4 out of 5 stars A silver classic!.......2007-04-05

This silver classic, released around fall 1981,features two Top 20 hits, the title track and CENTERFOLD. I first heard this album around then on my cousin's phonograph(he had an LP copy). The videos for the two aforementioned tracks frequently aired during MTV's(Music Television) first year on the air. The title track has such powerful, angry beats that I'd like to put on a pair of boxing gloves and hit a canvas bag with them! I have to admit that it would help boxing trainees. According to Norm N. Nite's Rock On Almanac, this album was one of 1982's top albums.

4 out of 5 stars A classic '80s rock album.......2006-06-13

Anybody who watched MTV back when they actually played videos will remember the video for Centerfold and probably for Freeze Frame as well. These songs saw a lot of play when they came out. I didn't know anything about J. Geils Band at the time. I certainly had no idea they'd already had a string of records over the past decade. All I knew is that the few songs I'd heard were great.

Since then, I've picked up their first album. There is an amazing difference, but at the same time, it was clear for the first time how they arrived at the sound they made themselves famous with in Freeze Frame.

Most of the deep bluesy sound they had way back when are gone here, but there is enough left to give this album a sound of its own. Other great tracks here include "Rage In The Cage", "Insane, Insane Again", and "Flamethrower".

If you liked Centerfold or Freeze Frame, it's safe to say you will probably like the rest of the album. If you're a blues/rock fan, you'd probably like it as well as liking their earlier stuff. As far as '80s rock goes in general, this is a great one to add to your collection. I'm glad I finally did.

5 out of 5 stars J. Geils Abandoned Their Roots For Pop? Then Some Of The Quirkiest, Most Inventive Pop Of Its Time!.......2006-05-08

With FREEZE FRAME, the ultimate party/bar band made a record far removed from the more purist blues moves of their earliest days. This is basically some good, very tuneful rock 'n roll. Nearly all of these cuts are really catchy. Many have a distinct 50's feel while others veer a little more towards experimental/avant-garde territory. The production is slick and solid - sometimes it's even pretty trippy. I was pretty darn young when this came out (middle school age), and of course I loved the big hits - "Centerfold," "Rage In The Cage," "Freeze Frame" and, of course, "Flamethrower" with images of the cheerleaders at school getting down 'n dirty to its downbeat seared permanently on my little brain.

Listening to this album today, I'd say it's unique enough to still sound great to the average listener, even though some might say it does sound kinda dated (as someone who's never been particularly concerned about what's current or fashionable, this isn't really a problem for me).

My impressions:

"Freeze Frame" - an instantly recognizable series of camera clicks sets this addictive tune in motion. Great keys, horns, and that swaggering doo-wop dip is so infectious. Still way cool in my book. *****

"Rage In The Cage" - this one cranks up the intensity level and it still gets my blood flowing. *****

"Centerfold" - ah, the biggest hit and a classic expression of male sexual fantasy life. This one's still a riot. I remember some tight-wads at the time thought that it was too dirty for radio, but they played the hell out of it anyway because it's actually pretty innocent (and of course it's a great song). *****

"Do You Remember When" - has this wistful, romantic quality that (some) chicks will dig. ****

"Insane, Insane Again" - this one's a trip, a hyper kinetic romp with vocalist Peter Wolf sounding like a real maniac. The band's excellent pop musicianship is in full effect as the song morphs into bizarre Walt Disney moves and a raging piano solo. *****

"Flamethrower" - maybe I'm biased, but I think this one still sounds sexy. It may be the best on the album. *****

"River Blindness" - strangely enough, this is my absolute favorite track on FREEZE FRAME, and I tend to listen to it much more than the others these days. This one ventures quite a bit further into left field than any of the other tracks do. There's something so evocative about this song - my brain has created an entire visual scenario to accompany it which I can totally get lost in when I'm lying in the dark, completely tripping out on it (the scenario is based on "Dungeons & Dragons" - another relic of my past I wouldn't mind revisiting). A trippy, intense, unusual track. Reaches a great climax. *****+

"Angel In Blue" - this one's got a great melody and it does rock although it's much slower and sadder than the other songs. It isn't really my cup of tea, but sometimes I'm in the mood for it. *****

"Piss On The Wall" - I recall playing this one in secret because I knew it definitely WOULD piss off my parents if they heard it (and I normally never felt a need to do that). It's a great rockabilly-style groover, really funny too. *****

Ya know, 50's rock 'n roll is still some of the best rock ever made and if you can appreciate that as well as have a taste for the slightly weird, you might really go for this album. An 80's classic.

4 out of 5 stars Freeze Frame ~ The J. Geils Band.......2005-12-14

When I was young I heard the song Centerfold, I was totally surprised and I wanted to hear more of this band. And here is the result of my interest: FREEZE FRAME. It certainly an enjoyable item, but not 5 stars, cause I went into the Metal-direction a few months after this buy. But this album is quite good, you know. It's all happy pop music with a lot of keyboard, but it's nice. But when I'm really angry, I only get a headache of this. Anyway, all of the songs are good, except River Blindness. This one ain't really bad, but it's just too longwinded. And I really get a headache from this song (even when I'm not upset:). See my tracklist rating:

Freeze-Frame: 9/10
Rage In The Cage: 7/10
Centerfold: 9/10
Do You Remember When: 8/10
Insane, Insane again: 7/10
Flamethrower: 8/10
River blindness: 5/10
Angel In Blue: 8/10
Piss On The Wall: 10/10

That was my review!

Don't buy into the clichéd idea that something commercially successful can't still be a work of genius, that's preposterous. Let's cut to the chase - this CD ROCKS THE HOUSE and has been legendary since it's release. Buy it, and you will listen to it many, many times. I couldn't give this CD enough stars.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Godley And Creme Selling Out?.......2007-02-09

Uh, not quite. These two albums are not quite as deranged as past classic Godley and Creme albums like Consequences and L. But this is a relative thing: while relatively, these albums are pop music compared to their earlier stuff, if Britney Spears was to release this music, it would either kill her career or garner her great critical respect. Somebody else here said that "Freeze Frame" mixed the melodic aspect of Consequence with the weird arrangements of L, and I couldn't agree more. The songs here are MUCH more tuneful than on L, but the arrangements almost reach the level of strangness of L. For example, I Pity Inanimate Objects, with the strangely encoded vocals, and Random Brainwave, which definitely sounds like it. In some ways their strongest albums, as it mixes their weirdness with their tunefulness better than anything since 10cc.

Ismism (or Snack Attack) is more of the same in many ways. The songs continue to grow more melodic, and less twisted. However, the album still has much to chew on: two of their biggest hits in Under Your Thumb and Wedding Bells. Lots of weirdness on the album, it is however more "normal" than one would expect from the two. The preponderance of synthesizers might slightly date the album, but much less than on the next two albums.

4 out of 5 stars Two great Godley & Creme albums .......2004-08-03

If Godley & Creme had never made another record after they spilt from 10cc, they'd still have made a huge impact. "Freeze Frame" is one of their best most consistent album mixing the melodic approach on "Consequences" with the unusual arrangements seen on "L". The title track along with "I Pity Inanimated Objects" percolating beat at the heart of "An Englishman in New York" and "Brazilia" (featuring Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera)are all stand out tracks. What's more important, though, is the inclusion of the bonus tracks here. Some of them are little more than an excuse to experiment while other such as "Submarine" and "Wideboy" could easily have been included on one of their albums. Both of these tracks along with the rest of the bonus tracks on disc one were only available on CD before as part of the "Images" best of compilation.

The album "Ismism" aka "Snack Attack" features one of the duo's best and most popular tracks (outside of "Cry"). "Wedding Bells" has a soulful and powerful vocal from Kevin Godley. Once again many of the bonus tracks compare to their best work including the underrated and witty "Power Behind the Throne". The remastering for both albums is very good. I just wish that the 10cc back catalog had been treated with as much care particularly the stuff remastered by Roger Wake for the reissued Polygram CDs. Unfortunately, some of these (such as "Bloody Tourists") were botched during the mastering process.

Just a warning, the last bonus track on "Ismism" is the single edit of "An Englishman in New York" and "Submarine" is the instrumental version of "The Power Behind the Throne."

    5 out of 5 stars Great 2-fer.......2007-07-09

I thought their first solo effort "L" (c1977) was a little too self-indulgent though nicely produced, and would have rated it 3 stars, but Freeze-Frame (c1978) is consistently interesting and as good as their 10CC work. Paul McCartney provides some backing vocal on the final cut but you can't recognize him due to GC's production. Overall Freeze Frame is Very interesting, lots of various instrumentation, some Gizmo, percussion, layered harmonies, interesting studio tricks, clever lyrics, and Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) also plays guitar on most tunes. So mainly on the strength of Freeze Frame I would rate this a 5-star collection.

I knew I had to buy FREEZE FRAME when I heard "An Englishman in New York" playing in a record store way back in the days of vinyl. Every now and then I still find myself singing the title track. Innovative experimental "pop" at its best!

4 out of 5 stars The "Creme" of the Crop-great Godley & Creme 2fer.......2001-03-25

Two of the duo's finest albums L and Freeze Frame are tightly focused pop art masterpieces. The first album has a couple of guests most notably Andy MacKay from Roxy Music. His guitar playing counterpart from Roxy Phil Manzanera appears on Freeze Frame. His playing provides a interesting sonic backdrop for Lol and Kevin's songs. There's also an uncredited appearence by Paul McCartney on one track from Freeze Frame.

One Way has done a marvelous job of remastering both albums. The sound on Freeze Frame is a huge improvement on the Japanese CD released a couple of years ago (and at half the price!). The original album graphics are pretty faithfully reproduced. This is one of the better reissues released this year. One can only hope that One Way will see fit to reissue the rest of the duo's back catalog (and perhaps the out of print 10cc albums as well).

5 out of 5 stars Only 20 years after the invention of the CD..........2001-02-23

Halle-fricking-lujia! "L" is finally available on CD...with the long out-of-print "Freeze Frame" thrown in to boot! It's beautifully mastered with complete original artwork and lyrics. Very reasonably priced too. Godley & Creme fans the world over are rejoicing. At last, we can experience Lol & Kev's dry, ironic humor and fun, experimental arrangements without further wearing out our old Polydor LPs. For the uninitiated, Creme & Godley were half of the successful 70s British art-rock band 10cc, but left in 1976 to pursue more experimental music and multi-media projects. Their first solo effort, "Consequences" was a bold, sprawling 3-record set of electronic music, pop and Peter Cook dialogue which, while unique and groundbreaking, was difficult to listen to in an age of punk, disco, funk and SoCal rock. Godley & Creme, for their next efforts, put out albums with (relatively) easy-to-digest Zappa-esque collegiate compositions that, in retrospect, should have sold better. But "L" and "Freeze Frame" were critically-acclaimed masterpieces that solidified their fanbase. "L" was the cleverest, most deadpan and socially poignant album of the duo's career. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together was rolling on the floor back in '78 before the second track even started. "Business Is Business" is a brilliant companion to Elvis Costello's "Radio Radio", coincidentally from the same year. "Freeze Frame", the best-selling G&C album; was more serious, sophisticated, introspective and paranoid, but no less innovative or entertaining than its predecessors. Check out the note Lol holds at the end of the title track! Though more accessible, G&C managed to work the Gizmo (a mini-synthesizer they were marketing at the time) into the arrangements of these albums to great effect. It's surprising they didn't sell better than they did. Though their music didn't make a huge dent (other than influencing other artists), their video direction and production made G&C media darlings of the 80s. One-Way Records is to be commended for releasing these albums (as well as "Consequences"), continuing their long history of fortifying my CD collection with Camel, Gentle Giant, etc. Long may they reissue!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cd's you'll find at Amazon.com.......2001-01-24

I've waited since the invention of cd's for Godley&Creme's "L" album to appear on cd. If you like your music melodic, rhythmically interesting - if you like singers that can sing, and players that can play - and can play with inventiveness and brilliance - if you like lyrics intelligent, artistic and witty, you'll love this. "L" is a masterpiece, and the other album is 99% as good. These people have nothing to declare but their combined genius.

5 out of 5 stars Walter Gropius Is Alive And Well and Collaborating with haujobb.......2005-08-04

This is music Walter Gropius would have designed to coincide with his Bauhaus concept of design: clean, sterile, functional, with a theme of industrial function to incorporate a sense of livabilty within a new order of adaptability.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST OWN cd for fans of "electronic" & "industrial" music.......2005-01-10

I agree with most of the other reviewers that Freeze Frame Reality has a more polished production quality & sound than Homes and Gardens, but isn't as consistent in it's style through out the album. Which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Homes and Gardens is a more danceable album - but this album, FFR, is still my personal favourite, with all of it's interesting layers & varied intensities. FFR album has a broad spectrum of emotions attached to it. From numbness and frigid emotional detachment to anger, angst and to haunting depression with the lyrics within "Solid State Logic". I believe Freeze Frame Reality to be the best example of Daniel Meyer having utilized his talent(s). Also there is the added bonus of the track 11 re-mix by Mentallo & the Fixer. : )

Freeze Frame Reality is a must own album for any lover/listener of electronic and industrial music. This album makes a perfect soundtrack for long drives, especially at night. Everyone has those albums that they love to drive to, this one will surely become one of them.

If you are interested in Project Pitchfork (old albums such as Entities, Lam 'Bras, Dhyani or IO), Wumpscut, Leather Strip, Front 242, Massive Attack, Recoil, or Front Line Assembly, Babyland, etc - you will most likely enjoy this album very much.

            stand out songs:
Solid State Logic begins this moody & intense album with the lyrics: "I don't want to be scared anymore, or to kill anymore. I don't want to kill anymore. I dont want to be alone anymore. I don't want to be anything anymore. I don't need a reason to kill myself. I need a reason not to." (which are samples from the suicide note in the 1992 film 'Single White Female').
Dream Aid follows as a multi layered & more fast-paced (& danceable) track. there is so much to listen to within this track! imo, it cleary demonstrates Daniel Meyer's enormous talent. also, the lyrics are dark, brooding and intelligent. my favourite track.
Consciousness is more atmosphermic, the beat very catchy
Perfect Average is a more aggresive track with more guitar & more samples from the 1992 film Single White Female: when Hedra is about to kill Alli she says; "I can't I can't.." / "Oh God oh God.." is taken from Hedra's masturbation scene & of course there is the scream.. )
Nezzwerk is another favourite of mine. it lends a feeling of claustrophobia & insomnia, and although it is not a danceable song (imho), it is another great song for long drives.
Trivial has great beats, especially towards the end of song!!
World Window do you like to feel like you are trapped inside a spy movie? this song is for you! it's extremely angst driven & very danceable. probably the most played Haujobb song from this album at "Industrial/Goth" Clubs.
Analysis this song should make it onto set lists more often at clubs interesting beats & layers. slower than some of the other tracks on the album, but still one of the best songs and great to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars Haujobb is reality.......2004-12-31

One of my favorite Haujobb CDs, more developed than Homes and Gardens, but not worse than Solutions. I enjoy this CD more than Solutions actually. There is just something about this one, very atmoshpheric and moody. A great night time album. Haujobb doesn't dissapoint.

            5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2004-04-09

Haujobb's melodies hang like a dark ambiance over layers of complex, futuristic beats to create a synthesis of sonic brilliance. Freeze Frame Reality, although sometimes deceptively emotionless and cold, is laden with anxiety and isolation. It is not grinding industrial, nor is it danceable, catchy synthpop. It is something far more subtle, akin to walking down cool gray corridors of sound. In a genre growing stale with repetitive dance-electronica acts, this album is anything but. At times minimalist, at times driving, but always laced with a haunting mix of machinery and melancholia, Freeze Frame Reality is captivating, intelligent, and, simply put, unforgettable.

            5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2002-11-21

I am being dead serious that this is the CD that got me into what people would call "Industrial" music. Up until I got into music I was into stuff like Tool and Metalica. The most I ever strayed into the electronic realm was stuff like Crystal Method and Prodigdy. Since I got this Freeze Frame Reality now listen to nothing else but industrial music (and some poppy stuff like Prodigy). I now have an entire radio show dedicated to industrial music all becaues I found the true essence of what it means to make music not money and that I found in Daniel Myer, Haujobb, and Freeze Frame Reality.
Freeze Frame is easily the best CD that Daniel Myer has made. Now, I am not saying that this easy CD to get into, because its not. None of Meyer's stuff is easy to pick up right away, but once you take the time to listen to one of his songs, you realize the genius he puts behind his music.
This music is very dark to say the least, and if you listen to synth pop stay away. I have tons of people call into my show when I play VNV Nation, but they hate dark stuff like this. If you are a fan a intelligent music like Autchre you might like this. Fans of Skinny Puppy or Black Lung defiantly need to look at this album. I said this album is dark, but I also think it is far from gothic, although a lot of people would disagree with. If you listen to a lot of "gothic" music then it sounds nothing like this.
