Lionel Bart's wonderful musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic was the first London stage musical to be transplanted to Broadway with the same kind of sensation it received in Britain-- something that is now common in these post-Cats/Les Miserables times. Although no one from this British cast ever became enormously famous (future Monkee Davy Jones was in the second Broadway cast)--and Sir Carol Reed's film version receives all the critical accolades--this remains the better recording, featuring all the songs cut from the film, while excluding the film's musical interludes that simply seem annoying without the visuals. Just compare Bruce Brochnik to the film's Mark Lester in the title role. Or Clive Revill to Ron Moody's Fagin. Or any of the principals, for that matter--and the differences are remarkable. --Bill Holdship

4 out of 5 stars Food for Thought - Great for Productions.......2007-07-03

If you are considering a production of Oliver this is a great recording that has good background information. It does skip some of the overture music but the rest of that tracks are well done.

3 out of 5 stars Oliver is a classic and meant to be heard and seen........2007-05-25

Many of these numbers are well known. And the dark tone of the story being told is well represented by the choices made by the actors and their directors. But it IS rough and dark and mournful. Not a road-trip CD, rather a show to see in the theater.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE SIR! I WANT SOME MORE!.......2007-02-27

I starred in my local summer stock company's production of "Oliver," in the summer of 2005. I used this CD to practice learning the musical numbers, by listening to it on my iPod. It has some very memorable numbers such as "Oom-Pah-Pah," "Food, Glorious Food," "Who Will Buy?" "That's Your Funeral," and "Consider Yourself." The one Oliver song that gets on my nerves. But I just can't get enough of most of this music, after the great time I had in the show. I even listen to the soundtrack on airplane trips and car rides sometimes.

2 out of 5 stars Oliver-The Broadway Cast.......2006-03-17

As an original cast member with Florence Henderson's "Sound of Music" tour 45 years ago, I have a unique perspective about this recording. Even the musical director comments at the end that this version of "Oliver" was not particularly well sung but that the cast had a lot of energy.

Unfortunately,(in my opinion) this energy doesn't translate suficiently to the recording and I agree - it's not particularly well sung. Again, from the perspective of a former child performer singing with other kids, it actually is possible for a group of children to sing together and make pleasant-sounding music. The adults in this "Oliver" aren't up to musical snuff either.

Although I haven't heard it, I'd be willing to take my chances on the original London version before settling for this one (which, by the way, was recorded in an LA studio before it even got to Broadway.)

5 out of 5 stars spectacular Broadway album.......2006-02-15

The cast album to the 1963 Broadway premiere production of OLIVER! was actually recorded during the show's pre-Broadway run in Los Angeles. OLIVER! played to subsequent audiences in San Francisco, Detroit and Toronto before opening at the Imperial Theatre in New York on January 6, 1963. The show played 774 performances before prematurely ending the season to play a 9-month national tour, later returning to New York for a `farewell' run of 64 performances.

As she had done to rapturous acclaim in London three years previously, Georgia Brown played the role of Nancy, and earned similar praise for her performance in New York. Her rich, velvet-tinged voice is especially haunting with the chill inducing ballad "As Long As He Needs Me". Composer Lionel Bart wrote "It's a Fine Life" especially for Brown after learning she had been cast in the role in the London production.

Ron Moody had also scored heavily in London with his tour-de-force turn as Fagin, but with producers fearing his portrayal `too ethnic', the role was taken by Clive Revill for the Broadway premiere. Revill had just come from his celebrated role in IRMA LA DOUCE, and his interpretation of Fagin is every bit as valid as Ron Moody's. Bruce Prochnik is a winsome and wistful Oliver, and Michael Goodman is a delight as the Artful Dodger. Wisely-retained from the original London company were a handful of the first-rate supporting players: Hope Jackman's shrill Mrs Corney; and the up-and-coming Barry Humphries as Mr Sowerberry (Humphries would later graduate to playing Fagin before his beloved alter-ego Dame Edna unleashed herself on the world). The promising young belter Alice Playten was smartly-showcased as Nancy's offsider Bet.

But, the sound mix on the Broadway album has always been rather flat and dull, despite being recorded in the stereo format of the day. Voices and orchestra have no vibrancy or depth, and this was due to the studio in which they recorded it, where the ceiling was very low and the sound did not have the necessary acoustic projection. Nevertheless, the recording has a charm and energy which overrides the technical shortcomings.

This new CD reissue from RCA offers some interesting bonus materials including musical director Don Pippin sharing his memories of the show; Barry Humphries performing "That's Your Funeral" (from the London cast album but left off the Broadway album); and a live recording of Patti LuPone singing "As Long As He Needs Me" (LuPone played Nancy in a short-lived Broadway revival in 1986).

Good value.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars delightful studio "Oliver!".......2007-04-28

This is the 1962 London studio cast recording of Lionel Bart's OLIVER! The recording--featuring several famous British celebs--is a fantastic rendition of the score.

Alma Cogan, a famed British songstress, plays the role of Nancy; and the part fits her voice like a glove. Dynamic with "It's a Fine Life" and "I'd Do Anything", she also tugs at the heartstrings with a chill-inducing "As Long As He Needs Me". Ms Cogan could--and should--have been one of the leading singers on the world stage, had she not died of ovarian cancer at the age of 36.

Stanley Holloway, star of the Broadway, London and film incarnations of "My Fair Lady", plays the villainous rogue Fagin. He delivers a comic and sly performance with such numbers as "Be Back Soon", and "Reviewing the Situation".

Playing the title role, Denis Waterman sings a tender "Where is Love?". Tony Tanner ably-delivers as The Artful Dodger with a lusty "Consider Yourself". This recording also features the fondly-remembered character actress Violet Carson (who played Ena Sharples on long-running British soap "Coronation Street"), in the role of vile Widow Corney.

On the whole, this rendition of OLIVER! features enough top-drawer talents to help ensure it becomes an often-played title in your collection. Snap it up today!

5 out of 5 stars Be Good to Yourself..........2003-07-09

....is more than a song track, it's what you'll be teaching your kids with the help of Dr. Mac and his friends. There are many "self esteem" products out there that force feed the issue with contrived lyrics and forced melodies. Listen to one song from A Pocket of Tunes and you'll know this is different! Dr. Mac's material is as energizing and entertaining as it is supportive of children's needs. With engaging lyrics that never trivialize the message at hand and melodies that will even have grownups humming in the shower, it should be part of every family's CD collection! In addition to the 14 song CD, a 48-page teacher/parent guide includes reproducible lyrics and activity pages as well as valuable tips and teaching ideas. The suggestions are easily used with an individual child, or a classroom of kids, making this product a worthwhile purchase for parents, day care providers, and teachers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Great music and activities for kids and adults, too.......2003-02-04

Dr. Mac has done it again! Not only will your kids love this music, but my foot has been stomping all day! Finally some kids music that I can enjoy as an adult.

The activities that go with the CD are great educational tools. Perfect for evenings at home with the family. The lessons and values taught are excellent.

Happy listening and learning!

5 out of 5 stars fabulous-loved it!.......2003-01-14

I was recommended this CD by a friend and it has been playing in our house ever since. I love the mix of styles-a lot of fun to listen to. Dr. mac's voice is melodic and sweet. We are waiting for a second cd from this very talented singer!

5 out of 5 stars What every parent needs!.......2002-12-23

This CD and parent guide/song lyric/activity book is the best on the market! As a mother of two, I am thrilled to have discovered a fun and exciting way to engage my kids in character building education through song. Each song on the top-rate CD explores a valuable lesson in social and emotional learning without FEELING like it is teaching a lesson. "Let Me Play Too", "Everybody Wants to Find a Friend", and "Practice" are just three of my family's favorites. Concepts such as cooperation, responsibility, celebrating diversity, self-respect, communication, and honesty are explored. Many conversations in our car have directly developed as an extension of listening to the CD on the car stereo. The best part, as the parent who has listened to each song approximately 20 times...I still enjoy it too!

Ok. I haven't bought this CD, but I've listened to samples and, well, as my title says..........

I would suggest buying the actual movie soundtrack instead. I've seen that movie so many times, it unbelievable. And it sounds good.

My high school is performing Oliver this year. To familiarize myself with the score I purchased all of the Oliver CDs I could find. I came across this one on Amazon.com. The score is brilliantly recorded by the National Symphony Orchestra of England. I wish I could say the same about the vocals. Julian Forsyth does a fine job in the role of Fagin, but Josephine Barstow, who is about 25 years too old for the part, does an amiable job as Nancy. She sounds OK, but she is just not believable, her voice is weak at some points. Richard Van Allan, who plays the villain Bill Sykes, is also just OK. He is trained as an opera singer, and it shows. You don't really hear him being mean or scary on this CD. Both Oliver and Dodger, on this CD, are what takes the ratings down. Both of them cannot carry a tune in a bucket. Also, Dodger sounds like he is twenty years old. It is scary. On top of all this, the numbering of the tracks on the back of the CD are one off for each track, so beware! But don't let me discourage you. This CD is still a pretty complete recording. If you enjoy Oliver go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Martial Music from the Age of Reason.......2006-07-16

This is a fine collection of less well known fife and drum music. The playing is superb. The Middlesex County Volunteers represent the collective genius and enthusiam of all the Colonial period re-enactors in this area of music. Although we have the standard "Yankee Doodle" here and there, its interspaced with many fine and certainly not very well known pieces from German and French sources of the period. The fifes have a stronger, fuller quality as noted by one of the reviewers above which gives them a better quality from the standard we normally hear in this regard. MCV has developed what is normally just limited Field Music into a wide ranging tonal sound. These guys also have smart uniforms and no doubt put on a great marching display. Look for them at the Edinburgh Tattoo very soon. With US military bands limited now because of service requirements groups like this will have a greater role to play for local and International Military Tattoos. They can certainly represent the USA every bit as well as the Old Guard Fife and Drum in DC. I look forward to seeing more from the MCV.

          5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2002-05-17

This is another great CD from Middlesesx County Volunteers Fifes and Drums. It has a good varity of songs with some great harmonies. This corps uses 10 hole fifes, so the sound is a lot nicer than with the 6 hole fife.

          5 out of 5 stars A Delight to Listen!.......2001-07-31

This ensemble's playing is very graceful and elegant. It certainly does give a flavor of the kind of music that was played during 18th century battles, military marches, and training exercises. Perhaps this was the music George Washington's troops heard playing when they were marching into battle.
