Editorial Reviews
While detractors may grouse that Pink's third album doesn't have a dance floor anthem on it like the incendiary "Get The Party Started" from 2001's Missundaztood, some prefer their Pink straight up and damn the paper drink umbrellas and crepe paper. She's at her very best raiding her own troubled autobiography for inspiration, spitting out vituperrious vocal epitaphs like seeds from a ripe watermelon instead of the angst-ridden confessional romp she took through Missundaztood. Maybe she's worked all that out on a psychiatrist's couch, because this time out her anger is much more arch and entertaining; likely due to her pairing with Rancid's Tim Armstrong, who co-wrote and produced most of the disc and certainly knows the value of turning rage into a well-crafted musical punch line. As unlikely as the collaboration looked on paper, it works perfectly because the Pennsylvania native has always brandished a punk sneer beneath the corsets, gaudy hair color, and naughty girl demeanor. Armstrong and his Rancid cohorts (Lars Frederiksen and Matt Freeman) inject feral rock action into the disc with their truncated guitar sounds and trash can drumming and provide a perfect foil for Pink's foul-mouth rants and backstage laments like "Last To Know." But Pink hasn't shaved her spiky coiffure into a Mohawk. She still smolders on a soulful ballad like "Catch Me While I'm Sleeping" or trades vitriol with raps' redoubtable sex kitten, Peaches. --Jaan Uhelszki

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

It Was Worth The Trouble.......2007-02-04
The album artwork is also worth mentioning and leaves no doubt as to the direction that Pink wanted to go with the album. The front and back covers and the inside booklet contain beautiful photographs (both in black and white and in color) of Pink in a variety of different cabaret-inspired costumes. Her poses and expressions range from sultry to menacing.
It is easy to see that this album was not meant to be a rehash of "Missundaztood," nor is it an attempt to go completely rock. It is somewhere in the middle. Regardless of how one feels about pop singers making rock music, rock singers making pop music, or everyone making dance music, at least we can all be thankful that all of the rap and hip-hop guest singers had other things to do when this album was recorded, for they are present nowhere on it, and that may be the biggest surprise of all.

Trouble: 8.5/10 Great song, great single, and the best song to start off the CD.
God is a DJ: 8/10 Good, not great. Good dance track though.
Last to Know: 9.5/10 You want angry? You got angry.
Oh my God: 9/10 Fun song, good guitars.
Catch me While I'm Sleeping: 5/10 Ugh. It's slow, and not even a good slow song.
Waiting for Love: 10/10 Awesome. Sounds like a song Suzanne Vega would do.
Save my Life: 8.5/10 Happy-sounding song, and another dance song.
Try Too Hard: 7.5/10 Has potential, but fails to get it.
Humble Neighborhoods: 9/10 Great, and fun to sing along to.
Walk Away: 9/10 Awesome song, but isn't as catchy as some others on here.
Unwind: 9.5/10 The trumpets make the song.
Love Song: 3/10 Compared to Catch me, Catch me is a 9/10. Only reason to listen to it is...
Hooker (hidden track): 10/10 Second-best song, and especially a better angry song than Last to Know.
Overall, a buy. Only two songs are weak, but they're WEAK. Nothing holding them up. But if you like the singles, get it. If you like any of Pink's other material, buy it.

Neil Finn's solo debut carries much the same style and tone of his work with Crowded House--the intimate vocal delivery, the undeniably intelligent pop approach. What Try Whistling This lacks is a couple of cuts to break up the tastefulness that washes over everything; there's no noise like "Locked Out," no full-on heartbreak like "Better Be Home Soon." That's no reason for fans of the singer/songwriter not to buy this, but it's hard to see how it'll win many new listeners over to this occasional genius's side. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
I very much liked Crowded House, but I ADORE this album...More than 5 stars!.......2007-02-26
Oh the melodies, so unique. The intricate rich arrangements, the fabulous musicians, the rhythmic beats that carry the melodies, Neil's incredibly emotional and beautiful voice, the deep lyrics that get better each time ... I can not go on enough about this beautiful incredibly artistic heartbreaking album. One of the best of all time. The man is a complete muscial genius, and now when I hear Crowded House I love THEM all the more. But this, this is truly an overlooked piece of musical perfection.
One of my favorite albums of all time.......2006-09-13
I'm a big CH fan now, but I am equally in love with this CD, which CH and non-CH fans alike should embrace equally. The lush opening strings of "Hand Me Down," the eerie, emotional darkness of "Sinner," the beautiful chords of "Faster Than Light," the unusual and quirky arrangements, all make this album an absolute classic.
Personally, I enjoyed this album much more than "One Nil"/"One All," which I think is more sappy and overproduced.
I wonder when he'll come out with his next one?
Neil's least interesting project for decades.......2006-05-13
I was obviously very excited when Neil Finn released (Try Whistling) this album; what would he deliver this time being alone and apparently with all the freedom to experiment? Before hearing the album in its entirety, I heard She Will Have Her Way and Sinner, both great tracks and worthy classics. She Will is a straight forward song in a Beatles-esque fashion whilst Sinner is a dark moody track with a haunting rhythm. Sadly, these were the only tracks worth any attention. The production of the album is very flat, everything very professional like but lacking an edge. The songs really never come to life. I tried several times listening to the album, hoping I would get it, but no, this is for me an album that lacked a creative spark, something I can't say about anything else I had heard by Neil Finn (his next studio album, live album and recent one with his brother are for example much better). Actually, this is the only Neil Finn release that has been a favorite of mine.
It is interesting but this album gets high marks from many reviewers, actually most reviewers. My sister and one of my best friends are also big Neil Finn fans. Their reaction to this album was, however, almost identical to mine, close to being boring and not living up to expectations. It was also a commercial failure so it will remain a mystery to me how many people enjoy it. My advice, however, is to leave this one alone and listen to practically everything else by Neil Finn.
Essential.......2005-02-16
Neil has released two albums since, another solo and one with his brother Tim. But neither of these compares with Try Whistling This or Together Alone. If you like melodic pop with good wordsmithing this album is for you.

Pink Found a Place for Her Voice!.......2005-06-27
Her image and strong voice didn't really suit the pop music that the record label was placing her against.
Working with Rancid's Tim Armstrong, and the legendary Linda Perry, Pink trully found her calling on this album.
From the opening guitar riff of "Trouble" to the almost Kanye West sounding "Catch Me While I'm Sleeping", and further on into "Humble Neighborhoods" a Blondie-esque tune, Pink struck it right with this under-selling album.
She deserves a lot of props for Try This. It's a big step away from her start with "Most Girls" and "You Make Me Sick". It's also more suiting for her voice and image.
There's a sound here for everyone. Pink really opened up lyrically, writing on all of the songs, and working very obviously side-by-side with Tim Armstrong and the other writers and producers. Peaches makes a guest appearance on Pink's self-proclaimed "sex" song "Oh My God", which is, indeed, a VERY sensual song.
The ballads are good as well, too, but not as note worthy as her more rock-driven songs. I didn't find a single song on the album that felt to me like "filler", nor did I find many problems with the album.
There's a hidden song called "Hooker" tacked on at the end of the album. It's kind've funny.
The bonus DVD features the video for "Trouble", directed by Sophie Muller, who produced several of No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" era videos, and an inverview on her "Try This" album.
In conclusion, I believe that everyone should "Try This" and see what they think, you might be impressed.

One wouldn't imagine that a died-in-red-wool socialist agitator and spiritual offspring of Woody Guthrie would be able to make serious inroads in modern-rock radio, but Billy Bragg did indeed slip onto some playlists with 1991's Don't Try This at Home. Working with a full band (the Smiths' Johnny Marr and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and Michael Stipe are among the guests) with bits of brass and strings shading the arrangements, Bragg came up with a surplus of hooky songs highlighted by the minor hit "Sexuality." Conflict both personal ("You Woke Up My Neighborhood," "Accident Waiting to Happen") and political ("Everywhere," "God's Footballer") intertwine among these 16 songs in customary Bragg fashion. Ultimately, Home stands as one of the Brit firebrand's most accessible efforts. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

Mmmmmm, subtle!
Other songs (Accident Waiting to Happen) trot out Bragg's familiar, posturing anger, with tin-ear lyrics ("you're a dedicated swallower of facism") that should have been dumped a few seconds after they were written down.
And yet there they are... overcoming every sachharine, maudlin urge Bragg can't contain, a really nice set of songs: Cindy of a Thousand Lives, Moving the Goalposts, Tank Park Salute, Wish you Were Her. Even the rollicking, dumb attempt at cross-over (Sexuality) is a good listen.
The CD is really uneven, but I continually pull it out. Amidst the wincing, I usually have a great time.
Try this at Home!.......2002-12-08
The songs have stayed fresh and, sadly, seem to become more relevant every day. The story of the two boys, one white and one Japanese American, in 'Everywhere'has echoes in the way that Arab Americans are now being regarded; but, the song's strength comes from the way Billy draws us in, we hurt for both boys - the one in the foxhole and the other in the internment camp.
This album tears me up, makes me think, makes me want to sing along and makes me wish that I could play the guitar. What more can you ask for?

One of my favorite albums.......2007-04-28
Mr. Brecker's playing is absolutely mind-boggling on this CD. The opening track, "Itsbynne Reel" incorporates Irish folk music and an absolutely incredible solo. His use of the "super mixolydian" mode and phrasing put his playing a few levels above most of his contemporaries.
If you are one of those people that either subscribe to the Wynton Marsalis theory of jazz ("Swing+Blues=Jazz") or are only interested in the "head/solo/head/end" hard bop style of, say, Joe Lovano or Jerry Bergonzi, should probably look elsewhere. This is a Fusion album, and should be looked at as such.
good, but not great.... .......2005-09-22
Maybe there was too much ambition behind this one (they toss in everything but the kitchen sink), or to many different sidemen for things to really gell.
When Brecker is playing tenor, he really blows...(as in great!) I could have used less of the EWI this time around. I loved the EWI playing a lot on Magnetic by Steps Ahead, but in most of the arrangements here I think the tenor is a better fit. A few of the tunes take a while to get cooking, only to fade out at the end... highlights include Scriabin, Don't Try This at Home, Talking to Myself, and the Gentleman and Hizzcaine.
I saw Brecker's live group a few times in the late eighties, and with Nussbaum, Calderazzo, Stern, and Andrews they were positively smokin'. This album just doesn't capture how good they were as a unit. Nussbaum absolutely killed on drums!
Unique sounds from a true Genius.......2005-03-13
All you jazz police who rate this album poorly can pull your finger out of your ass and go f*ck yourselves.
Just because it doesn't sound like yet another droning unoriginal hard bop album, you dismiss it as something a "JAZZ lover" should not like.
Brecker has come up with some distinctive new sounds on this album.
Best tracks for me are: Chime This, Scriabin, Everything Happens When You're Gone and Talking to Myself.
To the guy who thinks the bonus track "The Gentleman & Hizcaine" is the best track: Get a clue ! - that is clearly the WORST track on the album. It IS kind of interesting, but it sounds like an afterthought.
PS: Cook and Morton suck !! (just thought I'd throw that in)
Don't Try This Album at Home.......2001-12-31
A compromise /a Brecker solo self-indulgence.......2001-05-28
The problem is the music itself (the first seven cuts), along with the background players, are rather uninspiring/unenergetic and serve as a vehicle for Mr. Brecker to solo over
It is pity because of the last eighth cut which originally did not make the vinyl version.
The last cut stands out due to the originality of its quirky arrangement where all the musicians are playing great.
The passion and emotion exhibited in the playing of this cut is very noticable compared to the other cuts.
If all the cuts were similar in depth like the eighth cut, this recording would be considered a jazz fusion masterpiece.
While the first seven cuts are a cut above the easy listening lite jazz ala Kenny G, Larry Carleton, Earl Klugh etc; they appear to be a compromise between the uncommerciality and lack of self indulgence/ego satisfaction of Mr. Brecker in the eighth cut.
Such a compromise does not move me emotionally when listening to this cd, thus the low score, especially when it could have been much better if a such a compromise was not made.
If this cd was rated out of 10, it would get a 5/10
