From the perspective of musical genres, Lullaby Baxter is neither fish nor fowl. Her backing band on Capable Egg is the San Francisco-area Oranj Symphonette, an outfit that boasts a couple of Tom Waits's former collaborators. But Capable Egg doesn't sound like Oranj's usual fare--no Mancini or Morricone. Instead, Baxter creates a vocal-fronted mix that integrates samba, floating acoustic jazz, and lilting pop. There are elements of Waits's world-view and musical approach ("Rooster in Love") and a subtly pervasive mood that recalls Patricia Barber in spots and then more vaguely the genre-bending flange in late-1990s jazz that extends (in spirit) from Medeski Martin & Wood to the Jazz Mandolin Project. Baxter handles lyrics with a delicacy that disarms and a frankness that charms. She's instantly engaging, and the lyrical content is strangely constructed and wonderfully imaginative. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and...Nothing quite like it..........2006-08-02

Don't you love how one of the most incredible CD's costs a mere $0.60? The term `criminally overlooked' applies here. The only other music that comes close to sharing Lullaby Baxter Trio's timeless yet out-of-time feel would be that of the SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS. I'm frankly amazed the two never toured together. Even Zippers fans had a hard time getting a handle on what kind of music they made, calling it a mix of Dixieland with Hot Jazz. Well, then Lullaby Baxter Trio's "Capable Egg" might be a hybrid of pop-torch-singing with a dash of Hot Country. This is, of course, a bit of a joke.

Expert and slightly stripped musicianship is lent from Tom Waits' affiliates. Slide guitar is featured on "Ding-A-Ling," cello for "The Anyway Song," bossa-nova acoustic guitar on "Knucklehead," and a gorgeous clarinet solo on "Mr. Powder Blue Breadbox." So, it's slightly impossible to spot a pre-existing genre or niche for this album. Perhaps it's because "Capable Egg" is content with being itself; entirely UNIQUE. The glue tying the affair together is Lullaby Baxter's assured one-of-a-kind contralto voice, as well as the brilliantly subversive nursery-rhyme lyrics of her co-writer Lutwidge Sedgwick. It's an unfettered sound and scope I challenge anyone to lable.

Beneath the cotton-candy veil of perfectly crafted fables are themes of loathing, misogyny, narcissism, death, sexuality, aching insecurity, illicit behavior, and exploration. And as these topics are examined, the album's playful context never becomes stale or gimmick-y, but rather acts as an ironic back-drop endearing one to Lullaby Baxter's humor, humanity, grit and glitter.

5 out of 5 stars Rejuvenating, makes me smile when I drive!.......2004-05-04

A friend shared this disc with me about 2 years ago and it's been the gift that keeps on giving. I listened to it over and over again and loved the lightness and levity. I recently found it again and was instantly hooked and charmed once more. I pop in when I'm in the car and I forget about traffic. It made a lonely 3.5 hour drive a dream. The lyrics are kooky and fun, whimsical yet full of truth. There's always something deeper lurking beneath the whimsy. And Lullaby's voice is sultry, smooth, and rich -- like vocal milk chocolate. A rare treat.

This is the gift I'm giving 2 friends who need cheer, I'm certain it will lift their spirits. If lyrics and music like this don't make you crack a smile, you're hopeles -- this disc is that good!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2002-02-21

The official review here do a wonderful job of capturing this delightful cd. What I'll add, is that everyone I've forced this cd on, has been politely indulgent upon seeing the cover art.... AND, each and every one has come back saying they loved it.

4 out of 5 stars A change of pace hoot!.......2001-01-28

There is just too little music like this out there that is thisenjoyable. "Capable Egg" was lent to me by a friend whoknows my fondness for quirky blends of sophistication and whimsey andthis collection of songs has become an instant favorite. Shades ofMerrie Amsterberg, Madeline Peyroux and Lisa Lauren, each tune amusesand enthralls.

5 out of 5 stars just what I needed..........2000-08-25

Seems a little redundant to rave about this one, but I mainly wanted to assert that Canadians aren't the only ones who know a good thing when they hear one. Long Beach loves it too! I was wondering to what happened to the guys who backed Tom Waits in his heyday, and I'm glad to hear they've kept on the golden path. Now if Baxter can hold on to her amazing voice a bit better than Waits did...
