Bell displays Davis' estimable wordplay, intellect, sense of humor, Buddhist philosophy and earthly fears.

Product Description
A concept album about the feminine divine, inspired by his wife and unborn daughter, "Bell" displays Davis' estimable wordplay, intellect, sense of humor, Buddhist philosophy and earthly fears in a sweeping, visceral roller-coaster of a listening experience. The new disc features the songs Belle, Sexy Messiah (listen), Karma Pyre, Dharma Drama, Human Girl, Smoke, IS, Flower Of A Zero, Wizard, Original Face, The Glimpse, Ara Belle, and explores themes of the feminine divine in general, and Dakinis in particular. Stuart himself ranks this as one of his very best albums to date, and its potent amalgam of sex, God, and Rock 'n Roll already has saints and heretics spinning ecstatic-like.

Like Wicked, this show is a girl-friendly extravaganza; the main difference--and it's a big one--is that the score of Legally Blonde is better. Based on the hit Reese Witherspoon movie, the zippy, frothy show tells the story of SoCal, pink-loving sorority girl Elle Woods, who enrolls at Harvard Law and goes on to prove that appearances can be deceiving. The opening number, "Omigod You Guys," gives an idea of what the Broadway-pop score by Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy--The Musical) and Nell Benjamin is up to, embracing its over-the-top cheer with goofily infectious energy. Sure, a couple of numbers feel a bit derivative (the show with the witches has "Popular," this one has "Positive"), and the Celtic detour ("Ireland") is rather puzzling, but overall the songs are firing on all cylinders. Just check out the use of a marching band on "What You Want" for instance. Laura Bell Bundy (Amber von Tussle in Hairspray) is a charming Elle, and she delivers numbers such as "So Much Better" with the requisite elan. But this is not a one-woman show, and Bundy is surrounded by a crack team, including the endearing Christian Borle as Elle's love interest Emmett, power-piped Orfeh as hairdresser Paulette and up-and-comer Leslie Kritzer as Delta Nu's Serena. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars So Much Better Than Expected.......2007-07-31

This 2007 musical version of the Reese Witherspoon film is energetic, light-hearted & fun.

While I enjoyed seeing the production (starring the terrific Laura Bell Bundy), the score seemed somewhat unmemorable - until I got the cd. Some of the songs work better on stage (ie. "Bend and Snap"), but after a few listens, several of the songs emerged as favorites:

Omigod You Guys
Ireland
So Much Better
Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde Remix

This is not meant to be a thought-provoking show - just one to smile.

1 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2007-07-30

When I saw the show in the San Francisco previews, I thought it was one of the best shows I had ever seen. It was so good that I saw it twice (would have gone a third time, but ran out of time). The show is one of the most uplifting shows out there. The very first number in the show, "Omigod You Guys", starts on a very high energy level, and remained that way throughout the entire show. So, as you can probably tell, I was eager for the cast recording to come out. I purchased this album the moment it came out. I was so ecstatic. But to my dismay, this cast recording just did not do this amazing show justice. Instead of the songs having all the energy of the show, they became so mellow and down right boring. Not to mention that they took out one of the better songs, "Love and War", and replaced it with a much mellower song, "Positive". On top of it all, the actual music does not sound like it was done by and orchestra, but rather a cheap synthesizer. I had such high expectations for this cast recording because of how amazing the show was in San Francisco, but was extremely disappointed. The only reason I listen to this is because it is better than having to find some cheap and illegal recording someone did in the audience.

best show ever practically!! LBB shines along w/ Orfeh & Nikki Snelson!!
Christian Borle was meant to play Emmet alng with Miachel Rupert as Callahan!!

5 out of 5 stars Nonstop Fun!.......2007-07-28

I saw this show while it was in previews in San Francisco. I was not disappointed. The show is fabulous, everything a musical comedy should be: upbeat, entertaining and fun. Plus, the music is great too. I play this cd in my car over and over again, and I'm still not sick of any of it. I don't agree that the score is better than Wicked, but like Wicked, all the songs are good. "Ireland" and "There! Right There!" are a little random, but Orfeh nails Paulette and I can't help laughing everytime when she says "Celtic Moods!" Laura Bell Bundy brings her own personality to Elle and it works. Trust me, you won't be able to get "Omigod you guys" and "So Much Better" out of your head! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly great score.......2007-07-27

I heard some time ago that Legally Blonde was in the works for Broadway, and I won't mince words: I had no hopes for the show. But on a whim I decided to give the score a listen, and boy, was I surprised. Let's be clear here: I am not a female, nor am I a teenager. I'm ambivalent about the 2001 movie. I hardly fit the target audience. But, inexplicably, I love it.

The composing team behind Bat Boy: The Musical are back, and they've brought their skills to the next level. True, Legally Blond is all bubblegum pop. But it's cleverly constructed, constantly energetic, and just plain catchy as hell. The title song, "Omigod You Guys" sticks in your head like crazy. But that's a good thing -- if you're willing to laugh a little. Sometimes musicals are too serious for their own good. Who says we can't have a little fun?

With a few minor exceptions, the songs are very well-crafted. It takes a few times through before you catch all the lyrics -- they come at you fast! -- so there's a lot to enjoy. And just when you think the composers are following the melodic pattern you expect, they change it -- for the better. True, you have to be paying attention to catch those moments, but they're there if you do. As a composer myself, I was surprised at how intricate the pop melodies actually are if you know what you're listening for.

If you have a sense of humor and like good catchy music -- if you hated Wicked, leave now -- you'll definitely love Legally Blonde.

Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Romance of the Violin.......2007-07-16

While it's not my very favorite Joshua Bell CD, this is a pleasure to listen to!

4 out of 5 stars End of the Day.......2007-06-08

I am a Joshua Bell fan, and this album is the one that I enjoy with my dessert, it calms me at the end of the day, and makes me think of my 6 year old granddaughter's visit. She has to have music on during meals at her home. Usually it is some kid stuff, but I do not have anything like she has at home, so I chose to play Joshua Bell during our dinner. When I placed the dessert before her, she looked up at me and said: "This music is so beautiful, I want to play the violin just like that". What more could I say.
He is inspiring, and she is right. This album is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-30

I play this for my grandson to nap by. It is so relaxing and wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Over and over and over...........2007-05-17

That's how I want to play this CD! It's a wonderful line-up of rich, mellow, captivating compositions played with a warmth and vibrancy that is seldom heard. Joshua at his very best. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Non-standard CD format.......2007-04-22

The music on this CD deserves five stars, but the CD itself is a non-standard format that doesn't work on all players. There's a tiny warning on the back of the CD. You won't notice the warning until you discover that the CD doesn't work on your player. My Macintosh computer wouldn't read the non-standard format so there was no way for me to listen in my office or put the music on my iPod.

A friend's PC was able to read the CD and make a copy in standard format that can be read on any player, including my Mac. The story had a happy ending, but I can not comprehend why the publisher chose the oddball CD specification.

The music is excellent and worth the trouble of making a copy, but the publisher really shouldn't make you go to that effort just to listen to a CD that you paid for.

Constantly exhorted to "sing," string players naturally try to emulate that most beautiful musical instrument, the human voice; no wonder they literally want to get their fingers on the treasures of the vocal repertoire. Joshua Bell has appropriated some of its best-loved songs and operatic arias, from Mozart through the romantics to Orff. Slow, sustained, lovely and yes, singing, these beguiling melodies and wide emotional range are eminently well suited to the violin. Credit for most of the arrangements is given to J.A.C. Redford, a well-known film and television composer, and indeed the throbbing strings and jarring modulations typical of sound-tracks invade his orchestrations, in startling contrast to the composers' own. In Debussy's "Beau soir," pianist Frederic Chiu partners Bell so beautifully that one wishes he had supplanted the orchestra in all the songs with piano accompaniment. The violin transcriptions of the vocal line closely follow the originals, except for Redford's compulsive habit of adding octaves in the repeats and jumping from the lowest to the highest register. Of course, Bell is very good at all this, and it's the playing that's really the thing. His tone is ravishingly beautiful, warm on the G-string, radiant up high, and always deeply expressive. His love and innate feeling for the music---its inward simplicity, romantic yearning and passionate ardor---speak straight to the heart. In the only authentic violin part, the obbligato of Richard Strauss' "Morgen!" he is joined by the golden-voiced soprano Anna Netrebko; at first overly intense, she relaxes into a blissful, magical ending. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Serenity in Music.......2007-07-29

This is a beautiful cd. The playing is exquisite, there is a lovely variety of music and it just flows. If you're feeling stressful, this is the music to listen to, if you're feeling thoughtful, this music will make the process even more meaningful. If you need a spirtual tonic, this music can help fill you. It is now one of my favorites and I play it often!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-06-14

I think the reason I love this cd is because the music was not primarily written for the violin. Joshua Bell makes the violin "sing" the pieces. I especially liked Tchaikovsky's "None but the Lonely Heart." I've loved it since we sang it many years ago in our High School chorus and it is not on any of my classical cds.

Good choice.

1 out of 5 stars Voice of the Violin.......2007-06-13

I was disappointed in Bell's popular music style. I love him playing Mozart with his verve and energy - as Mozart would have wanted his music played. This seemed slow and draggy.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-17

I had heard one of the tracks on the radio, so I bought the CD. It was too high-ended, a little screechy.

5 out of 5 stars Voices of the Violin.......2007-05-17

Voices is no only a great listen because of Joshua Bell, but it is relaxing and calming - for me that is a great way to let stress melt away.

Every song is well done. Of course Joshua Bell is a favorite.

As Roger Waters's solo career set into a sunset of suspiciously self-serving Wall revivals and compelling if modest-selling solo efforts, his former band became one of the few outfits in the soft live market of the 1990s to burnish its stadium-filling appeal. But their recorded output wasn't quite so rosy. As all post-Dark Side of the Moon albums must have a Big Important Theme, The Division Bell is vaguely about levels of separation (did you say, duh!?), with more than one not-so-opaque lyrical jab at the estranged Waters. But there's a sense that the band may have put more thought into its trademark audio gimmickry (well represented here by the actual sound of the earth's crust cracking--you don't get that on Rage Against the Machine albums!--and a "spoken" intro by Dr. Stephen Hawking, or rather his voice synthesizer) than it did into its songs this time around. The opening "Cluster One" has a hypnotic minimalist lure that dissolves all too quickly into the bluesy waffle of "What Do You Want From Me," while Floyd Mach III leader Dave Gilmour's usually lyrical guitar work is uninspired throughout, a definite Floydian slip. Still, the band maddeningly manages a few moments of the old grandeur here and there. The Division Bell is not a great Pink Floyd album, but an all-too-fallible simulation. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars March to the beat of a different drum.......2007-08-01

I will admit I only listened to Pink Floyd rather late in life(I saw the lunar lander live on TV)past the heyday of the so called height of the band. I enjoy listening to the album, and with the right headphones on there is so much more to listen to beyond the music itself. A music afficiando? not I, but I know what I like, and this album(CD) rates quite a bit higher than 'Dark Side of the Moon' in my collection. Even though I bought 'The Division Bell' first I was disappointed in my purchase of "Dark Side of the Moon'

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums Ever.............2007-07-28

Enough of these reviews with "Roger Waters" this and "Roger Waters" that. Enough with the, "well it just isn't the same Pink Floyd, it isn't as good as it used to be in the (insert Floyd era here)." Enough of the hate because it's not exactly the same band.

When David Gilmour came to Pink Floyd he added that final element that the band needed to kickstart themselves into super stardom and it shows in The Division Bell. The album starts with two mediocre songs in "Cluster One" and "What Do You Want from Me," with cluster still being a decent song to sit back and relax to. Next comes "Poles Apart" which is the first really good song on the album. It is mellow for the most part but has a nice tune and a good vocal preformance from David. Following this is a 2nd instrumental in "Marooned" which might kind of remind you of the early guitar in "Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-IV." Not as good as Shine but still a good listen. "A Great Day for Freedom" is next which grows on you as does the next song "Wearing the Inside Out" which isn't your normal Floyd but its something different. After these two songs we really get into the heart of the album as the final 5 songs are just amazing. "Take It Back" is a fun upbeat song that really starts to show that the band still has it together and can produce solid songs. After this comes "Coming Back to Life" which is one of the gems of this album. The musical composition is great and the lyrics compliment the song well. Following this is "Keep Talking" which is a really weird song that makes you wonder what Gilmour was on when he wrote it. However, once you get past this you are onto what I believe are two of the best Pink Floyd songs to date. "Lost for Words" is just insane. The music is again amazing with Gilmour's guitar really shining here. And the lyrics. WOW. They are some of my favorite lyrics ever. I consider it to be one of Floyd's best songs. And to think there is still one more song; and quite a song it is. "High Hopes," the final song on the album brings back memories of the old Floyd. A very different yet powerful tune again with some amazing lyrics and music. Another song I'd consider to be one of Floyd's best. It really ends things well.

In all I'd rate this as my 2nd Favorite Pink Floyd album just because of the collection of great songs. If you are truely a fan of Pink Floyd you'd do yourself a favor by getting over your pride for Waters and pick up this album because it holds a lot of good stuff. 5/5

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-06-13

Great companion CD to the Pulse DVD. Must have.

5 out of 5 stars There is nothing wrong with this album. It's all in your mind........2007-04-23

Pink Floyd has always been great "head music". A lot of time had passed by since their high water mark, 1973's Dark Side of the Moon and this album (1994). If it had been released 20 years earlier in 1974, it would have been hailed a masterpiece. I've listened to this album very closely and still found them to be the best purveyors of head music. I can't understand the cynical and disrespectful comments about this album, mostly from folks who weren't even alive when Dark Side came out. Bottom line: If you like Pink Floyd's weird sounds, and surreal soundscapes, you'll love this album. If you're hopping on the latest bandwagon, keep the negativity to yourself and stick to American Idol. Real Pink Floyd fans know "The Division Bell" is really a very good album even without Roger Waters.

3 out of 5 stars A good solo album from David Gilmour.......2007-03-05

I have to agree with many reviewers this time. We are light year away from a true Pink Floyd album, the spirit is not here and the music is quite near to pop sometimes. We have some good tracks hidden in the cd, the best one is "High Hopes", the other interesting cuts are intrumental, "Cluster One" and "Marooned" The other track are just OK but far from memorable composition. "Wearing the inside out" is a real joke.

Drake Bell would like to take some time and tell you what he really wants to say, or at least that's what he sings on "Rusted Silhouette," one of the thoroughly charming pop tunes he glides through on this, his major-label debut. What he put thought into saying on It's Only Time isn't exactly earth-shattering--the teen-targeted, relationship stuff he's spouting has been set forth a million different ways before. But there's something in Bell's punched-up delivery and the sunniness of his Beatles-inspired music that compels the helpless listener--even if she's not 11, even if she's never heard of his Nickelodeon TV show Drake & Josh--to keep humming along. That something is charisma. Not only does Bell have excellent hair, as throngs of swollen-hearted admirers have observed on fan sites, he also has a regular-dude persona he's skilled at channeling with just his voice. He's the guy every guy wants, or wanted, to be in high school: cool, chummy, a babe magnet. Former geeks and goths may take issue, but expect an eventual conversion. It's Only Time, most likely, and Bell knows it. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars New and Refreshing.......2007-07-25

I'm 21 years old, and while I do still watch Disney and Nickelodeon I never really liked Drake and Josh. However, when I heard his track "I know", it was love! The CD is new, and such a different sound then what you normally hear from the people coming from Disney and Nickelodeon- some of the songs are not completely appropriate for his younger viewers, but I definitely suggest it =)

I love this guy named Drake Bell who is a famous singer celebrity person! Ever since I went to one of Drake Bell's concerts at the Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga. I actually got his autograph and even talked to him it was actually like I was in heaven! The main reason why I am telling you about this C.D. is because I am trying encourage you to by this it because of Drake's amazing voice and personality. On this C.D. it includes eleven tracks and they are all the best songs in the whole entire world in my opinion of course. The first track is UP PERISCOPE time 3:15,#2 I KNOW time 3:46, #3 DO WHAT YOU WHAT time 3:26, #4 IT'S ONLY TIME time 4:00 #5 FOUND A WAY (acoustic guitar) time 3:03, #6 MAKES ME HAPPY time 2:08, #7 FOOL THE WORLD time 4:43, #8 FALLEN FOR YOU time 3:17, #9 RUSTED SILHOUETTE time 3:09, BREAK ME DOWN time 2:07, #11 End IT GOOD time 1:46. Plus a bonus DVD of his personal guitar lessons and as well as his own actual life style. Also, on his C.D. is drake bell actually on set filming a music video how cool is that! 4 out of 5 stars Great CD, not for young ears however!.......2007-05-23

I bought this CD for my daughter's (who are 6 and 4) because they really enjoy the Drake & Josh show and hoped they could enjoy Drake's music as well. Heck, I'm 28 and I even watch the show! But, I do have to admit that I was a bit shocked at the sexually charged lyrics of "Up Periscope". I know that Drake is not attached to Josh's hip in the real world even though they are so often packaged as a pair. He's a young man now who is entitled to his private, adult life. He surely doesn't live in the world of Nickelodeon 24-7 and no one should expect him to remain the innocent little boy we knew from the Amanda show. However, Drake DOES have a show on Nickelodeon which draws a huge fan base of young viewers. Singing about ripping off his partners' clothing and having sex multiple times isn't my idea of music suited for small ears. I was so impressed when Josh Peck attributed part of his amazing weight loss to wanting a be a healthy role model for his young fans. I sincerely thought this CD would be cute bubblegum pop that the 14 and under set could enjoy, but I now know that is not so. My kids can listen to "Found A Way" and Mommy can enjoy the other tunes in private :) He is a very talented singer and musician who will hopefully come out with more albums in the future. Just go easy on the naughty lyrics, would ya Drake?? Little kiddos are listening whether you care or not! I guess The Naked Brother's Band is more our speed at the moment.

The screenwriting/directing debut of veteran British stage and screen actor Charles Dance tells of a pair of Cornish spinsters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) who discover a charismatic young Polish violin virtuoso castaway (Daniel Bruhl) on the beach below their home. The tale leads inexorably to tender romantic conflicts and a warm concert house finale. Composer Nigel Hess masterfully utilizes his background as Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company to conjure a score that evokes its quiet, emotional dignity via neo-classical orchestral arrangements that feature real life young virtuoso Joshua Bell on solo violin. Hess' intimate original compositions form a virtually seamless tapestry with the story's requisite classical repertory choices, which range from Massenet and Debussy to Bell's delightful variations on Paganini's "The Carnival of Venice." --Jerry McCulley

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Leave it to composer John Corigliano and violinist Joshua Bell--two of biggest names in classical music--to team up and create one of 1999's best soundtracks. For many, the soundtrack to The Red Violin was just as impressive as the film, a moving blend of gypsy, folk, and classical compositions. --Jason Verlinde

Amazon.com essential recording

Normally we think of a musical instrument as a passive object in the service of a performing artist. But what if that instrument is itself a work of art, containing the secrets of the various owners through whose hands it has passed over the centuries? That's the premise behind this intriguing film by François Girard (director of 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould). It traces the story of a legendary violin (thought to be possessed by an immortal soul) from its birth in 17th-century Italy through Mozart's Vienna, Victorian England, and revolutionary China to its present-day fate on the auction block. The score, in suggesting the violin's unique aura, therefore carries much of the burden of the story, and it brings together some of the most outstanding talents in contemporary classical music. Composer John Corigliano's richly eclectic and poetic score--encompassing classical elegance, gypsy passion, and angst-ridden harmonies--etches vivid portraits of the film's various epochs but also gives an overarching sense of unity to the episodic character of the script. It's essentially a set of remarkably imaginative variations for violin and orchestra on a theme of haunting pathos and is a substantial work of music in its own right. As the soloist, Joshua Bell saturates the eponymous instrument with personality. His combination of virtuoso bravura and soulful phrasing almost seems to lead the violin to the brink of human speech. Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen shapes the exchange between orchestra and violin into tautly dramatic dialogue. The disc also includes a powerful related work on the theme used in the score, the Chaconne for Violin and Orchestra, which confirms Corigliano's status as one of today's leading and most personally communicative American composers. --Thomas May

2 out of 5 stars Music is best along with the movie.......2007-07-31

There are soundtracks that are wonderful to listen to without the movie, such as Ladies in Lavender, and there are soundtracks that go very well while watching the movie. The Red Violin is not as pleasing without the film. With having said that, Joshua Bell does deserve compliments for his excellent skill.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, beautiful, and haunting,.......2007-07-21

There are soundtracks and then there are Soundtracks. There is music, and then there is Music. This cd falls in the latter category, it is a perfect, powerful, haunting, enchanting, beautiful, ethereal, peaceful and yet sometimes frightening, mixture. It evokes so many emotions.

I admit that I have not watched the movie, but I was blown away by the soundtrack. Great, great album. If you love classical/crossover music than this is a must have. I loved it! Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars The Red Violin..........2007-02-03

The DVD is first rate, the Soundtrack defines the movie, leave no doubt, it should make you hunger for more...

5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2007-01-10

I love violin music, and this delivered for me. It is haunting though, in that it feels a little eerie at times and even a little scary ... love it.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music!.......2007-01-05

I loved this film so much I bought the soundtrack. The music is absolutely gorgeous! I especially love the recurring melody and the way it is interpreted differently for every different historical period or part of the world the violin is in throughout the story. I rarely listen to the whole thing at once, however, because (and I have this reaction to all instrumental soundtracks) I find it somewhat redundant after a while, but it's still absolutely wonderful and makes nice background music.

4 out of 5 stars a pleasant surprise.......2007-07-30

I had heard one of Webb's songs when I decided to just go ahead and buy the whole CD -- good decision. Solid from start to finish; great lyrics, excellent musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars New style, same Derek.......2007-07-25

I've always been a big Derek Webb fan, so I suppose I'm a little biased in favor of him (just as a warning). His new CD touches on some shaky topics, as usual, like death, government, politics, and he even includes two songs which he wrote about his wife: one song when he first met her and she had a bf and the other song recently after they've been married for a while.

The album is most appropriately categorized as a rock album, slightly different from any previous album by Webb. The style and theme of the album can be summed up in track 3, entitled "A Love That's Stronger than our Fear." The bridge of that song is, "There is a day that's been inaugurated but has not yet come, and we can proclaim and show them that there's a better way." The songs of the album are shorter than usual, ranging from 2 to 3.5 minutes, but the content is still great.

After my first listen to it (as is typical of Derek Webb), I wasn't incredibly impressed by the album, but the more I listen to it the more I like it, I suppose because I finally realize what he's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Artist.......2007-07-18

Derek's lyrics are suprising and wonderful at the same time. Very thought provoking words mixed with such a laid-back style of music makes him great!

5 out of 5 stars Derek Webb doesn't disappoint.......2007-06-06

Controversial Christian artist Derek Webb has been sparking controversy ever since he began his solo career in 2003. Formerly part of a the pleasantly upbeat folk rock band, Caedmon's Call, Webb's first solo release was blockaded from most religious radio for it's controversial lyrics. Webb made headlines again with his 2005 release "Mockingbird," by criticizing the church's habit of kowtowing to the Republican party. He also gained national attention by making the entire album available for free download - an opportunity that more than 80,000 listeners took advantage.

Now Webb is back with his May 2007 release entitled, "The Ringing Bell." Once again, it's clear that this exceptionally creative artist is still evolving - and this time it's the music that stands out the most. Known mostly for his folk/Americana stylings, Webb is such a popular acoustic performer that he has been known to tour completely by himself. "The Ringing Bell," however, features Webb fully plugged in, with raucous electric guitars, rollicking riffs, and Beatle-esque arrangements. Once again, Webb doesn't shy away from controversial social issues - note in particular the sarcastic "A Savior on Capital Hill." However, the album also includes a roll your windows down-type love song ("I Wanna Marry You All Over Again") and the hope filled acoustic finale, "This Too Shall Be Made Right." While still pointed - particularly for contemporary Christian fare - the lyrics are more subtle than "Mockingbird."

5 out of 5 stars classic derek webb.......2007-05-17

subtle, overt, catchy, kick-in-the-gut. this album unites the clever lyricism of derek's early days with the gutsy soul-searching of his solo career, wrapped up in a beautifully accessible thirty minutes of classic rock. this album pulls no punches but condemns no one. derek webb addresses the application of Christ, not simply the rhetoric of church.

In 1990, it was still fairly novel to mix R&B songcraft with overpowering hip-hop beats, so this spinoff by New Edition members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe seemed innovative and exciting. Sadly it hasn't aged well. None of the three are compelling singers, and they lack the ability to plead for love effectively (anyone can demand love, but a true soulman has to convince a reluctant participant). Nor are they imaginative rappers--neither their words nor their delivery stand out. But this disc came before the likes of Missy Elliott, Puff Daddy, Jermaine Dupri, or Dallas Austin made a big impact on the scene. As such it's a fine document of black teenage lust during the Gulf War months. --Martin Johnson

BBD kicked open the 90's with this timeless banger. No one expected these three of New Edition to be this good and dope. The production from Spiderman & Freeze and PE's Bomb Squad set this joint up for success. Many an act would take peices of their style, such as Jodeci, TLC, SWV and others. The smoothed out mental dress in back in style thanks to Usher, Kanye and just about every R & B artist today.

It was in the MTV era( when they actually played music )when i heard a beat that made me stop...it was Poison by BBD. That was just the begining for me and this album. i was just starting to DJ back then and i was always looking for the next heater for the dance floor. BBD gave me more than one, in fact they gave us all music that to this day is still being requested and played well after 12:00AM...their songs are still heaters!!!"I thought it was me" and " Do me" never got old on the dancefloor. I never played a party without all of the above being requested by everyone back home in Santa Paula,Ca. For anyone who had a taste for the 80's dance music ...this is a mixture of R& b, New Jack, Soul-(When will I see You Smile Agian?) that you need in your collection. It's 2007 and i'm still DJing and i'm still playing these same BBD cuts on the dancefloor on the regular! This album is a prime example of how good the music was back in the 80's...want proof...i'm still playing BBD almost 20 years later and getting the same reaction from the dancefloor...! JC Cota[...]

5 out of 5 stars Ivy League.......2006-07-11

The spin-off trio from New Edition formed by Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe to form Bell Biv DeVoe. Their debut album and lead single Poison combined R&B, dance and hip-hop with timeless quotable "...never trust a big butt and a smile..." to bring back memories of that day in time. The ten song album starts off with "Dope!". This song definitely sets the tone for the LP and builds expectation that hasn't been left out with again memorable lyrics "...come here girl I wanna knock your boots..." that was also produced by Dr. Freeze. "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)?" continued on exposing the multi-talented group and their style. As a majority of this LP "Let Me Know Something?!" continues with fast pace dance tunes smoothed by Bell's vocals. "...take a look at me / tell me do you like what you see..." bluntly stated on "Do Me!" as they slow the tempo down a few degrees for a hot sexual encounter. Referencing the life of New Edition and the transition, "Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph And Johnny (Word To The Mutha)!" connects to the members and the fan which was produced themselves with the help of Peace Production. "Ain't Nut'in' Changed!" is all hip-hop down to the production from Hank Shocklee, Eric Sadler and Keith Shocklee (also Public Enemy) as one of the three songs produced by the team. Tracks nine and ten contains the only ballads found on this album produced by Timmy Gatling and Alton Stewart with "When Will I See You Smile Again?" and "I Do Need You". The ballads show more mature sound (N.E. with Johnny Gill) harmonies that made them popular for that time. As New Edition or B.B.D they still know how to entertain with great classic songs.

3 out of 5 stars HIP! FUNKY! FRESH!.......2006-06-20

I got my hands on "Poison" 8 years ago when I bought it for cheap at a used CD shop. This album has its moments with the strongest tracks being the ones that were played on the radio: BBD (I Thought It Was Me), Do Me!, Poison, When Will I See You Smile Again?, and I Do Need You. The other songs I didn't care too much for. Thank goodness they didn't have more than 11 songs! Even though these guys had no real rap skills, they still delivered the goods. They had a style, they were hip, and had a few good singles under their belts.

5 out of 5 stars Carnival of the Animals.......2007-01-10

The music is beautiful. I used it for a music lesson for Kindergarten on how to interpret animals using music. It is also very soothing in the background for working.

3 out of 5 stars Carnival..........2005-07-26

I found this disk to be "adequate." Other than The Swan, nothing really moved me. The swan rates five stars, the rest, four! You might like it more than I did...

I had been a fan of this recording when it was first released. While looking for the recording for my daughter, I fell upon this release.
Sensational! Who can't love the Romantics?

5 out of 5 stars Musical Playfulness at it's finest.......2005-02-20

This CD is absolutely charming. The Carnival of the Animals is so full of different expressions- the majestic lion, the agonizingly slow tortoise, the free-flying birds, the dancing fossils, and the regal swan. Phaeton is amazing, as is le Rouet d'Omphale and the Danse Macabre. I wasn't into Saint-Saens before this CD, but now I'm hooked. For model romantic era music, buy this CD without delay :)

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2002-01-31

It's humourous, it's simple, it's great. Those three words best describe Carnvial of Animals. From the lovely and beautiful Aquarium and Aviary to the more serious, respectable March of the Royal Lion, this musical composistion goes everywhere and does everything in great strides. A must-have for any classical music fan
