5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars sublime, so ignore the slime.......2005-06-04

some people are so sick. i can't believe people are weighing in on her looks. this is about music people! charles and bloedow are amazing composers. the music is divine and pure and it is moody and it even rocks at times. the lyrics are moving, and these people who are saying this is parody are parodies themselves. they are clueless, as they can only see jennifer as a sex object. it's a pity because they are missing the boat. can't women be powerful and sexy and smart without threatening the pathetic creepy boys of this world? beautiful vocals too, lest we forget she's an AMAZING singer! And frankly, I find that the poduction values have improved over the years, less gloss, and more real muscle.

4 out of 5 stars Field of Erotic Dreams!.......2005-05-23

My friend below me is correct in his assessment that Jennifer Charles is slowly becoming a caricature, but that does not keep this album from being very enjoyable. With the loss of a major label, it does seem as if Ms. Charles' looks have began to suffer along with the decreased production values and increased hard-living...until you get a look at the picture in the sleeve of "Dreams that Breathe Your Name" of Ms. Charles in a bra, wearing a very seductive look on her face! That, my friends, is the point of an Elysian Fields Album. Close your eyes, let your imagination wander and embrace the ethereal, sublime sounds of experimental jazz, while imagining love making with the girl you wish you could have, but who is painfully out of your reach.

5 out of 5 stars She Becomes A Parody ... of Herself.......2005-04-29

As an ardent fan of the first two albums, and I haven't bought this one yet, only listened to samples, but I laughed at some of these samples (I know I know, they're a smittence of the full track, but you get an idea, eh?).

Why? Because Jennifer Charles is starting to sound like a cartoon parody of herself. Or in other words, oh so predictable ....

But maybe I'm just jaded. For sure I am. Still, I think that the price is right here and I'm already behind the eight-ball on this one, so I'm buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Ear candy...if that candy is chewable morphine.......2004-09-16

Remember listening to Mazzy Star and imagining the person of your dreams slowly spinning in the an empty ballroom with only the shine of mirrorball outlining their movements? No. Huh, well then listen to Elysian Fields and you'll get an idea of what I mean.
"Dreams That Breathe Your Name" is an album that blends blurry eyed lyrics with plodding shoegazer-jazz. Think PJ Harvey at her most quiet and intense, the dreaminess of Portishead, and the elegance of Mazzy Star. So, enough with the allusions.
Jennifer Charles has a velvet tongue that doesn't mind licking every inch of you. 'Sultry' is inadequate descriptor. Oren Bloedow is able to orchestrate a sound that feels like a blue cloud of cigarette smoke that reeks of sex, achieved and denied.
The gems here are 'Timing is Everything,' 'Live for the Touch,' and 'Shrinking Heads in the Sunset.' But you really don't lose here.

5 out of 5 stars highly essential........2004-05-06

"Breathe Your Name" is excellent, of course. But we have that on _Divine Discontent_ so the real allure here is "Northern Lights", and it's absolutely brilliant. The dreamy, glittering pop production of _Divine Discontent_ with some of the most beautiful guitars in their entire catalog, it's about as enjoyable as music can be. And the vocal melodies and Leigh Nash's voice are enchanting. Is it worth it for the one song? Yes. buy it else you will not be as happy as you would be if you had it.

5 out of 5 stars Breathe Your Name.......2003-07-12

Wow! What a beautiful song! The melody will simply sink into your head, and this is just one of those excellent songs you can listen to in your car, and you just feel like your in a movie!I first heard this song on our radio at work which plays recorded cd's by our companys compiled musicians. I would look forward to it coming on, and everytie it did I ran into the back room to read the title on the music player. Her voice is solid and she hits every note so perfectly it will give you chills of joy. Why can't more famous female artists sound like her? Songs like this should be #1 on the charts, not this Michelle Branch/ Vanessa Carlton whiney pop junk. If your lucky enough to get this rare cd single, get it! Relax and enjoy the tunes! :0)

5 out of 5 stars Popart.......2003-03-12

The highest evolution of the pop song form. This ranks right up there as one of the greatest piece of ear candy that's ever been made (The Association beware).

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm the 1st one to review this 2 song single.......2002-10-18

First of all, "Breathe Your Name" is an excellent song. It has been getting significant radio play & considerable attention. But if you are like me, you don't care if it is on the radio; you'd rather hear something good & original. Well, this song is both things. The B-side is a song called "Northern Lights". "Northern LIghts" was originally going to be on the upcoming album Divine Discontent. Sadly though, so much time has transpired since then that this brilliant pop song got cut to make room for newer material. I sure hope that this is not going to be the only single from the amazing album Divine Discontent, because I hope the next single contains other cut songs, "Us" at the very least. Sixpence None the Richer is & was a defining band long before & after "Kiss Me". Perhaps this time around after a 5 year wait, people will listen to the entire album and discover the best kept secret in the music industry.

5 out of 5 stars A Pretty Darn Good Lohengrin.......2005-04-14

I got this Lohengrin from the local library, and I tried to get a taste of what I was in for by looking it up here on Amazon.com. But to my dismay there were no reviews. And later, to even greater dismay on my part, I found that there is no reason for such a lack of reviews! For this is a solid Lohengrin. While Peter Hofmann is not the most vocally resplendent Lohengrin (he isn't a Konya or a Domingo), he turns is a good performance, and Karen Armstrong is a passionate Elsa who plays the part admirably. The rest of the cast is strong on the whole. But the real splendors of this set spring from the pit - Woldemar Nelsson (of whom I had never heard until I discovered this recording) leads the Beyreuth Festival orchestra in a burning account. They are a truly Wagnerian orchestra (it would be a shame if they weren't), and Nelsson brings out all the Master's colors. The energy of a live performance just pours out. Never have I heard the preludes and prominent sections played with such an intense timbre. It's amazing to hear.

Therefore, though this set doesn't match Kempe, Solti, or Leinsdorf overall, it is a strong alternate set that should not be ignored.

    Album Description

Here's what legendary British rock critic Nick Kent (The Dark Stuff) said about it in Liberacion, the major liberal daily of France:

"How is it possible that this talented duo from New York with three splendid records to their name (Dreams... is the fourth) is still only known to a small 'cult' audience? In England, similar duos such as Portishead and Goldfrapp have won the support of a wider audience with the same qualities (film-noir type soundtrack music and the capable vocalizing of an unconstrained diva) as the two protagonists of Elysian Fields (instrumentalist/composer Oren Bloedow and singer Jennifer Charles) have employed for eight years now.

Then again, maybe we have their out-of-the-mainstreamness to thank for a sound that is still unique -- as sensual as a sleepwalker's wet dream. as the album title suggests, the 13 songs assembled here evoke the many langorous musical dreamscapes traversed by the enchanting, and infinitely erotic, Jennifer Charles.

Equally remarkable is the manner in which Bloedow envelops the veiled vocals of Charles in a jewelbox of ethereal sounds on such highlights as 'Live For The Touch,' 'Shooting Stars' and 'Narcomiscoma.' In other words, this new record, just like all of its predecessors, comes heartily recommended."

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars New York Sleaze.......2004-09-21

Elysian Fields are a New York City band that has never been fashionable. They are more like Mazzy Star and Congo Norvell and other singular bands that couldn't care less about fashion. This is their fourth album and it sounds a little like the new one by The Cardigans. Nina Persson is another person who has done a lot of uncompromising work. They work out of a goth and industrial background, which have both become anachronisms. Smartly they have done a more folk album and left their black clothes behind. Maybe some of their collaborations with people such as Tweaker and Lovage, has expanded their horizons? This is maybe their best album. Sometimes doing an arty record is valid. Doing their own thing is the most important thing they could do. Like Hannah Marcus, there has been an embrace of the art of Fred Tomaselli. Is he the dark lord of the music underground? Elysian Fields always seemed like a bad name for a band. This record reminds me of Otter. She is someone people might think is goth, but she isn't.

5 out of 5 stars Another breathy, delicious gem from Oren and Jennfier!.......2004-09-07

I finally got this album after waiting for what seems like forever and I absolutely love it. "Passing on the Stairs" is probably my favorite track. The lyrics are so vivid and beautiful, and I can perfectly see a rainy, jazz-filled film based on the story in the song everytime I listen to it. The saxophone on "Shrinking Heads in the Sun" is divine, and dare I say "saucy". The whole album just drips sex and sensuality, like all EF works. This band has got to tour the US more. They are yummy.

5 out of 5 stars Please tour in Seattle.......2004-08-30

I've been waiting for about 7 years since your first EP was released and as far as I can tell you haven't toured out west. Please stop by next time!

5 out of 5 stars An essential CD for EVERYONE!!!!!.......2004-07-16

I've waited close to four years (minus side projects) for a new album. Let me tell you, the wait was well worth it. I agree with most of what the other review said, except it sounds like track 3 "Timing is Everything" will be the single. Why is this band not recognized??? They need a US tour sometime in the future. Oh, and did I mention, go buy this CD!! You will not be disappointed!!

    5 out of 5 stars What a fantastic CD!.......2004-05-25

Elysian Fields just get better and better. The dreamy feel, the creamy pop textures, the subtle complexity, the sly humour, the relish of sound and delight in harmony. Ahhh! Baby Get Lost should be a radio hit--in fact this whole record is probably the band's most accessible. Only the repetitive and predictable Passing On The Stairs is less successful than it might have been. Someone willing to spend some money on promotion, please step up.
