Back before one is a genius, one is a hustling schlub who thinks he's a genius, and Bacharach never completely left the Brill Building, even in the '70s when he turned up his collar and started writing symphonies about what women are allegedly about. This oft-reissued 1965 date for Kapp (augmented by a touch of earlier material) is the pop calm before the full-blown storm of his post-"What's New Pussycat?" career onA&M. There's an orchestra and white bread chorus, all right, but the results are relatively unpretentious, and you might be surprised by the endless number of hits he'd written before the peak: "Walk On By", "A House is Not a Home", "Wives and Lovers", etc. No Dionne, but Bacharach makes his Muzak count in a manner that Neil Diamond, after much effort, never has. There's still time, though. --D. Strauss

4 out of 5 stars Nice for background.......2004-06-15

Burt Bacharach composed some really nice songs back in his time and this is a compilation of "instrumental" versions of some of his songs.

However, part of the magic in his songs were teh lyrics that accompanied them. I'm not saying that this CD is bad. If you know the songs, you can sing along as if it were a karaoke disc. I enjoy it as background when words are too distracting in music.

1 out of 5 stars Bruised and Beleaguered "Bach".......2001-01-12

If the music of Burt Bacharach is like an elegant, gleeming '65 Lincoln Continental then this CD is a rusted-out clunker with the fine Corinthian leather cracked and peeling...

At times you can actually hear the beauty of Bacharach's music spilling out from the undercarriage of this heavy, lumbering recording. Mostly though, listening to this collection is as pleasant as being trapped in a stalled elevator for 30 minutes with the only other passenger badly singing and humming along to the canned music! "What's New Pussycat" and "My Little Red Book", especially, will make most anyone cry "GET ME OUTTA HERE!!!!"

Buyer beware. Unless you plan on getting tanked on Rob Roys first, this CD will certainly NOT be easy listening...

5 out of 5 stars The Phenomenon called Burt Bach(arach).......2000-10-27

Ladies and Gentlemen, Burt Bacharach is the best musician ever. He really should be called Bach, when you listen to the magnificent beats, the glorious strums of goiters, I mean guitars, haha, and the drum beats performed by the Maestro of drums, you will understand what I am talking about. Burt is so incredible, when I first heard this album I thought I was dreaming, I was so amazed at the depth and validity every one of his songs CONTAINS. Burtie will certainly knock your socks off if you've never heard him.

5 out of 5 stars Putting the Bach back in Bacharach..........2000-10-24

When I think of Burts, I don't think of Ernie's friend on Sesame street, or Burt Reynolds; I don't wish them any specific harm of course but -- as this album proves -- the only Burt for me is Bacharach. His soothing sounds and punchy lyrics lift me up in the elevator of his song to the 777th floor of heavenly bliss. "Don't go breaking my heart" is an undoubted classic, of course, but the real gem here is "Saturday Sunshine," previously unreleased due to a hideous, unpardonable offense by the otherwise mostly benign music industry.

Remember, "Bach-" means "Good" and "-arach" means "Even Better," and this album proves it.
