Editorial Reviews
Up until their major-label debut, Eventide (Parachute/Mercury Records, February 11, 1997), Grey Eye Glances greatest success came from a series of phenomenally successful appearances at Borders Book Stores from Maine to the Carolinas, as well as at small clubs in the Northeast, including New Hope's legendary John and Peter's and Philadelphia's Tin Angel. This is not the usual rock band route to stardom, but Grey Eye Glances is not the usual rock band. In fact, this New Jersey-based group didn't even intend to be a band, and whether or not they're rock or some new category is best left to critics and providence to decide.
The three members - Dwayne Keith (piano, vocals), Jennifer Nobel (lead vocals, 12-string guitar) and Eric O'Dell (bass guitar, vocals) - knew each other for quite a while before coming together as a band. Dwayne and Eric first met in 1979, not as musicians but as opposing captains of street hockey teams! Dwayne and Jennifer met in 1985 as members of a choir touring Europe with American Music Abroad. It was in 1991 that Dwayne, Eric and Jennifer joined together and recorded a demo, which was originally intended to sell Dwayne's songs to publishing companies. However, due to the overwhelming response to the sound captured on the tape, the three friends decided to officially form a band and pursue performing.
The group took a different route than most, shunning local rock bars in favor of alternative outlets for their music. One of these was Borders Books & Music in Marlton, New Jersey. This turned into a twice-a-month gig, attracting more people each time. In a single year, 18 of the top 24 events at Borders/Marlton were Grey Eye Glances shows! The band had successfully turned a noisy espresso bar into a viable music venue. Realizing the career-developing potential for performing in a retail environment, coupled with the lack of venues for original bands to play, Grey Eye Glances made what was to become one of their most innovative decisions. They expanded their base to other Borders in the area, and eventually booked and financed (on their own) a tour of 50 Borders stores along the East Coast. This enabled the group to build a significant mailing list and an outlet to sell their "indie" CD's. As the group says, "Borders was our radio."
In May of '93 they released the eight-song CD, Songs of Leaving on their self-owned JED Records. Bolstered by air-play and live radio performances in Philadelphia, the CD sold out at area stores. Soon they were headlining and selling out local venues, and opened for 4 Non-Blondes at Electric Factory's Theater of the Living Arts. Within a year they recorded their second independently released CD, Further On..., and played to 5,000 at the Appel Farm Folk Festival on the day of it's release. This was followed by an appearance with Annie Haslam's Renaissance and their New York debut at the Bitter End.
Borders notwithstanding, it is their sound that grabs unsuspecting shoppers, music critics and a continually growing base of fans. That sound is derived from a variety of influences as diverse as music itself. While often compared to British folk-rockers such as Fairport Convention and Renaissance, all three cite progressive rock as an influence and have paid scant attention to the previously mentioned folkies.
Dwayne was raised on classical music, which can be heard not only in his piano playing, but in the counter melodies that run through songs such as "Something to Live For." He claims Peter Gabriel as his biggest influence, especially in the way an artist can change and evolve. Jen cites a host of music from Jackson Browne to the Beatles, Eagles, Genesis, Yes, Kate Bush and even Broadway showtunes. Eric, a trumpet player for 15 years, shrugs off the notion of influences, saying, "I started out in the pro music scene as a horn player in a dance rock band," and played a lot of different rock 'n' roll."
So what is this sound that drives this unassuming and unpretentious trio? It's Jennifer Nobel's crystal-clear, emotional vocals aided by inventive interwoven harmonies from Dwayne and Eric. It's Eric's melodic, yet forceful bass work and Dwayne's keyboard playing and sense of melody. The combination of these forces raises Grey Eye Glances far above the ordinary. And the three would be incensed if the addition of their usual accompanists, guitarists Brett Kull and Bill Belcher; keyboardist, John Avarese; and drummer Paul Ramsey weren't mentioned. Together they achieve an ethereal blend that crosses musical boundaries, often tells a story and evokes a catalog of emotions. They can pop rock with the best on "Hard" and "Halfway Back" or be moody and mysterious on the equally catchy, "Days To Dust." While Dwayne was originally the primary songwriter, now all three write and collaborate and Eventide only hints of future promise.
Recorded in Nashville, Eventide was produced by Glenn Rosenstein (best known for October Project1s debut) and engineered by Steve Boyer (Peter Gabriel's So). Rosenstein captured what the group plays on stage, and according to the band, he did more than that: "This album definitely swings more than our two earlier albums. It still has the melodies, it still has the harmonies, but this has a more underlying pulse to it."
Underlying pulse or not, if you catch Grey Eye Glances live, you'll hear the album with the addition of Dwayne's humorous and engaging between-song commentary. On "Something To Live For," Jen sings, "I want to know what lies ahead, I want to see what is in store." As you listen to this disc, you will realize that the answer to that question is a great deal - because Grey Eye Glances are not grey, but a rainbow of colors and easily worth much more than a passing glance. Beautiful music carries insightful thoughts.......2001-08-08
"Further on..." is _not_ a nice first try followed up by better albums. It is great and perfect on its own. This music is full of kindness, beauty, sadness and insights. Just listen to this from "Whispers":
"I took seven looks but I counted too fast / It all was so clear hidden deep in our past / It was very quiet despite the great blast /
Darling / Are you out there / Hidden in the fog / Did you cross / When you were told to / What happened?"

Grey Eye Glances is a tough group to pigeonhole; that's part of their appeal. They remind me (and many others) of October Project, but the mood of their songs is more open and light. There is an optimism, a sense of a quest, that runs through their music.
By the way, while they *sound* nothing like Moxy Früvous, GEG is a lot like the boys from Toronto in that their live show is an absolute must-see for a fan, and could easily convert a casual listener to a devotee. The onstage banter is priceless (the guys like to tease Jen about being shy), and the songs are often much richer-sounding and more immediate. The last time I saw them, they riffed on "Feel Like Makin' Love" - it was hilarious. I highly recommend all their recordings, but be sure to see them live if you get a chance!

Further On Up The Road..........2000-07-09
Those of you that have been following Merrell's career, and my coverage of this fine artist over the last few years, know that when he puts out music it's a special experience for anyone and everyone that has a connection to the man and his music. He is admired and respected by all who come in contact with him. That reason alone, has given him immeasurable success over the past forty years. This success cannot be judged by record sales, oh no. The far reaching appeal of Fankhauser and his music is what sets him apart from his contemporaries.
The groups adaptations of blues standards like "Walking The Dog", and classic rock n' roll like "High Heeled Sneakers", will warm your soul and keep you smilin' for hours. Merrell's son Tim is on hand to lend his biting and snappy guitar to the mix to inject some youthful exuberance and energy to the sound. Ed Cassidy (of Spirit fame), who is 76 years young, cuts loose with a hell bent for leather drum solo on the second CD called "Cassidy's Big Beat." If your feet aren't moving to that song, check for a heartbeat! I could listen to drum solos like that for forever and a day.
As Merrell Fankhauser gets further on up the road of life, his music takes on new meaning and importance. Hopefully this man will receive what he is due very soon. I hope and pray the media and the general public recognize this superb talent while he is alive. It happens all to often in this day and age... people are celebrated after passing this way. The time is now to let Merrell know just how much he is loved and appreciated by the world music community. Visit his site, send him an E mail. He has brought joy and happiness to myself, and my family for years now through his ultimate medium of communication, music. This two set CD is yet another testament to his steadfast loyalty to his craft and his fans. Don't miss this, it's a classic.

A Pleasant "Soft Psychedelic" Surprise.......2005-07-07
However, the record is quite interesting, showcasing Del's songwriting talent as well as his voice, both in a new setting of "Sgt. Pepper" orchestrations and some "strange studio sounds." The real treat though (and the one element often missing from such records) is that the songs are good. Several sound like instant classics, although the album is more than obscure it seems. I found myself listening to it over and over during the first day I received it, amazed by his voice and by his attempt to be "relevant" without sacrificing what is essentially his own spirit.
For fans of Del, highly recommended.
