Stanley Kubrick's demanding perfectionism in all aspects of the filmmaking process has led to some of the most memorable soundtracks of the modern era. Kubrick's taste for the classics led to his scrapping Alex North's original score for 2001: A Space Odyssey in lieu of the "temporary" tracks he had used for editing, turning Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra into an unlikely 20th-century pop icon. For his 1971 adaptation of Anthony Burgess's cautionary future-shocker, Kubrick once again turned to the classics. Malcolm McDowell's protagonist Droog Alex's taste for Beethoven is given a nice tweaking by Moog pioneer Walter (now Wendy) Carlos's synthesized take on the glorious Ninth Symphony. Some have complained that the now-primitive electronics involved give it a dated feel. Disturbingly--and effectively--other-worldly is more like it. Kubrick also imbues repertory standards by Rossini and Elgar with dark, frequently hilarious irony, and makes Gene Kelly's sunny reading of "Singin' In The Rain" the underscore to an all-too-accurate prediction of societal nightmares to come. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Prisoner 6 double-five 3-2-1.......2007-03-16
Most of the CLOCKWORK ORANGE soundtrack's classical selections are by Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. These spirited Beethoven and Rossini interpretations remain some of the very best ever recorded.
The excerpt of Wendy's "Timesteps" is the most compelling piece here. In the film, this stark aural collage is background to Alex's behavior modification. In order to shorten his prison sentence, the violent sociopath is made chemically ill while forced to view scenes of rapine and bloodshed. His sickness can only be arrested by replacing his natural criminal urges with passive thoughts.
It's hard to listen to "Overture To The Sun" without recalling the spotlighted naked girl who tempts an on-exhibit Alex into a state of unwellness that he likens to "wanting to snuff it." His freedom to choose brutality has been taken from him forcefully, through violent reprogramming. The subsequent events that precipitate Alex's restoration into a fully non-functional member of society beset him in a fashion ironically similar to the chaos he once left in his violent wake.
The stark images and perversities of this movie tend to stay with a person. Perhaps watching Kubrick's CLOCKWORK ORANGE has in some way "programmed" the viewer, too, by desensitizing us to the madness that is all around. Maybe this film holds up better than I thought. I must have a glass of choko moloko and reconsider . . .

Horrorshow Lomticks of Music to do the old Ultra-Violence By. .......2005-07-28
My personal favorite is the title music of the film, Henry Purcell's "Funeral Music for Queen Mary," a piece so appropriate to the film that Purcell must have been channelling the future when he wrote it in the late 17th century. Carlos's interpretation of this Purcell piece is astounding in its forboding textures and alientating timbres. Electronic tympani have never sounded better - and were never used like this before. Ring modualtions, filter sweeps, phased sawtooth angel trumpets and resonate devil trombones - oh bliss!
I also liked the strange music Kubrick chose - "I want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper," and "Anthem to the Sun," both obscure and perfect.
Carlos's avant-garde composition "Timesteps" appears in abbreviated form here, and for most listeners this abridgement is enough.
The concluding ironic use of "Singing in the Rain," is wonderful, and after an album (and film) full of electronics, classical music, and weirdness, a standard is shocking enough.
There is a new version of the soundtrack put out by Carlos herself, which includes only her work. Some tracks composed but not used in the film appear here, as do some track used, but not appearing on the OST as well. Timesteps in its 13:37 form is also on this album.
For those fans of Prog rock: Viddy the film when Alex visits a record store: Notice the Vertigo swirl above the main desk, also in the wrecked foyer of Alex's highrise, one of the figures on the vandalised mural has "Suck it and see" written on it, also the name of a Vertigo music sampler of the same era.

The beginning of a new sound in metal! + Bonus Tracks.......2007-07-19
The musical influences in this album range from Iron Maiden (Number Of The Beast - Powerslave era) to Queen, Rainbow and Queensryche which are fused together in a magnificent way and are not in any way a copy of the certain influence.
This band and especially Kai Hansen had an extraordinary talent and imagination to write most of the songs in the album. By combining the influences mentioned above together with very fast drumming, high pitched vocals, melodic and technical riffs with fabulous twin-guitar solos, Helloween achieved to lay the foundations for Power/Speed metal, as it is known today.
The album begins with an operatic marching type intro which sets successfully the mood of the album. The intro leads nicely into the fast paced "I'm Alive", which carries an optimistic message and includes a memorable chorus, fast drumming, raving guitar solos and twin-guitar reefs. The heavy "A Little Time" comes next with another catchy chorus and sound effects, while the vocals range from emotional low tone ones to high pitched screams. Onwards comes the metal ballad "A Tale that wasn't Right" to slow things down a bit, whose strongest points are the truly emotional vocals and the wonderfully played guitar solo. "Twilight Of The Gods" continues in the same vain as 'I'm Alive' but contains more thought-out lyrics, better vocals and a chorus that you'll never forget. "Future World" follows, which is the most famous of the tracks, a heavy metal anthem, played in mid-tempo, comprising of one of the best twin-guitar solos of the album and vocals varying from low tempo to really high-pitched. Next comes the true masterpiece of the album "Halloween", an operatic-fast-progressive-emotional power metal hymn raving over 13 minutes (which never gets long nor tiresome). All of those songs are still considered classics and for sure are some of the best and most epic power metal songs ever written (together with Eagle Fly Free, pt II).
But except the captivating music, a new charismatic vocalist that no one had hared of before, "Michael Kiske", joins the band to take this album to the skies! Influenced by Bruce Dickinson, Klaus Meine and Jeoff Tate but equipped with much more emotion and range, especially in the high pitched vocal lines, 18 year old Kiske makes this album a MUST HAVE for any metal and hard rock fan. (M.Kiske is still considered one of the best vocalists in the heavy metal genre)
Even if you are not a metal fan, this album will please you or even blow you away with the mythical and uplifting atmosphere it creates and the technically perfect orchestration it achieves. (Definitely check out Keeper Of The Seven Keys pt II!!)
Bonus Tracks: Victim Of Fate and Starlight are songs taken from the first Helloween EP remixed with Michael Kiske on vocals - two trully amazing reditions.
Will be loved by Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensryche, Rainbow...fans.
Just listen...you'll be amazed!

Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt. 1.......2007-01-06
Classic Power Metal...Revisited.......2006-10-25
I don't think the impact of the Keeper albums can be overstated. In the 2 decades since they were originally released, their sound has been adopted, adapted, and flat out imitated by countless bands. Without Helloween, there would be no Blind Guardian, no Rhapsody, no Edguy, at least not as we now know them.
That said, why on earth has it taken 20 freaking years to get remastered versions of the Keeper albums? In an age where even the most recent bands keep reissuing their albums, we had to go way to long without a sonically improved Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I. Well, Sanctuary finally got around to the job earlier this year, and they certainly did it right. In addition to digitally remastered sound (which is quite good despite what a previous reviewer would have you believe), you get 4 bonus tracks. The remixed/alternate/edited versions of existing songs don't add much, but adding the b-side Victim of Fate was a nice touch. You also get expanded liner notes, photos, etc. plus a nifty slipcase for the disc.
This is what a remastered version of a classic album is supposed to look and sound like. If you're already a Helloween fan, it's time to replace your old version. If you're a power metal fan and for whatever reason haven't heard Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I, you need to order this album now. It truly belongs in every power metal fan's collection.
5 for the music and maybe 3 for the non remastering!.......2006-10-11
Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part I has it all. You get the riff heavy HELLOWEEN, you get the ballad A Tale That Wasn't Right and in between you get Future World. The centerpiece though is the tune Halloween. This fourteen minute epic was their Rime of the Ancient Mariner in many ways. Defiantly long and meandering, the tune Halloween was a career making all you can eat buffet of riffs. Yup this was ground breaking stuff for these guys.
The bonus material found on here is average at best. The updated booklet is fun with lyrics and other stuff relating to the band which is very cool. The bonus music is a b-side, a single edit and some truly bad edited/shortened versions of the original tunes. The record company in their infinite wisdom back then decided that these guys needed more air play and decided to shorten some of these tunes to achieve this goal? Apparently this was done to give the band more exposure to the masses. Well they must have cut/edited out half of the songs parts. One listen to these edited for radio classic's will have you weeping as they have managed to totally kill the overall vibe of these songs.
I also found that this remaster doesn't sound as good as I had hoped it would? For the most part it doesn't stand out as far as being a major improvement over the original? It's louder and the bass is certainly more present in the overall mix now, which certainly is a bonus overall, however it still sounds to compressed. I was hoping this new remastered version would finally open up the sound and let the true sonic beauty of this classic shine through. Well in the end it really doesn't do that which is unfortunate.
Is it worth picking up you ask? Absolutely!! The tunes still kick butt and that's really all you need to know.

A fabulous continuation of the first epic album + Bonus tracks.......2007-07-19
To be fair (without being influenced by the love and respect I have for this album) PartII wasn't as good as the first one, but nevertheless a record containing some of the best known power/speed metal songs ever written! The album continues with the same energy and structure of songs but with more ideas from guitarist Weikath and less of Kai Hansen and a slightly more commercial feel. All in all a wonderful conclusion to the first part.
"Eagle Fly Free" is considered the best power metal song ever written, comprising of dual guitar solos, perfect vocals,a bass and drum solo. "Dr. Stein" is a wonderful, melodic, funny(lyrics) and classic song. "March Of Time" is a technical, also melodic and strong power tune. "I Want Out" is a pop (catchy), heavy metal song that fulfills its purpose. "We Got The Right" is a strong power-ballad were Michael Kiske shines, delivering a breathtaking performance filled with melodic and high-pitched vocals. Finally the title track has some magnificent ideas but it sadly can't surpass the masterpiece "Halloween" of part I (the chorus is a little cheesy).
Musically the album is still characterized by fast double-bass drumming, twin-guitar melodic reefs and solos, outstanding vocals and fantasy lyrics-themes.
The production is slightly better than the first part, as the album sounds tighter and kind of clearer. The band sounds a bit tighter compared to their previous relish, but that maybe due to the better production.
Michael Kiske has surely glued in the band and his charismatic voice gives you the chills throughout the whole album (he sings higher than ever, hitting all possible notes with great precision)!
The only minor drawback in this album are the tracks "You Always Walk Alone" and "Rise and Fall" witch cannot by any means be considered bad songs, but just don't seem to fit here...And the other being that most of the song writing was done by Weikath, who is a exceptional songwriter and guitarist but not as good as Hansen.
This is a classic and groundbreaking record in the history shelves of metal, together with part I. A source of inspiration and influence to countless bands to follow.
This is also the last chapter in the Hansen - Helloween (80's) glorious era, from where onwards the band went downhill (in my opinion).
A MUST HAVE for any power/speed,heavy metal and open-minded hard rock fan.
Be sure to check out "Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I" and "I Want Out: Live".

Without Helloween, there would be no Blind Guardian, no Rhapsody, no Edguy, at least not as we now know them. Listen to songs like Eagle Fly Free, I Want Out, Save Us, and the epic title track, and you hear the foundations for the next two decades of power metal. Heck, just about every song on this album has been covered countless times by a whole host of artists.
That said, why on earth has it taken 20 freaking years to get remastered versions of the Keeper albums? Our sons and daughters from New Orleans.......2005-09-04
I came to this site, and appreciated what the reviewer Tyler from Denver said about the song, how it's an "indictment of indifference to the rifts in society that could one day blow it apart."
It appears that day has arrived.
Thankfully we have artists like the Neville Brothers to help us through.
I'm looking forward to hearing this entire CD.
Passes the test with flying colors.......2004-11-10
Musically diverse, socially aware, spiritually alive.......2000-04-10
The best example of socially aware funk is "Brother Jake," which laments the death of a character claimed by the streets. It rocks powerfully, with a gospel tinge, but there's nothing mindless about it. It's a strong portrait of a tough world that takes lives.
"Sons and Daughters" tiptoes toward rap. Charles Neville's powerful oration warns us not to forsake the young people, our lifeblood, whom he says are "being led to the slaughter." It's an indictment of indifference to the rifts in society that could one day blow it apart. At the end it strays from the spoken word, mixing in a spare, powerful guitar and Charles' voice rising toward song with the words, "You can't stop/running water/You can't hide/the fire that burns inside..."
There's also balladry that gives Aaron Neville a chance to display his unique sense of soul and his wonderful falsetto, in "Fearless." "Jah" delivers a reggae feel, and the title cut blends another testimony by Charles with the biblical admonition to "be my brother's keeper, though he be strong or weaker. I got to lend a helping hand."
For straight-ahead gospel, there's "Steer Me Right," which shows off the band's on-the-money harmonies and straight-from-the-gut emotion.
Listening to a Neville Brothers release is like dropping by on a warm Friday evening to hang out with a great group of friends who are never boring and who have a million ways to deliver a point. This is a neglected release, but it shouldn't be. Pick it up and enjoy a few grooves packed with a message.

Pure Delbert.......2002-07-09
Delbert's interpretations of "Spoonful," "B Movie," and "Two More Bottles of Wine" are timeless -- the 20-plus years since their original release makes no difference. This CD would be a good addition to the collection of any Delbert McClinton fan, and a terrific pick if you're only in the market for one of his albums.
