Gone Floppo.......2006-10-12
When 'Troppo' came out in 1982, and dare I say, I was there, it crashed and burned for good reason. The lead-off single, "Wake Up My Love", sparred directly against Laura Brannigan's "Gloria", which had the same riff and most of the same melody. Brannigan won - and for good reason. "Wake Up My Love" is horrid. I thought it then and I think it now.
Harrison understandably felt disappointment with the album's reception, but subsequently admitted he was pretty high a lot of the time, leading to long, meandering, synthetic passages (the arc of "Unknown Delight", "Baby Don't Run Away" and the milquetoast "Dream Away" is lifeless dreck, and makes "Extra Texture" seem like "Abbey Road"), which are damaged further from clumsy mixing. The new CD has added some Sir Frankie Crispness back into the sound, but it's still on the muddy side.
The charm of 1979's "George Harrison", strained for in "Somewhere in England", is almost completely gone here. The stories are almost told on the album covers themselves, with the 1979 release bathed in cool earth tones and 1982 album graffitied with bizarre conflicting doodles and colors. Only "That's the Way It Goes", "Mystical One" and the title track are solidly original and enjoyable tracks - not counting the almost obligatory Beatles' reject, "Circles", which could have been brilliant, but as is, sounds just slightly better than the 1968 demo.
Simply put, it was time for George to take some time off. And I am glad he did.
A Sunny Day.......2006-06-26
No, it is not all steel drums and island rhythms, although there is some of that, especially on the title track. But mostly, this is just George Harrison relaxing with his friends and having a good time making beautiful music. The vibe is downright tropical. The overall production of the album is crisp and refreshing. The cover art is quirky and fun.
Highlights are many and include the doo-wop "I Really Love You" and a swaying instrumental called "Greece". "Wake Up My Love" opens the album with a bouncing beat, sound effects, synthesizers, and excellent slide guitar work. The harmonics banish negative feelings at the speed of light. "That's The Way it Goes" takes things down a notch, with a methodical rejection of the obsessive materialism of western culture that drags us down like a ball and chain.
What? You mean money and success are not important? Well, for the man who wrote "Something" and spent "all those years" as a Beatle, success and money are a given, at least so far as I can see. Yet it is impossible to comment on this album without replying to the trashing it took by the critics. It was widely reported that George Harrison was a "has been" and that this album was awful. To them, let me answer with George's own words, undoubtedly "borrowed" from his eastern teachings; "he who knows does not speak, he who speaks does not know" ~ or with my own more confrontational style; your fake tan is fading and your shoes are too tight.
Closing Song from "Time Bandits " the movie........2006-06-22
Could have been a classic........2006-05-05
You need to listen with an open mind to hear this in "Gone Troppo." None of the tracks is weak if you approach it fairly. "I Really Love You" was much criticized by other reviewers, but it reminds me of what the Beatles did on the White Album, where we all agree they're fun. The best track is, in my view, "Unknown Delight," a very special composition. I simply recommend that, if you buy the album, don't assume beforehand that George didn't make an effort here. (It's easy to see it as disconnected and mediocre if you expect it to be that.) Listen to it as if George was around and "Gone Troppo" just came out. You might agree with me that he put a lot into this record and probably thought it would do well.
Four stars because, well, it may not be for everyone. If you don't like 80's style pop arrangements, that'll take away from the enjoyment of "Wake Up My Love." The sequencing of the songs may not be ideal, and the title song is just a trifle light.
GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN.......2005-12-23
This is an album of interest only to those who care about Harrison's music. It was made really for fans and not critics.
Interesting to note George reviving what were really 1962 little known American songs,in this case the Stereo's I really love you,not exactly one of the year's classics but nice to hear another version.
He would do it again for James Ray's Got my mind set on you-this shows real ingenuity.
And for the first time we get the aborted Beatles era song Circles.

Not his best work, but solid nonetheless.......2004-06-03
George Harrison's seventies recording career ended on a positive note with the release of his excellent, 1979 self-titled solo album, but the eighties started off rough for him. His first album of the new decade, 1981's Somewhere In England, had to be drastically altered against Harrison's will before it was released. That travesty aside, Harrison would record again. The following year, Gone Troppo, one of Harrison's most underrated recordings, was released. How does this album measure up? Read on for my review.
Of all of George Harrison's solo albums, this is probably the most "pop-sounding" one of all. And accordingly, it isn't one of his best albums. I'm NOT saying it's a bad album though; it's actually quite good. As the title may have implied, many of the songs featured here take on somewhat of a "tropical" sound. And, two fairly big hits emerged from this album - the title track, which is an extremely catchy little pop number, as well as That's The Way It Goes, which is the best song featured on this entire album (in my opinion anyway.) And, like with any Harrison album, the non-hits are also excellent. For instance, Wake Up My Love is the song that truly signifies Harrison's entry into the eighties. It's highly underrated! And then, of course, we have Harrison looking back into the past with the fifties, doo-wop styled I Really Love You. George even serves up an instrumental track entitled Greece. Another track worth mentioning is Dream Away, a track from Time Bandits. Although several songs on this recording fall below the high standard that some fans hold for Harrison, there isn't a single "weak" track featured here. In the end you are left with a good album that is severely underrated - enough said.
The "Dark Horse Years" albums released by George Harrison (those studio/live albums released from 1976-1992) have been rereleased, remastered, and in some cases, given bonus tracks. However, I feel that the choices of bonus tracks was very poor in some cases. For example, the bonus track featured on this album is a demo version of Mystical One. Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent demo, but there is a HUGE omission - I Don't Want To Do It, which Harrison recorded for the Porky's Revenge soundtrack. This was one of his finest solo recordings, and the company blew the opportunity to finally put it on a George Harrison album! This means that if fans want that song, they now only have two options - to hunt down that out of print soundtrack for a sake on a single song, or to get it via illegal means (downloading, on a bootleg, etc.) That bites.
What more can I say. Gone Troppo is more of the underrated pop genius that only an early eighties incarnation of George Harrison could shell out. It's not one his strongest works, and not recommended for Harrison newbies, but if you're a fan, don't hesitate to add this one to your collection.
