It's sometimes easy to dismiss the offspring of legendary musicians, but not Adam Cohen. He may have learned to write music around the kitchen table with dad Leonard, but this 25-year-old with a bohemian upbringing has carved a voice distinctly his own on his self-titled debut. Not desperately seeking fame but diligently working toward making a credible entry into the industry, Cohen spent most of the decade leading up to his first album playing in various bands and putting together demos. The result is a poignant collection of songs that, while both mellow and darkly seductive, have a bite that separates him from the pack of faux-sensitive artists currently in oversupply. Cohen admits the CD is largely autobiographical, albeit a bit exaggerated--which may be a good thing, considering the intense jealousy that imbues "Quarterback" and the confrontation of "Tell Me Everything." --Rebecca Wallwork

New Musical Express
Ultimately, though, you know he's succeeded in becoming a fully-fledged modern American singer-songwriter, because most of this is overwrought but underwritten, since he's neglected to include any discernible tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Gould: the Genius of Recorded Music!.......2005-01-31

Gould was playing Schoenberg in the 1950s--just shortly after the composer's death. He realizes the Op. 11 pieces in a very late-Brahmsian manner, in keeping with his gestalt of turn-of-the-century Modern music, viz., Brahms, Strauss, Scriabin, Schoenberg, Hindemith, et al.

The Op. 25 Suite is an exquisite refraction of a Bach French Suite--but done in Schoenberg's 12-tone form. Here Gould plays Schoenberg as he does Bach!

Gould's realization of Schoenberg's Piano Concerto is very secco (dry), and intentionally miked very closely: i.e., the recording was made with microphones placed close to the performers, rather than way back out in the audience area of a hall. This was Gould's idea, and the results are outstanding: the best Schoenberg Piano Concerto available--pace, Uchida and Brendel, et al.

Gould's Pierrot is his first attempt at conducting, and one wishes he had completed it and done more. In the end, Gould conducted Wagner's Siegfried Idyll with outstanding results.

This is a great set.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive interpretation of Schoenberg piano works.......2003-12-27

While other pianists dabbled at these fine pieces, none other than Glenn Gould provides the definitive interpretation of Schoenberg's piano works. Thoroughly studied, Gould presents the serialism clearly and presents the dimensions of the revolutionary works.

By detaching yourself from the tonality of traditional tonal music, and immersing in the world of Schoenberg, the shape and lines of the music will gradually become clear. Gould is perhaps the greatest advocate and messenger of Schoenberg's distinct language.

5 out of 5 stars Keep listening.......2000-09-13

These are difficult pieces for me. They require concentrated listening, and challenge my understanding of music. Sometimes, I don't like what I hear, and other times, it's just too much work to listen to very much of this. However, when I am able to devote some time to listening with an understanding mind, I am amply rewarded. I have listened to this CD for several years and I will probably never understand this music. I do enjoy listening and learning from it, though. I am thankful that someone as talented as Glenn Gould has interpreted these pieces. If you are interested in one of the most important composers of the twentieth century, or one of the greatest legends of the keyboard, this CD will interest you. To paraphrase what Moby wrote on his CD, Animal Rights, "Please listen to this CD completely at least once."

4 out of 5 stars The "least dry" Schoenberg ever.......1999-11-10

I believe wholeheartedly that, for the uninitiated, this disc is difficult to truly appreciate without having heard other pianists attempt these pieces (e.g., Pollini). To enjoy listening to Schoenberg necessitates a certain familiarity with prolonged "dissonance", just like strong coffee or unfiltered beer--it takes some getting used to. If you're already there, it's not "dissonant", it's "music" (just like other alternate melodic conceptions-raga, gamelan, mbira, partch, etc.), and Gould's passionate readings here display his love for and understanding of the music's heart. Go Glenn.

4 out of 5 stars A Master Pianist Plays His Favorites.......1999-04-08

Schoenberg's rigid mathematics, his triads, his serialism, his tonal abilities, when demonstated through his piano pieces (especially through these piano pieces) allow a pianist with the mechanical ability and inspired play of Glenn Gould the chance to demonstrate how to hear, feel and convey a music that, to many listeners, often reflects, upon fist listen, chaos. But the music on this 2 CD set is not to be listened to merely once. Glenn Gould, master pianist, is playing his favorite works by one of his favorite composers. The Schoenberg basher will hear more chaos than in other recordings of these piano pieces, merely because Gould's sure fingers, his hands, are as revolutionary as the music he is playing.

Album Description

"This is one of the purest and most touching compositions you have ever written," wrote fellow émigré composer Ernst Toch to his friend Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco after hearing his cantata Naomi and Ruth. For Castelnuovo-Tedesco, America offered new opportunities to deepen and develop his Italian musical heritage and his Jewish spirituality. He dreamed that he might hear his Sacred Service "once in the synagogues of Florence," but instead this major work was premiered at New York's Park Avenue Synagogue, establishing a long tradition of contemporary sacred Jewish music commissioned from leading composers.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A little bland........2004-02-06

Castelnuovo-Tedesco, best-known probably for his 1939 guitar concerto, wrote music that I don't believe can be called strongly memorable. It's expertly written, at times even beautiful, but it seems to disappear as soon as it's over. Furthermore, he never seemed to find himself, or at least to establish a strong artistic personality. At his best, he resorts to a neoclassic idiom. Most of the time, the music, despite its occasional prettiness, doesn't sound like much of anything.

The works here the composer wrote near or at the top of his game. Naomi and Ruth, a little cantata, tells the familiar story, with the soprano soloist taking the part of Naomi and the chorus taking over the narration and the words of Ruth. It's an almost archetypal example of the composer's unevenness, in that the music for the chorus is much stronger than that for the soprano. The Sacred Service has its moments, but large stretches of it simply go by. My favorite parts of the CD were the excerpts from the organ preludes, Prayers My Grandfather Wrote, and especially from the Memorial Service for the Departed. Here, whatever engagement the composer had with his inspiration manages to cross over to the listener.

The performances are mostly top-drawer, with Neville Marriner leading an outstanding Naomi and Ruth. The choir and orchestra knock you out with their precision and tone. By comparison, Ronald Corp's Sacred Service sounds muddy, and the baritone soloist, Ted Christopher, suffers from what sounds like occasional vocal tiredness. Organist Barbara Harbach gives an intense account of the Prayers, and canto Simon Spiro (though of modest voice) nevertheless sings beautifully and with wonderful communication in the Memorial Service. Indeed, the composer gets such strong performances, it may be difficult to separate one's pleasure in the singers and players from the pleasure in the work.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely Friday night service and a moving story of Ruth.......2004-01-28

The major work is the Sacred Service for Sabbath Eve. It seems that this work was intended to be performed in a Reform or Conservative synagogue as a Friday night service. Complete Jewish service settings are rare. Few synagogues today would care to use this work as a service: Reform and Conservative congregations generally value participatory services and congregational singing, while Orthodox congregations do not use organ or mixed choirs (among other reasons). There is also a general trend away from communal Friday evening services in the U.S. (unfortunate, IMHO). The details of Jewish services and liturgy are very complex, varying with the season of the year, the branch of Judaism, Ashkenazik vs. Sephardic, and local tradition. These variations make it difficult to compose a large scale work that will be generally compatible with ritual worship. Happily there is a home for such works (also including the Milhaud and Bloch sacred services) on record, and (hopefully more often as a result of the Milken project) in concert.
Orthodox listeners should be warned that in this recording Hashem's names are pronounced as in prayer.
The mood is generally one of reverent awe, with the exceptions of the Mi Chamocha and the Kiddush, which are exuberently joyful. If you are a regular attendee at Friday night services you will enjoy hearing the familiar words in a skillfully arranged and heartfelt musical context.
The short cantata Naomi and Ruth tells the story, in English, of how Ruth came to adopt the faith of her mother-in-law, Naomi. It is generally for two-part women's chorus with a soloist in the role of Naomi. The choral writing is polyphonic, but allows the words to be clearly understood. The music is melodic and emotionally engaging, flowing with the natural cadences of English. The orchestration is exquisite. (Note the use of dry trumpets accenting the word famine, and the deaths of the husbands.) Ravkein's objection that the crucial words "my god" are missing is a typo in the booklet text; the words do appear in the cantata.
The selections from Memorial Service are pleasant, and Mr. Spiro sings them beautifully and delicately.
The essays in the booklet are outstanding. The tracking information and performer credits, the absence of which Ravkein noted, are on the back of the jewel box.

3 out of 5 stars Another side of a film composer........2004-01-17

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music is an ambitious enterprise which provides an opportunity to hear other aspects of composers that we identify with one genre. The project bespeaks extensive research and calls on such stellar performers as Neville Marriner and the Academy & Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. The music does not justify these rich resources.
Castelnuovo(-Tedesco) was one of the many emigres, most of them Jewish, who came to America fleeing from the Kingdom of Night. Presumably because of the opportunities provided by the film industry, most of them poured their creative inspiration into movies. Most were unable to return to, or gain a hearing for, their classical music, Erich Wolfgang Korngold being an exception.
Naomi and Ruth is pleasant if not profound. The Sacred Service selections are fragmentary and generally unrewarding, perhaps because the composer was not religious.
The album challenges the most educated listener to identify the cues and performers. This advertisement on Amazon tells us more about the 22 cues than the booklet. (The time is almost 70 minutes.) We are unable to identify the men who sing, one of whom is not introduced to us. The identification of the translations from Jewish Scriptures is incomplete The most important words from Ruth 1:16, "(and thy God,) MY GOD" are omitted from the text (page 13).
The composer was involved in the preparation of 200 films. This disk exposes us to another side of him, not especially distinguished.

4 out of 5 stars Jewish Music by Castelnuovo-Tedesco.......2003-10-22

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) was an Italian-born Sephardic Jew who, like many other European Jews, emigrated to the United States in the 1930s. He was helped by Jascha Heifetz to get settled into Hollywood where he wrote numerous film scores. (The name 'Tedesco,' which means 'German' in Italian and which implies Ashkenazi heritage, was actually tacked onto the family name 'Castelnuovo' [originally, in Spanish, 'Castilla Nueva'] to incorporate the name of a wealthy Ashkenazi paternal uncle by marriage who had no children and wanted his family name perpetuated.) Before his emigration Castelnuovo-Tedesco had been a student of Ildebrando Pizzetti (now there's a composer whose music is due some attention) and was an emerging composer whose music, at the rise of Mussolini and Hitler, could no longer be played in Italy and the Germanic countries. Although not himself particularly observant in his early adult years, he became more interested after his emigration in providing music for religious purposes. All the music here reflects some aspect of that interest.

The 11-minute cantata 'Naomi and Ruth,' set to an English text from the Book of Ruth (1:1-17) tells the well-loved story of Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth. It tells how, after both their husbands had died, when Naomi was moving from Ruth's native Moab back to her own homeland, Judah, Ruth refused to abandon Naomi. It is set for soprano solo, women's chorus and orchestra. The words of Naomi are sung by the soprano; in this recording the lovely-voiced and impressive Ana Maria Martínez is the soloist. She is sensitively accompanied by Sir Neville Marriner conducting the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Aptly dramatic, the music is tonal, somber, mildly contrapuntal and entirely accessible.

'Prayers My Grandfather Wrote' (excerpts) is a set a organ variations based on a theme written by Castelnuovo-Tedesco's maternal grandfather, Bruto Senigaglia. The theme is a nine-note motto that, in the two variations excerpted here, is worked out contrapuntally by the composer. It is, on the present evidence, a fairly negligible piece, played nicely by organist Barbara Harbach. Apparently it meant a great deal to Castelnuovo-Tedesco as it was played at a memorial service after his death.

Three pieces are excerpted from the composer's 'Memorial Service fo the Departed,' here sung by Cantor Simon Spiro, the New York Cantorial Choir, and McNeil Robertson, organ, conducted by Neil Levin. These pieces are intensely moving--not particularly Jewish-sounding except for the Hebrew words--and quite beautiful. Cantor Spiro has a beautiful tenor voice capable of declaiming dramatically or singing as in a hushed lullaby. Levin is the artistic director of the project of which this CD is a part: the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music, being issued on Naxos. There have been four earlier issues in this series but I have not heard them.

The longest and most ambitious piece on the CD is the 40-minute 'Sacred Service for the Sabbath Eve, Op. 122.' The participating musicians are Ted Christopher, baritone; Jeremy Cohen, tenor; Rabbi Rodney Mariner, narrator; Hugh Potton, organ; The London Chorus; all conducted by Ronald Corp. It was composed in 1943 for a Reform congregation and thus the texts are from the reform Union Prayer Book. He separately set other prayers that were later added to the composition. The première of the full Sacred Service was given in 1950. Castelnuovo-Tedesco considered trying to write a monodic piece, in keeping with what was thought to be ancient custom, but gave up that idea and wrote it in his accustomed style, which could be described as polyphonic, tonal, with some chromatic excursions and melismatic decoration. Particularly moving are the opening movement, 'Ma Tovu,' ('How lovely are your dwellings, O House of Israel') which is choral with interjections by the baritone soloist, and 'Kiddush,' ('Praised be You, O Lord') which features the strong tenor of Jeremy Cohen (the only one of the soloists who for some reason did not merit a blurb about his background and career). The final, canonic and ultimately triumphant 'Adon Olam' ('Lord of the world, who reigned before form was created') ends with the reassuring 'The Lord is with me: I fear not.'

Heretofore I had only known some of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's lighter music and I have to say I was impressed with his skills here. He certainly was capable of writing memorable melodies and limning emotional states musically. All the performances here are more than adequate and in some instances (particularly the excerpts from the Memorial Service, and the cantata 'Ruth and Naomi') transcendent.

3 out of 5 stars Worth the effort..........2005-04-05

I had a bit of trouble getting my hands on this record as it was never released in Australia. I ordered it from here soon after I found this out.

After hearing it all a few times, I thought I'd write a review on it. I don't understand why people compare Adam to his father Leonard, when their music is completely different.

This self titled album is surprisingly cool. I would consider it an infusion of Jeff Buckley and Alex Lloyd with a flair of originality.

My favourite tracks are DON'T MEAN ANYTHING, QUARTERBACK, HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN.

If you dig this 'straight people music' then I highly recommend it. Don't get me wrong, I still love this CD. I just wish it was easier to get over here.

Technically I give it 3 and a half stars.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this CD!.......2004-03-24

Have been playing this CD on a regular basis since I bought it. "Amazing" from start to finish. Anxiously awaiting his sophmore effort.

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2003-01-06

While the lyrics imply that he has taken on some of his fathers pain, it appears that he has all the emotions to be a great songwriter. You will find yourself searching for the words. His voice is nothing like his fathers, however it is soft and strong - very pleasant to listen to. I'd say Adam is on his way to much success.

4 out of 5 stars Genes will out...even if it takes awhile........2002-07-30

I admit that I am a huge fan of Adam's daddy, and that I discovered Adam via the Leonard Cohen home page. As a writer, to me the lyrics are everything, so I bought the CD at a place where I could preview the cuts and make certain I could understand the words. First play didn't impress. Though it is engineered beautifully, it was too pop for my taste. On later plays, the soul hidden beneath the rhythms grew on me. It's now one of my favorites for long drives. In one respect, he is far too much like his father. Adam, how long do we have to wait for CD #2?

4 out of 5 stars Good debut.......2001-06-02

A promising debut, and I think it's about time he releases another album. One thing I don't understand though, is why some people bought this album just because they are fans of his father. This is not Leonard, this is Adam, and he does not try to copy his father in any way. He has his own style of singing and songwriting that is more than able to stand on its own merits. Every song on here is good, although I must admit I am not too keen on "Quarterback". I think it's a bit too angry and crude, but that aside, this album is certainly worth having. the 12 page booklet includes all lyrics.

This recording first turned me on to early european music when it was released. If you are at all interested in this type of music or even just curious it is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining, and wonderful.......2005-09-27

This is another stellar production by Erato, of the Camerata Mediterranea, under the direction of Joel Cohen. In my collection, I treat this disc as a companion piece to the collection 'The Sacred Bridge' by the Boston Camerata, which has sacred music from the Jewish and Christian traditions in the Middle Ages. This disc concentrates on secular music of the age of the minstrels and troubadours. Much is anonymous, both in lyric writing and musical composition. Indeed, according to Cohen, 'virtually all the minstrels' instrumental music of the troubadour period has been lost, and was perhaps never written down.' Musicians and musicologists have to rely on the folk tunes and later compositions known to incorporate themes to reconstruct as best they can the music from this period.

The performances of troubadours was sometimes a capella, but more often accompanied by plucked string sounds such as harp and viola. Cohen argues that the wind and percussion instruments of many recordings are less likely to be authentic. These are story/text driven songs.

One of the interesting aspects of authentic troubadour music is that performers were recruited not on the basis of music merit, but rather on connection with Occitan/Provencal as a primary consideration. For this recording, Anne Azema, Francois Harismendy, and Jean-Luc Madier have living Occitan connections. Joel Cohen, Cheryl Ann Fulton and Shira Kammen round out the players.

The songs (chansons) are divided into six main story lines, with improvised musical interludes. Troubadours told stories with their songs, and this disc is no different.

The performances are wonderful, lively, fun and full of energy. One can imagine being in a medieval chamber being entertained.

5 out of 5 stars Three Juilliard Quartets explore Bartok--a must-listen.......2006-08-19

This CD is unique in that it gives us the Juilliard Qt. in Bartok across five decades. Quartet #4 dates from 1949 when the young, newly formed group made their first Bartok cycle. Quartet #3 is from 1963, memorializing their second, and most renowned cycle. Quartet #6 is from 1981, representing their third, and least regarded, cycle. We move from mono to digital stereo and stylistically from new-found wonder to mature assurance.

Competing against themselves is tough, but all three cycles have their virtues, and depending on what you happen to like on this CD, each cycle can be tracked down on Pearl (1950--my personal favorite), Retrospective (1963--the critics' general favorite) and Sony (1981--a great bargain). Bartok was the Juilliard's best composer, so none of these sets is negligible. It's true that the advent of the Alban Berg and Emerson Quartets put the Juilliard into the shade technically, but having said that, every performance on this CD is superlative, and the first from 1949 is one-of-a-kind. .

5 out of 5 stars This album is my stuff.......2004-12-06

I love Adam's band Low Millions, so it was a quick jump to this album. I don't think that great pop sensibility of his is as well developed here, and the whale-catching hooks aren't present, but this is still a great listen. Delicately crafted, lovely little chansons... I hope the solo stuff keeps coming alongside Low Millions, rather than one negating the other...

        4 out of 5 stars C'est belle, vraiment.......2004-11-22

I like the new Low Millions album (Adam's band, who do songs in English), but this is a perfect companion, and gives you a good idea of just how talented this kid is. My French isn't so up to snuff, so I don't have all the lyrics down, but the same gift for melody is on hand... Start on Low Millions' Ex-Girlfriend, then suppliment liberally with this; you won't regret...

Wonderful medieval music for Christmas. (Even my kids like some of the tracks!).

        Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Performances of Brilliantly Researched Material.......2003-12-11

I bought the cassette version of this recording in the 1980's and was charmed by it immediately. The recording contains primarily obscure music from the 12th through 20th centuries. The researcher's acumen in recognizing gems among dusty manuscripts is matched by the rich, heartfelt performances presented here. Two unique touches enhance this already enchanting material. First, the recording includes readings about the Annunciation and the Baby Jesus in Middle English from Wycliffe's 14th Century translation of the New Testament. Second, there are two couplings of carols that segue into each other with such sublime grace that they sound as if they were intended by a master composer as part of a single work. Those are "Lullay, Thou Tiny Little Child" (20th Century American) with "The Coventry Carol" (16th Century English) and "While Shepherds Watched" with "Sherburne" (two 18th Century works). Since I acquired the recording in the late 1980's, no Christmas celebration for our family would be complete without it. I also strongly recommend the Waverly Consort's "Christmas Story," told through medieval music, re-released on CD this year, and their Renaissance Christmas recording.

5 out of 5 stars Sing We Noel- add to your collection.......2001-12-13

I have had this for years and it is by far the one that is played over and over. The voices and instrumentation are clear and beautifull without ever feeling sentimental. This authentically researched collection would probably suit the eclectic listener who appreciates classical and folk traditions.
