5 out of 5 stars First EP from this Austin, Texas band makes with the happy.......2007-04-27

Tired of dark, heavy indie rock about brakeups and breakdowns? "Raised by Wolves" is the perfect alternative for you. This 5 song EP makes with the happy without ever losing a beat. The title track sets the tone with it's fast drum beat and jangly guitar. Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist, Ramesh Srivasta knows how to write hooks and melodies guaranteed to keep you humming for days, and his lyrics, though often about brakeups and breakdowns are uplifting and confident. While they have garnered many comparisons to '80's acts like the Smiths (most probably because the second track, The Start of Something, sounds like it could easily be a Smith's B-side) more recent releases have shown Voxtrot are exploring and creating their own sound. This is an excellent introduction to a band that will soon be getting national attention. Finally, if you get a chance to see them live, don't miss it. I was fortunate enough to catch them at a small club, a day after they opened for Elefant in San Francisco. They were brilliant and did an incredible cover of "Love Vigilantes" by New Order.

5 out of 5 stars my new addiction.......2006-06-09

i saw this band open for elefant. they were actually better than elefant. their energy is so apparent on stage not to mention in their songs. all the songs are amazing and different and upbeat with wondrous and witty lyrics. they are reminiscent of the smiths, belle & sebastian and new order, amongst other great bands. i haven't been taken with a band like this in 5 years. they are definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Shake your booty and hold your mama's hand!.......2006-04-30

This band is band of the new century for me! Great, catchy, fun, HAPPY; if you like good feeling smiths, cure etc you'll probably like these guys. I'm into new 80s stuff like the killers, bravery, hot hot heat, editors, etc... but I really, absolutely, positively LOVE these guys's style!!!!!! It's a change from the dark dancy, but you still wanna get down! If they combined their last two cds, it would have made for a great album!!!! Have a listen; i promise, you wont be sad.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Me Smile........2006-03-19

I absolutely love this stuff. The Start of Something and Raised by Wolves are so uplifting that it even makes me want get up and dance, and not a whole lot of music can do that. It's just so catchy. Also there are some slower songs like Long Haul and Wrecking Force that are interesting. I think this band has the potential to become the next big thing, but still, that might take away some of their charm if they were to be superstars, I think they are better off being themselves.

5 out of 5 stars this thing is great.......2006-03-17

ok, so i'm not actually a kid, i just had to click it because i don't have an account and whatnot. yes.
so, this band is phenomenal. i got the first song through the indiefeed alternative/modern rock channel and was hooked instantly. i bought the song 'raised by wolves' on itunes and still couldn't believe they were so incredible. they are! like everyone else, i wish they would come out with a full lenght, but no. however, there is another ep coming out on april 4th!!! get ready! if you like good music, get this! seriously!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite.......2005-09-06

The songs are all nice, but that's it. Nice. Kind of like the Partridge Family. No surprises. Basic harmonies. Check out Jason Falkner or Matthew Sweet for something with more substance(chord and structure).

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Pop Record.......2002-04-26

One of the best records on the past decade. Don't take my word for it. Listen to the audio samples of the songs: Martha, Vertigogo, Shine, Polyanna. Buy this record right now. You will thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago band with a big future.......2001-08-28

This fine band from Chicago have created a fabulous album. It is very rare indeed to find a band which can fuse good tunes, excellent lyrics and rich and varied use of musical instruments but I am happy to report that Frisbie are that band. Where other bands are content to repeat a chorus ad infinitum, Frisbie seem to take a song and make it change pace and direction several times. The album starts on an upbeat note with "Let gets started". Once you hear the first few chords of this number you realise that you are in for a treat."Pollyanna" is the second effort and is very pleasant indeed. If you want a good example of a song changing direction, listen to "Shine" which changes pace and mood near the end."Paid in kind" is a very strange song indeed and speeds up and slows down several times. It is on this song that you start to hear the use of a trumpet which makes an appearance in several of the songs and is very rewarding to hear. "Martha" is a pleasing ballad which includes what I think is a bassoon !"To see and be seen" is a superlative number which in my opinion is one of the highpoints of the album and is an obvious nod to Big Star (very similar to "Back Of A Car"). "Disaster" is another fine song. Then comes what I believe is the best song on the album "Momentito".The song has everything - 12 string guitars, John Fogerty-style vocal delivery and trumpets. 30 years ago this song would have been recorded by the Byrds ! The next two songs "Hifalutin" and "Booksong" are both strange and hard to figure out but are a testament to the band's originality."Vertigogo" is a classic three minutes of pure pop and has some great harmonies. The final song "The Shuffle" has a banjo on it and is great fun. All in all ,this album is an absolute gem and should be listened to at every opportunity. Frisbie have supported Matthew Sweet on recent tours in the US and I pray that they come to Ireland in the future as I think they are magnificent

5 out of 5 stars one of this year's best.......2000-09-28

"It'll be easy and fun...we'll be the only ones."

Frisbie's The Subversive Sounds Of Love is one of those small miracles, one of those rare musical epiphanies that any serious music fan continually searches for. Funny how with so many cd's that are released each year, and with so much high profile hyping for 'major'albums that prove to be largely unsatisfying, that it would take one dinky debut release from a Chicago indie band to show me I had one jewel of an album in my hands.

The Subversive Sounds Of Love is pop rock at its finest: derivative of everything the best rock music has offered in the past thirty years while continuing to be progressive, taking the combined influences to a higher level. The influence of Big Star, Cheap Trick, Paul McCartney, Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys, Husker Du, The Replacements, Burt Bacharach and even contemporaries like Sloan can be heard in Frisbie's sound.

It all starts off with 'Let's get Started', the perfect album-opener, with its irresistable guitar riff and chant of "Let's go!", charmingly oblique lyrics ("Because it's easiest to believe/when ambiguities run more like some regime"), and an instantly memorable melody.

'Shine' is one of the best songs of the year, with its insistent acoustic guitar, even more insistent, heart-on-the-sleeve vocals, and gorgeous chorus. Not to mention some of the greatest self-deprecating lyrics since The Replacement's Tim album: "My brain is a coffee stain on a letter you keep in your pocket/and my tongue is a poster hung on the back of a door and you can't unlock it."

The rest of the album soars. "Pollyanna" shows that Frisbie are masters of what Cameron Crowe calls "happy-sad", something Paul Westerberg himself has mastered over the years; 'Paid In Kind' seamlessly combines power chords and harmonies; 'Martha' evokes Big Star's 'The Ballad Of El Goodo'; 'To See And Bee Seen' sounds a lot like the best work by Matthew Sweet; 'Momentito' is remarkably similar to Grant Hart's Husker Du songs; and 'Booksong' is wide-eyed sappiness at its greatest, complete with cute, Herb Alpert-like trumpet fills that sound like they were composed by Bacharach himself.

Things take a turn toward the artsy during 'Wrecking Ball.' While it isn't as catchy as the other songs, it grows on the listener and just might be the best song on the album. With its abstract lyrics (you can practically see the band winking as they sing the words) and slow but deliberate pace, it builds in momentum, becoming a four-minute epic. The instrumental 'Highfalutin' is next, and starts off sounding like a mimimalist, lo-fi offshoot of Stereolab, but gradually electric piano and chiming guitar come into the picture, bringing gentle melodies into the song.

The album comes to a spectacular climax during the powerpop of 'Vertigogo'. Here it all comes together in a two-and-a-half minute piece of pop genius in its most basic form: nothing but loud guitars, moog synthesizer, and fabulous harmonies that carry the listener into the sky. The song leaves you breathless.

So what better way to end the album than the folky banjo stylings of 'The Shuffle'? Very similar to the folky turns Husker Du took during their autumn years, it's serves as a whimsical goodbye, with silly lyrics like "there's no bufferin'/for the sufferin'" that have you singing along until the end.

The Subversive Sounds Of Love is an indie classic, right up there with Liz Phair's Exile In Guyville, Guided By Voices' Bee Thousand, and Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted, and is as accomplished as Big Star's Radio City, The Replacements' Tim and Husker Du's Warehouse: Songs And Stories. Like those albums, the people who seek out Frisbie will treasure it, knowing they found a diamond in the rough, something that they'll pass on to their friends to show that great music does exist. You just have to keep your eyes open for it.

5 out of 5 stars Melts like butter in the sun.......2000-09-22

I first listened to this album in a rented Impala driving through the mountains outside of Steamboat, Colorado. When "Let's Get Started" took off with that "Let's Go!" and the drums and bass kicked in, I was in heaven. My girl beside me and the mountains and music reaching up to touch the cloudy pop firmament -- does it get any better? The answer is no. None better. But then it DOES get better, more layers of good, good music, as if you crossed the Beach Boys with the Beatles with Big Star. Where did that trumpet come from? I didn't even know that I wanted that in the song, but there it is and it makes it even better. Like when you're blissed out after a great meal at a restaurant you love and the waitress says, "Would you like some dessert?" and you're about to say no, because otherwise you wouldn't have enough money left to tip her, and she says "C'mon, it's on the house," so you give in, you sigh and loosen your belt and say, "All right then - bring it on."
