Wonderfully American.......2007-05-14
When I listen to this CD now, and which is most surpring to me, I hear a profound pride in America - back "before." I play it when I have people over and we put burgers on the grill. This CD is the song of sitting in my back yard with the clouds blowing by and for the moment things feel OK.
"Before" - OK, there is no old perfect Amercia; but I'm thinking of the time before we learned to distill petroleum into toxic pollution, before pride meant vanity and thuggery, before hate-filled invective became public amusement, and before presidents went to war because it was good for business.
A Gersh-winner.......2007-01-07
The existing films of Gershwin (who died of a brain tumor at age 38 in 1937) show him to be a virtuoso at his instrument. His 1924 acoustic recording of Rhapsody In Blue (with the Paul Whiteman orchestra) is further evidence of this. But no film or recording has what is contained within the album GERSHWIN PLAYS GERSHWIN: THE PIANO ROLLS, and that is-- full fidelity range.
The CD comes in a standard jewel case packaged in a heavy paper slipcover. Biographical liner notes are included along with details on the rolls. The earliest performance in this set is from 1916, made when Gershwin was an 18-year-old song plugger. My favorites here are "Swanee," from 1920, and "An American In Paris," from 1933, which is undoubtedly one of the last significant piano rolls ever made.
Gershwin's dynamic performances are not in the least obscured by the few extra notes added to the piano rolls (such practice was standard in those days). Listening to these recordings is like sitting next to this brilliant man, observing his fingers fly over the keys as he plays some of his best work.

Interesting... but I think I'd prefer a good Gershwin interpreter.......2006-05-14
This album is charming in its own way -- a taste of the music and performance style of a bygone era. Someone complained that these rolls were edited. So what? I'm going to review the final product, now how it was made. Do you eat sausage? Ask not what's in it!
I like to listen to this CD in short bits -- a few songs at a time. For some reason I find it to be fatiguing if I listen for more than 20 minutes or so. I'm not absolutely sure why this is so. Possibly the meter is just a little too metronomic on many of the songs. This lends a "mechanical" quality to the performances.
Additionally, I felt that the dynamic range was restricted. The music does get louder and softer, because of the piano rolls themselves and because of the computer programming used to read the piano rolls -- the dynamics were deliberately adjusted by the record producers in some spots, if I read the liner notes correctly. And yet. And yet. Still these songs do not dynamically "breathe" fully in and out the way they ought to. I find this disappointing, but I think it has something to do with inherent limitations in piano roll recording technique. I'm guessing.
Taken for what it is, it is an interesting concept, and the sound quality is very pleasant. The performances are very good for piano rolls, but fall short of what a good interpreter could do. Take, for example, the Rhapsody in Blue from Woody Allen's Manhattan soundtrack. Listen specifically to the piano part -- the dynamics and variations in rhythm. This is not by any means the best performance of Rhapsody, but it is better than the Gershwin rolls.
Gershwin's playing overated.......2006-04-09
transcriptions of Jelly Roll Morton's piano rolls (on the same label) instead because most of those are exactly how he played them and in my opinion Morton was a better musician in every way than Gershwin.

Part of the soundtrack of my high school years.......2006-06-23
Anyway, when I bought this album I expected an album's worth of songs in the same Eurodance style which I had grown to know and love thanks to Real McCoy, 2 Unlimited, Fun Factory, and (remember "The Rhythm Of The Night?") Corona. To my surprise, there were some slow jams here too! Despite being well-sung by Melanie, as is everything here, the slow jams - especially "I'll Be There" (which is NOT the Jackson Five/Mariah Carey classic) - aren't as memorable as the dancefloor thumpers. "Be My Lover," the title song, "I Love To Love" and "The Heat Is On" are all red-hot, catchy, well-crafted Eurodance classics. And it is the talents of Melanie Thornton that make them really special. In the hands of any other singer these songs wouldn't sound nearly as hot. There's also "Where Do You Go," which is ALMOST the same song that became a hit in 1996 for the Cuban-American trio No Mercy - I say "almost" because the verses are different. Equally fun is Le Click's "Tonight Is The Night," a #89 Hot 100 hit in 1995. (Of course, after Melanie and Lane McCray got together as La Bouche, Le Click continued on with a new singer named Kayo Shekoni who was sort of a soundalike for Melanie, and scored a Top 40 hit in 1997 with "Call Me.")
And there's an oldie here too - that would be "Fallin' In Love," the Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds #1 hit from 1975. The album version is a nice, breezy, mid-tempo pop tune that wouldn't sound out of place on adult contemporary radio. It's certainly far superior to the horrid Eurodance remix that was issued to radio stations after the success of "Be My Lover" and "Sweet Dreams." Actually, "Fallin' In Love" was originally La Bouche's first single in the United States in 1995, but it flopped, getting into the "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" chart for a few weeks and then vanishing. When it was re-promoted to radio the following year, RCA did not re-release the single and CHR stations played it as an album cut (though most of them, unfortunately, played the remix, which was not all that bad on its own, but was horrible compared to the album version).
In short, this is a more-than-competent survey of the mid-1990s Eurodance sound, with a pair of big hit singles and a few extras as well. La Bouche injected some soul into the Euro beats and came up with a winner. Rest in peace, Melanie, you are still missed.

One of the tragic figures in blues-rock, Roy Buchanan possessed chops that matched those of any of his more acclaimed contemporaries, including Eric Clapton. His recording accomplishments, however, were problematic. Despite forecasts of stardom that corresponded with his 1972 solo debut (the Arkansas- born virtuoso made his debut as a sideman 15 years earlier), Buchanan never found the perfect forum for instrumental expression. After years of frustration, he hung himself in a jail cell in 1986 after being arrested for drunk driving. This 2 CD anthology stands as the definitive overview of Buchanan's career, mixing the best of his '70s and '80s records with a generous assortment of unreleased tracks. --Steve StolderCustomer Reviews:
a limited legacy.......2007-05-18
The best example of a huge guitar talent "knowing his place" is the career of Ry Cooder. He astutely assembles some of the best instrumentalists and integrates his guitar work with their instruments. Think of John Hiatt's BRING THE FAMILY, recorded in the same year as Buchanan's suicide. It is a record that - thanks to its use of Cooder's guitar and his band - has a great range of snappy instrumental work and musical styles. BTF succeeds in lifting Hiatt's songwriting and vocals to a new level and it is arguably his best recording. By the way, Cooder draws from a broad spectrum of musical traditions, respects them and masters them.
By contrast the selections in this 2 CD set of the late Buchanan's career show him up as a monomaniacal bombast - a singular instrumentalist who turns his guitar work into pyrotechnical displays at the expense of everything else in his music. The band mostly seems along for the ride, providing filler for one intense telecaster solo after another, as the straining fretwork grows evermore tedious. Nearly all Buchanan's songs are covers of other musician's work, and this is the terrain of the bar/club band, cannibalizing the mainstream hits of commercially successful rockers for the consumers of Bud "longnecks." Buchanan strikes me as a bar band guitarist who metastasized into a talent that finally had no place to go.
Were Buchanan's monster guitar solos a compensation for his inadequate vocals? Perhaps, and his thin, high vocals sink his songs every time. Troubling, too, is the overworked version of "Hey Joe" here that takes on a surly misogynist edge that gave me the creeps - as if the murderous content needed any further menace from the singer. Was there a Mrs. Buchanan to wonder about her husband's approach to this song?
Sometimes you can tell a lot about a musician by their fans - especially those who REMAIN Buchanan fans. Terms like arrested development and perpetual adolescence come to mind. But I suppose someone has to keep the flame at a guitar god's shrine. For me, I'm a convinced "atheist" - unless a lost recording of a DIFFERENT Buchanan turns up to prove me wrong.

Could have been stronger as a single disc.......2005-07-05
Unfortunately, like many gifted guitar heroes, Roy's studio output was erratic. Most of the first CD, which features Roy's beautiful version of "Sweet Dreams" along with some fine blues covers, is some of the best instrumental music ever recorded. Sadly, Roy also had an absolutely terrible singing voice and either he or his producers insisted on recording vocal tracks. "The Messiah Will Come Again" works because Roy only delivers a spoken intro, but other songs are seriously marred by his flat, deadpan delivery. The second CD is even worse, this time including an overlong jam around "Green Onions".
Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of Roy's and his best material is some of my favorite music. As an anthology, however, I'd prefer that he were remembered for his very best music and not some of his most uneven. This could have been edited down to a very good single disc. Instead, we're left with a two-disc set that you'll end up skipping through huge sections out of necessity.

Singer Annie Lennox and guitarist Dave Stewart first received notice in the Tourists, scoring a big U.K. hit in 1979 with a cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be With You." Emerging as the Eurythmics in 1981, Lennox's cabaret-tinged vocal style and Stewart's left-of-center songs took a while to mesh, but when they finally did, with the haunting, hook-filled 1983 No. 1 single, "Sweet Dreams" (accompanied by one of the most striking videos ever made), the two found themselves rocketing to stardom. This, their second album, also features their initial British hit, "Love Is a Stranger," and an icy-cool cover of Sam and Dave's r&b classic, "Wrap It Up." --Billy AltmanThis edition has been digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes by Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart, with input from collaborator Annie Lennox. In addition, there are seven bonus tracks: a mixture of b-sides, remixes, and previously unreleased material (notably a cover of Lou Reeds' beautiful "Satellite of Love"). The packaging is a six-panel digipack redesign orchestrated by Laurence Stevens Design, the firm who art-directed all the original releases, while the thick booklets contain rare photos and insightful, new sleeve notes.

Very spotty 2nd album, though still worth owning.......2006-08-27
The album opens with the timeless "Love is a stranger". In the U.S. this was the follow up single to "Sweet Dreams", though did not make as much impact on the buying public, regardless of the fact that it was a far superior song. The dark, obsessive lyrics and heavy electronic beat gave the song a slightly Gothic feel. It's definitely the best song on the album, and with a mesmerizing video to boot!
"I've got an angel" is almost as high on my list as "Love is a stranger". Some crazy flute playing adding to Annie's haunting singing makes this another timeless classic.
"Wrap it up" is a real low point, not just for the album but for their career. Perhaps it was a carry over from their days as The Tourists, but it's only worsened by the addition of guest vocalist Green for the irritating Scritti Politti.
"I could give you a mirror" and "Somebody told me" are more high quality, slightly dark synthpop pieces that have been favorites since I first purchased the album back in 1983.
"The Walk" and "This city never sleeps" are both light and airy, pleasant enough background songs.
Another real low point is the tedious "This is the house". This was actually released as a single in the UK before stardom hit, and I can see why it went virtually unnoticed. I do not like it at all.
This new CD remaster comes with a very incomplete selection of bonus material, most from the time. "Home is where the heart is" was the B side of the 7" single "This is the house", and is a goofy little doodle that isn't bad, and even a bit fun. "Monkey monkey" is one of their forgettable, experimental instrumentals. "Baby's gone blue" was the B side of the "Sweet Dreams" 12" single, and sounds very much like an outtake from In The Garden. It's an odd little song about a dead girl, and the highlight of the bonus material.
An unfortunate absence from this reissue is the B side "Let's just close our eyes". It's an early version of "The Walk", though radically different and zombie-like.
Like the reissue of 'In The Garden', 'Sweet Dreams' comes with an excellent deluxe booklet with nice liner notes and many great period photos, though also lacks the lyrics that were printed with previous releases.
The remastering of the CD is pretty good. Like with 'In The Garden' there are occasional, minor stereo fluctuations possibly due to the age of the tapes. Though I had read that all of the original master tapes had been located at various BMG locations around the world, the song "Monkey monkey" is clearly taken from a dirty record. There was not even an attempt to mask the fact, but since I don't care for the song I'll just skip it anyway.
'Sweet Dreams' is a very spotty album after the masterpiece of In The Garden. The transition that started on this album would continue on the next album, 'Touch'.
Makes a stone-age CD sound brand new all over again!.......2006-03-09
No one can forget the experimental nature of its title track with it's famous video with Annie Lennox her gender-bending fashion style. The song itself too is awesome with it's incredible keyboard arrangements, innovative pre-techno drum beat as well as it's dramatic, dark melody. But other songs that stand out are the opening track "Love Is A Stranger", the menacing nature of "I Could Give You An Angel" and the R&B/ New Wave hybrid song that is "This Is The House" which combines the best of 1970s funk guitars with the electronic 80s New Wave sounds to create a real classic. For all the glory of the title track, it pales in comparison to what I consider the most transcendent track on here that closed out the older edition of this album entitled "This City Never Sleeps". As the previous songs in general have a more or less sunny afternoon but austere industrial atmosphere, this song has a much mellower and much darker but more pleasant evening dark mood compared to the rest of this album. The song begins with the sound of underground subway trains and becomes a very eerie, late night urban song with an ambient sound and incredible vocals by Annie. The strange melody of the song as well as the distant light guitar riffs that build in the background and increase into the foreground in sound is just amazing. The combination of this and the subway train track sound effects give the song among the best urban atmospheres of many early 1980s songs. At more than six minutes in length, "This City Never Sleeps" allows for a great amount of enjoyment that would not be possible had it been half as long. Out of all the tracks on this album, TCNS is without a doubt the best song on here, both on the old and remastered editions. As I listen to it, I am just impressed at how well it's held up over the years since it was recorded! Especially by 1983 standards, "This City Never Sleeps" is a year ahead of it's time and even ahead of songs that they did in the years the followed. Even songs that I did not mention are great as well.
The bonus tracks are mostly decent and actually add some flavor to the remastered edition that makes it much more adventurous than the old version was. Although most of them certainly are odd electronic New Wave noodlings that were odd enough to just stay in the b-side category, the six bonus tracks though are still a lot of fun to listen to even if their quality is variable. "Home Is Where The Heart" is one of the strangest songs I've ever heard from this duo. Monkey Monkey" and "Baby's Gone Blue" are decent experimental tracks but don't rank up to the rest but are still enjoyable to a degree. Included are two remixes done in 1991, one of is "Sweet Dreams" as well as "Love is a Stranger" both of which I feel do a wonderful job of giving them a whole different character. The Hot Remix of "Sweet Dreams" is darker, much heavier in mood and has a much heavier techno-drum beat, new keyboard parts as well as some haunting voice keyboard ambience to give the song a much stormier, more intense feel almost totally different from the original version. The Coldcut Remix of "Love Is A Stranger" is over 7 minutes long and has a much more of a sound that blends old school hip-hop and electronica keyboards to build the melody. Some of the `slushy' electronic sound effects as well as the amplified voice effects give the song a spookier sound but still a very flamboyant and sophisticated style to the point that had it not been for Annie's lyrics being song, would've sounded almost like a totally different song altogether. Some have criticized the inclusion of these two songs but I have to digress. I have to say that both "Sweet Dreams" and "Love is a Stranger" were redone incredibly well. The final track called "Satellite of Love" was previously unreleased until now and is now available for future generations to enjoy. The song sounds extremely dated, even by 1983 standards but is still enjoyable especially in the second half of the track. It closes this expanded edition of "Sweet Dreams".
I've always had an incredible admiration of Annie's lyric songwriting as well as her icy strength throughout her music career both with her partner Dave Steward as the Eurythmics and as a solo artist from "Diva" onwards. The remastered edition of "Sweet Dreams" is highly recommended even if you've had the original version for many years. It's that great! I never could've imagined the day that their wonderful albums would all get the treatment they deserved and "Sweet Dreams" in my opinion benefited the most from this! Highly recommended even if you already have the older edition.

Beautiful classic music that lulls you to sleep.
Baroque Music: A Prelude To Sleep.......2004-05-30
series. The theme for this one is "Baroque For Beauty Sleep" which seems to be a companion to "Baroque For Bathtime". Baroque music, especially the slower movements in many concertos, are exquisite nocturnal pieces that ease the transition from being awake to falling asleep. The beautiful, elegant, slow, graceful music of many of these pieces will definately relax you and even help you fall asleep. It's therapeutic. There are so many reasons one can buy this album. It can help you relax and soothe you, as already mentioned, and it can be played in the background of a message therapy session. It can serve as music for a romantic evening or dinner. And lastly, it hits the spot after a long day and you're ready to visit the world of dreams.
Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for lute and other Baroque period instruments, is the newest piece on the album. Respighi, a modern composer, was delving into neoclassic music and deliberately evoking the Baroque Era. It works wonderfully.
Naturally, no Baroque album is complete without Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here is the Largo from "Winter" only it is played on panpipes by the New Age artist Zamfir. The sound is hauntingly beautiful. There is a sonata for flute and harp by Bach, the biggest name in the period and Vivaldi's "L'Estro Armonico" as well as Telemann's Suite in A for Recorder. One particular piece I enjoy and think you will too is the melodic and elegant Concerto Grosso No. 12 by Handel, the slow movement Larghetto E Piano. It is sheer tonal beauty. There is more concertos by Vivaldi, whose use of the flute is always very reflective and dreamy and even a solo aria from a motet of his, the soprano Elly Ameling sings "Nulla In Mundo Pax", a lyrical-coloratura showcase which crowns and concludes this gorgeous album.

Whether used as lullaby inducing or just listening pleasure and relaxation, this is nice collection. Including wide array of instruments: strings, flute, panpipes, oboe, flute, harp, guitar, recorder, piano, and voice --- this is truly enjoyable.
There is wide array of baroque composers as well --- Rephighi, Vivaldi, Bach, Albinoini, Telemann, and more.
Great price, great variety, great addition to your CD collection.

There is a good cross sampling of various Baroque pieces and Baroque artists. The variety is the spice that makes this CD worth buying and listening to over and over again. This CD also works well on shuffle, which remakes it into a brand new album.
There are a lot of oboes and string on this disc, and being a former oboist, I am electrified as I hear that instruments mellow honk!
Guys! Don't be put off by the cover-this is a good disc. Good for the mind, heart, and soul!

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11
Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.
Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.
Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.
The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04
As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.
Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.

For calming babies, pets, and adults--TERRIFIC.......2006-01-20
I don't find the smooth transissions between pieces to be disturbing in the least. I highly recommend this to those needing
a tuneful means to relax, to those suffering cut-sleep with infants, or those with high strung animals who freak when thunder
or windy weather rocks the house!
