The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. Working was filmed for American Playhouse in 1982. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars An underrated musical.......2006-03-16

This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Lesser Known Gem.......2005-12-26

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Working!!!.......2004-06-12

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars a good, if obscure CD.......2003-09-26

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

5 out of 5 stars off the beaten path.......2003-07-10

I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.

As its title indicates, this 1985 recording marked Barbra Streisand's return to her Broadway roots (significantly, she had dropped her pop-period Guilty perm and returned to straight hair). The CD contains a broad selection of show tunes, from Guys and Dolls's "Adelaide's Lament" to Sweeney Todd's "Not While I'm Around." But let's face it: this may also be one of Babs's most dated albums, due to typically '80s synthesizer-heavy arrangements that simply don't work with the material. Company's "Being Alive" is scarred by a preening alto sax, while West Side Story's "Something's Coming" features what sounds suspiciously like syndrums. But--and it's a pretty big "but"--Streisand sounds more buttery than ever ("Send in the Clowns" may be one of her finest '80s moments), so much so that she often manages to overcome the cheesy production. Now that's a singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Learning About Love While Yearning.......2007-06-09

C. Kenneth Burkholder, who via an understanding was at the time of the original release of this was Barbra's prospectve father-in-law and whose death has occurred, said of this "If I Loved You", "That's nice." The tragicomic rendition of part of Adelaide fascinatingly points out some dangers of stripping for pay.
Just past the beginning of creating "What Times Are," a musical by (a) pacifist(s) as well as an adaptation of my play "What Time Is It, Neil Armstrong?," which is a sequel to my novel "How Did That Sun Get Out," I am inspired by the yearning apparent in "The Broadway Album"--a yearning not for perfection but for worthwhile ways for people all over the earth and in space to spend time.

4 out of 5 stars Great !.......2007-02-27

I bought the CD to replace my worn-out cassette tape, and I was pleased to find it has one more track -- Adelaide's Lament -- which I enjoyed. Nice to have another comic song to balance out the love songs. She brings out the beauty of these lovely tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Number one .......2007-02-05

Barbra is the number one female ballad singer of all time. No one has her range of feeling, the sheer lyric power of her voice, her sometimes exaggerated but often poignant power to dramatically express feeling. She can create the chill down the spine with a small trill or with a wild unexpected crescendo. 'Broadway' is her first home, and acting a song as she sings it comes natural to her.
This is one of her finest albums.

1 out of 5 stars she believes the hype.......2006-10-12

This is from the big-shot who thinks she can control a political party and tell fans what to think about issues despite being a high-school dropout. She's a good singer, but not the best. She basically needs to shut the eff up and sing. Hey, those are her words, right?

5 out of 5 stars Lovely voice, lovely songs.......2006-08-02

This album contains the choicest of Broadway hits given an outstanding interpretation by the Streisand. Barbra's flawless voice moves up and down with ease as the melodies unfold. Perfect!

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

1 out of 5 stars This guy is overrated!.......2006-03-28

This guy is terrible, The Neptunes ( the hottest Hip Hop/R'n'b producers ) are the ones that make his music (the fact songs such as 'Rock your body' were meant for Michael Jackson) - so for me it's easy to ignore his voice as it's their music. Apart from that, he's stealing michael jackson dance moves and his voice is unoriginal and not even that good either! Justin is for those who love soulless rubbish so for those who love real music, avoid it.

5 out of 5 stars Bow down before Justin and give him your praise!.......2006-02-23

Justin Timberlake is the originator of soul music, a towering genius to be feared with great awe. He sings, dances, writes, and produces, and he is the baddest dude in the music business. Respect this man and buy this album. Do it or risk scorn!

5 out of 5 stars Justin: the originator and innovator!.......2006-01-11

Justin Timberlake is the great pop talent of the 21st century! Forget those fake classic rock clowns; Justin is the real deal! I love this album. So will you.

        5 out of 5 stars Ok..........2005-01-08

I'm not gonna judge or condemn, either you like Justin or u don't like him at all. 'Cuz I don't care if ya'll believe him or not. He's has good talent and he's ready to work and put out 'nother album. Now Justin has got his skills in a groove-on knahmsayin. He can do it better than most people he work with in the past. I'm just a believer that he might be around 4 a very long time. Yep he sounds most like my idols I enjoy are Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Prince, Miles Davis, and others I suggest. I was only 17 when he put out his first album and only 18 when he released the new song "I'm Lovin' It". We all know that's being play 4 a McDonald's commerical which I love the most. But big up to my man Justin and hopes he keeps doing what he has to do. We need more from you Justin!!!

        1 out of 5 stars justin timberFAKE.......2004-02-09

pathetic i xpected more 4m this man.hes songs r only kewl cus of the neptunes hu produced it!!!

        waste of time

        5 out of 5 stars Ok..........2004-02-04

I first want to say that the guy who wrote the comment with a 1 star with all capitals is a demwit. I don't give a crap if you hate Justin T. If you hate him then why u reviewing this? Just to amuse yourself? Trying to make a name for yourself? Damn...how stupid can a average 21st Century human being be...anyway now for the single..."I'm Lovin It" is kind've reminds me of "Senorita" and I don't know why. But I like it...the clapping in the background is pretty cool and the lyrics are very original. So to all people who review this CD and give it a 1 star just because you amuse themselves by using prfanity or being a total idiot then I feel sorry for you...so lastly if you like the McDonald's commercials like a lot then buy this...

        5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2003-12-18

I love the 'I'm Lovin It' single! And the video was very well put together and unique. Desptie what others have to say (like the first person above) - Justin is a very talented artist in my opinion and every song on his album is superb! And the song 'Last Night' .. Good choice for the next single. Great song. I personally, would have picked a different one like 'Let's Take A Ride' or 'Nothin Else'
Keep up the GREAT work Justin!

        1 out of 5 stars DREADFUL.......2003-12-11

IT SEEMS JUSTIN HAS DECIDED TO RELEASE PROBABLY THE MOST UNINSPIRED SONG OFF HIS LAME ALBUM AS SINGLE #5 TO CASH IN ON ITS APPEARANCE IN THE NEW MCDONALDS COMMERCIALS. HIS FIRST 4 SINGLES WERE ALL PRETTY BAD, BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN ACTUALLY REMEMBER THEM UNLIKE THIS FORGETTABLE PIECE OF TRASH. ONCE AGAIN, JUSTIN HAS (UNSUCCESSFULLY) TRIED TO SOUND SOULFUL + TRIED TO MAKE THIS SINGLE SOUND HIP-HIP (OH, YEAH MAN; YOURE REAAAL GHETTO....FROM THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB); AND THE RESULT IS UTTER TRASH. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SONGS THAT IS SO BAD YOU BLOCK OUT OF YOUR MIND AFTER YOU'VE HEARD IT. ENOUGH SAID.
