3 out of 5 stars Unexpected disappointment.......2007-06-29

I was very upset to find out after buying the CD that the very first song isn't even the whole song--just a couple of lines. I basically bought this CD for that song!!! Besides that, it's a great CD with wonderful music--just wish they would have been more upfront with the song selections.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually deep, worshipful, and real.......2007-05-14

Aaron has impressed me with the depth of meaning in his lyrics, which pair up beautifully with truly enjoyable music. I put him in the same category of Christian music for depth and meaning as Steven Curtis Chapman and Steve Green. I'm so proud of him for using his talent for God's glory, and it's especially neat to see as he graduated a few years behind me from the same small Christian college. You really will enjoy this if you want something more than superficial catchiness to your worship experience. Proving all of this is multiple Dove award nominations and three actual Dove Awards. Plus, he writes his own stuff. Enjoy!! His second album is coming out soon (as of this writing May 13), and you can preorder an autographed copy on his website!

4 out of 5 stars Great Debut.......2007-04-16

I recently heard Aaron Shust in concert when he was warming up for Audio Adrenaline and MercyMe. I was very impressed.

Prior to that, I had only heard one of his songs, 'My Savior, My God'. It is a terrific song of praise. After hearing him sing several more of his songs, I decided to buy this album. It is well worth it.

There are several other songs on here that are very good. 'Glory to You' is a very catchy that you might just catch yourself singing well after you are done listening to the album. Other very good songs on this CD include the following: Matchless, Stillness (Speak To Me), and One Day.

Lyrically, this album is definitely about God and the focus is on him. There is not much here about struggles or complaints. It is very praise oriented.

There are two songs on this that seem to have excellent potential, but they are far too short - 'Give Me Words' and 'In Your Name'. I think both of them could be made into really good full length songs and I hope that Aaron considers doing that.

I would definitely recommend this CD. If you haven't heard much of his music, you will be in for a pleasant surprise.

3 out of 5 stars Was hoping for better.......2007-04-10

I guess I had higher expectations, some songs just didn't seem to be very well written

4 out of 5 stars "Aaron Shust sure to be a definite favorite" by BJ.......2007-04-09

As soon as I heard his song "Matchless" on the radio about one-and-a-half years ago, I knew that whoever it was singing the song was a soon-to-be artist in my CD collection. The lyrics of his songs (which are mostly written by himself) are truly inspiring, and his vocal talent is outstanding. Ninety percent of the songs are great if not excellent, especially "My Savior My God", a national #1 hit.
"Give Me Words" is just a simple cry from the heart: 'Give me words to speak / Don't let my spirit sleep / 'Cause I can't think of anything worth saying' / and that's the whole song.
Next comes "Glory To You", another favorite, which is faster tempo-wise than "Give Me Words" and funner to sing to.
"Matchless", the first song I heard from Aaron, is fantastic. The verses just say a lot of the names that God is, while the chorus is something new and fresh.
"Let The People Praise" is slower, but really shows off Aaron's voice (like every other song).
The rest of the songs are pretty much the same kind of thing, but the last couple songs (excluding "My Savior My God") can get lost in the mix. However, this project is an excellent debut, and his highly recommended.

Pendergrass's second album after his departure from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes continued his solo ascent. Life Is a Song Worth Singing masterfully mixes and matches moods, flowing from two very different anthems (the dramatic title track and the party jam "Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose") through seductive classics such as "Close the Door." His rich vocals ride tasty Philly tracks on one of the city's true masterpieces. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The peak..........2006-06-12

I was only 4 years old when this album came out, but I remember WELL the day my father came home with THIS album. The first song he put on was "Only You", and that did it for me!

For me this IS Teddy's peak because this album has a great balance of upbeat and more mellow material while the albums after this focused more on the bedroom. They were still good albums, but the funk factor was sacrificed. This album and his self-titled solo debut are the ones I remember most and bring back the most memories of Teddy from my childhood before his injury.

Anyway, the balance, again, is what makes this album so great. I mean he can come out with FUNK on "Only You", disco-ish on the title cut, he gets DOWN, gets FUNKY, and gets loose (which sounds a lot a like the song Rerun always danced to on "What's Happenin'"), "When Somebody Loves You Back", and of course, "Close The Door."

Like Luther Vandross, a lot of people forget that Teddy had a hell of a way with dance-oriented and upbeat music. This album is proof positive. If you're looking to buy ONE album from Teddy, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars The album that made Teddy a solo superstar!.......2003-08-24

This was Teddy's second album and "Close The Door" virtually guaranteed he would continue to be the #1 male R&B singer of the 1970s. His self-titled solo debut had set the prototype for his subsequent PIR releases but this one became his most successful project thanks to "Only You", "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose" and the above-mentioned classic ballad.

Based on a story by Guy de Maupassant, Stephen Hartke's The Greater Good is an effective piece of musical storytelling. Against the background of the Franco-Prussian War a group of arrogant French bourgeois, a political agitator and a pair of nuns are traveling by coach to escape the Germans. Among them is Boule de Suif (literally, "Butterball" or, more appallingly, "ball of lard"), a generously built prostitute. Trapped in the coach and then in a German-occupied inn, Boule turns out to be a sensitive, generous woman (yes, a prostitute with a heart of gold). When it looks as if the only way they group will escape is if Boule sleeps with the Prussian Commandant, she does so for "the greater good" despite her hatred of the Germans. Rather than being grateful, her dreadful coach-mates judge her and ostracize her. It's a nasty satire of petit bourgeois shallowness and hypocrisy and a good story.

Hartke's music is colorful and his orchestration paints situations - we hear the rocking of the coach, strings yawn out of boredom or exhaustion, the harps tinkle when it snows. He uses the light clanging of spoons when the group finally gets to eat at the Inn and, when Boule is doing her duty with the Prussian officer, we hear the creaking of bedsprings. The vocal lines are more exclamatory than melodic. The cast, led by Caroline Worra's Boule, is uniformly excellent. This is an interesting piece, worth hearing more than once. If only Naxos had supplied a libretto - the track-by-track synopsis is good, but much of the text gets lost. --Robert Levine

Disney management has often been accused of sacrificing the long-term quality of its animated features for the short-term pay-off of direct-to-video sequels to its middling modern successes. But as this soundtrack-sequel to the studio's 1998 quasi-feminist Chinese folk-tale proves, the music of such ventures can often compare favorably with that of the original. This new collection's buoyant "(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls" is offered up in two versions: A more traditional stage musical take and an antic cover by Atomic Kitten that's pure teeny-bopping Disney Channel fodder. That's Harvey Fierstein lending his gravelly pipes to the equally spry redux of "A Girl Worth Fighting For," while the decidedly more angelic pipes of Kiwi teen soprano phenom Hayley Westenra grace the elegant "Here Beside Me" by Joel McNeely and Kate Light. Selections from McNeely's deft, emotionally understated orchestral score flesh out the collection. --Jerry McCulley

    3 out of 5 stars Alright...........2005-11-30

The music in this sequal is nothing compared to the first movie, but the tunes are catchy, and for a child that just enjoyed the movie, I could see how this would be a CD they'd want to hear over and over. It could get a bit annoying to their parents however. I would suggest seeing the movie before purchasing this soundtrack, for the songs are out of order from the movie, and it's always better to have a visual of what's going on before listening to the music alone.
I wasn't impressed, but I did enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Terrible movie, but good soundtrack!.......2005-11-03

As a Chinese, I think this movie was terrible, because it made the tale of Mulan very confuse and strange. I don't want to see this movie again. But I bought this soundtrack, because the music was very good. Being fond of Lea Salonga's voice was one of the reasons.
The first song in this movie was "Lesson Number One", and it was my favourite. I love the choirs of children, it was perfect! It made me recognize the children's choirs in the church. Lea Salonga's voice was so sweet, and it's my favourite style! "A girl worth fighting for" came up in this soundtrak but it was remixed, and most of the lyrics were changed. Although it was very different from the original one, I love it. Because it gave me a good feeling, and I felt that it was more humorous than the original one. Another song named "Like other girls" is one of my favourites. Mei's voice was a little strange but very cute. The three princesses seemed to be crazy, but I could feel their emotion that they were eager of freedom and very unsetisfied with the arranged marrige. I felt very happy that they found their love and happiness by the end.
This was a movie which was so terrible but with perfect songs I have ever seen!

    5 out of 5 stars good cd.......2005-07-14

i saw the mulan II and loved the music in it, so i went out and bought the cd. here are my comments on each song-

    1. lesson number one- 5/5. cute song
    2. main title (score)- 5/5. i thought this was so pretty!
    3. like other girls- 5/5. i absolutely love this song! it has a great beat, and just makes you want to sing along.
    4. girl worth fighting for (redux)- 5/5. i love this song too, its funny
    5. here beside me- 5/5. the first time i listened to it, i thought it was "ok", but now i think its great!
    6. (i wanna be) like other girls (atomic kitten)- 5/5. i thought it was a great version of the original.

the next five songs, which are scores, are also very good!

overall, this cd was well worth my money, and the movie was even better!

    2 out of 5 stars Eh.......2005-07-04

The 'other girls' song is cute, but this reminds me of the follows up to pocahontas and cinderella and the little mermaid. Aladin's did well enough to make more, but...I think it really does have to do with the music. Mulan had that strong "reflection" by christina aguilera when she was first coming out, that established her as THE best voice, and that song, in spanish or english works well on it's own also. These sequals keep failing to have a strong song. The strengths here lie with the new score, new themes. It's easier to create a better classical piece for Disney it seems. And they have so many talented singers at their disposal...

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite soundtracks!.......2005-06-23

How wonderful! It's my favourite soundtrack. And the song named "Lesson Number One" is my favourite! Mulan's voice is great, and the children's voices are lovely too! I'll buy this album immediately!!!!!!!!!!!

    Album Description

George Carlin is back and he’s funnier than ever. The Atlantic Records companion album to the four-time Grammy Award-Winning comic’s 13th HBO comedy concert, LIFE IS WORTH LOSING, is another Carlin classic, a collection of side-splitting riffs and splenetic rants that cut straight to the heart of 21st Century America. Recorded live at New York City’s Beacon Theater, LIFE IS WORTH LOSING fi nds the legendary comedian with his dander at full mast, unleashing his righteous rage at such topics as â€~Dumb Americans,’ â€~Autoerotic Asphyxia,’ â€~Extreme Human Behavior,’ and more. As ever, Carlin’s blend of hilarious comedy and biting commentary forces listeners to confront the dark truths of modern culture while trying to catch their breath from non-stop laughter.

4 out of 5 stars A place for more great stuff.......2007-07-21

I saw him perform this a couple years ago in Vegas and easily my favorite part both then and now is the first bit about being a 21st century modern man. A honkie senior citizen rap. Awesome. The middle of it had lots of good bits sprinkled amongst a bunch of insightful darkness. Lots of profundity, some laughs, and overall razor sharp acumen of the modern version of obeservation. The last bit just seemed like a pyromaniac masturbatory fantasy run amok and I must admit, I found this bit a little on the tedious side. Overall I would say this performance was very good by George's usual standard but not his best. On the scale of quality in general, this material was absoultely brilliant, despite it's unflinching and unapologetic submersion into the underbelly of American culture and a slight proclivity towards rambling at times. Even after all these years and multiple paradiem shifts, George is still edgy, relevant, provocative and still knockin 'em dead. You go George!

2 out of 5 stars Doing old material by Bill Hicks now too ???.......2007-06-29

There's no denying Carlin's importance as a comedian or his brilliance as an original voice and thinker. But you wouldn't know it from listening to this CD. George is way past his best with a misanthopic laughter-lite performance you won't want to listen to more than once.

But worst of all is hearing him do a piece on how it's always the good people(Jesus, Martin Luther King, JFK, John Lennon) who get assassinated - a complete steal from an identical routine from the early 90's by the late great Bill Hicks, except without a funny pay-off.I can understand an opportunist like Dennis Leary notoriously stealing from Hicks, but the great George Carlin too? What's going on?

4 out of 5 stars Dark but truthful comedy.......2007-03-02

The only thing that prevents me from giving this 5 stars is the last track, I don't feel that George finishes the CD out strong. But, that having been said, this is a great show all in all. Not every track is funny, but they are all very thought provoking and it is nearly impossible to argue 99.9% of Carlin's points. The dumb Americans, necrophilia, and natural disasters segments are classic hilarious Carlin. I still have no idea how he delivers the Modern Man piece so perfectly without one slip up. It's incredible the way his mind works. This man is simply a genius and I hope he keeps going strong for years to come!!

3 out of 5 stars not really that good.......2006-12-18

Well, what can I say? First I'm going to review his life is worth losing album, and then go on and write a little about his 12/10/06 concert at Caesar's at Atlantic City.

First let me say that I am of the younger generation, in my 30's, and as such, came around to Carlin when he was already angry--and I loved it. In fact, my favorite album by him was You are All Diseased. With George, you not only learn a lot about our society and the way it works, as opposed to how it should work, but laugh a lot as well.

His latest album, Life is Worth Losing, simply put, is not really funny--its drab and bleak, and you can listen throughout the entire album without laughing hardly at all. He spends over 20 minutes alone, out of 70, on suicide. The best part, in my opinion, was his opening (I'm a modern man, a man for the millennium, digital and smoke-free...)." This is an amazing play on words that are part of our 21st century lexicon and he goes on for about 3 minutes, straight, in a monologue that is simply amazing. But his 2nd best part are tracks 5 and 6, and part of 7, where he examines how fat our society is (both in consumerism and people) and then goes off to talk about our failed education system, then rants about the corporations...then returns (from tracks 2,3,4) back to suicide (on track 7).

I must have listened to this album about 5x since it was in my car, and initially i did not like it, but grew over time to appreciate his work.
Do i recommend it? yes. but it was not nearly as witty as You are all Diseased.

But here is the problem--as I said I went to Caesar's to see him, and he puts this idiot Vance or Vince Gilbert on for the opening act, who is just plainly awful. People in the audience were calling for George to come out, people at my table were yawning and ignoring Gilbert. Gilbert was singing these ridiculous songs that were not funny nor entertaining on a guitar. After about 20 minutes of torture, Carlin comes out and berates us for about 2 minutes over the way we responded to Gilbert, saying "Hey, I don't need this s***. I've come all the way from California to hear this?" "I could care less whether you find my jokes funny or not."

And he went on and on. I thought that he was going to walk off, as it was his last night at AC, and he has been known to walk off the stage before if audiences didn't laugh.

Anyways, the good thing is, he stayed on, and his material is entirely NEW. He kept on saying over and over, I have new material now, new jokes that I guarantee you have not heard, etc. And he did. He had 3 recycled jokes, from what I could count: (I'm here for me, you're here for me, no ones here for you. cockroaches with self-doubt spray, and something else.) And he did acknowledge to us that he was too morbid with the Life is Worth Losing album, and also said that he was not a cynic, but a skeptic. And he kept on referring to these points throughout--as if he was severely criticized by others, and changed his material accordingly. Carlin did say that this new act was going on for 3 months, so he probably did not have that much time to perfect it, given his heart troubles. But he was stumbling over his notes, blew a couple of jokes, forgot some things, etc. And when he forgot one of the punch lines, he just waved his arm hard, down at the audience, as if could care less, like "forget it."

Are the jokes funny in his new act? Some were really good. But when it was over, my wife and I looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders, smiled a little, and walked out. People left with a smile on their face, but no one really talked about it. And it was such a quick act--about 50 minutes.

I wanted to like it, I really did. We couldn't get tickets til the last minute, so we had to call ticketmaster and pay 150.00 each. And we got lit with long island ice-t's, to have a really good, entertaining night.

Is he finished? No, I don't think so, but we cannot help but think he is 69 now, and stand-up has got to be tiresome.

5 out of 5 stars George Still has it.......2006-10-13

I don't care who wants to bash him George Carlin still has the edge and can easily find humor in things that most comics wouldn't touch with a forty foot pole. George is an honest no BS comic who tells it like it is even if we don't want to hear it. This album is George's cynical view of the world we live in. Many tell me Richard Pryor is the best comic I say nuts to that he was a good comic but he gave up what made him funny to become a lame movie star. George knew their is only one thing he truly does good and continues to do it to this day. All in all not his best but still great.

Taylor Mali is by far the most dominant, original, and flat out boppin' slam poet. Every single one of his poems are filled with pizzaz and emphasis. Mali is not only the man when it comes to poetry, but is a damn good history teacher too. Buy anything of his that you can.

    5 out of 5 stars a different Taylor Mali..........2001-01-08

For those who haven't had the opportunity to see Taylor Mali perform, this CD is definitely a great introduction. For those who have seen him perform, it just might lend a different perspective on his work. Those pieces I'd heard performed at slams in the past, particularly "Totally Like Whatever", were somewhat disappointing for me on this CD. This is obviously a guy who thrives on competition and audiences, and the "live" versions of his poems are infinitely better because he really does come alive on stage. However, hearing his work performed without all the high drama of slam competition did give me a chance to appreciate the verbal nuances of his work in a way I hadn't in the past. He's a better and more versatile *writer* (not just slammer) than some people are willing to admit.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Ever.......2000-10-21

In a new form of poetry, slam, the mix of a great hip-hop type beat placed in the poems and the rap-style speech is a great mix, especially when the poet is sucha talented man and great person. For three years, i knew the poet from being a student of his, and forever will cherish the lessons he taught. As im sure all who had mr. mali will say, he is the best teacher with the greatest peronality you could ever meet. I have heard most of the poems and know the true excellence they display. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys spoken word and contemporary style music.

    5 out of 5 stars A mid-eighties classic.......2005-06-06

The title track is one of George's most famous songs but, perhaps surprisingly, is the only number one country hit from this chart (based on Billboard). The two other singles (The cowboy rides away, The fireman) both made the top five in the country charts.

Overall, this album is typical of George's early albums with its mix of ballads and western swing-influenced up-tempo songs. Instrumentation consists of steel, electric and acoustic guitars together with fiddle, mandolin, keyboards, bass and drums. Apart from the three tracks released as singles, I particularly like Any old time, You're dancing this dance all wrong and Honky tonk Saturday night.

If you enjoy George's music enough to want more than just the hits, you will derive a lot of enjoyment from this album.

    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD.......2005-01-01

This is top notch George, and there is not a bad song on it. "Honky Tonk Saturday Night" is a real highlight here because you can't get it on "Strait Out Of The Box". With country classics like "The Fireman", and the title track, on it, it should be viewed as one of his best CDs. Something else great about it, is that you cannot get most of the other songs, anywhere else. So if you are a GS fan, you should have it in your collection.

    5 out of 5 stars A PIVOTAL ALBUM IN STRAIT'S STELLAR CAREER.......2004-02-11

While it's difficult to say where and when George Strait's career really took off, many view DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND as the pivotal album that catapulted Strait straight to the top of the Country Music world. This album garnered numerous awards, acclaim and is a solid continuing favorite among Country Music fans everywhere.

Studded with hits like the title track DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND, YOU'RE DANCIN' THIS DANCE ALL WRONG, COWBOY RIDES AWAY and FIREMAN, this album also offers other tracks that have become hits. But then that's an old story for George Strait--every track seems as fresh and as bright as the title song and there's never any filler to muddy things up.

    5 out of 5 stars GS's big artistic statement.......2002-12-09

This album is a country standard and the cornerstone of George Strait's career. We all know and love the singles (the title track, "The Cowboy Rides Away," and the irresistible "The Fireman"), but it's the rest of the album that really shines. It's certainly more than "filler."

"Any Old Time" is a quick, breezy, fun sing-a-long with playful fiddle and guitar work. "I Need Someone Like Me," "Honky Tonk Saturday Night," "I Should Have Watched That First Step," and "What Did You Expect Me to Do" are toe-tapping honky-tonk numbers; songs you might think you want to skip until you get about ten seconds into them and start singing along. "Love Comes from the Other Side of Town" juxtaposes a light-hearted melody and arrangement with a pretty serious subject, cheating. Kind of like the country version of a punk rock idea, I guess. Regardless, it's too catchy to ignore.

The standout track on this album is the ballad "You're Dancin' This Dance All Wrong," my favorite GS song other than "The Chair." It's a bittersweet love ballad, celebrating a new love and looking back on an old one. Any other singer would have either slaughtered this song or turned it into a gaudy showcase for his voice, but GS's (as always) low-key, human delivery makes this song perfect.

This album is really best listened to in one sitting. And at under thirty minutes, that's not much of a problem. I give it my highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but typical of country's slapdash approach to albums.......2001-08-09

Country music and I have had somewhat of an on-again, off-again relationship. Back when I was about 9 or 10, I was in love with CMT long before it became "MTV for the heartland". I bought many albums from great country acts of the time like The Judds, Mark Collie (where on Earth has he gone?), Brooks & Dunn, etc. That was also when country music was still very much country and pop music was on its own plane of existence. As today's country music becomes even more indistinguishable from top 40 pop radio, I'm sure I'm like a lot of traditional country fans who are looking back to the older stuff for comfort. Now that I'm back in love with country again, one of the old guard artists I'm growing to love is George Strait. When he first arrived in the early 1980s, country music was undergoing yet another identity crisis with it sounding more like Adult Contemporary pop than real country. However, Strait was more entrenched in Western Swing than anything else, and if you wanted a tried & true country artist, you needn't look any further. But I will admit that as good a musician as Strait is, he's by no means an albums artist. He's pretty much followed the same formula for 20 years, a 10-song album of traditional country music with about 3 or 4 hit singles and selling a million copies. Of course, a lot of times, these album soon become interchangeable, and while some people consider this one DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND (1984) one of George's best, I beg to differ. As you can tell from the title, the album was probably created to back up that hit single, meaning that only a few other songs on here measure up to that great one, while the rest is basically pleasant filler. Indeed, the title track was just one of many #1 country hits for George, proving that while even such old guard personalities like Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers were hooking up with pop music's elite, a small trace of country's tradition still remained. A majority of the songs on the album are of the not-quite-a-ballad variety, & two more songs like that became hits with the Roy Rogers-sounding "The Cowboy Rides Away" and the rocking "The Fireman" both reaching #5. As expected the hits were well chosen, but only a few others are just as good. Another beautiful ballad "You're Dancin' This Dance All Wrong", and the gently swinging "Honky Tonk Saturday Night" & "Love Comes From The Other Side Of Town" are as good as those hits, and should have been released in their own right. The rest of the album seems a bit uninspired in comparison, with a lot of these songs just whisking by in the 2 1/2 minutes they last without leaving much of an impression. Nowadays, country music has begun to exploit the longer length of compact discs with as much as 14 songs on an album, and often better yet letting them establish themselves a little longer than just 2 1/2 minutes. Whether or not those albums sound very country though is a matter of opinion. But back in the age of vinyl where an album can last at least 40 minutes long, country music was still a bit in the past creating albums that barely lasted a half-hour, and not all of it very good sometimes. And even with a staunch traditionalist like George Strait, he could pay to spend at least a little more time with his music than the 29 minutes that DOES FORT WORTH EVER CROSS YOUR MIND lasts. But maybe George is slowly working his way into the modern times with some of his recent albums being given more time to breathe, and sounding less like the Western Swing of his earliest albums but still more country than your average Tim McGraw record.

    4 out of 5 stars Don't Tweak The Twang.......2007-07-22

Great original hits by rock's first instrumental star, Duane "Have Guitar Will Travel" Eddy. This CD could have been the definitive Jamie hits collection, but clocking in at just over 32 minutes with only 15 tracks, that didn't happen. The stereo remixes are hit and miss. "Because They're Young" pushes the strings way back in the mix and pushes the drums way up. Check out the much better stereo mix on Bear Family's out of print "That Classic Twang" if you can get your hands on it. I'm not sure what's been done to "Forty Miles Of Bad Road", but it's lost the punch of the original mono mix. I don't have a problem with including these new mixes, but if you've got as much space left over on a CD as this one does, include the rest of the Jamie hits along with the original mono mixes. 5 stars for the King of the Twangy Guitar, 3 for "nice try" with some of this stereo, = 4 stars. And for killer stereo mixes of "Peter Gunn", "Because They're Young", "Theme From Dixie", "Gidget Goes Hawaiian" as well as mono masterpieces like "Ramrod" and "Moovin' 'N' Groovin', try to scrounge up a copy of "That Classic Twang".

    5 out of 5 stars Dwang Eddy.......2007-03-28

Even with the three bonus tracks this CD clocks in at not much over 30 minutes. But it has all the twangs you've been looking for. And that one of the bonus tracks is the acoustically exquisite (and virtually twang-free) "Lost Island" makes it essential.

This is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez's first non-classical CD. He brings to the popular music of Latin America and Spain the same scrupulous musicianship, bright tone, and charm with which he approaches Donizetti and Rossini. Some of these songs are accompanied by full orchestra and some (such as "Ella" and "Mexico lindo y querido," for example) are with a shiny mariachi band, while a couple ("Fina stampa," "Bello Durmiente") have solo guitar as their backup. Florez has plenty of opportunity to show off his high notes--there are brilliant high Cs here and there--and his perfect vocal placement and portamento are most welcome. "Jurame," a sensual tango, is a fine example. While he can sing softly at times, Florez doesn't do quite enough with dynamics. A bit more variation would have been welcome, but he's very much in the spirit of this music. His "Granada" is stunning, and he gets the idiom of the "lounge music" numbers as well. His fans, and fans of music with this Latino tinge, will not be disappointed. --Robert Levine

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done.......2006-06-05

I bought this CD on a whim while on a road trip this weekend and boy wasn't it a pleasant surprise. Juan Diego Florez brings an elegance and beauty of timbre that I have not really heard in this genre. His phrasing is impeccable and he avoids the histrionics that most tenor CD's of this type are littered with. Technically, he has always been a marvel, but this CD seems to have more heart, soul and an excellent sense of timing than any of his prior CD's (and I'm a Rossini and bel canto nut).Hope he makes more like this! Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected and Old-Fashioned Latin Pop with a Gifted Florez in His Element.......2006-05-24

This is a splendid recording that represents blessed synchronicity between voice and material. The singer is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez, and the repertoire here consists of popular early-to-mid-20th century Latin American and Spanish songs. Barely in his thirties, he produces a sweet, warm sound that combines effortlessly with a youthful vigor. Florez can also conquer impressive coloratura passages with superb breath control. All these attributes have served him well in bel canto roles, and now he uses the same technique in these romantic ballads and ranchero songs.

Pedro Elias Gutierrez's "Alma llanera" opens the disc with a flavorful, syncopated arrangement that would not sound out of place at the Tropicana nightclub in Havana, while the melancholy mariachi-style horns of Jose Alfredo Jimenez's "Ella" provides a nice Mexican atmosphere. There is a trio of songs by Maria Isabel Granda Larco from his native Peru all arranged impeccably by the singer himself - the openly romantic "La flor de la canela", the more somber "Bello durmiente" and best of all, the intimate-sounding "Fina estampa" with impressive fretwork by David Galvez. Florez dares to tackle the warhorses that are Agustin Lara's "Granada" and Ernesto Lecouna's "Siboney", and while he puts out the necessary stops, the songs are a bit too familiar to have full dramatic impact. The arrangement on "Siboney" especially gets a bit too bombastic with syrupy strings and pounding jungle drums.

Better are the decidedly old-fashioned "Princesita" with Daniel Binelli's tango-infused bandoneon (an accordion-like instrument) and Maria Grever's "Jurame", which sounds almost like a Mario Lanza operetta-style number from an MGM musical. My personal favorites come near the end of the recording - the tropically tinged ballad, Nilo Menendez and Adolfo Utrera's "Acquellos ojos verdes" and Chuco Monge's "Mexico lindo" with its dramatic tempo changes. With his stunning voice, Florez has such an affinity for this music that it is easy to overlook some of the overdone arrangements. This is a solid example of how a crossover recording can be done with the right blend of talent and music regardless of what genre we expect from a prodigious singer.

    3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2006-05-22

I read the reviews on your site and hearing this album was just a bit disappointing. I exected much more. His rendition of this type of song doesn't hold a candle to Domingo's. Many of the songs seems lifeless and rather amateurish. He should stick to what he does best and leave stuff like this to Domingo. He is however much better than other opera singers who try to sing this repetoire.

    5 out of 5 stars EXQUISITE.......2006-05-05

This recording is wonderfully exquisite. As an opera singer, I have sung these songs in recitals many times and listening to Juan has been like a master class. His technique is superb. His "En mi viejo San Juan" brought me great memories and got my eyes wet. This tenor has brought so much hope to belcanto and fine singing. Thank you very much, Juan. Best wishes and thousands of blessings.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-04-04

What a great album! Yes, this is how you do crossover!
This collection blows any other tenor's effort out of the water. I did not think that fully fledged operatic tenor could sing such swinging Latin music and sound so good. Domingo and his often tacky Broadway collections, and Carreras misguided attempts, it's all forgotten now. Florez is the new Mambo King.
I love all the songs, what incredible finds they are. There is only one rehashed song, the famous Granada, but Florez version is fantastic. I have to admit I do not love all of his opera singing, his quick vibratto works only intermittedly, and certainly he is very good in Rossini, but his Verdi is disappointing... not that it matters on this album. I did not know he started singing in the popular music field, but it certainly shows. Muchas gracias, Sr Florez for this fabulous gift, this Sentimiento Latino. Very cool and highly recommended.

Texas-born Lee Ann Womack made bold new strides with her landmark third album, 2000's I Hope You Dance. With Something Worth Leaving Behind, she's delivered yet another impeccable, mature, and emotionally powerful song collection that will no doubt resound just as dramatically with listeners. Soulful, inward, aching, and cautiously celebratory by turns, these exquisite songs and masterful performances are anchored by the timely and hauntingly introspective title tune. Among the 12 other gems are a pair of powerfully rendered Julie Miller originals (the wailing, teeth-gnashing "I Need You" and the eerie, medieval-sounding "Orphan Train"), a wistful Bruce Robison-penned confessional called "Blame It on Me" (to which Robison contributes harmonies), and an angry, show-stopping Matraca Berg sendoff called "You Should Have Lied." --Bob Allen

4 out of 5 stars still worth checking out........2005-02-23

i'm kinda torn on how many stars to give this CD.. cause i love/like 7 of the 12 songs(i'm not counting song 13th song since it's just a 2nd verion of the first one.)i give it 3 and a half-almost 4 stars....so i set 4 stars, cause i really like Womack as an artist, i love her voice and most of the songs she has recordered befor this one. i like the sound she tries to build for the cd, and she almost makes it, but i'm not that crazy about all the songs.and thats why im giveing it 3 1/2 almost 4...but this is not one of my fave Womack cds....

i like the first 6 songs, and i knida like songs 7 i need you.. i like the vibe of the song, but then i kinda fall of. her voice sounds really great on this album, she is better then ever in that department, but not all the songs are as good. The lyrics are good on almost every song, but from song 7 and out, some of the melodies are not really down my street. though track 10, surrend is pretty okay, especialy if you listen to it in head phones, but still it's not as good as any of the first 6 songs. And i like the song "closing this memory down", i like the lyrics and her voice on this song... but it's not a 5 star song in and off it self.

even though this si not a flawless album, it's still worth checking out. casue some of the cuts are really amazing and worth a listen. so i would recomend to check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Good crossover album.......2004-05-13

I think this album should have gotten more exposure. The songs are very solid and so is Lee Ann Womack's performance. A few songs aren't my cup of tea because the production and vocal performance is overly dramatic. But this doesn't take away from Lee Ann's talent. Some folks complain that the album ain't country enough, but all music forms need to evolve and diversify in order to stay relevant. I know there was a lot of pressure to create an I Hope You Dance Pt. 2, but I think there is something very classy about this album. Something Worth Leaving Behind at times feel ethereal. I would give it 4 and a half stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars Something Worth Holding On To!........2004-05-05

LeeAnn's album Something Worth Leaving Behind, is a suprisingly nice follow up to I Hope You Dance. The songs are all heart-felt, and true. LeeAnn is at the top of her game, and only continues to get better and better. This album is one not to miss if your a Womack Fan.

3 out of 5 stars Something worth getting the single of........2004-01-07

I loved the song "Something Worth Leaving Behind" and so I asked for this CD for my birthday. Unfortunately I got it. I only really like one other song on the CD and that is "Forever Everyday". I really wish I had just gotten the single. I was highly disappointed after "I Hope You Dance" which I loved. Maybe her next one will be better.

    5 out of 5 stars Overlooked.......2003-09-19

After the success of I HOPE YOU DANCE, it's no wonder Lee Ann made an album like this. Unfortunately, it only spawned off two singles, one which was a hit, the other forgotten. The album was not well received by fans who remembered Lee Ann as the traditionalist she started out to be. This is a truly auspicious effort though. The album is more polished than anything she's done, leaning towards pop quite a bit. The format works though. The title track is in the same vein as I HOPE YOU DANCE and was the hit of the album. The song is about wanting to be remembered when we're gone. The second single, was "Forever Everyday", a good song in its own right but went literally nowhere. "I Saw Your Light" is a beautiful ballad, although running a little long at over 6 minutes. "When You Gonna Run To Me" reminds me slightly of Dusty Springfield, it's a nice midtempo ballad. "Talk To Me" is a great ballad and should have been edited to fit radio's format. Once again, like on her past albums, Lee Ann covers a few Julie Miller songs. This time she puts her own brand on the uptempo rocker "I Need You", and on the song "Orphan Train" which is the most interesting and unique song among the set here. In my opinion, the best song though is the Matraca Berg written song "You Should've Lied", Lee Ann kills it and it should have been released, it would have been a huge hit I bet. The most country song here is the Patsy Cline like "He'll Be Back". "Surrender" is a nice pop song that's one of my favorites. "Blame It On Me" and "Closing This Memory Down" are both excellent songs. There's really not one bad song here, although I don't care for the alternate version of the title track. This is a good CD if you give it a chance. She's just trying some new stuff and unfortunately this album didn't do much for her, but it's still a great album overall.
