This is the debut CD from Singer/Songwriter Ariel Thiermann. featuring the popular Kodak Photo Show song " Into The Clouds." The arrangements on this CD are incredibly creative, layered with a full rock band, and topped in moments by violin, oboe, cello, tabla and English Horn. "My Art Is A Bird" explores the deeper questions of the heart, in songs like " Counting All The Stars" Ariel sings " Counting All The Stars, I think there's someone watching over me, when I need an angel, she comes to breathe for me," or in the haunting "Nov. 1st, 1948, Ariel asks...." I wonder what it would be like to fly, to tumble and trickle down across the sky, I wonder when I die, will I shoot like a comet down and fade into the night.." Songs like "Pencil Drawing" touch on the uncertainty of love...." floating on nothing static and space, lost in a pencil drawing, I don't want to erase..." "My Art Is A Bird" is both sensual and edgy. Here is an artist who is isn't afraid to follow her own song-writing rules, blurring the lines between what is right and wrong and taking a detour straight to the heart of the matter. This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.

Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

This sucks..........2006-03-31

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

I discovered Sibelius with this CD.......2001-03-18

I'm a big fan of Mattila and of art song. But Sibelius was mostly unfamiliar to me (except for some of his symphonies) until this disc. I especially liked the final cut, Jubal. The accompaniment here is minimalist with Mahlerian touches. Mattila sings exquisitely throughout. If you like songs by Brahms, Mahler, or Strauss, expand your knowledge horizon with this CD.

Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Music.......2000-11-17

I especially liked the songs "Var det en dröm?" and "Norden", but all of these songs are beautifully sung throughout. Karita Mattila has the perfect voice for these songs. Her voice is soft, yet strong, and the cool color is used well especially in "Norden". It is also clear that she understands every word she is singing.

This record is also a great introduction to Sibelius songs, for those who are not already familiar with them. There are also wonderful recordings of Sibelius songs by Jorma Hynninen, Tom Krause and Anne-Sofie von Otter, that I highly recommend.

Sung Like This, They Should Stay Remembered.......2005-09-30

Commenting last June on CDs featuring the tenor, Kenny Baker, I wrote that his might be the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the 20th century. My comparison included a lot of fine tenors, but I hadn't heard John Aler. Recently, I have been listening to him as Jupiter in Handel's SEMELE, then as Nadir in Bizet's PEARL FISHERS, and more recently as the soloist for this album. Kenny Baker's voice is pure, limpid, naturally musical throughout his range. The lower part of Aler's range has less music, but the upper part is richer than Baker's, and the whole is tremendously exciting. Nowhere is his voice lovelier than in the first song on this CD, "I Hear You Calling Me." Composed circa 1903, overflowing with love and longing, it became the immensely popular signature-piece in the 1920s and '30s of the Irish tenor, John McCormack. (Who, with less primitive technology, might well have provided the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the century.)

I found some of the Aler collection quite familiar, others new and highly attractive (where have they been all my life?), and others that are lifted above the ordinary more by the singer's voice and art than by intrinsic merit. The songs are predominantly art or concert songs, composed mostly in the late 19th or early 20th century. Elegant, highly romantic, often ambitious, sometimes sentimental, popular in their time with lovers of semi-classical music, and often performed in concerts by leading singers of the day. Their lyrics include the poetry of Joyce Kilmer, Robert Herrick, Rabindranath Tagore, Shelley, Poe, Yeats, Eugene Field, and Sydney Lanier.

Did Aler get the idea for this CD from the fine baritone Thomas Hampson's CD, "An Old Song Resung"? Hampson's CD (unfortunately out of print), came out in 1990; Aler's, in 1995. The songs in both collections might well have been sung to similar audiences at similar concerts by similar singers. Still, the two CDs have only two works in common: - "Do Not Go, My Love," composed by Richard Hageman in 1917, and "When I Have Sung My Songs," by Ernest Charles in 1934. Both songs are superb, and both singers do them beautifully. I would give Aler a slight edge on the first; Hampson, on the second.

This is the debut CD from Singer/Songwriter Ariel Thiermann. featuring the popular Kodak Photo Show song " Into The Clouds." "My Art Is A Bird" explores the deeper questions of the heart, in songs like " Counting All The Stars" Ariel sings " Counting All The Stars, I think there's someone watching over me, when I need an angel, she comes to breathe for me," or in the haunting "Nov. 1st, 1948, Ariel asks...." I wonder what it would be like to fly, to tumble and trickle down across the sky, I wonder when I die, will I shoot like a comet down and fade into the night.." Songs like "Pencil Drawing" touch on the uncertainty of love...." floating on nothing static and space, lost in a pencil drawing, I don't want to erase..." "My Art Is A Bird" is both sensual and edgy. Here is an artist who is isn't afraid to follow her own song-writing rules, blurring the lines between what is right and wrong and taking a detour straight to the heart of the matter. A beautiful debut album from a very talented Singer and Songwriter.

There is another recording of "Goodbye" by N.Melba on Victor 95012,released in the US in 1905.I wonder why it is not included in this "complete" Romophone release?

Just how much Nellie Melba can one take at one sitting? Judging by this set an awful lot and that is no mean achievement given the unflattering recording, and Melba's maddening habit of recording an aria again and again. Melba's singing lacks charm - judging from contemporary reports the lady could boast little of this anyway. But it has an astonishing technique, a limpid and glorious tone, and at times some indefinable but terribly moving quality. A great, great singer - in fact for my money marginally the best on record.

In a class by herself.......1999-11-23

Melba achieves perfection more often than any other singer (with the exception of Pol Plancon). Her phrases, her high notes, her ritardandi are beyond conventional emotion and beauty. There is something almost otherworldly in her best moments. In the grand Puccini arias, she seems at first too cool, too controlled. But you soon notice her supreme artistry as well as the fire, the sheer physical force just beneath the utterly smooth surface. In fact, she is sometimes more explosive, more dramatic, than the great Callas herself. And she gives so much of herself! In the Boheme arias, her generosity is perhaps most apparent. In marveling at one perfect top note after another, one almost does not realize how cohesive she can make the pieces seem, how architectural and intelligent her approach is.

Only One Melba.......1999-02-12

That was certainly Dame Nellie's assessment of herself, and she must have been something. Yes, both Peach Melba and Melba toast are named after her, and yes, she was worshipped. Even such a curmudgeon as Bernard Shaw could appreciate her greatness. Puccini praised the fact that she sang HIS music, not "Melba-Puccini." So why, then, do her recordings not reveal to us the scope of her artistry? Granted, we can marvel at the technical accomplishments (listen, for example, to the "Hamlet" mad scene, or "Sweet Bird") and occasionally catch a phrase that makes us understand what she was about, but she lacks the grandeur and opulence of Ponselle, or the tender vulnerability of Galli-Curci. It may be that Melba was, after all, an artist of the theatre, and that the cramped, primitive conditions of early recording studios simply did not inspire her to her greatest work. However, for devotees of Golden Age voices, this Romophone set is indispensible. The transfers are masterfully done, so that even those allergic to the acoustic sound of early recordings will not be bothered.
