Sound is very good on the home stereo. Perfect if you have a hdcd player. Sounds really good on the discman as well. This disc has a longer playing time than the first.

HDCD adds sound value.......2002-07-15

I bought this CD to go shopping for high end speakers. Not knowing really what HDCD was or how it sounds. Well, I also took along regular 16/44 CDs as well.

Conclusion: huge difference in sound... I would say moderately improved dynamic range, but more importantly, the resolution of the sound. You can hear (on track 3) the chorus taking breaths... and on certain systems even individuals taking breaths at fractionally separate points in time during a rest beat.

With good electronics and your preferred selection, and I mean near reference quality electronics, the HDCD sound MOVES you. I don't know how SACD sounds, but when I get my new room together, HDCD is definitely going to be there.

FYI, I listened to HDCD on a mark levinson 390S... so HDCD had the benefit of excellent D/A.

My immediate favourites are tracks 2 and 3. I must go find more Russian vocal type stuff... very cool sounds. Track 2 (Vikings) is amazing... the pipe organ wants to bring down the house if you run it thru 350w/channel and Wilson Watt Puppies.

I Was Skeptical, but Hearing is Believing.......2001-04-06

I bought a Toshiba 5109 last year for the progressive component video capability. I knew that it had a HDCD decoder but that fact didn't make much of an impression at the time. I didn't buy it for that reason and it wasn't a factor in my evaluation of DVD players. I was wrong, it should have been.

Two months ago my interest in possibly buying a SACD and DVD-Audio player caused me to take a look at this older but more established 2-channel technology...

I bought a couple classical recordings of some favorite works (various Copland and the Bruckner 9th) that were well reviewed. I was stunned at how exceptionally good they sounded, as close to a live performance in a good hall in a good seat as I have ever experience in non-live setting, but was this the exceptional quality of the recoding engineering only or was the HDCD technology a factor, too?

The final proof was this sampler, which has comparisons of the same material in regular 16-bit format and HDCD. I can't begin to describe the incredible difference it makes. I hesitate to say it, but the words "profound difference" comes to immediately to mind.

I had always been skeptical about audiophile comments about how something was lost when the industry moved away from analog vinyl to CD format. I no longer am.

One caution if you play this CD, track 7 has exceptionally wide dynamic range. Luckily, I am cautious and my system can handle huge transients, but I think I may have melted the windows near one of my speakers -grin-, the brass sound is white hot.

I can see why Microsoft purchased this technology.

It's hard to find noteworthy music for clarinet and piano, not to mention accessible contemporary compositions. Composer and pianist Easley Blackwood expands the repertoire with two accessible yet substantial works written in 1994 and receiving their recording debuts on this CD. Both Blackwood works were written for John Bruce Yeh, assistant principal clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who performs on the album with Blackwood. "These are pieces worth playing, worth mastering," Yeh says. "Blackwood has perfect understanding of what the instrument does well and how to make the best of it." Most clarinet and piano works by major composers are for the B-flat clarinet, so Blackwood took a different tack by writing for the Clarinet in A and the E-flat piccolo clarinet. His richly melodic, high-stepping Sonata in A minor for Clarinet and Piano moves with a ballet-like rhythmic verve. His festive Sonatina in F major for Piccolo Clarinet, Op. 38 explores the uncharted lyrical side of an instrument usually relegated to humorous or grotesque effects in large orchestral works. "There is no repertoire whatever for piano and E-flat clarinet -- at least to my knowledge," Blackwood writes in the CD booklet. Best-known for his somber, sprawling organ works, Max Reger reveals surprisingly witty and tender sides to his musical personality in the Sonata No. 3 in B-flat major, Op. 107 (1909), and early 20th century piece that echoes the bygone German Romantic tradition. The sonata had long been a favorite of Yeh, who convinced Blackwood, a musical collaborator for some 17 years, to consider adding it to his repertoire. One reason the sonata coexists so well alongside Blackwood's is that they're "similar in harmonic idiom," Blackwood says. Yeh became a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1977 at age 19. Two years later, Sir George Solti appointed him assistant principal clarinetist. He also performs as soloist with orchestras in the US and Europe and with prestigious chamber ensembles such as the Guarneri String Quartet and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

great chamber playing of inspired chamber works.......1999-10-01

You know you've accomplished something when you can take a work like the Strauss here"Till Eulenspiegel",wrench it away from its conception of the mammoth orchestra to make an arrangement that does justice. When you have performers who intimately know the original Strauss you have a special situation, and that's what's here with the Chicago Pro Musica. All members of the Chicago Symphony who like to keep the tradition of chamber music alive. They also commission new works for them to concertize and sometimes record. Walton's "Facade" is also a tailor made work for this ensemble with its seemless lines,and overwhelming warm lyricism.

a 'found again' masterpiece.......2006-02-25

i purchased this cd when it was first released back in 1983 or 1984. i was blown away by the performance, but fairly disappointed with the excessive hiss on the recording. a made a cassette of this recording and eventually sold the cd, a decision i've regretted. i've often thought of this recording, and just this morning, came across the cassette i recorded...22 years ago! i popped that bad boy into the car player and marvelled all the way to work at the amazing arrangement and performances throughtout.

i've looked for this recording occassionally over the years but my recollection is that it has been out of print. i'm glad to find it here and am purchasing it today.

note: if you are familiar with 'the soldier's tale,' you no doubt are familiar with the narrarated version. this is a bit different as it is an instrumental, reduced in arrangement for a small chamber group with percussion. as this is obviously a repressing, i cannot speak yet to the sound quality. but, excessive hiss aside, this really is an amazing recording, sonically and performace-wise.

charming "Histoire", surprising "Capriccio"........2002-11-16

This is a delightfully crisp interpretation of Stravinsky's whimsical "L'Histoire du Soldat", which can be performed as a theater piece with narration and dance, or as on this CD, simply as a chamber composition for 7 instruments; clarinet, cornet, trombone, double-bass, and with a percussion battery representing the devil, and a violin the soldier.
Recorded in '83, there is a "closeness" to the sound on this CD that serves the music well.

One is accustomed to hearing Rimsky-Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnol" as a lush orchestral extravaganza, so this arrangement by composer/pianist Easley Blackwood for a small ensemble (flute, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, violin, cello, bass and piano), might sound very strange at first. I think it works on a different level, and though it's not the way I'd like to hear this composition all the time, one can easily appreciate this lovely piece in this "skeletal" version.

Stravinsky having been Rimsky-Korsakov's student, makes this an interesting recording. To quote the booklet insert: "...it brings together two works which, although stylistically worlds apart, are nevertheless imperceptibly connected by virtue of a significant personal and historic relationship between the composers".
The Chicago Pro Musica is comprised of virtuoso musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, organized by clarinetist John Bruce Yeh in 1979. These pieces highlight violinist Albert Igolnikov, but you'll get to hear and appreciate them all as individuals as well as a group in this unusual but pleasing and inventive recording. Total time is 41:47.

It just couldn't get any better!.......2003-12-20

Well, this might be Reason's last offering. However, I have to admit that this is, by far, the best track on the album. I just wish it could have done su much better...
The single features the radio mix, which is great (slightly different from the album version), the new song (Knoncked out, that is quite good)and the Shangain remix (I cannot praise it enough!).
Give it a try and you won't be dissapointed!

As soon as I heard this song for the first time I knew It would be my favorite! You'll be hearing in your head over and over... Melanie C's album Reason (which is another best buy)has so many awesome songs but this is definetely my favorite. Its the kinda song you want to see performed live with the whole crowd going crazy! Yeh Yeh Yeh!!! The beat is amazing, very rocky, and Mel's voice is superb! You definetely want this in your collection! The shanghai surprise remix is more of a club song but its also wicked! and the B-side "knocked out" is great with simple lyrics and good music, especially the bridge. I definetely recommend this to everyone! I definetely hope this song gets some major promotion in America, it will be a huge hit!!

Amazing CD at a bargain price !.......2003-08-13

Masterful performances and wonderful recordings. There is an abundance of magic on this disc: Artistry , dedication and musical integrity can be felt throughout but in a warm embracing way . You get hit with lots and lots of notes in rapid succession but they are fluid and lyrical and create an impression that remains long after the last note has faded.
Varied and consistently excellent is how I would describe this offering. Very highly recommended. *****

a virtuoso pianist & composer.......2002-02-11

This is a sampling of Easley Blackwood's artistry as pianist and composer. His skill as pianist is remarkable, and he interprets the music of 4 other composers on this disc, as well as 6 of his own compositions. Tracks 4-6, Carl Nielsen's "Three Pieces, Op. 59", out of his "Radical Piano" CD, is great, and in Blackwood's hands sparkles...and the most "modern" selection on this disc, the Moderato from Elliot Carter's "Sonata for Cello and Piano", with Barbara Haffner on cello is another favorite.
