Back before one is a genius, one is a hustling schlub who thinks he's a genius, and Bacharach never completely left the Brill Building, even in the '70s when he turned up his collar and started writing symphonies about what women are allegedly about. This oft-reissued 1965 date for Kapp (augmented by a touch of earlier material) is the pop calm before the full-blown storm of his post-"What's New Pussycat?" career onA&M. There's an orchestra and white bread chorus, all right, but the results are relatively unpretentious, and you might be surprised by the endless number of hits he'd written before the peak: "Walk On By", "A House is Not a Home", "Wives and Lovers", etc. No Dionne, but Bacharach makes his Muzak count in a manner that Neil Diamond, after much effort, never has. There's still time, though. --D. Strauss

Nice for background.......2004-06-15
However, part of the magic in his songs were teh lyrics that accompanied them. I'm not saying that this CD is bad. If you know the songs, you can sing along as if it were a karaoke disc. I enjoy it as background when words are too distracting in music.
Bruised and Beleaguered "Bach".......2001-01-12
At times you can actually hear the beauty of Bacharach's music spilling out from the undercarriage of this heavy, lumbering recording. Mostly though, listening to this collection is as pleasant as being trapped in a stalled elevator for 30 minutes with the only other passenger badly singing and humming along to the canned music! "What's New Pussycat" and "My Little Red Book", especially, will make most anyone cry "GET ME OUTTA HERE!!!!"
Buyer beware. Unless you plan on getting tanked on Rob Roys first, this CD will certainly NOT be easy listening...
The Phenomenon called Burt Bach(arach).......2000-10-27
Putting the Bach back in Bacharach..........2000-10-24
Remember, "Bach-" means "Good" and "-arach" means "Even Better," and this album proves it.
