that some listeners were disappointed with the soundtrack, but I couldn't resist purchasing it anyway because I couldn't live without the Billy Mack song. Given the subject of the movie, I will call the CD a "heartbreaking" disappointment. The three Christmas songs are included here, but are listed as "bonus tracks," which indicates that the director of the movie didn't understand what the audience wanted from the soundtrack. "All I want for Christmas is You" and most especially Billy Mack's song "Christmas is all around us" are not just seasonal holiday songs within the context of this movie--they are the ultimate love songs. Everyone in the movie was great, but can there be many viewers who didn't feel Billy Mack was the center of the story? Yes, little kids with crushes, a widowed man who apparently finds another love quite quickly (Claudia Schiffer to boot), and young couples getting together are all very sweet. But the heartbreak of unrequited love, a married woman who realizes her husband is thinking about another woman and Billy Mack save the movie from being just too cute. Billy Mack was a mid-fifties, superficial, "ex heroin addict struggling for a comeback at any price" who figures out what love is and shares it with another human being, albeit not in a romantic relationship. Billy Mack (along with the unreturned love story line and the Emma Thompson story) lifted the movie out of the realm of cliches. The movie starts with Billy Mack and his song, which underscores the struggle for love that everyone in the movie is going through. But the song was gutted of its joy in the soundtrack version--very little use of the backup singers. Instead of including tracks that I don't think were even in the movie, this song should have been played at length, perhaps in two versions. The beginning of the movie with the song and the conversational interjections would have been a creative addition to the soundtrack. Another song gutted of its joy is "All you need is love"--the surprising and lovely orchestration in the movie was replaced with trite clapping on the soundtrack. At least the director couldn't mess with the Beach Boys and Joni, whose song underscored the tale of marital infidelity. But if you want to experience the joy of human beings taking the risk of "getting the s*** kicked out of us by love," watch the movie again. Don't waste your money on the soundtrack. When will directors figure out that audiences want the sound tracks just as they were in the movie?

No need for much analysis here. An excellent Beach Boys compiliation. It's got all of the radio hits, the fun in the summer in the 60s. Maybe that's why "In My Room" and "When I Grow up to Be a Man" aren't here, which is because they're more thoughtful and introspective. Too bad, but what's here is excellent, great ambassador from its era.

This album brings together all the all time favorites from the infamous Beach Boys. The classics like Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, and Good Vibrations are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as if you live right there, ten feet from the beautiful ocean. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.

Despite not even charting in the band's native England, this album became a platinum-selling American hit on the basis of three enduring FM radio staples--the expansive, jazzy impressionism of the near-12 minute title track, and the more straightforward funk of the R&B charmers "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" and "Rock & Roll Stew." Those disparate tracks perfectly underscore Traffic's rich musical appeal and its restless, sometimes problematic creative and interpersonal relationships. With now thrice-departed Dave Mason out of the mix and percussionists Jim Gordon and Reebop Kwaku Baah participating in the studio for the first time, the band's innate musicality truly takes wing. As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Released in February 1971, "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" would enthrall the listener for the duration of the forty-minute journey. It wasn't another record to play but one to study, digest, and rarely file away.

From the opening notes of the beautiful "Hidden Treasures" Traffic had captured our attention. As they commandeered the ride, nobody was looking to escape. The title track is twelve minutes but the message lasts forever. Remember the first time the lyrics hit you between the eyes without warning?

The percentage you're paying is too high priced
while you're living beyond all your means.

And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
from the profit he's made on your dreams.

"Rock And Roll Stew" changes the direction. The tune is upbeat and full of power and passion. With a great mix, you can enjoy Winwood's tremendously tasty guitar.

"Many A Mile To Freedom" isn't only track four of the recording but one of the most overlooked songs of the era. The lyrics are delivered with the skill of a master artisan and the music blends flawlessly. If your original vinyl copies had holes in the grooves, you were not alone!

"Light Up Or Leave Me Alone" is well constructed. The musicianship is clearly detected. Although Dave Mason wasn't part of the session, the band took anything but a defeatist attitude.

"Rainmaker" unfortunately is the finale. The lyrics and music seem to create majestic visions. Listen intently to understand how Chris Wood enhances the recording.

The remaster with the bonus track gives you the single version of "Rock And Roll Stew." Call it a midnight snack after a 5 Star meal.

Always a pleasure to listen to. This is an album which ages gracefully, and the instrumentals are always a pleasure. Those guys really were wonderfully musical and extremely talented.

Original Albums.......2007-05-11

Ever order a "Best of..." or "Greatest Hits of..." album or set and found yourself totally bummed out. Some musicians seem to produce albums that are more like works of art that can be only viewed/heard in their entirety. In cutting them up and reeditting, they loose too much. There are a lot of examples and this album I believe is one of them. If you want "Traffic" as part of your classic rock music library, buy this album.

1971 was a fine year in music, indeed. "sticky fingers," by the rolling stones, the fourth led zepplin album, rod stewart's "every picture tells a story," "who's next," by the who, gene clark's white light album, john prine's debut, the doors "LA woman," and this great album, traffic's "the low spark of high-heeled boys." folk-rock, prog-rock, prog-folk, this album is hard to categorize. there's some jazz fusion in here, too. in fact, several musical passages have a feeling that's similar to the textures employed by miles davis on his classic albums "in a silent way," and "bitches brew." the album starts off with the haunting enchantment of acoustic guitar and flute on "hidden treasure." it's a beautiful folk melody and sets much of the tone for what will follow. the title track is an epic prog-rock piece with surreal lyrics that starts with a saxophone intro and builds steam slowly, intently. piano chords and notes drop in on this track that very much resemble the miles davis work i mentioned. dreamy instrumental passages stretch out the landscape, making this a long, gorgeous song. great music. track 3, "light up or leave me alone," is a song with a funky beat and some hot guitar. it's followed by the bluesy rocker, "rock & roll stew." "many a mile to freedom," is a folk-rock anthem, sporting an outstanding percussion track, on which flute and some more great guitar drift. "rainmaker," has a hypnotic percussion track that the rest of the instruments ride on, as well. it's an entrancing song, and a great finish to a great album. a must have for all rock and roll collections.

The Best of the Best.......2007-01-11

This is the best "traffic jam" you'll ever encounter. Good old get-up-on-your-feet rock and roll. This could be one of the best albums of the early '70's. Excellent musicians, great music, well produced.

California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. But this debut CD by the San Angelo, Texas band Los Lonely Boys might herald a changing of the guard. This is truly a band of brothers, led by guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playing siblings Jojo and Ringo. Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But after the release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love and life combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B. Nelson helps out on guitar, with Reese Wynans on keyboards. Produced by Keb Mo and B.B. King producer John Porter, the music is honest, driving, and down home, especially on the organ-filled uptempo tracks "Senorita" and "Tell Me Why." The stinging guitar solo on the Afro-anthemic "Onda" recalls the '70s grooves Santana built his chops on, while "The Answer" and "More than Love" are raw power ballads that show off this group's dynamism and diversity. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

A great album, although not quite living up to the hype imho. I think a better producer could have gotten more out of these very talented boys. The bonus video is great - the guitar player has loads of talent. Wish he would have demostrated more of that "less refined" playing style on the CD.

I recently saw them in concert and they just blew me away! Listening to this CD just brings back the power of talent I discovered at their concert.I thought Heaven was great but hadn't listened to their other tracks and every song on this CD is really high caliber.They are true musicans. I can't believe how talented they are at this age. Track 8 Onda is my favorite! It moves me and reminds me of past, present and future. Past greats SRV,Santana, their present greatness & their wonderful future to come!

Texas Trio Takes Tex-Mex To Top.......2007-06-07

Awesome music! My sister-in-law, a native Texan, turned me on to Los Lonely Boys a couple of years ago, and I haven't missed an album since. They have such a unique sound with a blues, Tex-mex, rock 'n roll mix that sets them apart from the crowd. I here the next Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, Jimi Hendrix kind of talent coming from Henry Garza. And Ringo and JoJo can hold their own with many musicians playing much longer. I hope to be listening to Los Lonely Boys for many years to come!
