GREAT MEMORIES.......2007-07-20

MY PARENTS PLAYED THIS ALBUM THE ENTIRE TIME I WAS GROWING UP DURING CHRISTMAS TIME. I LOVED IT. BRIGS BACK FUN TIMES. WHEN I SAW THAT IS WAS AVAILABLE AT AMAZON, I BOUGHT IT RIGHT AWAY. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO LISTENING TO IT.

Christmas With Conniff.......2007-01-27

This is a nice Christmas collection, perfect for easy listening. Most of the music here is arranged in medleys, with "Ring Christmas Bells (Carol of the Bells)" being one of the few stand-alones. It's also my favorite of the lot.

"The Little Drummer Boy", which is arranged as part of the first medley, is another stand-out number. With the exception of its final few seconds it's almost identical to the Harry Simeone Chorale version.

All-in-all, a good bargain buy.

Joyfull X-mas album!.......2007-01-23

This is a must have album for Christmas! Listened to it as a kid during the 70's and have missed it ever since! Very glad I found it on amazon for this X-mas. One gets in a really good mood listening to it! I gladly recommend it to everyone!

A Blast from the Past.......2007-01-17

This was my favorite Christmas album in the 60's and 70's. It's upbeat, "modern" treatment of old standards was attractive to me as a child. Now my kids love it just as much. It brings back good memories!

This is one of the most authentic traditional Christmas music I've ever heard. This is a family holiday favorite and will be passed down through the generations of our family.

Danielle Woerner has long been prized on the classical music scene for the exquisite intelligence of her singing and the distinctive beauty of her voice. Her range is and has been astonishing--from opera to art song--and in this recording one can her that sound and intimate sensibility which has earned her such a splendid name. Buy it!

Luscious and deeply moving.......2000-12-29

Danielle Woerner's voice is so rich and mellow, you can get lost in it. I was not familiar with this repertoire, and found Luening's setting of Emily Dickinson to be marvelous--sometimes serious, sometimes playful, always true to the deep emotions. I also liked the setting of William Blake's "Ah, Sun-flower", which Luening composed especially for this singer. I found myself listening over and over to the poems of Gail Godwin as set by her partner and collaborator, Robert Starer. The compositions are moving and complex, and Woerner makes excellent musical choices for presenting them in a way that the audience can truly feel. Highly recommended.

So Much Like Being There.......2007-01-27

I have always enjoyed Benjamin Britten's music & used to sing quite a lot of it, as well as John Jacob Niles' arrangements, which I found I absolutely had a passion for. The tracks on this CD are excellent. All musicians are extremely talented & have a definite connection with one another as well as with their audience. Listening is like being at the performance. The acoustics are wonderful & took me back to when I used to perform in churches & auditoriums & the voice & instruments were carried naturally. If you like these composers & enjoy simple, yet intricate arrangements, I'm sure you will find this collection to your liking.

A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-04-17

I have to say the opposite of the last review. I found this CD to be absolutely delightful. Music aesthetics are, of course, subjective in nature and sometimes what a listener expects to hear does not always meet their expectations. Perhaps the other fellow was expecting a disc of a more Romantic nature.

I found this recording to be quite beautiful. It does have a simplistic feel to it but I believe that that was the composers intention since some of it was written for his children, as noted in the program notes. The simplicity only adds to the beauty of the pieces. I think that both pianists did an excellent job of delivering a masterful performance.

Not impressive at all!.......2006-02-07

The pianist didn't have much expression, feeling, or dynamics. For example, the Russian Dancer can't make my family feel dancing and the whole song is just very plain.

Ancient Voices of Children is one of the seminal vocal works of the 20th century, not just for the huge demands it makes on the singer's vocal technique, but also in the way that all of its avant-garde sound effects really do reflect the most sensitive response to Garcia Lorca's poetry. Soprano Barbara Ann Martin really has the measure of the piece. She proves herself a worthy successor to Jan DeGaetani in the premier recording of the work. Her performance is thrilling, and the instrumental accompaniment, recorded in the presence of the composer, is perfect. The same holds true for the other works on the disc, particularly Crumb's haunting Dream Sequence, music of hypnotic power. In sum, a magnificent tribute to one of our greatest living composers. --David Hurwitz

Worthy of its Grammy nomination.......2000-02-21

Classical music which touches your soul and can mesmerize an audience of non-classical enthusiasts is rare ideed. Well worthy of its Grammy nomination. It speaks to you in subtle, ancient tones and evokes a spendid array of emotions. Listen to it while watching a gorgeous winter snowfall, or an evening sunset, and you'll know what I mean. Recorded in surround sound yet adaptable to stereo, it's primeval, eloquent, and emotional. I give it 5 stars!

worth hearing.......1999-08-15

I hardly agree with David Hurwitz here. Given Crumb's supervision of this recording, I was disappointed by this performance of Ancient Voices and in particular by soprano Martin, whose stagey operatic tone isn't appropriate for this work. (Jan DeGaetani's classic recording on Nonesuch 979149-2 is far better - her voice has a shadowy, folkish coloration that fits this music, while the warmer recorded sound better captures the resonance of the whole work.) Also on this recording are two Crumb songs written when he was 17 - romantic-impressionistic in style, they only faintly foreshadow his mature work. The two other pieces on this disc - the solo piano Little Suite for Christmas and the mystifying Dream Sequence for chamber ensemble - receive fine performances, though they would benefit from better recorded sound.
