Our Kind of Soul, the follow-up to 2003's VH1-propelled Do It for Love, is mostly a can't-miss proposition: Daryl Hall's smooth, expressive voice, synonymous with the Philly soul sound, is so well suited to this material that it feels shrink-wrapped overtop. "Can't Get Enough of Your Love," the Barry White classic, is given a breezy makeover (and, maybe more impressively considering that most artists wouldn't touch it, not mangled); Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" is dusted off and tinkered with till it takes on a signature H&O sound; and "After the Dance," one of Marvin Gaye's most cryptic compositions, comes across like a solved mystery--there's a gentleness and a reverie in the reading will prompt thoughtful listeners to return to it more than a few times. That said, a couple of these covers--the O'Jays "Used to Be My Girl" and Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady"--seem cursory, and the duo can count on a cranky contingent decrying their lack of fresh material. But the strength of three songs introduced here should keep them at bay. First track "Let Love Take Control" gutsily and convincingly glides into Four Tops' "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Soul Violins" strikes notes at once heartfelt and spontaneous, and "Don't Turn Your Back" has the classic Hall & Oates marks of their-kind-of-soul songs like "Out of Touch." --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Great renditions of some soul standards.......2007-07-29

This is a great album, well sung, well produced. Good choice of songs. These guys are aging like a fine wine - just getting better and better.

5 out of 5 stars Gettin Back to the Basics.......2007-05-26

This is their best work in a long time. They recorded a lot of classic soul songs. What makes this collection so unique is they recorded them close to how the songs were originally written. They use acoustic guitars and violins. Of course they put the classic H&O style. In many cases their version is better than the original.

There are a couple of new songs on the CD also. I like those also. I notice the boys are getting back to their roots the older they get. I would give this CD a 10 out of 10. With the best song being Soul Violins. If you like soul music this is a must for your collection.

The more I listen to this CD the more I like it! There is nothing better than sweet soul music done with acoustic instruments. I started reading the cover and found the CD was recorded in 5 weeks at Daryl's home in the Bahamas!

The background vocals are amazing. I just love the way they harmonize with each other. Daryl still has his pipes and can still hit those really high notes. He does a great rendition of the Al Green classic "Still in Love".

I heard an interview with John Oates one time were he said "he brings a certain shortness to the group". I think he is selling himself short! (Ha I made a pun) His rendition of "Ooh Child" is remarkable. It's like the song was written for him.

I noticed that on many of the songs some of the lyrics and the key were changed. At first I had a problem with this, because I am used to hearing the songs done a certain way. I get it now! They took these classic R&B songs and made them Hall & Oates songs. This was done intentionally and I have to say it works.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless, Ageless, Music.......2007-05-12

When I heard #3 played on the radio, I looked everywhere for the CD. I recognized D.Hall's voice right away. This is MUSIC,timeless, ageless talent and style. Thank you AMAZON.com and Thanks to Hall and Oates.

5 out of 5 stars Daryl Still knows what Soul is all about. .......2007-04-25

Hall and Oats were one of the only Blue Eye Soul groups I believed understood what soul is about. Over the years I haven't heard much from them. I just happen to catch the concert on tv, it looked like it was at some big bar in the suburbs at first. But I understand it was in the Bahama's.
I was very delighted to hear that Daryl Hall still can sing. The songs were not songs from their music but covers of various R&B songs from people such as Gladys Knght and the O'Jays and the Four Tops. and one or two newer original songs. Whoever said their version of the O'Jays, She Use to Be My Girl was the worst song he ever heard must not of listened to any of the 10,000 cd's he has. It was fine, I get nervous when people sing covers of great R&B songs. Most do it pretty horrendously. Not Daryl Hall even 34 years later the man can still sing and he does a very good job singing that song. Surprisingly he took on sacred cows like Neither One of Us, by Gladys Knight and he was excellent. He did not try to over sing Gladys, he made the song his own. He sang Rock Steady like he has been singing it all of his life.
Same with Marvin Gaye's song.
Again I will say Hall and Oates were the only Blue Eye Soul group particulary Daryl Hall who knows what soul is about and that is why they were able to tackle songs most singers would sound foolish singing. This CD proves it.

1 out of 5 stars 'Used ta be my girl' gets my vote for worst song of all time!.......2007-03-13

I consider myself a music expert or something close to it. I own close to 10,000 albums. I say this because I hope that you will listen to some very good advice. Do not buy this album. Do not borrow it from the library. If you see it in the record store, look away as fast as you can. 'She used to be my girl' is the WORST song I have ever heard. That is taking into consideration all of the generic bubblegum pop, 80's hair metal, disco, and rock blands that I have had the misfortune to hear. To describe it as infinitely dreadful would be giving it too much credit. 'The O'Jays' should be ashamed and embarrassed that they are responsible for this miserable catastrophe of a 'song.' Daryl Hall & John Oates simply take 'worst' to a whole new low. Absolutely horrible! Hearing this song is like being forced to eat cow dung while suspended by your toe nails above a steaming pit of molten lead. Please, do not buy this album! (Rating: No stars whatsoever!)

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

3 out of 5 stars DON'T buy this if you want to listen to it on your computer.......2006-03-28

I enjoy Chris' music quite a bit. I won't pretend to be a music critic but his music is simply excellent.

But there's a problem with this CD. When I try to listen to it on my computer, it launches a music video that takes over my screen entirely. You can't listen to the normal songs on the CD. If you try to go back to the work that you were doing before you put the CD in the drive, then the Chris Rice video stops.

That's right, you have no choice but stopping whatever work you were doing and watching the Chris Rice video. You can't just listen to the music while you do your work.

Maybe this is some kind of reaction to copyright infringement. I think it's a shame. I'd be surprised if it were Chris' idea.

But when I listen to it in my car or living room stereo, it's a great CD ! I do wish that Chris would put more new songs on each CD though. Many of these are repeats.

3 out of 5 stars Come to Jesus.......2005-05-08

"Untitled hymn (Come to Jesus)" is a great song!
Get a taste of the album 'Run the earth...watch the sky' by Chris Rice by hearing about the songs.

Other side of the radio: I don't really like this song much. It's okay though. 1/5
Everything's OK: This song is really encouraging. a nice, upbeat feel to it 3/5
Nonny Nonny: Not so upbeat. Seems softer. Pretty good 3/5
Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus): This is a really good song. I love it so much. it is probably the best song on the album. I love it! 5/5
Smile: This radio single is really good. It's not really a ballad, though it's not that upbeat. It's abotut he longing for Heaven 2/5
8th Grade: An upbeat kind of song. Cool for driving to :-) Good 2/5
My Catherdral: I like the lyrics. It is a nice song. accoustic guitar driven. The echoeing is a nice touch, it makes him sound like he's in a catherdal! A nice tale of his past. I like the strings 3/5
Me and Becky: This is one of the best songs on the album. An upbeat tune. 4/5
Wonder: One of the not so great songs on the album, though it's not that bad. 1 1/2 /5 (That says one and a half out of five)
Spare an angel: A nice song. quiter. Chris goes a bit too high in this song..sort of. it's nice. 3/5
Circle Up:I think it's pretty good. Not really a ballad, not really upbeat. It's great. 3/5

5 out of 5 stars From Opposite Sides of the Universe.......2005-02-16

"Run the Earth, Watch the Sky" is an exquisite set of pop tunes about faith and God. On most CDs, if there are 2 or 3 songs I really like, it's successful. On this disc, there are 6! "Wonder" is a joyful pop nugget with Chris' expressive baritone gently caressing the lyric, "Shall we dance from opposite sides of the universe? And we'll shine the glory behind all our spins & turns as we orbit our way through the sky." What a lovely picturing of man reaching for God and God for man! "My Cathedral" is a sweet acoustic melody about the joys of worshipping outdoors, "Here beneath the blue skies, I ran down to be baptized." "Circle Up" is a sweet melody with a delightful vision of men & angels all joined in worship, "Great & small, angels all & seraphim, grab a hand, twirl a dance, circle up & worship him!" It's a delightful track. "Untitled Hymn" is a comforting melody that starts simple with piano before the strings come in as the song builds from loneliness to joy. "Spare an Angel" is a song that touches a deep chord for those whose hearts are troubled and no human comfort seems to satisfy. It's an elegant statement of compassion. "Me & Becky" is such a perky track that it makes me think it ought to be a TV theme song. While I've cited my favorites, none of the other tracks are weak. This set by Chris Rice is extremely strong with a positive delightful vision. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2004-04-11

As usual, Chris Rice doesn't disappoint you. My family and I have enjoyed all his prior releases and this one is up there with the rest. This one in particular brings to mind a fond recollection of my childhood and my family.

5 out of 5 stars I get everything by both Genie and Chris.......2004-04-07

I got into Chris Rice's music with his former label-mate Genie. Saw them both signing autographs at a show.

I love both Genie and Chris Rice, but I have to admit that my all-time favorite CD is Genie's Higher Than The Heavens CD - I got that one with her awesome Amazon deal 4 CD set for under 30 clams!

I get everything by both Genie and Chris, and this Chris CD is really great. He and Genie are both so humble and it shows through in their voices.

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Hip-Hop Classic !.......2006-12-14

each track from start to finish....AWESOME! even though i'm a female every now and then i got to have some "grit" in my music collection.

"Easy On The Cut....No Mistakes Allowed."

5 out of 5 stars The hardest of his albums.......2006-07-27

The first album contains a couple of thought provoking and good sounding tracks, this one adds to the lot.
Aside of his very old school stuff, I'd stick with this and the 1st album, forget the rest of his collection.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Gansta Hip-Hop.......2006-02-03

Even though today Ice-T has pretty much left the music bizz, and is doing TV and Movies, lets not forget what he contributed to the Hip-Hip community back in the day. Ice-T might have been one of the first ganster artist (his first release Ryhme Pays was released a year before NWA's Straight Outta Compton. Out of all his releases this might be his best effort. Sure there are some filler tracks here, yet the other songs are so good and powerful, that they make up for the bad songs on this. You played yourself and The Peel their caps back are my personal favorites on this, and anyone looking for great Ganasta rap, should ditch thier 50 Cent CD's and pick this one up. Even though Ice-T has made it into the mainstream, I dont believe he sold out. He started out back in the day as a nobody, and as he got older he made some career moves that would get him into Movies and TV. You can't be making Ganster Material forever, as it just wouldnt sound right for 40+ yr old man to be rapping about guns and pimping (would it) He does, however still do some musical work, and his love for hardcore and Metal Music still show as he did a guest appearence on Six Feet Unders "True Carnage" in 2001. Enjoy this piece of hip-hop History.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Gangsta Political Album.......2005-08-05

This is the album that made me love Ice T as a rapper. Like PE this album has political agendas along with Ice T's gangsta story telling. The Intro features vocals from the lead singer of the Dead Kennedys which is a cool collabaration. There's even a rock song that predates Ice's Body Count days. Favorites include Iceberg, Lethal Weapon, You Played Yourself, Peel Their Caps Back, Girl Tried to Kill Me, This One's for Me, Hunted Child, and Freedom of Speech. Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars 1st amendment fueled gangster rap.......2004-09-27

Instead of focusing completely on his regular brand of gangster rap, Ice-T focuses mostly on 1st amendment issues, mainly the freedom of speech on his riveting 3rd album. Ice-T's main concern is the widespread attack on censorship in the U.S.. He delivers clear and conscious songwriting that is sure to make you pine over the issues he lays out, conveying a message that the American government dominates and controls every part of the citizen's lives.

Ice-T throws down some of his best work ever on this record. Some standouts include the brilliant stretch of tracks 4-8. "You Played Yourself", the chilling "Peel Their Caps Back", the funny and hard rockin' "The Girl Tried to Kill Me", the very disturbing skit "Black 'N' Decker" and the turntable induced "Hit the Deck". Other standouts include "Lethal Weapon" and "My Word Is Bond".

This is probably the best Ice-T album behind Original Gangster. The Iceberg includes some of Ice-T's most memorable moments ever captured. It is a must have for any fan of Ice-T or old school rap and hip-hop.

There have been so many great recordings of all of the important masterpieces that critics and listeners are often justified in thinking that there's no point in recording them yet again. Then along comes a recording like this one, which revives one's faith in the future of classical music. Gil Shaham is competing with classic performances by Isaac Stern in the Barber, and Jascha Heifetz in the Korngold. And he's as good as either of them, not to mention far more impressively recorded. In particular, the Korngold Concerto--a masterpiece just now coming into its own--has never sounded so resplendent. What a great disc! --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Fan of Classical String Music.......2007-07-22

Since I am somewhat clumsy and rather slow with this computer, I was delighted to:
1- Find on Amazon Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto.
2-The price was ok.
3- To place an order for the CD and it was delivered within 5 days.
4-Note that no local retail outlets sell classical music. I would burn several gallons of gasoline to find a store. Probably if I got there, the CD would not be available.
5-The quality of Gil Shaham's treatment on the violin of Barber's concerto was first class.
6-I recommend this disc. I make no claim to being a music critic.

3 out of 5 stars great performance, substandard recording.......2006-10-15

While I would agree with the other reviewers that this performance is excellent, there are definitely some issues with it. Let me preface this with that I am a classical sound engineer, and have much experience with this repertoire in the recording environment.

To begin, there are some real dynamics problems with this recording. Its as if the orchestra was recorded using overzealous compression while the soloist was placed front and center with artificially exaggerated levels. I am sure the other reviewers would have to admit that Mr. Shaham was placed way to forward in this recording. His violin sounds enormous!

Second, and this is very curious considering this was a studio recording, Mr Shaham's violin begins to go out of tune in the second movement. It is only the lower strings, but it is very evident to my ears-this resolves itself as the music climbs higher, but I am shocked that no one stopped the recording session to address this.

I will say that the performance is excellent, particularly the conducting, as the dynamics in the score, especially at the end of the second movement, are very well articulated by Mr. Previn. While Mr. Shaham is excellent, I feel the emotions of this piece, for whatever reason, are better served by a female player. I have seen Hilary Hahn perform this piece live, and I believe she understands the intentions of Barber to the letter.

All in all, a very good effort by the performers, a seriously questionable effort by the recording company and especially those overseeing this recording session.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Gil Shaham's Best Concerti Recordings.......2004-02-15

Without question this is one of Gil Shaham's best recordings of violin concerti. Historically it may be the most important since he makes a very persuasive case for including Korngold's violin concerto as part of the standard repertoire of stellar solo violinists of which he is unquestionably one. Both violin concerti are among the most lyrical ever composed, and Shaham brings both immaculate technical skills and soulful, graceful playing in his highly commendable performances of both work. Andre Previn leads the London Symphony Orchestra in superb performances of the orchestral scores. However, the real treasure on this recording has to be Previn's duet with Shaham in the Korngold score that concludes this CD. It's some of the most inspirational playing of 20th Century music by a violinist and pianist I have heard. The sound quality is absolutely first rate.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music.....Excellent performance............2003-12-28

This is the third cd that I had a chance to feel Barber's sentimental music...First was the Adagio for Strings..second was the songs of Barber and the last one the violin concerto...the cd that follows the other always made my love stronger for the Barber's music...But this violin concerto has a different place in my heart...it is a modern era music but you feel it like you are listening a late romantic era composer's music...the work is based on Lyricism and virtuosity...music is wonderful especially in the second movement...and I offer you to listen carefully the 1st movement's 3rd minute's 31st second...a bow pulled with a lot of sentiment...he is not pulling it with his hand...he is doing it with his heart...Gil Shaham is a very talented young violinist...technique is perfect...he plays so clean...no dirty notes heard...and his feeling adds more to his perfect performing...There is not too much to say about the orchestra and the conductor...I think you know about them...If you don't??? meet them in this performance...
even if you are not a fan of Barber or you are not into his music this Cd is highly reccomended...

5 out of 5 stars Barber/Korngold - Shaham/Previn, REALLY GOOD!.......2003-09-05

Yes, FIVE-STARS but I warmed up to this album slowly. I knew I liked SOME of Barber's music but I had to listen to the violin concerto several times before I really heard it. THEN, I realized it is such a wonderful work, played uncommonly well. The Korngold concerto is VERY inventive, as well. However, the work that just KNOCKED ME OVER was the "Much Ado About Nothing" suite by Korngold. The combination of some of the loveliest composing EVER with Previn's dead-on accompanying and Shaham's uncanny genius was SOOOOO satisfying. You won't EVER hear anything more lovely than that "In the Garden" section. Because of the composers but also because of the musicians, I think a music-lover would LOVE and even ADORE this CD!

Pure Gershwin was Michael Feinstein's first album, and it remains one of his best. It may not have the production values of his later Gershwin tributes, Nice Work if You Can Get It (1996) and Michael & George (1998), but it simply and directly presents Feinstein in his piano-bar days, singing to his own tasteful accompaniments with occasional contributions from bass and drums and a second piano. Establishing the patterns for his later albums, he sings unjustly neglected verses to familiar songs, uncovers some never-before-recorded gems ("The World Is Mine," "What Causes That"), and provides song-by-song notes. 5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD.......2005-05-19

PURE GERSHWIN is just that, pure!. Feinstein interprets Gershwin the way it was meant to be performed. This is pure delight!

4 out of 5 stars Quiet and elegant.......2003-04-20

Michael Feinstein's thin voice is compensated by his apparent enthusiasm for the material and a spare arrangement of piano, bass, and drum that gives this recording the ambiance of an intimate piano bar. Before hearing this disc, I knew only Gershwin's biggest hits, so many of the numbers here were new to me and increase my appreciation of that great American composer.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-04-10

I bought this cd because I am a huge Gershwin enthusiast and am always on the lookout for versions of one of my favorite pieces, "Liza". I'd heard a lot of buzz about Feinstein and the supposed wonderfulness of his Gershwin interpretations, so I thought I would give this album a shot.

I was extremely disappointed. Feinstein seems to suck the life out of Gershwin's compositions, a feat I would have previously thought impossible. Though I concede that vocalists are free to reinterpret songs (many to a great success, as in Louis Armstrong's and Ella Fitzgerals's enjoyable versions of Gershwin), I think Feinstein's lazy tempos "loungy" voice make the tracks on this album boring and annoying.

I have loved to listen to and sing these songs my entire life. I just wanted to warn listeners who perhaps, like myself, enjoy George Gershwin's music for its beautiful clarity and energy (as easily experienced through Gershwin's own recordings, early interpretations by artists such as the Astaires, and even recent broadway "Crazy For You") that they will not experience any feeling of the sort from Michael Feinstein.

Amidst all the gushing that has recently been done over him, I found Michael Feinstein to have attempted to murder "Liza" and the other songs on this album. He merely displays a very unexceptional voice and poor interpretive taste. Fans beware, Feinstein proves that it is possible to make a bad cd of Gershwin songs. I'd recommend listening elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars they can't take that album away from me.......2002-05-09

they say the third time's a charm, but in this instance, it is the first time -- michael feinstein's first gershwin album -- that is the charm. this album is by far better and more listenable than the next two -- "feinstein sings gershwin" and "nice work if you can get it".

the listenability of this album may stem from the fact that it is a bare-bones arrangement, with two pianos, a bass and drums, a la a jazz trio, with no embellishment, so michael feinstein's then sincere and unsophisticated voice is the featured instrument.

i heartily recommend this album, as every song on it is a gem and feinstein's voice is more appealing than on the two later albums, when he jazzed it up with what sounds like an echo chamber and other electronic enhancements and he seems to be doing the songs by the numbers.

feinstein's version of "liza," slowed down to ballad form and plaintively phrased, is the best i have ever heard. the duet with rosemary clooney on "isn't it a pity," again brings out the best of feinstein's then-new voice and shows why george's (clooney) aunt is rightfully considered a jazz legend.

the combined "he loves and she loves/how long has this been going on" is another melodic/poignant highlight, while the album's finale, "someone to watch over me," is a stirring anthem to wanting and needing someone and is done with vocal and instrumental passion; it brings this collection of songs to a fitting crescendo.

for a lawyer's kid from columbus, ohio who started out cataloguing gershwin estate material for the reclusive ira and then began singing the songs for family and friends, michael feinstein has done all right for himself. he has become the recognized interpreter of the gershwin legacy, sort of the same way his pseudo-cousin, john, jr. feinstein, has become the recognized interpreter of the bob knight legacy... .

michael feinstein may have hit a home run his first time up with this album, and it may be his best, as it is the purest and most joyful celebration of gershwin tunes, while the others are fancier, more jazzed up and ponderous and less appealing.

the other albums are certainly not bad, though, and i recommend buying them to fill out a feinstein or gershwin collection, but this one is by far the best one to get if you are only going to get one as a sample of either's work. it is nice work, and you can get it.

Houston-born blues showman Guitar Shorty, who once taught his young brother-in-law Jimi Hendrix a few stage tricks, has been on the scene since 1957, blasting out rocking blues with over-the-top enthusiasm. His recording career, highlighted by a trio of fine Black Top releases in the '90s, has been unfortunately limited, but Watch Your Back might finally put him in the spotlight. Much of the material, except for muscular reworkings of Van Morrison's "I've Been Working" and the recently discofied Elvis hit "A Little Less Conversation," comes from his producer and pianist Jesse Harms, and it effectively showcases Shorty's aggressive approach: a big sound short on subtlety but permeated with passionate vocals and searing guitar work. He simply overpowers the songs with his energy, and you can either go with the flow or get swept aside by its immediacy. The music is uniformly loud and in your face, just as you would expect from such an extroverted entertainer, and, more often than not, its sheer intensity overcomes any musical shortcomings. --Michael Point

5 out of 5 stars Best Guitar Shorty disc by far.......2007-05-14

I've been a Guitar Shorty fan for more than 10 years, having seen him at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, AZ several times. I own all of his previous CDs and this one is definitely a cut above. Shorty has become at least partially "big time" and that's a double-edged sword for me: fewer and fewer appearances at the Rhythm Room, but the best-produced discs he's ever done. I'm happy to know he's made it, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Shaq takes his blues reviewing, very seriously, and I believe the fan base that is growing for my reviews, wants accurate opinions. I want my readers to know that if Shaq, "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", gives a five, it is really a five! This CD is a 4. That means you should buy it. But it is not a 5 like some of Shaq's other reviews, i.e.: "In Session", "Blues Deluxe", etc. Shorty, is a blues man at heart, and puts all of himself into his music. His voice is not his greatest attribute, but he has great humor, if you listen to his lyrics on this and his other CD's. (Which Shaq already owns, but hasn't had time to review for you yet.) As blues CD's go, most of these are shorter songs, and are in the 3 min 12 second to a long of 5 min 45 seconds. I wouldn't call Shorty's songs on this CD true blues; I'd call it kind of a rock/blues. This is a fun CD, and if you think #9 sounds familiar, it should. It was originally recorded by Elvis Presley (A Little Less Conversation), and is now the theme song for the hit TV show "Las Vegas". Only Shaq gives you all these interesting details along with his reviews! Hoo! Haa!

5 out of 5 stars Should have bought this much sooner.......2006-07-10

I generaly stay away from releases that ride on someones fame from a bygone era. Age diminishes their skills and a lot of the releases are done purely from memory. How wrong could I be. This man could be in his 20's / 30's or 40's.....whatever,and he would still be a brilliant blues man. Awesome guitar tone and phrasing that does not originate in the 50's, but is as fresh as the best of the young guns. Sensational material and lyrics that take a humorous and insightful look at life. If you are into the guitar or the blues, don't hesitate - 5 stars all the way.

If the American pop culture profile of French composer-jazz pianist Michel Legrand doesn't seem what it once was, don't be misled: his European indie film scores continue six decades on, now numbering nearly 200. But Legrand's most beloved work remains the lovely, evocative themes he created in the '60s and '70s, including "I Will Wait for You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair's "Windmills of Your Mind," the theme from Summer of '42, and his work on Barbra Streisand's Yentl. This collection marks Legrand's first solo piano recordings, presenting those and other film score highlights in spontaneously improvised performances that offer a glimpse of Legrand's musical soul. If, as in "Windmills," his enthusiasm gets the best of him and he occasionally lapses into flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody, there are more than enough sublime moments here to compensate, especially on lesser-known songs like Best Friends' "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" from The Happy Ending, and Brian's Song's "Hands of Time." --Jerry McCulley

Sunlight on his fingertips

The very bright talent of Michele Legrand you can feel especially when Maestro is playing piano himself.

I heard some orchestra performance of Legrand before, that was good, but I was still thinking about him just like about pop music composer.

Now I think different - he is Genius!

5 out of 5 stars all the stars you've got.......2005-01-29

Bill Evans once said that technique in jazz "is the ability to translate your ideas into sound through your instrument." If that's the case, Legrand possesses technique in spades.

Before commenting on this rewarding disc, a few words about Legrand himself:

Is there a better songwriter or a more versatile all-around musican alive today? I think you have to go back to people like Gershwin and Billy Strayhorn to find a rough parallel to Legrand's multifaceted, genre-crossing genius. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger (who studied with Faure and taught many important American composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass), Legrand is an heir of the great French tradition of music--but one who has chosen to express himself through popular songs, film scores, and jazz. He possesses that rare combination of an absolutely rigorous theoretical knowledge of music and an intuitive, spontaneous instinct for both melody and improvisation. He combines exquisite refinement with a popular touch, a need to communicate directly with all who love music. To me, his work represents the most perfect expression of such typically French traits as lightness, insouciance, wit, melodic charm, and direct emotional expression since Poulenc.

Here you'll find many of Legrand's signature songs--"I Will Wait for You," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," "The Hands of Time," "You Must Believe in Spring," etc.--reharmonized and enriched in stunningly beautiful solo recreations. Those unfamiliar with Legrand's pianistic abilities will probably be surprised by what they hear, for he's no part-time piano tickler. He can easily hold his own in the company of the best modern jazz pianists. He has a wonderfully refined touch that is incapable of making a harsh sound and a profusive sense of fantasy that keeps you constantly guessing as to where the music will go next. Yet you always feel satisfied when you find out, because Legrand possesses a composer's comprehension of harmony and form. And his own style is in no way compromised by an occasional nod here and there toward Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, Rachmaninoff, and so on. (Please: disregard the Amazon reviewer's remark about "flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody." It's called a stride chorus, and it's just one example of Legrand's surprising way of recasting these songs--and of his encyclopedic command of jazz styles.)

This disc represents the essence of Legrand. It really should have been recorded a long time ago, but the fact that it has captured his undiminished abilities as he enters his twilight years lends it an added poignance--a sense of "just in time!"--that makes it all the sweeter. If you're already a Legrand fan, it should be a self-recommending treasure, and if you're a fan of great piano playing or of sophisticated jazz treatments of great songs, odds are you'll find this a very rewarding disc indeed. For me, the highlight is this version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" in which every note seems inevitable--not at all an easy thing to make happen in an improvisation.

Miles Davis once said of a Duke Ellington recording, "Give that one all the stars you've got." That's the way I feel about this disc, and I thought that phrase "all the stars you've got" was appropriate because it almost sounds like the title of a Legrand song.

5 out of 5 stars Maestro Legrand , at last !.......2004-10-10

Legrand has recorded at last one of his more intimate renditions to himself with his most remarkable themes along his brilliant career .
From a summer of 42 , The windmills of your mind (The Thomas crown afair) , what are you doing the rest of your life or the romantic Umbrellas of Cherbourg ; all those unforgettable themes are played in this album for piano solo in the real intimacy between him and the listener .
Legrand is the golden master of soundtracks in France and one of the top in the world . He owns that inner vision to catch the spirit of every movie he accompains . He composes music as he was a real director movie . The psychological concerns , the romantic efluvies and the precise and lyrical atmosphere , with that touch of class, artistic elegance and sublime eloquency .
Think also in the important recordings with Miles Davis . That issue will give you the size of that artist and anothe point to remark . In 1954 , Legrand made a golden jewel : I lvoe Paris (See my review) that has become through the years in the most famous and the best album of instrumental music ever recorded .
What other background do you need to acquire this gem ?

4 out of 5 stars For Jazz piano purest... Only!.......2002-09-07

I love the music of Michele Legrand! It is a rich mixture of
graceful tones and notes, that create memories of a certain
time and place in each of our own lives.
When accompaned with great orchestration Its wonderful. When done in a jazz piano style, its not as good. Not to take anyting away from the talents of Mr Legrand as a pianist. Its just that like hearing a lusher, grander version of his music. So if you like jazz piano music, and Michele Legrand.
Then this is the cd for you!

VH-1's Behind the Music may signify the final curtain for some acts, but Hall and Oates aren't so easily confined to the dustbins of pop history. With a chart run that spanned most of the '70s and '80s, Philadelphia's most enduring purveyors of blue-eyed soul went on to keep a fairly low profile until "Do It for Love," a newly recorded track for their 2002 VH-1 retrospective, crept up to the top of the adult contemporary charts. Nearly a year later, the duo reprises the track and title on a full album that aims to recapture the best aspects of their glory days. Among its highlights are a sublime cover of New Radical's "Someday We'll Know" that teams them up with War Babies collaborator Todd Rundgren, and the funky "Miss DJ," a playful pop confection that avoids the excessive novelty of their more calculated '80s hits. After three decades, Hall's remains one of pop's most expressive voices. And while the album as a whole may lack the edge and energy of the pair's earliest work, it's still a promising collection from a rock duo that's earned a place in Philly soul history. --Bill Forman

4 out of 5 stars Hard to beat their mid-eighties albums, but this comes close.......2007-07-31

A friend of mine worked as a roadie for H&O through the Eighties. A tough white guy from Dorchester, Mass., he always said they had an ability to cross over all kinds of boundaries. And he said they were both great guys in person, too--a rarity for bands back then. Both he and I and our friends from Roxbury all listened to H&O at the restaurant we worked at--along with Ice Cube and Run DMC of course. Great to see the boyz back touring. You absolutely cannot beat a live H&O show, especially now with a string section! I regret missing their July 4 show in Philly, which I hear was fantastic despite the rain.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy.......2006-04-30

Hard to believe that this CD is just as good as their many hit albums from the 1980s. Their ability to create hooks, songs you can't get out of your head, is at their absolute best. If you are an H&O fan, or if you just want great pop music to listen to - over and over - I can't recommend this highly enough. If only it could airplay instead of the junk you hear today on the radio!

5 out of 5 stars H & O still groovin' -- wow!.......2005-08-16

More than 100 reviews here, almost all five or four stars, what does that tell you?! Simply that Hall & Oates are still just a great group. The blend of their voices, the instrumentation, the songwriting -- it's all here. This is as good of album they've ever made, and they've made some legendary ones.

This is an epic CD -- and I just picked it up at the library and need to buy it this week. It truly is wonderful. Favorites include "Man On A Mission," the title track, and "Heartbreak Time."

Wow! Thanks H & O for keeping your music alive. Please, don't take so long between albums next time.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITES!.......2005-03-12

I'm a big Hall and Oates fan and I recommend this selection. Not only is Do It For Love a contagious hit that you'l want to play over and over again, but this CD is full of other terrific tracks as well. My second favorite off this CD would be Man On A Mission. Daryl Hall is one of the smoothest vocalist of all time, half of the most popular duo in recording history...so what else would you expect from this talented pair!

5 out of 5 stars Get this album and "Do it for Love".......2004-11-13

I have been following Daryl and Johns music since the late 70's and they seem to be like fine wine. They get better and better with age! I should know! I have even met them in person! This album is definately a hit! As I proceeded to pick up this album the day it went on sale I did not know how much of a good thing I was going to get. Man was I pleased when I found out all 14 tracks are great hits in themselves. I would elaborate on all of them, but just the title one "Do it for Love". It is definately a Hall and Oates song! The vocals of Daryl just make the song come alive as if your actually living the song. Daryl is THAT good! Johns background vocals as well as the blend of the vocals of Tom "T-Bone" Wolk, Charlie "Mr. Casual" DeChant and the rest of the band really make this song a hit! On one final note, I am engaged to be married. My fiancee and I both agreed that this will be 'our' song at our wedding. Thats how good this song is and the album is just as good!

5 out of 5 stars Great representation of music from a great singer.......2007-01-07

A terrific album by a great singer. This album represents the considerable territory that Kiri Te Kanawa covers in here repertoire. She moves easily from Handel to Puccini to Jerome Kern. The insertion of classic show tunes as a part of this CD is a nice little plus. Some opera stars absolutely kill popular music by overwhelming it with operatic technique (listen to Richard Tucker singing "What now my love"; this is a pleasant little tune, but it can't stand up to Tucker's voice of steel, using all the power at his command). Te Kanawa sings these songs, for the most part, nicely and does not overpower them with operatic conventions.

She does a wonderful job on Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," displaying good coloratura technique, as a matter of fact. This cut nicely illustrates the clean sound of her voice. Her version of "Dove sono" (from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro) is a reflective rendering of this aria. The smoothness of her vocal line is wonderful to hear. Her version of "Vissi d'arte" (from Puccini's Tosca) also illustrates the art of Dame Kiri.

The popular tunes that follow are very interesting. She and Jose Carreras, at the outset, begin to overwhelm "Tonight" (from "West Side Story," with--by the way--Leonard Bernstein himself conducting this cut), making it appear that this might be one of those dismal pieces where opera singers wreck songs. However, shortly thereafter, the song becomes more Broadway than Metropolitan Opera, and that is to the good. Better still are Te Kanawa's versions of classic songs such as "Summertime" (from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess), where singing in a higher register works nicely and where she treats the song on its own terms; just so, Jerome Kern's "Smoke gets in your eyes" is sung so well. It is a poignant version of this song.

All in all, for those who are curious about Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, this is one interesting entrée. Well worth acquiring and listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice, great collection.......2005-11-21

I think Kiri has a beuatiful voice, she is never overtly dramatic, but the people who call her the "church soprano" should hear this album. She can sing sacred music better than many other opera stars, but she is so great as Countess in Mozart's Figaro. This is a great collection of many different pieces, from operas, sacred works, musicals, all sung with lots of feeling. Let The Bright Seraphim is the aria she sang at the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, it is such a splendid performance. My favourite piece on this album is probably Mozart's Laudate Dominum, but there are no disappointing songs here. Her voice is so warm, and she really gets involved with the text. If you are a big fan of Kiri, you should get this collection, it is such a nice selection of her greatest hits, and it is a very good introduction for new fans.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2005-02-20

I admit straightout to know nothing of opera - the cd is my first of its kind. Knowledge, however, is not required to enjoy this cd, only the ability to listen and feel.

Hearing her voice used as an instrument so beautifully I cannot but fall a little in love with her whenever listening to it.

The selection of tracks is varied; I probably prefer the classical tracks, but all are well performed in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Kiri Te Kanawa Is Peerless.......2004-07-11

She looks and sounds so beautiful. The first time I ever heard the inimitable voice of Kiri Te Kanawa was on a recording of Salaambo's aria from CITIZEN KANE for the RCA film classics series on vinyl. It was one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever composed by Bernard Herrmann. It was Kiri Te Kanawa performance of this piece that was so incredible. I had seen the film several times, but to hear a high fidelity recording of Kiri Te Kanawa on this particular piece really demonstrated not only the raw talent but also a depth of intuitive emotion that she brought to Herrmann's composition. Anyone that could interpret the inner struggle behind Herrmann's music so precisely demonstrated an uncommon ability to become one with the music. Her performance of "Ave Maria" on this CD is referent and exquisite. I love Leonard Bernstein's piece from WEST SIDE STORY that Kiri performs so vibrantly with Jose Carreras. I still can't pronounce her entire name correctly but Kiri Te Kanawa is the epitome of a well-honed talent. The selections on this CD are appreciably diverse demonstrating her phenomenal range and abilities. Kiri Te Kanawa has been and still is a gift to us all. This CD is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars I stood up also!!.......2003-07-31

Yes, Kiri at 59 is something special indeed. The great moment for me in Edinburgh was Reynaldo Hahn's à Chloris - I always thought Susan Graham owned this song, but Kiri's version from that moment on was the one I will always remember.

Do catch her & the wonderful Julian Reynolds with a similar program at the Royal Festival Hall on november 24th. If you have any money left buy this album from amazon.com. Great cover!
