Ecstatic that this is available on CD!.......2007-06-14
I have worn my old LP to a hissy nub, so I'm ecstatic that both the 2nd and 3rd Seatrain albums are available on CD. I can't express how much I loved the 2nd album, have played it at least once a week since 1971.
Still Great -.......2007-06-11
Jerseytomato has gotten it right -- this is also my favorite all-time album. Despite the weaknesses in their other releases, everything comes together here. This is a band with many disparate influences, from bluegrass to rock to folk to blues, that blend together perfectly here. Oddly, the most well-known song on the album, "13 Questions" is probably the weakest song. The lyrics to "Broken Morning" and "Out Where the Hills" are as good as anything written in rock music history.
a few good songs.......2007-04-18
I bought this because I had to have Song of Job and it wasn't available on iTunes or any other CD. There are three or four songs on here I like: Song of Job, 13 Questions, Waiting for Elijah, and maybe one other that is at least listenable. I didn't even bother to copy the rest of it to my iPod. Just not my taste in music - but your mileage may vary, especially if you are a diehard Seatrain fan, which I'm not.
Maybe there's a reason they weren't big?.......2007-03-19
Seriously, I bought this CD for only two tracks which I enjoyed in college (Story of Job & 13 Questions), but overall, most all of these tunes sound very dated and too similar to one another. The audio quality is mediocre (at least compared to many digitally remastered albums I have) and for this genre, The Band, did it better. Too much fiddle mixed up front. If you were a huge fan of Seatrain, you'll like two albums being squeezed onto one disk (makes sense as they never did any long jams on vinyl).
Don't say you weren't warned.......2007-01-13
Old enough to know has it right. This is not the original Seatrain from 1971 that we know and love. It is a re-recording that is no good, a poor reflection of the original, a major disappointment and a waste of time and money. If you can find the original, get it, otherwise don't bother.

Outstanding Band.......2004-10-13
I purchased this "Sea Train" LP back in 1969 at a local record store. A friend recognized some of the musicians from the Blues Project, however, we never heard any of the actual songs from this album. We were amazed (back then) of the unique songs and their instrumentation. Thirty-Five years later, this LP ranks in my "TOP 10" list from a collection of over 500 albums from the 1960's through 1970's. There are very few bands that come close to this style of music (ie. It's A Beautiful Day, Hello People). Playing the first side forces me to stop and reflect, entering a relaxed state of melancholy, totally entertained by these great musicians. I had the opportunity a few years back to speak with Andy Kulberg, just before his passing. I asked Andy if the guys ever thought of getting back together for a reunion album. He told me everybody was off doing their own thing and that there were not enough fans around to warrant a reunion. That may be the case, but I am proud to have experienced this exceptional group of days passed, in my youth, when life was much easier.....at the seventh dawn, of the sixth sun, during fifth moon, for the fouth time.....................
Sea Train SEA TRAIN (not the George Martin one).......2003-08-11
I'm really glad to see other people appreciate this brilliant debut album by Sea Train--it should be released as a twofer with Blues Project PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE, which contained the same band members. I agree with the sentiment that called it was one of the greatest non-classical rock records ever (relevant because of the album's baroque stylings and virtuoso musicianship) and also one of the geekiest yet strangely moving records ever. From the time when experimental bands could still get signed...terrific violin and guitar, truly adventurous arrangements, musically all over the map, sounds like no one else and yes, it rocks too. Most of the music appears to have been written by Andy Kulberg, the flute player! I even dig the effete vocals, which fit nicely. Not to be confused with Sea Train SAME produced by George Martin which aims for a similar ecleticism but doesn't have the songs this one does....
So who's better-- even now?.......2003-08-05
As a songwriter with roots in classical music as well as pop, I've been listening to this album for 35 years and still consider it one of the ten best non-classical productions ever--
perhaps even the best. From the passages of triple counterpoint to the rapturous displays of delicious, loving pop satire ("Sweet
Creek's Suite") to the heartfelt lyrics, this work has it all.
Special compliments to the work of Richard Greene and his richly
overdubbed quartet stylings. So where are these brilliant guys now?
Exquisite pop music........2002-03-03
I saw Seatrain at the Carrousel Ballroom in San Francisco in 1968, in a program that also featured Santana and Yusef Lateef (jazz flute). Seatrain's performance was a bit unusual, for that era, in that their first set was identical to their second set, in other words, the music really wasn't mainly improvisation. That performance was also different from the album, in that the music was more percussive and vigorous, and the singer was different. He had a sharper sounding voice. He wasn't the soft-voiced John Gregory listed on the album. If there could be any improvement on the album, it would be the same songs but with the sharp-voiced singer.... The entire album is an original. No other rock'n'roll group has this style, except perhaps for the style found in Love's "She Comes in Colors," "Stephanie Knows Who," or "Orange Skies." "As I Lay Losing" is such a beautiful song, that it is worthwhile to seek out another version of this same song, on Seatrain's Marblehead Messenger album, put out by One Way Records of Albany, New York. Here, the song is entitled "Losing All the Years," and the singer is Peter Rowan. "Outwear the Hills" is one of the most beautiful of all rock'n'roll songs. It actually has a real tune! All of the pieces on this album are beautifully segued together. Most amusing is the Ventures-type surf guitar episode found on "Sweet Creek's Suite." I would say that this Seatrain album is as great as Crosby, Stills, and Nash's album with "Wooden Ships." I would say that it is greater than anything done by the Talking Heads, Squeeze, or the B52's. It is not as great as Abbey Road or Magical Mystery Tour or the Byrds' 5D album, though. To repeat, this Seatrain album is exquisite from start to finish, and the only thing that could improve on it would be to replace the soft-voiced singer, and occasional mild instrumentation, with a more aggressive singer and more forceful instrumentation, like the set I heard in San Francisco (some time ago).
I have the orginal record.......2002-01-23
In 1969, Sea Train performed at Bill Graham's Filmore West in San Francisco. The usual types of hippies were there. The room was filled with smoke and we all sat on the wood floor. I don't remember who was the main gig, maybe Country Joe and the Fish. At first their Middle Ages style outfit turned me off, but as soon as they started playing the whole room rocked, and by the time I got out of ther, I had to go to Tower records to by their album. I'm glad the CD is out. They are an classic. Real cool, man!

legendary classic!!!!.......2004-07-12
Altho' i'm from England, i spent much of my "youth" searching for musical gems,....here's one of them-SEATRAIN were one hell of a band, Peter Rowan's great songs& vocals, along with Lloyd THE MAN Baskin's superb voice, too!! Richard Green's violin made the band really shine, This, their 2nd. outing, is a real gem-the title cut being a tour de force heck ,the whole album's great - now even BETTER on c. d. --BUY!!!
The vocal harmonies, violins, and lyrics are so great........1999-07-21
I'd like to find this on CD, I have the LP and really enjoyed it so much, especially the lyrics, and the blend of the instruments.. It is a different sound and I really loved it.
This is a great old album!.......1999-07-17
This is a great old album! I don't think it's the best one the group did. Their first one, I think the name was just "seatrain" was a far better group of songs. Peter Rowan is still making music and some of his stuff sounds like old seatrain songs. I'd love to find copies of either album, tape or CD.
One Of The Greatest Unknown Albums From The '70s.......1999-06-12
Saw Seatrain in Philly, 1972. Great album, been a fan ever since. I'd love to have it on CD. I understand from Listening Pleasure that one of the band members lives in the Bay Area and has lots of unsold CD's. Wish he'd put them in play. (pun intended.)
I'VE GOT TO HAVE THIS DISK,I HEARD IT 20 YRS AGO,LOVE IT!.......1999-05-24
I DID'NT GET TO REVIEW THIS DISK BUT I HAD IT ABOUT TWENTY YEARS AGO ON A 8-TRACK TAPE MY FAVORITE SONG IS DESPAIR TIRE,BUT I ENJOY EVERY SONG ON THE TRACK I HOPE YOU RESTOCK IT SO I CAN BUY IT.

A Master of Fusion.......2003-12-21
I have just finished listening to the entire album again, too many times to count. My LP has so many scratches and nicks that I cannot wait to pick up the newly released CD version of this great album. I had the opportunity to speak with Andy Kulberg a few years ago. We talked about "Watch" and his fantastic version of "Flute Thing." Interesting enough, Andy never had the music for this song written. He promised to write down the music and, a week later, he faxed it to my attention from California. Even with Richard Greene and Peter Rowan gone, Andy manages to create another fusion masterpiece. I really enjoy "Pack of Fools" and "Watching the River Flow" which is a cover of Bob Dylan's hit. This album is a great addition to any collector of music from this era. Seatrain lives on!
Tragically unavailable.......2002-01-21
If you know and love the popular self-titled Seatrain album of 1970 (not to be confused with the self-titled Seatrain album of 1969 which is, IMO, inferior in many ways) then you must have this. Tragically though, the CD is currently unavailable from anywhere. I think it is the equal of the aforementioned album in every way. Those who loved Song of Job, 13 Questions, etc... will LOVE Northcoast, and my personal favorite, and only instrumental track on the album, Flute Thing. This album is a must have for that track alone.
You wouldn't have read this far if you weren't into the Jazz/Rock/Bluegrass/Blues fusion sound that was inventing itself in the 60s and 70s. This album is an integral part of that history and needs to be available today. I own it on vinyl and periodically record it to tape. I have worn out three such tapes already. Peace through Music... DM

Seatrain was a unique band for its time, bringing together east coast folk/bluegrass and blues with west coast rock. "Despair Tire" and "13 Questions" sound as fresh as when I was in high school.
