Love Alive- Best in Gospel Music.......2004-05-05

My mother bought the 8 track tape of Love Alive when I was a kid and I fell in love with it. I was very sad when she gave it away because it was like losing a friend. Some 20 years later, the songs still are some of the finest gospel music has to offer. I have come full circle now. It just doesn't get any better than this.

Bargain value for gospel classics..........2004-11-08

The absence of reviews for titles like this clearly proves to me that Amazon does not know how to market gospel music. Here we've got 3 classic Winans CDs, really all the Winans you ever need, admittedly with no frills packaging, at an affordable price. This is quality music, the stuff that formed the foundation of my approach to gospel music along with artists like Walter Hawkins and the Gospel Music Workshop of America.

If you're at all interested in the Winans, purchase this to find out where Commissioned and all those that followed came from. A decent way backwards to this for all you new Fred Hammond fans would be to start with Fred Hammonds new album, get a Fred Hammond mix, get a Commisioned mix, and then get this album to find out where R&B inspired small group male gospel music found its clearest interpreters....

Uplifting, spectacular collection !.......2007-01-16

I have no idea how I came across the New Jersey Mass Choir in Grand Forks, N.D. around 1984. All I know is with the very first song, they were singing my heart. This compilation BLOWS me away! The talent bubbles over into the uplifting, powerful worship songs. I'm so happy it's come out in CD because that '80's cassette tape had been used to oblivion!

The perfect introduction to a great band!.......2006-03-20

This 3 disc collection features the first 2 Sixpence albums, The Fatherless and the Widow and This Beautiful Mess, and their Tickets for a Prayer Wheel EP disc.

The Good~ All the original material is included, featuring great songs such as 'Circle of Error', 'Thought Menagerie', and 'Alisha's First Steps'. This Beautiful Mess was the best of the three hands down!

The Bad~ The production quality is a way sub-par when compared to Sixpence's more recent albums. The volume of these songs varies considerably, and often times her voice is completely drowned out by the music so you can't understand the lyrics. The music is often fuzzy also. It should have been remastered or something bfore it was released.

The Ugly~ The packaging should have been better designed. The ugly lavender and gold decor just doesnt seem like it would be an eye catcher and sell the product very well. Also, some of the tracks on the Tickets for a Prayer Wheel were pretty terrible. I'm talking about the over the top instrumental 'Solomon the Mystic' and the remix (why?) of 'Love, Salvation, The Fear of Death'

So, buy this if you're a fan of Sixpence, and you don't have the first albums. Or if you're a fan of 'Kiss Me' and you want to hear what they sounded like before they became famous. I thought it was a worthy purchase, despite it's quirks. It's a good value if you think about it!

must-have popcraft........2004-05-10

There is a "City on a Hill" in pop music occupied by a few very special bands. This three disc collection is a great way to explore one of them. Most people at least know the band's mega hit "Kiss Me", which you probably either love or hate, but if you appreciate the Hardcore Pure Pop brilliance of that song you will want to hear this, because the band's early work shares that goodness (their later stuff too!). Basically, the defining features of this band, and the reasons for their pop mightiness, are Leigh Nash's lilting and sweet voice (her voice seemed to get higher, more child-like and elfin, as the band went on), and Slocum's brilliant pop guitars (and if ever you sought the secret to mastering pop guitars, I think it is to be found in SNtR's _This Beautiful Mess_). From there, all the pieces for the natural order of good songcraft fall into place. This early music is quite a bit less produced and dare I say "indie"-sounding than _Divine DIscontent_, but the production is still nice and snappy.

The real treasure here is _This Beautiful Mess_. This album has by far the greatest pop guitars I have ever heard. Matt Slocum is an unrivaled master of his craft. The entire album is decked in reams and reams of sparkly, yummy dual guitar pop goodness. "Love, Salvation, The Fear of Death", "Within a Room Somewhere", "Thought Menagerie", "Drifting"...all of these songs feature some of the most lovable guitar playing ever. At the same time, there are a few tracks where the band sounds darker and more distorted, like on the opener "Angeltread", with contemplative, starry guitar chords on the verse that cave in to a grinding, distorted chorus, and a big feedback-heavy solo section. Kinda surprising. This album also has an extremely tight pop rhythm section, with bass playing that is often dexterously, addictively dynamic rather than just following the root note.

_Fatherless and the Widow_ is also excellent, although they can be rather cloying when they get really sentimental (the end of the title track, for instance). Songs like "Fields of Flowers" and the brilliant "An Apology" give hints at the pop guitar greatness Slocum would achieve on the next album.

The _Tickets for a Prayer Wheel_ EP is pretty good, with different mixes of some songs, some non-album tracks, and covers. The techno mixes are god-awful and you should probably never listen to them (what was done to "Love, Salvation, The Fear of Death" makes me want to cry). There are a few instrumental pieces that are like little instrumental pop lullabies (great guitars, of course).

Now, the packaging for this Mega 3 Collection is pretty lame. A big ugly CD case with no information except for song titles and song publishing info is all you get. Nonetheless, it's a great deal. For the price of one album you get one of the best pop albums ever, an excellent pop album, and a few other good tracks on another cd. I'd say that's pretty good. Highly recommended, and hopefully the value is a good incentive because this music is quite delicious and you may like it.

A Good Buy.......2003-09-15

This really is a good buy. I mean...you get The Fatherless and the Widow, This Beautiful Mess, and Tickets for a Prayer Wheel, all for 15 dollars or so...or whatever. And though the CD's themselves look generic (as does the cover), the quality of the songs (sound-wise and everything) seemed great to me. I was glad to be able to listen to the older Sixpence songs. Now I have all 5 of their albums...and it's very fun and interesting to listen to how they've grown over the years, how each album has a certain atmosphere. If you are a devoted Sixpence fan, if you appreciate their thoughtful music, their lyrics, you should find this a nice package.

Sixpence-Ntr are amazing, leighs voice gets stronger in each track. This collection of songs are their finest work.
If you like good music, you will love this CD. and I suggest getting other albums of theirs.

Update those dusty albums.......2005-11-01

If you're a fan of Commissioned from WAAAAAAY back in the day, this collection is a great way to upgrade to digital on some of their early Light Records output. The entire albums of ORDINARY JUST WON'T DO, WILL YOU BE READY?, and ON THE WINNING SIDE can be found here. You won't get lyrics or complete liner notes, but for around 8-9 bucks used for all 3 it's a sacrifice you can make.

Yeah church is an establishment, but so is punk music. NO one will want to believe it but hear me out. There no denying punk is now controlled by the media. But what the media is soo good at doing is making it look like every punk loving individ is standing agaisnt the establishment. So what this creates is their own establishment controlled by media(rancid shirts are made allover, the punk look is in, ppl wanna be punk because of the media.)So now we end up with a establishment of ppl not knowing there in an establishment hating establishments. think about it your still being run. So to put down an awesome cd just because it is "promoting an establishment" makes no sense. MUSICS MUSIC just enjoy it

I dasagree that punk music is against the establishment of the christian church. It is simply music, and music is whatever you take it to be, but essentially it is nothing but a way for artists to express their feeliings. If the music is sung to the glory of God and does not blatently oppose any of his teachings, than it can do nothing but FURTHER his kingdom. If it is truly to his glory than it can be used no other way but to God's.

I personaly think this CD and ones like it are great for young poeple to listen to instead of some of the other ones out there.I know I was the type to listen to the other ones(like mm and many more)until I went to camp and one of the counselers let me hear what some of the other choses.Now I am listening to groups like mxpx,dogwood and many more.

The mega weak collection.......2007-07-09

Following Rex Carroll's departure from the group in 1993, Whitecross re-surfaced a couple of years later without him and the sound of the band's music was radically different than on the previous outings. Beginning with the abysmal ''Equilibrium'', Whitecross' music began to seriously lack the direction and feel it once had. To me, At this point in the band's career, Whitecross ceased to be metal and turned into a weak alternative band. As the only Whitecross recording that is still in print, This 3-disc collection isn't even worth the time. Filled with lackluster slow songs and tasteless mid-90's christian rock, This release should be re-titled The Mega Weak Collection. ''Equilibrium'', ''One More Encore'', And ''Unveiled'' are all here on 3 discs. Scott Wenzel's vocals are noticeably weak on a lot of these songs. The post-Rex Carrol years of Whitecross is comparable to the years Lynyrd Skynyrd played on without Ronnie Van Zandt. Worse Yet, Several songs even repeat on the one more encore section of the disc meaning that you'll hear some songs twice! The guy [I forgot his name] who replaced Rex Carroll on guitars would go on to be a future member of MercyMe. Tracy Ferrie, Who replaced the old bass player of Whitecross during the mid-90's, Currently is the replacement to Tim Gaines as the bass player of Stryper. I did however enjoy ''The Balance'' and ''Home In Heaven'', But the rest of the collection is the very worst Whitecross records ever made. Another major turn-off is the remake of ''One More Chance'', Which sounded more like an extremely weak rip-off of Audio Adrenaline and puts the far superior original to shame. People are complaining that ''Flytrap'' [The band's 1996 album] is not included on this set, But it makes no difference to me, This is one set i'll never be listening to again. My advice: Skip this collection, and Either get the way better To The limit: The Best Of Whitecross or get any Whitecross album that was made between 1987 and 1992. The self-titled debut, ''Triumphant Return'', And ''In The Kingdom''. Now, That, Would've been a true Mega 3 Collection. Hope the review helped. Be blessed.

I love Whitecross, but..........2004-01-31

What is the point of having One More Encore packaged with Unveiled and Equilibrium? With the exception of remade "No Second Chances", the songs on One More Encore come from three albums: Unveiled, Equilibrium, and Flytrap. They should have, instead, put Flytrap in this set. The buyer would only be missing out on one song. The better, and original, version of "No Second Chances" is on the out of print (and hard to find) In The Kingdom anyway.

I'm not saying don't buy this set. Unveiled and Equilibrium are great CDs. However, if you find you like the songs from Flytrap that are on One More Encore, you may find yourself forced to hunt that album down as well. For that reason, this is a very disappointing set.

these guys are great and theres nothing more to say very under rated these cd,s are alot different from the old whitecross with rex carroll on guitars but just as strong and in some places stronger this music is better than half the music they have on the market now days
