About the Artist
Terami Hirsch began her musical journey while still in diapers as she explored the world of classical piano. On the other hand, Kevin Benson rebelled against any training by claiming his best instrument was the cowbell.

Flash forward twenty-some years and Terami had one self-produced album under her belt (All Girl Band). During this time, Kevin experimented with different drum machines and gadgets and recorded a techno album of his own (Eclectric Shock Syndrome, under the moniker "LukeWarm").

Finally, in 2000, they began their intense collaboration. Since then, they have released two more albums (Stickfigures and To the Bone) and are working on an upcoming release for 2003.

3 out of 5 stars Only 1 or 2 good tunes.......2007-07-26

I own all of Down to the Bone albums and this one is my least favorite.

4 out of 5 stars with more edge and a lot of soul and funk.......2007-07-22

I have all of the cd's, and all my friends are big fans now also, this is
good with a lot of soul and lots of horns, which is good and a little
away from some of the others, but with that hard and fast beat that just keeps you taping your feet and moving around in your seat.Im glad there are more vocals on this one, I guess they took my advice from last time,?
if your looking for some feel good music that will keep a party moving and everyone dancing than this is the one just like all the rest of them.
its like I say' Down to the Bone is where the groves are to be found.

5 out of 5 stars DOWN TO THE BONE SUPERCHARGED.......2007-07-03

I WAS WONDERING IF THIS CD WAS GOING TO BE AS GOOD AS ALL OF DTTB'S OTHERS.IT IS GREAT!! I LOVE IT !! IF YOU LIKE JAMES BROWN & ROY AYERS, YOU GET AN EXTRA TREAT!!THE CD IS WONDERFUL!! THE MORE I PLAY IT, THE MORE I LIKE IT!! I HAVE SEEN THEM IN PERSON TWICE & KEEP WANTING TO GO BACK!! THEY DON'T BEGIN TO GET THE RECOGNITION THAT THEY DESERVE!!I LOVE THEIR MUSIC!!!DTTB is great in person!! I saw & heard them w/ a full band & they kept you rockin!! If you have a chance to see them live & don't, you are really missing the best!! Corrina Grayson is Great on Supercharged!!

4 out of 5 stars A truly great fusion of Jazz and Funk........2007-07-01

This is the new fantastic, great new album from the British contemporary Jazz Funk outfit.
"Supercharged" is the funkiest set to date.
Every track is a winner.
The title song is a full on Funk instrumental on which the horn section excel, as is the slower "Funkin' Around".
"Parkside Shuffle" is a mellower summer like groover (hints of Ramsey Lewis).
Hil St Soul adds her soulful voice to the Incognito like "Smile To Shine" wicked b-line!
Roy Ayers adds scat and vibes to the Jazz Funk stunner "Electric Vibes".
"Space Dust", "Make It Funky" and "Hip City" are fine instrumentals that fuse Jazz and Funk.
The horn and rhythm sections are cooking. Essential.
Prepare to have a great time !!!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is much better than their Live performances.......2007-06-27

Down to the Bone puts out EXCEPTIONAL CD's. This one is no different. The song "Supercharged" has got some nice high energy output. The cool sounding "Smile to Shine" with sharp vocals from Hil St Soul is very infectious! "FUNKIN' Around" (Bolded to avoid a mis-reading mistake) has got some stong horn melody and definitely a "toe tapper". "Shake it Up" featuring Corrina Greyson is somewhat of a dissapointment however. It sounded like more of a Pop song to me. The subdued "Hip City" climaxes to a stong guitar crescendo and finishes off very cleanly. "Space Dust" is typical funky Down to the Bone, and is reminiscent of many of their famous cuts. "Make it Funky" has an element of hip-hop, and is a refreshing change of pace from some of the other songs on the CD. If you like Down to the Bone, you will like the other tunes, but my fingers are getting tired from typing! I higly recommend the entire album! (OK - just this last note: You GOTTA listen to Cosmic Fuzz! It's is so cool, it's COLD!) (Oh yeah, one last comment: I own all the other DTTB CD's, and saw them live 3 times. If you like their CD's, don't disappoint yourselves. Keep the dream, and DON'T see them live. They're not as clean and sharp when they're on tour. They don't travel with a full band compliment, and the lead sax guy, "Shilts", likes to be "buzzed" and drink beer as he plays, I saw him have at least 4 Corona Extras.) :-(

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars BSG.......2007-04-10

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

5 out of 5 stars Agree with everyone else.......2007-03-28

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

Californian Etta James decided against accepting filmmaker Martin Scorcese's personal invitation to sing at The Blues gala in New York in early 2003. The well-celebrated soul and blues queen makes amends here with what is one of the most blues-centered recordings in her expansive discography, bringing her big, no-nonsense voice and her feisty, proud woman's point of view to bear on classics, many identified with Chicago. The likes of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'," Jimmy Reed's "Hush Hush," and Muddy Waters's "Got My Mojo Working" may be hackneyed choices, but she seizes each of a dozen as her own, and clearly, as she says herself, these are the blues songs that touch her the deepest. No argument here. --Frank-John Hadley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Etta is the Queen of the Blues.......2007-07-16

This is a spectacular effort from one of the true legends of the blues. EVERY cut is a killer track, the selection is incredible. Just buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Etta at Her Best.......2007-07-07

With the renewed interest in blues by a new generation, Etta James in recent years has published many of the old favorites on fresh CDs. This recording is an excellent example of the old-time blues that should please all fans, young and old. I am a blues fan and an Etta James junkie. I have always claimed that she is the best that ever was. Since I bagan going blind, my appreciation of her magnificent voice is only heightened. Any of her recordings--old or new, studio or live performances, are essential for a true appreciation of the genre. However, this CD, in addition to being educational, great example of the genre, funky song choicees and of excellent quality, is simply fun.

2 out of 5 stars So Sad.......2007-06-25

I can't even believe that this was actually Etta James. She must have been having a very bad day when she cut this one. Her voice is empty, weak, emotionless and she sounds exactly the same in every single track. The best part of it are her sons who play back-up. I know what she is capable of so I am just chalking it up to illness or something. I don't even want to listen to it again.

5 out of 5 stars ETTA IS OUT DOING THE BEST BLUES CLASSICS.......2007-02-28

YOU HAVE HEARD ALL THESE SONG'S BEFORE BUT NOT LIKE MISS ETTA JAMES CAN DO THEM. I LOVE ALL THE 50'S AND 60'S ETTA LOVE CLASSICS BUT THE BLUES IS HER CALLING. SHE IS THE BEST LIVE PERFORMER I KNOW, HER LEGS MAY BE A LITTLE SHAKEY BUT YOU WILL NEVER HEAR HER SING ANY SONG THE SAME WAY TWICE SOMETIMES SHE'LL SLOW SONG DOWN AND MAKE YOU CRY. AND SOMETIMES SHE WILL GET FUNKY ON A LOVE SONG AND MAKE IT RAUNCHY SO THAT YOU ARE LAUGHING AND SMILING INSTEAD OF CRYING. I SWEAR SHE CAN READ THE CROWD SO WELL SHE KNOWS WHAT THE AUDIENCE HAS IN THERE HEART'S AND SHE WILL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU NEED. IT'S A PRIVATE SHOW FOR EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN THE ROOM. BUY THIS ALBUM AND PLAY IT WHEN YOU ARE IN ANY KIND OF MOOD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

5 out of 5 stars Darvin Deva Queen.......2007-02-07

It is only a few artists that can evolve from one genre to another and capture and create in each one. This album proves that with time Etta ages like fine wine. She is light and sassy in the beginning but smooth and brilliant as time goes by.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Of Down To The Bone.......2007-07-11

I Am Not A Overly Big Fan Of This Group, So Buying Their CD's Was Not Really On My Must Buy List! However, Some Of Their Music Is Very Good And Enjoyable To Listen To. The Release Of Their Best Of CD, Was A Timely Thing For Me And Just The Right Amount Of Down To The Bone For My Tastes. A Very Enjoyable CD!

5 out of 5 stars Cruisin music at it's finest.......2007-05-19

I immediately ordered this CD for my brother as a Father's Day gift. I didn't expect anything less from this group...they are true artist at their craft.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Down to the Bone.......2007-04-10

While on vacation I stumbled across a concert given by Down to the Bone at Lake Tahoe. Absolutely awesome performance and this CD has captured the best of it and their other CD's as well.

2 out of 5 stars original down to the bone group.......2007-04-01

Without any prejudice whatsoever, the original group who made the CD "From Manhattan to Staten" was a far better group in terms of a better rendition, because they were more natural with the African illulations and the drum beats along with organs, trumpets, saxaphones, tom tom, vocals, etc. My humble suggestion is that the original group should be regrouped taking a lead from the the first three(3) CD'S which were made, including "FROM MANHATTAN TO STATEN".If this is done I can assure you by GOD'S will that the CD'S will be a sellout.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for jazz lovers........2007-03-14

I have been following the group for some time and when I found this compilation immediately went to buy it. All the great piesces are there (for a 1 CD compilation that is) and the icing on the cake is the last track , ¨Long way from Brooklin¨. I hope that you will ejoy it as I do every time I listen to it.

The Destroyers have been called a glorified bar band, yet they deserve credit for introducing '80s mainstreamers to early rockers such as Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. They also reintroduced classic blues forms to rock radio, only in a little more electrified form. Hell, they even electrified Hank Williams's "Move It On Over." The aforementioned artists are all represented on this compilation, which in many ways also displays how much Thorogood's songs owe to the originals. The Thorogood-penned title cut, for instance, owes an unmistakable debt to Bo Diddley (who appeared in the video). And when Thorogood sandwiches John Lee Hooker's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" between his own "I Drink Alone" and "If You Don't Stop Drinkin'," it tough to miss the connection. If you buy only one Thorogood album, this should be it. --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Blues.......2006-06-24

There are few that can out rock this album. It is basic and pure the way the rockin' blues was meant to be. This is music that speaks to a soul that is crying out for tenderness while standing steadfast and defiant. George reaches back some 30 years to bring rocks beginnings to modern day style. It is still bad to the bone.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Thorogood.......2003-06-01

Bad to the Bone put George on the map of songwriters and will probably be his signature song!

This is a showcase release that is a change of pace and an enjoyable listen!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Thorogood.......2002-03-11

BAD TO THE BONE is classic George Thorogood and his band the Destroyers. On this album we have 10 slabs of great blues-rock music that all music fans will enjoy. George helped to bring alot of the classic blues masters into the mainstream back in the 80's and early 90's when he was in his prime. On this album we have his classic title track that is enough of a reason to buy this album, but I think that the other songs are great also. BACK TO WENTZVILLE, NOBODY BUT ME, MISS LUANN, NO PARTICULAR PLACE TO GO are just furious rockin tunes that will get you moveing in no time. BLUE HIGHWAY, IT'S A SIN, AS THE YEARS GO PASSING BY are slower blues tempo songs that are pulled off very well here. George is still rockin 20 years after this release and hopefully we will still be getting some great music from him in the years to come

4 out of 5 stars Classic George, as always........1998-09-13

This album features George's "big hit," Bad to the Bone, reason alone for getting it. Compared to his other albums, this has more slow numbers than usual. But songs like the opening track, Back To Wentzville, are so rockin' that they may inspire you to play the guitar, like it did for me. This really shows how George can pick up the pace or slow it down smoothly, like few can.

Product Description

The follow-up to Black Labs critically acclaimed Geffen debut Your Body Above Me (feat. "Wash it Away," Time Ago), See the Sun is a lush, epic union of heartbreak and rock & roll, diamond-cut lyrics set to hard candy melodies, raging guitars and gin-soaked stories of love, loss and redemption. Like U2 and Live and the Goo's getting drunk together. Like a five star hotel, you check in and youre sorry to check out. Their new album has a depth and emotional range that broadens with each listen. Grammy award-winning engineer Tom Lord-Alge (Live, Blink 182) mixed most of the album. What shines brightest is the band's pop sensibility the liquid swirl of "Remember," the epic sweep of "See the Sun," the raging loss of "Without You," and the open-armed surrender of "Lonely Boy." Black Lab has contributed to the soundtracks of Spider Man, Can't Hardly Wait, Varsity Blues, Permanent Midnight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Party of Five, What I Like About You, MTV's The Real World, and most recently, Blade: Trinity.

5 out of 5 stars Another good addition to collection.......2007-02-11

If you like black lab then what can I say you'll enjoy it. I'm not one to analyze every aspect. If it makes feel like moving then that is all I care. I think I almost like it better than their first. You won't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2007-01-05

I've had this cd for over 2 months now and I can't stop listening to it. If you loved Black Lab back in the 90s, you will love them even more. Songs like Lonely Boy and Remember will stay in your mind for days. This is a must buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2006-12-26

Ever since I heard 'Learn To Crawl' on the Spider-Man Motion Picture Soundtrack I had a thirst to hear more of Black Lab's music. I bought this CD, praying I would not be let down. I wasn't one tiny bit. I LOVE this CD! I wasn't too pleased with Your Body Above Me, which I found moderately okay. I found this much superior. The only song I didn't like was Ecstasy, it just didn't have a catchy beat or lyrics and wasn't very memorable. With awsome songs like 'Lifelike' 'Wide Open' 'Without You' and 'Tell Me Why,' this CD will keep you entertained for hours while you hum along to your favourite songs. The lyrics were insightful and catchy. The music fitted perfectly to each and every song, each song being unique in it's own special way. Buy this CD, it's not a waste of money. Black Lab is an awsome bands which deserves more recognition. After listening for this, I have a thirst for a new album by Black Lab!

4 out of 5 stars great from start to finish.......2006-10-30

This is a great, great CD. It is not as impressive as 'Your Body Above Me', which is truly a masterpeice, but this is a great CD. Fantastic vocals and melodies, unforgettable. A great CD from a truly incredible band. Glad to see they are still around and putting out great music, anxious to hear their next effort.

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy this here.......2006-03-13

This is a very good album by a very underrated post-grunge band. This album is very different from "Your Body Above Me", but it's still a very solid, well-crafted effort. One gripe about it iss how rare it is,m though. It took me forever to find it, and I didn't want to pay $20 for it here, so I searched the internet. There is a webiste called Alternativeaddiction.com (google it). They loved this album, and they sell it for a mere $8 for download. And you pay through PayPal, so its a safe, fast transaction. So do yourself a fovor: but his great album and, if you haven't already, get "Your Body Above Me" (it's better). And buy "See the Sun" on Alternative Addiction's website.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Bone Days CD John Trudell.......2007-02-22

This CD speaks to the heart. Fantastic, such talent. John Trudell is a true word weaver.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual food for mind , heart and soul.......2004-04-02

I discovered John Trudell with this album and I deeply fell in love with this man. When I heard these album's songs for the first time, I was definitely hooked and deeply moved. I can't help listening to this cd again and again...The music, beautiful blues, mixed with traditional Native American voice and music, and THIS VOICE, John Trudell's voice - deep, beautiful voice which send vibrations and thrills through all my being. Everyone who hear such a voice can't help being under a spell.
And then THE WORDS, such words as "My heart doesn't hurt anymore, but my soul does. Maybe that's what soules are for, to take the hurt the heart can't take." And then THE MAN behind this voice and behind these words...

I wanted to know more about this artist, and then I went back through his discography and discovered more about the man too. John Trudell speack about things which can't leave people cold.

As a woman, a mother and an human being this man touched me,deeply...mind, heart and soul. Please, listen to his voice, please listen to his "spoken words", his music. John Trudell is such an artist, such a man, such a treasure for the humanity. I wish everybody in the world could open his mind and his heart to this man's words.

PS: It's the same review bellow, but I re-wrote it because a lot of grammatical mistakes!! I am afraid everyone has noticed that English isn't my native language. But I was so eager to share my feelings about this album that I haven't noticed the wrong words I used and the mistakes I wrote. But I wasn't wrong about my feelings, and the "power"of John Trudell's voice and songs.

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of Sanity in an Insane World.......2002-08-15

I recently purchased this CD 'Bone Days' and what can I say? A superlative compilation of music, lyrics, spoken words and song. Highly intelligent and deeply, deeply profound. A delight to the senses. An emotional rollercoaster. Happiness, inspiration, sadness, anger, despair. As I write this review I am actually listening to this very CD!

I would like to conclude this review by expressing my gratitude and appreciation to John T, Angelina Jolie and the complete 'cast and crew' who wrote, compiled and produced this exceptionally fine and highly enjoyable album. Five hundred years plus and society, 'at large' seemingly and tragically remains very blind and extremely deaf to the Wisdom and Knowledge being shared so generously, with us, by Native individuals such as John Trudell. Yes, indeed, John "live and learn are the Seasons...."

5 out of 5 stars To the Bone.......2002-04-06

Again John Trudell cuts to the bone with this new album. He has been my hero for decades and each time I hear his words they still have power to move me. I cry, I get angry and I am deeply moved by this man who has touched the gods and come back with a message for us. I think anyone can relate to the expressions he shares with us. Love, happiness, blues, anger and fleeting joy. As in the title track of Bone Days " The great search for truth, every meaning has a meaning, Dark and light have their reason, Live and learn are the seasons."
His songs of love are exquisite. Like "Takes my breath" leave me feeling. . .

Bridging the channel between smooth jazz and hip-bop/acid jazz are Down to the Bone, a band that mixes live horns with grooves and beats and comes up with something classy smooth. Down to the Bone are more about the dance floor than the listening room, but they do spice the mix with some up-front horn charts and often use interesting instrumentation (is that an oboe?) to keep things moving. --S. 5 out of 5 stars One of the best listening experiences ever.......2007-04-12

Rarely do I listen to an album that I love beginning to end, but this one succeeds easily. I never get tired of hearing it, and like another reviewer commented, it just makes me happy all the way through -- it's a great pick-me-up after a long, hard day. I can't help but MOVE to the complex layers of rhythm and music, all interwoven with amazing balance, and even though I've listened countless times now, it seems I'm always picking up some new element in the sound. Some groups play music, others MAKE music. DTTB is definitely in that latter category.

1 out of 5 stars Can someone explain.......2005-10-25

why this album cost nearly $60? I was looking to buy it, but not for that kinda price. My "lone star" rating does not reflect my review but it's cost.

2 out of 5 stars NOT THAT INSPIRED.......2004-08-31

When I heard "brooklyn heights" I hoped that this band had other songs in the same vein, but they do not.
The rest of the cd sounds like uninspired acid-jazz, with not enough musical chances taken.

"Brooklyn Heights" is such a great track, that it makes the rest of the cd seem inferior!

It seems like these dudes have the right idea of musicality, but they don't seem to take it as far as they should.
It sounds like they don't want to scare off their "smooth jazz" audience, so they keep the songs flat, and boring.

Had potential, but falls flat.

3 out of 5 stars Not Funky Enough.......2005-10-03

I found that this CD did not live up to its title. DTTB's later CD, Spread Love Like Wildfire, is much funkier (despite its title, which would lead you to believe that its tracks are all love songs). The tracks on Not Funky Enough all seem to have the same disco beat and the horn lines are very repetitive. In short, I found this CD to be on the boring side.

1 out of 5 stars Computerized Techno-Jazz!.......2004-07-28

"Cellar Funk", by Down To The Bone, is an awful exercise in bland computerized pre- programmed robot music. If you want real jazz/rock fusion, you are better off listening to the Crusaders, Stuff, Weather Report, or the master Miles Davis. There are no educated musical riffs, or even a hint of great musicianship here. This isn't real jazz, but it could find a place as telephone hold music! Avoid this release like the plague.

4 out of 5 stars Good Down to the Bone but NOT Acid Jazz.......2004-07-19

I've been hearing Down to the Bone for years now and have all their albums. I've enjoyed them as I have rarely enjoyed music, they simply make my day.

Sadly this album is not what I've been hearing in their past albums...they have turned from Acid Jazz (a mix of Funk, Jazz and Soul) to FUSION jazz (a mix of Jazz, Samba, Bossa Nova, you name it!).

I gave this disc 4 stars because it does not generate the feelings the other four albums do, but it is still a very good album (I can hear the piece "Dancing to a Samba" a THOUSAND times and still want to hear it one more time).

One thing to keep in mind is that we usually complain that artists start composing in a certain way and continue releasing albums that sound exactly the same. Maybe this change in Down to the Bone is for the future best.

1 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?.......2004-05-25

First of all, I have been a HUGE Down to the Bone fan ever since I first heard a track of theirs a few years ago. Seeing them live at the Old Pasadena Jazz Fest was one of the highlights of the summer of '03. With that, I have to say -- what were they thinking? This CD sounds like they got tired of the whole thing, turned on the synthesizers and left the room, no, the building. Monotonous. Stale. Wow. Why? Any of their other CDs blows this one out of the water. Try "Manhattan to Staten" and "Crazy Vibes & Things."

5 out of 5 stars Down To The Bone- Cellar Funk.......2004-05-04

I am a huge fan of DTTB and their music. I've listened to, bought, and loved their music since their first US release in 1999, "From Manhattan to Staten Island". They are a huge break from the mainstream contemporary jazz music that I personally think sometimes puts you to sleep. From teh begining they've always had outrageously funky tunes that had tremendous solos in every song. The songs have jazz roots and take those roots and expand them past the mainstream jazz music. They add a little spice to it with straight up funk, disco, dance and powerfully driven urban beats. Cellar Funk did not disappoint. It might be their best release since "Urban Grooves".It's much more urban than a few of their previous releases with stronger bass and drum backbeats. They added some very nice R&B touches to their album noticably on tracks like "Little Smile", and "Your The Only Reason" that make these songs a little slower paced than some of the others but gives it a warm confortable feeling. They are truly smooth groove gems that still keep you tapping your feet. They also incorporated some dance touches that make up songs like "The Flow" and "Crossing Boundaries". That gives these songs the extra boost to really make them shine. "Back In Business" and "Cellar Funk" are good songs that are shout outs to the original DTTB tracks but have an extra funkiness and edge to them which you can thank to stronger bass lines and short noted keyboard harmonies. The bonus track "Back In Business, (the business mix)" are great feel good DTTB jives. "Dancing to a Samba" is a great hybrid of dance, salsa, samba, jazz, and urban music. It sounds great and I hope more are to come. They gave the keyboards more time in the spot light throughout the album with frequent drawn out solos. The horns in general took a backseat in this album which isn't such a bad thing because it gave the harmony more life. This is a great funky album that you listen to on the highway, in your room, on a walk man, during parties, and just about anywhere. I strongy recommend this album. I'm sorry for any typos and/or misspellings.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06

Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.

5 out of 5 stars The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23

Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.

--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.

On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.

The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

5 out of 5 stars music of great beauty.......2005-04-24

Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28

This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.

5 out of 5 stars Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20

This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.
