5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars My kids really like this!.......2007-07-30

My kids, 6 1/2 and 3 years, really like this CD. They LOVE "Cantelope" and "Look at me now" songs. I gave it 4 stars because they totally love the Toddlers CD she has, which has to be 5 stars. I love that too! So sweet and doesn't make you crazy like some other CD's I have to play over and over...and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids of all ages.......2006-06-29

I have seen Sara perform twice now--the last time with her older daughter along with her. She is great with kids and her songs are catchy, easily learned and have wonderful messages in them. Look at me....a song that all parents should listen to and every kid should learn to sing. This album includes all of her older kid material..it will have you singing, clapping and wanting more. The final song on the album is beautiful and bittersweet and makes for a great lullaby. It's a wonderful collection. If you have the chance to see her perform...it's well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Third in an impressive series of audio CDs.......2004-03-10

Big Kid is third in an impressive series of audio CDs designed to inspire quality parent-child time through music and poetry. Award-winning singer and songwriter Sara Hickman reaches out with enthusiastic and movement-oriented songs to spark activity, confidence, and imagination in developing young minds. The individual tracks include Iolana, Cantaloupe!, Ooh La La, Middle Of A Little Country Road, Eat My Breakfast, Look At Me, Louise, Pledge, Little Seed, Radiation Man, Pink On The Inside, Here It Comes, My Sista My Friend, Nanatime!, Little Yella Dog, Belinsky, I Wish I Were A Princess, It's Fall, Space Poetry!, Pillowman!, Red Wagon, Rainstick, I Wish You Well, and Pray For Peace. Also very highly recommended are the two earlier CDs from Sarah Hickman: Newborn (featuring both traditional and original songs for newborns and their parents) and Toddler (a collection of songs, stories, and poetry that teaches counting, colors, animals, sounds, and geography suitable for preschoolers).

4 out of 5 stars A smooth start.......2006-02-05

Big D's Asian Man debut is a landmark in punk/ska history. This is a band that not only embodies the DIY Ska lifestyle but also the spirit of the music. Good times is the staple message of Ska and Big D know that better than any other new Ska band. All the songs are bubbly, upbeat and relentlessly energetic. The band took the genre to new heights with this album by making a sound that is stylistically no different than most other bands of the genre but still manages to sound completely new and fresh. If it wasn't for the unabided enthusiasm of Dave McWayne and the rest of the band, the music would have faltered and been unfairly lumped with other bandwagon Ska bands. You can tell how much the Kid's Table love what they do simply by their lifestyle: one of homelessness and nonstop touring.

The album starts of strong with Myself which is a high-tempo skank punker that contains brilliantly catchy lyrics and wonderfully fluent horn lines. This theme would continue to other tracks such as Dirt Lip, GLD and Can't be Caught. The band also harnesses the awesome power of the super-heavy bridge in the songs Fatman and album highlight 51 Gardener.

But the album is not perfect. In fact it is far from it. Later albums would prove to be much more focussed and improved. The band at the recording of this album had 5 horn players, which is a fairly ridiculous amount for a band that has so much punk influence. The abundance of horn players make the horns too big and somewhat tedious at times (while at other times it's phenomenal). The CD also drags on with very little true variety in the music. When there is variety, it's done haphazardly and comes off as pointless filler (especially the straight punk songs Apology and Learning to Listen). This flaw would be remedied severely in the follow-ups.

This CD is a great introduction to a band that really hasn't gained a lot of precidence yet. The good-time atmosphere radiates on every track and makes a very enjoyable listen. Not for those fans who hate it when distortion enters the Ska picture or for fans of underground music period. If you love Ska and want a skankin good time, however, this CD is truly for you!

4 and a Half Stars (just short of perfect)

P.S. Trad Ska fans tend to love this band, too!

3 out of 5 stars Shame no one knows this band........2004-11-12

Said to be the poorest ska band around (poor as in no money, not talent) Big D make pretty damn good cds. Some of the songs are a little questionable, but the good songs definitly make up for it. Big D isn't going to change the world or re-invent ska or anything, but these guys are damn good at what they do. This cd is a must for ska fans. If you like this, you should also look at getting The Gypsy Hill e.p. or their new cd, which Amazon doesn't have as of now.

5 out of 5 stars big d rules.......2004-02-19

big d is awesome, buy this cd if you like ska. some of their earlier stuff is good, like the fork in hand split with drexel or their ep "energy". go to a show, they kick ass, its definitly worth it.

This is an awsome band. Obviously if you have stumbled upon this CD you know ska, because not manny people know them. The lyrics are fast and addicting, and the music is great! These guys definitly got the tallent, and I advise you NOT to pay attencion to the loser who gave them only 1 star.I recomend this to anyone! for other ska, you can check out the mighty mighty bosstones, catch 22, or the aquabats.

5 out of 5 stars Big D Is Amazingly Good!!.......2003-11-03

5 out of 5 stars The beginning.......2003-06-11

I have several of Jonny Lang's CD's and enjoy them all but this one is an exciting begining to an even more exciting career. I got this CD when he appeared in my small town at the beginning of his career and saw him very recently too. Although he is more of a polished performer, this music is still blues at it's best...even if he would have been 30, 40 or 50, the soulful sound is there along with the fantastic guitar licks...I love it !!

5 out of 5 stars young gun.......2002-10-12

cd is from 1995 originally and the cd contains great electric blues ,the cd is mostly uptempo blues from the opening of louise to the great cover of albert collins "im tired" to my fav a great slow blues tune nice and warm with some of the best guitar licks i ever heard

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IT IS...................................2002-05-11

Chicago does not mean the blues, Memphis does not mean the blues
even Mississippi Delta does not mean the blues. The blues come from deep inside ones self and anyone, including a white teen guitar player from North Dakota, can play it. The man definitely has it in him and it is definitely comin' out.

5 out of 5 stars Most Chicagoan's Dig this Kid.......2001-12-04

OK. That last "Chicagoan" is not a good representation a true blues fan. I admit I don't have this CD, but I do have all of his others. Quite frankly this kid wails! I'm just hoping his voice holds up past puberty.

5 out of 5 stars A few of my words about Jonny Lang.......2001-11-28

Jonny Lang is awesome! His live shows (two of which I've seen) are unbelievebly wonderful. I've seen live BB King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Keb Mo, and many more just to name a few of the GREAT blues players, and Jonny is right up there with the rest of them. I am amazed at the fact that people are always saying "something" about his age. So what, he's young, but he's fantastic, his heart is in his music and he look like he really enjoys what he's doing (not commercially ruined). If you enjoy blues, buy all the Jonny Lang you can! And if you ever get a chance to see a live show, GO it's worth twice the price of the ticket.

There's a lot of schlock on Broadway these days, so it's especially frustrating when a small, off-Broadway show doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Carried by the indomitable George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes in the title roles, Pete 'n' Keely should have been a lot more successful than it was, so we're lucky to have this recording to immortalize the little show that should have been. Inspired by the likes of Steve (Lawrence) and Eydie (Gorme), Pete and Keely are two high-voltage entertainers; the show purports to document their hectic 1968 TV special. Dvorsky and Mayes are fantastic as they frenetically go from clever originals by Patrick S. Brady and Mark Waldrop to over-the-top Rat Packy takes on classic tunes such as "Fever" and "Besame Mucho." As for the finger-snapping rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," you've got to hear it to believe it. Our only qualm: the recording doesn't do justice to Bob Mackie's delirious costumes. Oh well, can't have it all. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I lent my copy of Pete 'n' Keely to a friend. When she returned my CD, she said that it was perfect. I agree. Many of the songs are an enjoyable trip down memory lane that brings back many fond memories. The new songs by Patrick Brady and Mark Waldropfit right in. Sally Mayes does the best rendition of "Black Coffee" that I have ever heard.Goerge Dvorsky's Fever" is also fantastic. It is not unusual for me to be sitting at my desk at work and have one of the songs run through my memory. That isd without any music in the background. My friends who have heard me play the CD have purchased a copy for themselves, they liked the CD so much.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat Musical Magic.......2001-12-11

This album is a MUST for any fan of Broadway - full of upbeat musical magic performed flawlessly by George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes.

The cd captures wonderfully the manic energy of Pete and Keely - a television couple that reigned supreme in the 1960s. Throughout the album we hear them at their best as they recall their joint musical career and their award winning signature tunes.

Dvorsky is a smooth as silk baritone with shades of Robert Goulet. His rendition of "Fever" on this album is alone worth the cost of the cd. Although done with a slight comic edge, the song comes alive with a wonderful nuance that Dvorsky delivers effortlessly. You'll find yourself replaying that track again and again.

The same could be said for Maye's sparkling "Black Coffee". Her voice is pure velvet, with a touch of "seen it all and done it all" flowing throughout this sensational track.

This original cast recording has been produced perfectly. The sound quality is superb, and the inner liner has some great photos of Pete n Keely in their glamorous Bob Mackie costumes that were such a huge part of the New York City premier.

If you like Broadway - then this cd is a must have...

If you like to smile when you listen to a cd - then this recording is a must have...

And....if you like your music upbeat and infectious - then this original cast recording is a MUST HAVE for your collection...

      Product Description

CAPTAIN LOUIE is a family musical with music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin). Adapted for the stage by Anthony Stein, from the book The Trip by Caldecott Award winner Ezra Jack Keats (who authored and illustrated 24 childrens classics, including the Caldecott Award winning The Snowy Day and the Caldecott Honor Book, Goggle), it's the story of a young boy on Halloween night who escapes into his own imagination as a means of coping with the loneliness he feels when he moves to a new neighborhood.

Being a Stepen Schwartz fan, we decided to see what his children's musicals are like. We were delighted.

5 out of 5 stars More pleasing Schwarz music, but this time aimed at kids.......2006-10-31

Great music, acting and singing. See the tour now, I saw
it right before Halloween in Oneida, WI! Excellent length

5 out of 5 stars CAPTAIN LOUIE, IN HIS BIG RED PLANE, SOARS........2005-09-04

THIS MUSICAL WILL APPEAL TO ALL WHO ARE CHILDREN AT HEART.STEPHEN SCHWARTZ HAS COMPOSED YET ANOTHER WINNER AND THE YOUNGSTERS WHO PERFORM,DO JUSTICE TO EACH OF THE FANTASTIC SONGS.THE ORCHESTRATIONS ARE ALSO GREAT.ALL THE TRACKS ARE SPECIAL AND THIS C.D. IS A MUST FOR PARENTS WHO WISH TO INTRODUCE THEIR CHILDREN TO MUSICAL THEATRE.

5 out of 5 stars Another stunning piece of work from Stephen Schwartz.......2005-07-15

How has the, in my opinion, often underrated Stephen Shwartz followed up his massive success of 'Wicked'? Another big budget Broadway blockbuster? Another high-profile movie? No. Instead he has given us a truly beguiling score for a small-scale family musical with a young cast.

The quality of his writing (and, indeed, the performances on this cast recording) is of just as high a quality as 'Wicked', 'Children of Eden' and the neglected gem that is 'The Baker's Wife' (check it out if only to hear the absolutely magical 'Meadowlark').

There are elements of his previous work in 'Captain Louie' (even going back to 'Godspell'), so it is guaranteed that if you like his writing in any way, you will get a huge buzz from this new show.

By the way, don't think that, because this is a cast of young people, the complexity of his writing is in any way compromised - these young people are challenged and more than rise to that challenge!

      Superb listening!

"Big Big Car offers some serious thoughts on what is cool in the world and who gets to say it is. Whether it's choosing teams at recess ... endorsing someone's choice in footwear, or hailing the next big thing in indie rock, there's a lot to think about." - INDIANAPOLIS STAR

Limestone Throne/Kid Fight details a day in the life of Michaela as he navigates his way through the trials and triumphs of middle school, that awkward time in the life of an American child when wearing the wrong pair of pants can haunt him for the rest of the school year. With this collection of loose and jangly upbeat sing-alongs, recorded and produced with help from Tyler Watkins (Margot & The Nuclear So & So's, Everything, Now!), Big Big Car has delivered another Central Indiana gem.
